I just listened to Sleepmakeswaves, "In Today Already Walks Tomorrow" to be more precise. This is some really good stuff.
Do they have any other good albums?

I'm assuming you've already listened to their full length, "...and so we destroyed everything"?  That's really the only two essential releases they have at the moment.

Also, from facebook:

Mono (Japan)
We've loaded up the gear to go record our new record! We will post some photos and videos over the next few weeks for you to see.

:D :D :D :D

I saw that Mono news! Great great great!

I still don't get the "post" part about post rock or any other "post" genre. Post, meaning "after", what makes the music "after" regular rock? Also, is all post-rock instrumental? If so, why not just call it instrumental rock?

Does it really matter? It's a genre with a pretty specific style, who cares what you call it?

And no it isn't, but either way stuff like Steve Vai or Joe Satriani would be called instrumental rock, which is nothing like post rock.

Most genre's have silly names.

Also, 'Atmospheric Rock' would be better than instrumental rock.  Not all Post Rock is instrumental.

You asked why it was called post rock, not what post rock is.

But anyways, it's heavily instrumental music characterized by standard rock instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar), sometimes supplemented by orchestral instruments or electronics. The song structure, rather than being the standard rock verse-chorus-bridge structure, is more focused on building timbre and texture over repeated musical motifs and extended song lengths. Vocals aren't common, and even in songs that have singing it is not the focus of the music, instead supplementing it.

Yeah, Post-Rock is very different from your average Instrumental Rock. Sigz explained it pretty well.

Well I figure the why and what go hand in hand. Thanks for the info.

Pretty cool that The Mighty Rio Grande (This Willl Destroy You) was the soundtrack for the best movie at the Academy Awards :metal
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

A Song for Starlit Beaches - Yndi Halda
Illuminate My Heart, My Darling - Yndi Halda
Ara Batur - Sigur Ros
Sleep - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
The Dead Flag Blues - Godspeed You! Black Emperor
a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun - Sleepmakeswaves
Follow the Map - Mono
This is Water - [The] Slowest Runner [In All the World]
Red Forest - If These Trees Could Talk

I don't know much Post-Rock, but that Dredg song in your list does stick out like a sore thumb...
But 55:12 is one of the best albums to just dream to for an hour... However, I can only listen to it when I'm already in a calm mood.

Haha yeah, the Dredg song is a bit of an odd one out... Its fairly post-rock-ish, and its also one of my favourite little instrumentals, so why not? :P

Has anyone else checked out Pray For Sound?  I LOVE the free single they put up.  They remind me of Explosions in the Sky, mixed with darker stuff similar to Steven Wilson's solo albums.  Their stuff is mixed/mastered by Magnus Lindberg of Cult of Luna!

Has anyone here actually listened to them?
