I like all the versions since they pretty much stay close to the original.....The original Talas one will always have a dear spot in my heart...but the DLR/Mr Big and even solo Vai ( with Billy as part of the Brood)

The mere mention of the band Stryper can either have people laughing on the floor or remembering a better time in music.  I went back and checked out a few tunes I remembered and was pleasantly surprised.  I'd forgotten what good songs they were.  Here is one of them, "Calling On You".  They might have been "God Rock", but some of the lyrics were vague enough that they could be interepreted as being about everyday life, relationships, etc, and this song is no different.  Great, simple guitar parts, big drums, and awesome harmonies.  Enjoy!

Today's pick is Yngwie Malmsteen's "Heaven Tonight".  Yngwie Malmsteen has an ego the size of Sweden, but nobody can deny that the dude f*ckin owns.  This is probably the single most pop-oriented song he ever put out.  I think it's damn good.  Great harmonies, off the charts guitar solo, and a chorus that sticks in your head.  Bonus for the fact that it's Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.  One of my all time favorite singers.  Enjoy!

This is indeed a great song from one of Yngwie's better albums. I really love JLT's voice here. Too bad he only lasted thru one album.

My other favorite with JLT is "Hold On".  JLT's voice is stratospheric on that one.  Also, YJM's tone on the "Hold On" solo is one of the awesomest and scariest guitar tones I've ever heard.  It's very abrasive and has this ungodly reverb.  Wicked.

That whole album is underrated.  Dreaming, Riot In the Dungeons, Deja Vu and Crystal Ball... really inspired stuff.  The sweet melodic quality of Turner's vocals really plays off beautifully against YJM's brand of riffage.  The combination makes the music come across even heavier than Yngwie's other albums.

In 1986 on The Sport of Kings tour.  Great show but I laughed at what my friend said about Yngvie.
Yngvie does a guitar solo,........ add keyboards, bass and drums to the same solo and it's an instrumental.  Add vocals over the same solo with the other instruments and you've got a song!

Agreed.  I know the Dio-Sabbath albums get loads of attention, but that whole Gillan-Sabbath album Born Again is pretty dang good too.   I remember watching the video for Zero The Hero way back when and thinking how f&cking creepy and doomy-heavy that song was.   Iommi's riff and solo was unlike anything he'd done before.

I was once in a band called "Chucklehead".  The greatest musicians I'd EVER been in a band with.  Our singer suggested a song from Kim Mitchell, called "Go For Soda".  We were like "WTF song is that?  Sounds like a pretty (insert unsavory/offensive/derogatory adjective here) name for a song."  Then he played it for us.

We were like "Damn, that's a kick ass song."

I would post the link to the original video, but you would spend too much time being like "This is ridiculously (insert unsavory/offensive/derogatory adjective here)" and wouldn't be paying attention to the song.  So here it is with just a title screen.  Enjoy.

A two-fer from Rainbow this week, each featuring one of my faves on vocals:

First up is "Stone Cold" with Joe Lynn Turner on vocals.  This dude has such a sweet voice.  So mellow, but he can totally own.  See the Malmsteen "Heaven Tonight" clip I posted previously.  Should come as no surprise, since the band was half Deep Purple, but this song kinda has Deep Purple written all over it.  The big huge organ chords in the pre-chorus and the big vocals sounds VERY DP-ish.

Next up is a live version of "Since You Been Gone".  Technically, no, it's not a Rainbow song, and the clip I've selected isn't even Rainbow, it's Alcatrazz, featuring Graham Bonnet and a very young Steve Vai.  Rainbow, however, had the most popular cover of this song of all the different bands who've covered it and Grahm Bonnet used to be in Rainbow, so it's close enough.  I am figuring the audio probably came direct from the soundboard mix, as when he holds the mic to the audience, you hear nothing but the background singers.  Enjoy!

It is a pretty killer riff.  I used to do this in an old band and it seemed to go well.  We used to love to play this as part of a trio of tunes - Lay It Down, Lick it Up (Kiss), and Slide it In (Whitesnake).   

Also, the double bass in this song is very cool.  Kinda intermittent, not like a constant double bass.  One of the primary things about this song that gives it a real "feel".
