Already better than AVO.

Fight Fire followed by Black Mourning is probably my favourite 1-2 punch of PRR songs :hefdaddy

So what are people's thoughts? It's definitely awesome, but not as good as TDT + bonus songs.

It's a good record, but it's definitely my least favorite of their 3. The best songs on it are great, namely the last 3 tracks, especially Open Insurrection.

Reaaally? It feels so much more consistent than AVO.

these 4 tracks
Patriarch, Valour, Over the Top, Never Divide
all seem to blend together for me. They don't seem as inspired.

Also this new album doesn't feature Chloe's vocals too much.

AVO really did flow to me. And it only has gotten better with time.

This new record seems to echo that one more than I'd like. It's almost like some of the music on Hammer & Anvil came across as b-sides for AVO. Namely those 4 tracks I posted above. What made AVO fresh and progressive was how it wasn't The Dark Third Part 2. Whereas this new album almost comes across as AVO Part 2. Part of that could be how soon it came out.

On the other hand, songs like Blitzkrieg and Open Insurrection at least show the band are still trying to do new things. I just don't get the sense Hammer & Anvil has enough to compare to TDT nor AVO. But we'll see how well it ages and I suppose what they do next.

no way, as I played AVO again today. There's nothing on that album as bad or un-interesting as any of those really. I'd take Disconnect, Bloodless and all of The Gloaming over any of those songs.

And maybe most significant is how well AVO flows to me. The energy is consistent on that record. I recall putting that thing on a large number of times over the last year when I needed to wake up at work and it never failed me.

I have concluded that Hammer & Anvil would have made an awesome EP or Mini-album if those 4 Depeche Mode/Synth-Rock-based tunes were not included. Because those 3 closing tracks are totally ace. And the other tunes, Fight Fire, Black Mourning and Last Man, Last Round are among the better songs the band has written. But the Synth-Rock stuff sounds totally generic to me. Not prog, not epic, not layered, and not even memorable.

New album is pretty good, heard it 2 times in full this far, and played some of the songs more times.
Black Mourning is my favorite, and the songs following making the middle-part of the cd is probably the best.
I also really like Armistice, great closer.
Fight Fire is way too repetitive and annoying, but it will probably grow on me as most songs do.

Overall i'd rank it next to The Dark Third, though AVO is still their best album. IMO.

I thought that most of the tracks on AVO were pretty awesome, but to me the album didn't measure up to all the attention it received (mostly from prog fans, interestingly). If I enjoyed AVO, is this worth my money, or is it just some over-hyped-by-progarchives clap-trap?

It's worth checking out, though overall it isn't as good as AVO. imo :P

I think the reason that AVO got a lot of chins wagging is because it was very hotly anticipated, following a very well-received debut album. That made the fact that it didn't suck even sweeter, giving PRR a two-for-two record, and two massively constrasting albums in the process.

I've not seen Hammer & Anvil hyped as much - although that may be 'cause I'm less ensconsed in the internet, nowadays, than I used to be - so I think reviews will be fairer. Myself, I'm not sure how it measures up to AVO, which I was very, very fond of, but it's a much heavier album all round. More riffy, more electronic, more guitarry. Everything amped up to 11. Think it's definitely worth a shot if you had any love for Amor Vincit Omnia whatsoever. It progresses the sound without being "more of the same."

Basically, imagine Amor Vincit Omnia, if it had its romantic heart stripped from between its ribs, and replaced with fury.

So The Dark Third just clicked for me, wow.  :hefdaddy
Dunno why i've dismissed it earlier, but this is their best album IMO, though i still dig AVO and the latest.

Sometimes i don't listen to an album until very late because of really silly reasons, in this case it was because in my library it was divided into "disc 1" and "disc 2", which meant that i had to switch to the playlist for disc 2 after the first was done.
All this was fixed really easy just by changing the name on the album to just "The Dark Third", something i've been too lazy to do earlier.  :lol

Anyhow, Goshen's Remains and Apprentice of the Universe...  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Yeah, that's what the cd number / total cds tags are for :P

But you forgot the best track on the record - The Twyncyn/Trembling Willows

Bright Ambassadors is too long, despite being one of the best songs on the album.

Apparently it's their highest charting single, but it's 12 minutes long

The latest 2 albums actually comes out as boring compared to TDT, but still a quality-band.  :P

AVO has some great songs, some that surpass even the Dark Third when I feel like something fun.  The Dark Third is still a masterpiece, though I'm not always in the mood for it.  The one time where iTunes' "stuff you might like" feature in their store ever came in handy for me.

Overall i think AVO has only great tracks, but it doesn't have the same epic "album"-feeling as The Dark Third have.
It's the same with Hammer and Anvil tbh, a lot of great tracks but the progressive-elements are nearly gone.  :sadpanda:

Bright Ambassadors could use about 2-3 minutes of editing and it'd be perfect.

When i got it about 3 weeks ago i listened to it like 6-7 times in 2 days, but since then i haven't really played it that much.
Will most likely give it another spin near new years eve before i make my "topX in 2010"-list.

Listening to Hammer and Anvil now, just finished up Valour.  Its a lot heavier than AVO, which I wasn't really expecting, while still keeping that electronic sound which I like.  Not many songs that are REALLY sticking out to me right now like Deus Ex Machine, Les Mahleurs, Victorious Cupid, Apogee, AVO, Disconnect, or The Gloaming.  Closest so far would be Patriarch, I think.

These are my thoughts exactly. It's a good album, but not really that much of a standout. It makes great background music though. I think it's their weakest release yet, but still pretty good, and worth the 10 dollars I paid for it.
