Which DT Alumni Reunion Was More Important To You?
« on: May 01, 2010, 09:30:01 AM »
I was thinking about how LTE came in 08 and I was already going to Prog Nation 08 and I could afford two wild nights in NYC at that time so I missed it. It was a bummer, but for me missing Transatlantic was unthinkable and not an option.
How about you?: Which reunion was more important to you and the must see event?

This exactly.

If LTE had reunited with a new album as well...it would be a tie.

Yeah, Hef, I can see your point had there been a new LTE album. I'm not into Transatlantic whatsoever, so I'll go with LTE, but thruth be told, I really don't find either of them "important". I'm not saying that to a be a jerk...

When I saw the thread title I thought the choices was going to be Charlie, Derek, or KevMo.  :lol
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

This.

Although if LTE announced a new album I'd probably be more excited about that than the Whirlwind.

Well maybe you could call it DT Side project reunion.

And as I think about it, as long as MP is stimulated, it bodes well for DT. Also with LTE, you keep Jordan involved in real interesting instrumental music and I also think that helps as well.

If LTE reunited with a new album, they would win hands down.  I'm not that crazy about The Whirlwind, and while Transatlantic reuniting was pretty cool, neither reunion really had much of an impact on me.

Well, since we're speculating now... To take it a step further, if DT disbanded, which one would you prefer to go on?

I'd say TA hands down, both their early albums are in my top 20 ever I think, and the new one is still growing.

This was a tough one, actually. While LTE didn't release any new material, per se, they released a KICK-ASS live documentation of the short reunion tour - two whole live shows on CD and DVD (NYC and in the case of LA, also Blu-Ray), half of Chicago's show on CD, and a bonus disc with improvisations from the other shows.

Granted, TA came back together with an AWESOME new album, in three different release variations (standard single CD, 2-CD, and 2-CD/DVD sets), and have begun a (comparatively) lengthy tour of NA and EU. However, from this reunion/tour, MP's released his obligatory drumming DVD - Whirlwind Drumming - and Neal's buddies have put together the TA Official Bootleg DVD (which is FANTASTIC, by the way, and everyone should get a hold of one somehow)... so we're still getting more out of TA, and of course, there's the eventual live release (which I expect to be at least a 2-DVD adventure, and 3-CDs... perhaps a 5-disc set like DT's Chaos In Motion).

So after all that in consideration, TA won out. Now, if LTE came back and did another album this year before TA releases their new live album, you might want to post this poll again... LOL

Grrr, the LTE lead makes me a sad panda. It was a great tour and all, but Transatlantic is something different, the albums are frankly all stronger than either LTE album, and they put on just as good of a show.

yeah, I just don't get it, lte are fun albums full of jammy prog rock, TA is high quality progrssive rock, less jammy, more polished, I guess that doesn't appeal to people.

I agree with this.

Well, kinda. I like bits by Transatlantic. Mainly off Bridge Across Forever. Actually, most of Bridge Across Forever. The other two albums do nothing for me. They're just.. background noise. I don't connect to them or engage with them in any way. Alien to me.

But, that said, the LTE reunion didn't even play in my country as far as I'm aware, and if they did I didn't get tickets, so really - from a selfish, "important to me," answering the question sort of perspective, neither was important to me at all. However, I was really interested in what LTE were doing, following the setlists avidly, and was really gutted when that big ol' package was far too expensive for me to justify buying... so it's gotta be LTE.

I'm too poor and too distant a fan for either to have particularly influenced me in any way whatsoever, but I'm at least quite happy that LTE happened.

Kinda that.  But I'll put it another way.  Both bands in the past seemed sort of like "second-tier" bands in a way.  Not that the music was sub-par or anything like that.  But they are side-projects, which to me for some reason just ranks them in a different subcategory than the members' full band affiliations.  But to me, TA is now starting to take on a different status.  With three really solid albums under their belt, they feel like an actual band that has a lot more to offier by itself than just pieces of four other bands mashes together.  When these 4 guys come together to make music, the final product, to me, is easily on par with (and perhaps, at least in some cases, better than) what their full-time bands put out.  So TA has taken on a whole different status for me since the release of The Whirlwind.  And the latest tour only served to cement that feeling.

Anyhow, if it wasn't obvious, I'm voting TA in this poll.

For me, The Whirlwind is a progressive masterpiece. LTE is cool but there albums are really just rehashed 70's style fusion. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but I don't put LTE's music on the same level as Transatlantic. but that's just me. :tick2:

I beg to differ.  I hear a lot of similarities in the instrumental arrangements between DT and LTE.  That's one of the reasons why LTE hasn't had new material in the last 10 years because it would basically be DT without the vocals, to a certain degree of course.

BTW, I picked LTE.

Slightly, yes (in a good way).  He seemed to play a lot more piano with LTE, and their more experimental approach played to his strengths (compositionally, not in the sense of using iPods, etc. ;)).

As for DT and LTE, LTE definitely sounds like instrumental DT to a certain extent, but LTE was more daring and adventurous in regards to styles; for example, DT would never do a song like "Liquid Dreams."  And DT never does instrumentals that feature just one or two instruments, unlike LTE, who did stuff like "Hourglass," "State of Grace" and "...Excellent Adventure."

I voted for TA if only to help turn your mood around...

Seriously, though, if I were given the choice to pick one of these two bands to be a going concern, TA is the clear choice. LTE, while interesting, doesn't stand out as much as TA does. I can always go back to any of the TA discs at any point in time, whereas I have to be in the mood to listen to LTE.
