Holy wow of epic list! And it's a fundraiser!

..I think the only brewery on that list I've seen for sale in Norway is Left Hand, and then only Haystack Wheat. Also I've drank (drunken?) Lost Abbey 10 commandments once. Oh my. Enjoy, bout to! Sounds awesome!

Oh man, Left Hand has so many awesome beers! I've never had the Haystack because I'm not a big wheat fan but everything else I've had from them has been awesome (I've got some Fade to Black in my fridge right now, a smoked baltic porter :D).

Yeah, the fact that it's a fundraiser makes me feel a little better about spending $25 I shouldn't be spending :lol

The stupid website won't let me buy advance tickets though  >:(

So at Thanksgiving my brother and I shared a Petrus Gouden Tripel ale.  Ringing in at 7.5 ABV's it was a smooth accompaniment to my shmorgishborg of side dishes.(I don't eat turkey.  WUT you say?)

Tonight I tried for the first time Victory V-12 Belgian-style specialty ale.  HOLY SHIT is this strong.  At 12 ABV's it packs a wallop in taste and alcohol.  I'm buzzed sharing a bottle with the wifey.  It reminds me of a beer at the Boston Beer Works called Hercules Strong Ale.  Drink at your own risk but enjoy it's bold flavor.  I love it.

Never tried that one... really strong beers are kind of hit or miss with me but I definitely don't like a beer that really tastes its alcohol content... like I had that He'brew 14th anniversary stuff at my friend's the other night and I think it's like 14%... no thanks.

Tonight I had the Strange coffee stout and did not like it as much as I remember liking it last time. They're awesome, though. Also had Boulevard's Sixth Glass quadrupel which was pretty good (and got better as it warmed up a bit) but tasted a bit strong compared to similar beers I've had.

My brother said the same thing at thanksgiving and he was a bit upset since he was going the day after to the Bruins game and then on to Sunset.  He said at dinner he couldn't taste a thing.

yeah, I had a little bit of an issue enjoying everything at Thanksgiving, and I had a few beers at a bar for lunch yesterday that I know I like (Bear Republic Ryevalry, Troegs Mad Elf) that just didn't seem right. I'm gonna hold off an any future libations until I'm feeling a bit better.

PLM, I would second king's mention of Victory, and add in Troegs and Weyerbacher as very solid breweries. Chimay is probably the most ubiquitous of the Belgians if you want to dip your toes into that pool. Another option to explore Belgian style brews is Ommegang. They're out of Cooperstown NY, but they should be relatively easy to find. Hennepin and Ommegang Abbey Ale would both make great intros to their styles (saison and dubbel respectively).

Fuckin' bronchitis. I had that back in September, with a hint of pneumonia. Not fun. Glad you're getting over it!

As for beer... I just had an Alaskan winter, which was okay. Last night I had stouts from Avery (I think it was called Out of Bounds?), Boulevard (I'm too lazy to look up the name right now but it was maybe the hoppiest stout I've ever had), and Dogfish (Chicory).

Tomorrow is the Parade of Darks, where I will hopefully get to try most of these-

Next weekend is the Wynkoop's Parade of Darks (https://wynkoop.com/happenings/206-parade-of-darks)

The almost-final beer list:

Avery Brewing - The Czar Imperial Stout, Old Jubilation
AC Golden - Colorado Native, Baltic Porter, Dunkel

Lost Abbey - Serpent's Stout

Strange Brewing - Pumpkin Porter, Vanilla Rum Porter, Paint It Black Honey Coffee Stout, Tainted Black Pale
Twisted Pine - Pearl Street Porter, Honey Brown, Imperial Porter

Still jealous of the Parade of Darks :( Think of me when you drink Serpent's Stout? :P

We made a Pilsner the other day, it's supposed to ferment at 10 degrees (50 F) which it was in the basement. Until suddenly it got much colder in the basement :flail: We had to open the window in our bedroom and sleep in 10 degrees for 4 nights until we found a refrigerator someone wanted to give away and then we put that in the basement with a heating source inside and put the beer there. This beer better get good! My toes was constantly cold for 4 days :P

Also beer related - Adresseavisa, the big paper in our part of Norway interviewed us about home brewing while we made an IPA the other day.

Me neither! Most pilsners are bland, watery stuff -yuck. So we thought "we can do better than that!" :lol Have any of you tried "the original" pilsner, Urquell? That's not bad at all, it actually tastes something!

I've never had Urquell, but I've had a few highly regarded American craft versions (Victory Prima Pils, Sam Adams Noble Pils, Brooklyn Pils, Trumer Pils) and they all have a similar very grassy hop characteristic to me, and it's just not my bag.

Pils usually tastes...nothing. Here in Norway, at least. It's the beer you get when you order "one beer", every kinda-big brewery has its own version... meh. But yeah, the pilsner Urquell is thoroughly hopped, and so will ours be as well. It'll be interesting.
I thought I'd link you to some tales of our brewing session but everything we write is in Norwegian and google translate just made a jumble out of it all :lol

Today I've bought one Trappistes Rochefort 8, and one Trappistes Rochefort 10. Because I never can remember which one I like best and now I'm gonna find out for certain.

I'm having a Blue Moon Winter Abbey.  It's not too bad.

Which leads me to a question.  I've had three different abbeys (this Blue moon seasonal, the New Belgium Abbey and the North Coast Brother Thelonius).  I know they're not the original Trappist ales, but similar.  Which of the three I tried are closest to the original?

The Trappist beers are different from monastery to monastery, the link is that they're all Trappist monks and brew in similar style and very "Belgian". That said, I haven't tasted any of those you mentioned. They're all American abbey-style beers, I guess?

FAKE EDIT:
Husband says Brother Thelonius tastes very little like a Belgian, more like a dark lager if he remembers correctly.
And so I assume that the New Belgium Abbey is the most similar to that trappist style, since Blue Moon is from Corrs (or Corrs micro brewery)?

THREAD BUMP

I'm too lazy  to recount drinking adventures of the last few weeks, but many awesome beers were consumed (Ithaca Brute, Deschutes Abyss to name two). A special shoutout to Pretty Things Our Finest Regards though, it's an English Barleywine that clocks in at 13.5%ABV yet manages to be so drinkable it should be illegal. Right now I'm sipping on a Terrapin Moo Hoo, their new Milk Stout that lives up to its name and is in fact just like drinking chocolate milk. Delicious grownup chocolate milk. On deck is a Terrapin Wake n Bake, their imperial coffee oatmeal stout.
