Best covers
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:55:32 PM »
A lot of bands cover music from other bands
My Question is what are the best covers?

My favorites:
DT - Cemetery Gates (Pantera)
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)
Judas Priest - Diamonds and Rust (Joan Baez)
Megadeth - No More Mr Nice Guy (Alice Cooper)
Metallica - Turn The Page (Bob Seger)
Motorhead - Louie Louie (Richard Berry)
Pantera - Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath)
Patti Smith - Gloria (Van Morrison)
Pearl Jam - Masters Of War (Bob Dylan)
Rush - Crossroads (Robert Johnson)

Tool - No Quarter anyone? Other than the annoying vocal filter he uses at the beginning, Plant's was nowhere near as obfuscating.

Oh forgot one of my favourite songs, let alone covers, ever!

Dixie Chicks - Landslide.

I want people to know I'm actually being serious whenever I mention the Dixie Chicks.

Vanden Plas, Gethsemane

Frank Zappa, Stairway To Heaven - because he changes the song in interesting ways without wrecking it. He played it with a reggae feel, and the entire horn section did Page's guitar solo note-for-note.

And just to contribute, I've always liked DTs cover of Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding.

A lot of great ones have been mentioned already, but I'm gonna throw out James LaBrie and Jake Lee's cover of "Red Barchetta."  Also nominating Opeth's "Soldier of Fortune" The Who's "Eyesight to the Blind," DT's "Tenement Funster" suite, and maybe some others when I think of them.

Alright, since there are so many mentions of 'Hallelujah', shall I at least mention a very honorable version of it?

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah

Infinitely better than all the versions posted here.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

I love Cynic. I love Arch Enemy. Surprisingly I wasn't all that impressed with Kalisia's cover of Cynic's How Could I featuring AE's Angela Gossow on growls. I hope I can get into it because I nearly shat my pants when I realized it existed on youtube the other day.

Strangely enough I saw this vid for Kalisia ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTx7vaO2RBg&feature=related ) in the related videos on the sidebar and dug it very much as my intro to them just a few minutes ago.

Definitely check it out wolfster.

That Cynic cover was quite okay IMO.  Very true to the original.  My only complaint is that the pace in the first half just seemed a bit of a drag.  It got better once the solos kicked in.  Angela surprised me, she did a great job.

Listening to that original from them.  Quite excellent.  Nice melodic guitars and that brass section brought a bit of a Faith No More influence.

The deluxe edition of this album also has a over of DT's Fortune in Lies.  I might have to check more of these guys out.
