+1 for APC's When The Levee Breaks.

Also, Tool's No Quarter, but I think I already said that in this thread.

I think True Death of Life pointed this out many moons ago, but I've been spinning the Guillemots' cover of Sam Sparro's "Black & Gold" like there's no tomorrow. Fuck, do I ever love their cover of it. I should probably thank her.

Lately I've been enjoying Sonata Arctica's version of "Fade To Black."

I actually enjoy that one too. The ending is a nice change.

Also, a friend of mines band did a cover of Mr. Crowley for an Ozzy tribute CD and I think it's the best version I have heard. Faithful, yet awesome.

Prong covered Rush "Working Man"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLrxOBriZUs

Quote
Metal greats PRONG share their cover of the RUSH classic "Working Man," which appears as a shorter version on their latest album 'State of Emergency' available on Steamhammer/SPV.
Order Link: https://prong.lnk.to/StateOfEmergency
Get the song here: https://orcd.co/prong_workingman_regu...

Commenting on PRONG's version of "Working Man," main man Tommy Victor had this to say:
“RUSH had the big riffs and that’s something PRONG always wants as well. Especially in the song 'Working Man' with that all-time classic opening riff. PRONG being a power trio also connects us to this great Canadian band, and ironically we’re going out on tour with another great Canadian band, Vöivod!”

PRONG is currently out on a co-headline tour with VÖIVOD that began February 28th in Columbus, OH, and wraps up March 24th in Stroudsburg, PA.

A good cover usually requires a good original.

My vote, Johnny Cash, Hurt.

Interesting, because three that come to mind as my favorites were not great originals:

Big Big Train - Master of Times (originally an unfinished demo by Anthony Phillips)

The Clientele - Orpheus Beach (totally different from the original, which is kind of a nondescript indie song by a band I've never heard of, but the cover is beautiful)

Peter Gabriel - The Book of Love (a similarly awful original made amazing by Peter Gabriel).

Edit: Thanks for the Allegaeon and Prong ones.  Those rock!

Chris Cornell - One (U2 with Metallica's lyrics)
Big Head Todd and the Monsters - Tangerine. BHTM has a lot of great covers, but Tangerine's where it's at.
Living Colour - Memories Can't Wait
Jack White - Mother Nature's Son/That Would Be Something - Look up the video of this one.  Performed it with McCartney and Obama literally right in front of him. Balls.
Sheryl Crow - The First Cut is the Deepest
Local H - Hackensack, When Doves Cry (both versions)  Again so many good ones
The Bangles - Hazy Shade of Winter
Anthrax has so many.  Some of my faves are - Lookin' Down the Barrel of a Gun, No Time This Time, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Neon Knights.  Their Kiss and Cheap Trick ones are awesome but basically just amped up versions of the originals.
Gipsy Kings - Hotel California
Les Claypool's Duo de Twang - Stayin' Alive
Dynamite Hack - Boyz-n-the-hood
Bad Wolves - Zombie
Eddie Vedder - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Nirvana - Turnaround
Soundgarden - Girl U Want
Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - Mad World
Pearl Jam - Love Reign O'er Me
Soul Asylum - Sexual Healing
Willie Nelson - Blue Hawaii

Too many

That one is must-listening.  The original is my favorite Who tune, so there's that, but Ed really does it justice.

Also, and work with me here, the Tenacious D cover of the Beatles Abbey Road medley.

The Who - Summertime Blues
The Beach Boys - Sloop John B
Johnny Cash - Ain't No Grave; not for the song itself, but for its use as The Undertaker's Wrestlemania 27 walk-up music. It's like that version was written specifically to accompany that one man, making that entrance, on that one night.

I was re-watching Stranger Things the other night with my stepson, and it never ceases to amaze me how much better Peter Gabriel‘s version of Heroes by David Bowie is.

Don't get me wrong, David's is excellent, but almost every cover of that song I've heard is better:  Oasis, Fripp, Blondie, Crimson.......
