I'm not a big fan of blueberry stuff usually... but I may actually be in Maine next month to check out Shipyard and some others!

You'll get some of my beer when I make something that's good :P What I'm giving the guy is a bush league version of a hefe that seems to be popular with non beer drinkers :lol

Blah, hefes...

You keep saying that, you bastard. I'll bet you've made something halfway decent by now.

Jackie, when your in Maine you need to check out Allagash in Portland Maine.  Take the tour and try their beers.  For my money they're the best N.E. has to offer.

Yes, I was planning on it! If we do end up in ME we will probably be in Portland so there are a few around that sound interesting. Any other recommendations?

Are you looking for Maine only or all of N.E?

I'd say mostly Maine. We won't be there long so won't have time to travel around a lot.

Jackie.  Go to the interactive digital edition and there is a map to all of Maine for every beer stop you'll need.  It's at the right of the page.

hit up the local bar with my cousin tonight to work more on their beer program list. Ended up drinking the following

Stella Artois (just to get it over with)
Flying Fish Farmhouse Summer Ale (meh)
Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA (reliably tasty)
Allagash Four (Belgian style Quad, not on the list and a bit underwhelming compared to how I remember it being back when I lived in Boston)
Photobucket sucks.

Stella Artois is the one beer I will always present in any European who claims American beer is piss.

Yeah, Stella's pretty unfortunate as far as beer goes. I'm just bummed that I drank it the first night I started on this bar's "beer appreciation" list, only to lose my checklist and have to redrink it tonight.

The wife and I shared a few bottles last night.

First up was Mokah by Southern Tier Brewing Co.  It says it's great with a desert........IT IS A DESERT!!  Talk about a fantastic rich bold chocolate and coffee flavor and at 11.2ABV's it packed a wallop!!  We loved it.

https://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/49286

Next was Ommegang BPA (Belgian-style Pale Ale).  These guys and gals can't do no wrong.  Talk about the perfect summer evening drink.  The notes had citric and flowers just tempting my nose.  Nice head and a bit of hoppy without overbearing your senses.  At 6.2ABV's a fine Pale Ale for all to enjoy.

Finished off a six pack of Otter Tail Summer seasonal beer last night. Very good. I'm a big fan of summer beers, mostly because I'm not a fan of anything very bitter.

Had a Backcountry Saison last night. Didn't really stand out as far as saisons go but wasn't bad. Hit me surprisingly hard, though!
Also had a Pint's Pub Dark Star (from the cask, mmm), which I am a fan of.
Then went home and had a couple of these Wyoming pale ales I got at a liquor/firework store somewhere on the side of Rt. 80 last week, which were pretty yummy. I can't remember the damn name now and don't feel like getting up to look :D

So as I texted Jackie about yesterday, I went to my bar in the city for another Tuesday brewery event. This week was Mikkeller, out of Denmark. They just recently did a series called their Single Hop IPA series. They brewed the same beer (grains, yeast, fermentation schedule etc...) 19 times, and each time hopped it with a single different hop. This way you could really see what different hops are all about and compare and whatnot. This bar had 17 of the 19 on tap, and I managed to  get a 4oz taster of each one over the course of a few hours. 4oz isn't enough for me to review a beer on Beer Advocate, but I did take notes on each one for myself to refer to for when I'm building future homebrew recipes.

BUMP

I had a couple of *very* good IPAs from a small outfit in California this week, Alpine Brewery. I've had them before and loved them, but they can be a bit tricky to get a hold of (especially when you have to trade for them). I made a new drinking friend at an event at my bar in NYC a while back who was in visiting from Cali, and ended up leaving a book behind that night. The guy emailed me the next day saying he would mail me the book along with some brews after he got back home, and lo and behold I received a box with Alpine's Nelson and Duet (as well as my book) in the mail last Saturday. Duet is good, but Nelson is a top 5, if not top 3 IPA for me.

Also, I'll post a link when it's up and running, but I reserved a name on blogger.com for a beer blog that I hope to start soon. Should be fun, give me a place to review beers more informally than on Beer Advocate and discuss my various beerventures. Hopefully I'll get up and started with that proper in the near future :D

No beer for me tonight, but I had a borderline religious experience with my first bottle of Firestone Walker Parabola (barrel aged imperial stout) the other night. Got my camera in the mail today, so hopefully I'll have an introductory post up on my blog soon, and then I'll coincide posting about beers with whatever ends up being my 300th review on Beer Advocate :D

I've really been digging Karl Strauss brews since I got back to the states. Dunno if any of you east-coasters can get it though.

So last night I went to the Nobel Ale Works (https://www.noblealeworks.com/), who were showing the finals of the MLG Starcraft 2 tournament at their bar/tasting room area. Great time drinking with fellow nerds/drunks, and I tried quite a few beers.

Their Pale Ale was probably the best of their brews, it was pretty smooth with a nice bite to it. The Alpha Red was only okay, had some weird spices to it that I wasn't a huge fan of. On the guest tap they Victory Brewing Company's Golden Monkey, which was absolutely fantastic. I had no idea what it was when I got it, but it ended up being a brilliant Belgian ale, almost like a smoother, light version of Leffe Blonde (although it was 3% stronger at 9.5% ABV). I liked it so much I got another pint after the first, and then finished off the night with Noble's Sybian IPA, which was not bad, but I'd really need to try it again as I was a bit drunk following those two 10% pints :lol

All in all, definitely enjoying the American craft brew scene thus far.

Golden Monkey is indeed a good one. My local dive bar that friends like to hit up usually has a mediocre IPA and Golden Monkey on tap, which I usually partake of. There should be another blog post tonight (feel free to start leaving comments guys :P), but here's a picture of the beer store I'm frequenting while on vacation

So I'm taking a few days off after all the drinking debauchery of my week down in North Carolina, and I thought I'd see if anyone had ideas as far as other beer related stuff they'd like me to talk about on the blog. A couple ideas I had were

Overview of a style a style
Overview a brewery
Review of a bar I've been to

Also, don't be afraid to leave comments :P

mmmm, Golden Monkey. Made it through part two of "Bill's beer related activities" on the blog this week with a diatribe about  aging beer. Either tomorrow or Friday I'll finish with a primer on homebrewing (yesterday was trading beer). Then Saturday my self imposed dry spell is over, and it's back to regularly scheduled programming, including a pretty awesome beer adventure planned for Monday.
