Another important thing: have your own pen.
As I tend to loose pens, I always bring two or more.  :lol

Yeah, I put like 4 of them in my bag and am already down to 2. :lol

Quick question, I have a feeling it will be, but is being a premium member worth it? Why or why not?

Yes, it is worth it! I'll just link to this - you can see the differences there: https://www.geocaching.com/Membership/default.aspx
There are many caches for premium members only, and these are often the very good ones.

For all you interested in Geocaching, you may also enjoy Letterboxing. I actually got into this before I discovered geocaching, and have had some really good times searching for letterboxes. They have them all over the US, but not quite as common as geocaches. I have found several in upstate NY, NC, MS, and in between. The difficulty varies quite a bit, but I've only ever not been able to find a couple.

Rather than trying to explain the whole concept, I will just direct you to the site here: https://www.letterboxing.org/index.php

Decided I'm going to give this a shot tomorrow. I forgot that my Mom has a fairly nice Garmin GPS that she never uses, and it turns out there's a cache hidden on a trail right by my house. I'll take a nice little walk tomorrow and maybe even take my sister along.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Went on a quick look today for 2 and came up empty. One just stumped me and the other it was just too dark and in the middle of the woods, so just not good conditions.

Great caching day today: a very nice hike of around 12 miles and 21 caches.  :tup
And 2 new containers arrived today (lock & lock boxes), so I will hide my prog cache tomorrow morning.

Nice. I have a bunch of things to do over the weekend, but during my travels I hope to get 3-5 new caches.

Got a day off tomorrow and I have a major Geo adventure lined up. There is a local bike trail which is partially looped, and that section comes in at 5.5 miles. In that loop are about 15 caches, and some of them give answers towards a main puzzle cache. Sadly it looks like the main cache got muggled, but I plan on getting all the info so I can go back whenever it's reset.

And a Dick's Sporting Goods is on the way, and I plan to grab a compass for a couple of caches that require bearings, since my phone, which seems to have a very good GPS for coordinates, has a horrible compass.

So by 4pm tomorrow my goal is to at least double my found caches and get in a good hike.

Cool - have fun!  :hat
We are planning on doing a highly recommend night cache this weekend. There's also a video for the parking coordinates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9zi7-vJRpQ&feature=youtu.be
The cache is premium member only, so only those can see the listing: https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC3K1B3

If this fucking weather improves a little today, I plan on going hiking with a few friends. In turn, I noticed there a couple caches near the trail, so hopefully we find a couple today.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Well, gf's interview ran late this morning, so we had to cut the hike a bit short, but we still managed 10 finds with only 2 misses, bringing my total to 19.

I have to imagine if you've found enough that you'd know pretty well what to do, but I've never done it so I'm just guessing.

There's an unwritten rule that you should find 100 caches first before hiding your first one.
It's indeed very important to get a feeling for what's possible, what good containers are (film canisters are not waterproof, for example), what a cache should include etc. Soon you'll find that the fast and easy finds get boring after a while. Better do a nice multi-cache or an interesting unknown cache than a powertrail with 50 caches on a 10 mile hike.
Make sure you can maintain it easily.

Last night my friend and I got super drunk, and geocaching came up and I ended up telling him about a cache only a block away from me that in 3 attempts I couldn't find (heavy muggle traffic). He decided we'd check it out, and wouldn't you know, in the dark and drunk I finally found it. We then proceeded on a 4 mile drunken stroll around Allentown getting a total of 6 caches (no misses) until his wife ended up picking us up and bringing us back home. Good fucking times. :lol

Well, depends on how you want the listing to look like. There's an online form that you have to fill out (name of the cache, coordinates, difficulty ratings, attributes, short and longer description, maybe a hint or a spoiler photo). You can use HTML or add a background pic.
If it's a simple listing, it will take about 10 minutes.
Then you submit the listing to a reviewer and when there are no problems, he will publish it as soon as he finds the time (which can take from 5 minutes to several days).

Nick: nice!!  :lol

We did a great 4.5 hour night cache yesterday. Thematically, it's about an evil cult. In the containers, we got a bloody hand, a bloody foot, a Ouija board, a tape recording, a switch that turned on a large cross on a tree and more interesting stuff. We started at around 10 pm and 2 hours later, we came across 4 people coals, speaking no word, just passing us by. A few minutes after that, 3 others blocked the trail, again saying nothing. We had to pass them. They did nothing, but slowly followed us to the tree where we had to solve a riddle. After a while, they unmasked. Man, what a great addition to an already great cache! Some people are investing a lot of time, money and energy in making a cache special.

That reminds me, again, that I need to go re-find the cache I placed last year and fix it's location so that it can be published.

Not only for cachers: anyone have an idea how to turn this recording into coordinates? https://k005.kiwi6.com/hotlink/uh07xbx714/batman.mp3
Coordinates have to be something like that: N 51° 16.046 E 008° 51.818 . My guess is that only the parts in italic will change.

Edit: it works with Audacity. Cool idea!!  :tup

Yesterday, a cache was posted at 3:45, 5 minutes from my work. I get out at 4:15...

Some fucker found it at 4:10, 10 minutes before I would have gotten there. Pissed me off!

Yeah, usually, there are always FTF hunters out there. I'm actually quite surprised that my newest hide wasn't found today - it was published yesterday in the late afternoon. But as I said before, I live on the country.
Oh, the listing for it:  https://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=adfa422f-2681-4398-b518-0b5b2cf501aa One has to find out from what song the words are (it's an old hymn from the region I live in). Then, you gotta know where the letters from the song title stand in the alphabet (e.g. A=1, Z=26). You need some of the letters for the final coordinates).

Any clues on where to start with this? One I think is RHCP's greatest hits, so I'm guessing it's not number in the title based. Perhaps how high the albums charted?

Okay, just before bedtime, just throwing out some suggestions (not enough time to investigate them further right now).
There are 15 pics in the listing. A coordinate has 15 numbers. So each pic might lead to one number.
N 40° 34.900 W 075° 31.100 are the original coordinates, so for the North coordinates, it will be 40° 34.XXX or 35.XXX and for the West one, it will be 075° 31.YYY or 30.YYY.
Number of people in the pic (guess not)? Column by column or row by row? Website source code (as I just had yesterday)?

We'll find out, Nick.  :)

Okay, here are some hints:
As I assumed before, you have to find 15 numbers.
Find out the album names (Google image search ftw) and check the titles on the album.
There should be 1 title having to do with California. What's the number of the title?
There's not always a title having to do with California. But there's a number for this, too.

 :)

Actually, the D level is too high, I think. Maybe you are not used to some good mystery caches over there.  :hat

I haven't actually been able to look over it the last few days, but I'll go by your hints and attempt it this week. When I was away for a concert I got my first out of state cache and my first travel bug, and will hopefully be getting on a 5 mile/20 cache adventure sometime in the next two weeks.
