It’s definitely better than their last offering. Inprefer Bullet Height though. It has a lot more of the PRR moments from The Dark Third sound.

That's interesting. Bullet Height to me has a lot more in common with Hammer and Anvil than it has with The Dark Third. Eupnea feels like they went back to their roots while still innovating.

Vinyl didn't arrive in the mail yet and I'm friggin angry (although of course there is no one to be angry on). But I have had this album for a month on my hard drive now but I decided to wait for the vinyl so I can make it through these last days too!

Quite a few pre-orderers in Germany received their orders from InsideOut already, since IO sends their stuff from Germany... but I ordered the Burningshed version (UK) because I wanted their limited edition  :loser:

I also ordered the re-issue of The Dark Third and listened to it for the first time yesterday. I love that it is essentially one long piece of music since every song flows into the next. Sometimes you don't even realise it's a new song.
After one and a half listens, it's impossible to say if I like it better than Eupnea. I love the vocal arrangements and I think they're actually even more imaginative and complex than the ones on Eupnea. This band is about melody and not about technical wankery but still all the arrangements and instrumentations are very tasty and performed well.
Side 4 of the vinyl re-issue also contains the original EP featured with the first InsideOut release from 2007 (except for one song). Once again, InsideOut doesn't disappoint with the vinyl issue. Sound is broad, transparent and there's no surface noise. Very happy with this purchase.

I actually own a 1st pressing of The Dark Third vinyl, which is 1 reason I passed on it.

Like The Perfect Element anniversary remix, I may want to try and pick it up eventually if it is available.

Eupnea's my album of the year (and the first album of theirs I listened to) but I surprisingly wasn't able to get into The Dark Third. To me there's just a huge gap in songwriting quality between the two.

I've also listened to Hammer And Anvil and while there's a bunch of filler in the middle, the sound is right up my alley and there's some real good songs, especially towards the end.

Huh, wonder if it's a one-off? A follow-up to Eupnea this soon would be a pleasant surprise.

I remember them saying after the positive experience and response to Eupnea, they were interested in doing more music together, so i'm not that surprised.

What I didn't realize was Chloe Alper is a member of the UK band James as well, who while I'll admit I don't know, have quite an extensive catalog that goes back to the 80's.

Greg Jong comments of the track: “When Jon first played me his initial version of New Kind of Evil, I was honestly astonished by the beautiful melding of the halftime shuffle beat with such a giant yet melodious guitar riff. Then the synth line and vocal melodies entered and elevated the emotion even further — it was a really cool moment, I hope people hearing it for the first time experience a similar feeling.”

Jon Courtney adds: “Very excited to get the first of our new material out there in 2022. This was the first track I worked on in 2020, the embryo formed in the midst of tidal waves of uncertainty. I wanted the rollercoaster of a track to mirror that uneasiness & surreal bewilderment.”

Of the new album ‘Above Cirrus’, Chloë Alper comments: "Since Pure Reason Revolution's reformation I feel that this band has embraced its identity and its place within the Progressive rock genre with a force, confidence and grandeur that radiates through the work. This new record fills me with as much pride as it does head-to-toe tingles. I am excited for the music loving community to hear it and excited for the prospect of it growing our reach."

On ‘Above Cirrus’, the band continues many of the musical through lines that fans have come to expect; maintaining a balance between somber reflection and intrepid exploration, leading listeners through a shapeshifting collection of seven tracks that evoke a range of emotions. On the songs ‘Our Prism’ and ‘New Kind of Evil’, the energy reaches magnificent heights of guitar-led catharsis, rivaling the best efforts of acts like Tool and Filter, while offerings in ‘Lucid’ and ‘Dead Butterfly’ meld the group’s keyboard-centric song-structures with vast, epic soundscapes. But, unlike its predecessor, ‘Above Cirrus’ is far from a narrative driven concept record. As Jon confides, each song, while fueled by his personal journeys and the condition of modern times, is truly its own device. Reflecting on the lyricism of the record, he adds:

“Often my writing occupies itself with relationships; how we can be so tender/loving with each other in one instance, days later or even in a few flashes we’re tearing each other apart. The sublime & the savage/vicious. The music reflects this light & shade dynamic shift too. Our world shrinks through lockdowns/restrictions & strain is intensified. However, the end message is one of optimism – affirmation we’ll get to the end of this surreal chapter & be stronger together. Through the turbulence, we’ll help each other through the darkness.”

he album will be released as Limited CD, Gatefold LP+CD & as Digital Download, featuring beautiful cover artwork by artist Jill Tegan Doherty, who previously created the cover for ‘Eupnea’. Pre-order now here: https://purereasonrevolution.lnk.to/AboveCirrus

Exciting news!

I put on Eupnea today in anticipation of this new release. I haven't listened to it for over a year and man it's still a very good album!

As usual, I didn't listen to the single, but I did pre-order three of the limited vinyl copies from InsideOut for me and my friends  :tup

I liked this one a lot better than the first. I have high hopes for this one. It is a shame that Chloe won't be touring with the band this year but I guess that's just how the business is right now.

Chloe has announced that she will not be able to tour with the band this time round due to scheduling conflicts. Shame.

First listen was pretty good. Definitely seems like they're ramping up on the Meshuggah-esque Drop C riffs on this one, which is interesting. :P

I don't really know why they chose New Kind Of Evil as the lead single for this one... it feels like the weakest song on the album to me.

I can kind of agree with that.

I'm still taking this album in, but I sort of agree with 1 of the comments on rateyourmusic

Their heaviest and least melodic record. It's okay, but it feels like the balance is off.

I think my favorites at this point are "Scream Sideways" and "Lucid."

No way is it the "least melodic". I always find it strange when people think of heaviness and melody as being on the same spectrum.

I'm loving the new album. It is a bit heavier, which gives it some real punch, but it's also incredibly musically rich and grand. Definitely the closest in style and sound to The Dark Third, but punchier and with some more of the industrial/electronic elements they've explored since then.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.

Interesting. I found Eupnea to be much closer to TDT than this one. One the first couple of listens I can't say that I enjoyed the album, but it may be that it takes some time to really settle with me.
