The Anime Thread V. Bebop
« on: April 27, 2009, 04:41:50 PM »
I've been watching a ton of anime lately. Watched all of Last Exile, finally saw the Cowboy Bebop movie, and now I'm halfway through Ghost in the Shell SAC (1st season). After that, I think I'm gonna watch Elfen Lied.

Anyways, discuss all things anime here.

Watch the second season of GITS. It's just as good as the first season. Also I just finished Elfen Lied a few weeks ago. Loved it.
Right now I'm in the middle of watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time. Liking it a lot so far.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Yeah, I'm gonna watch Second Gig at some point too. Right now I have to watch Elfen Lied, Blue Submarine 6, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, Le Chevalier D'Eon, and Full Metal Alchemist.

I'd also recommend you check out the Cowboy Bebop movie - its was really good.

Yeah, I was planning on watching it once I'm done with the series.
Oh and for christs sake make Blue Sub No. 6 a top priority. It's beyond fucking wonderful.

Just picked up a 7-episode series called Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still.   Looking forward to checking it out.

One anime I highly recommend is Last Exile. It has a fantastic Victorian/sci-fi/steampunk style to it which is incredible, along with a great story and some really excellent characters. I believe they're releasing the box set for about 35$ next month, and of course I'm sure you can find it somewhere on the interwebz.

I'll have to check that show out, I've been wanting to watch a new anime.

Sigz, you should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven't already.

Sounds interesting. What's the central idea of the plot? I'll look for it on my nearest anime rental store.

Sounds interesting. What's the central idea of the plot? I'll look for it on my nearest anime rental store.

It follows these two teenagers, Klaus and Lavi, who are vanship pilot and navigator, respectively (meaning they fly in the same ship, one pilots, and one helps keep it up; vanships are kinda like planes, except they use a different propulsion system). Their fathers were also pilots who were killed on a mission, leaving them orphaned, and so they taught themselves to fly their father's vanship, and make a living flying as couriers and competing in vanship races.

At the same time, there is a war going on between their nation and another nation on the continent. Due to the very chivalric/honor-based society they live in. the war is actually overseen by this group called "The Guild" which has vastly superior technology. Klaus and Lavi run into a pilot who was attacked by the guild in the process of running a very important mission, and he has them take on the mission, which then gets them involved in the war.

The plot really goes from focusing on Klaus and Lavi specifically to being more grand in scope, but it shifts in such a way that it never seems wrong; it just makes sense.

So, I just rewatched FLCL and it still makes absolutely no sense to me.

Also, I've started Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Bebop.

I'll post this here instead.

I've watched FLCL maybe 5 times total and most of it still doesn't make sense  :lol. But it does seem to make a bit more sense each time.

You won't be disappointed with those 2 you're watching now.

Yeah, Cowboy Bebop is great - as I said earlier in the thread, I highly recommend watching the movie as well.

I've always been huge into anime and manga, ever since the Dragonball Z craze hit America in the 90's. Anyway, if you like Cowboy Bebop, you are absolutely required to check out Samurai Champloo, Watanabe's spiritual successor to Bebop, and more of a, obviously, samurai centered anime as opposed to the high tech atmosphere created in Bebop. Some of my other favorite anime include Full Metal Alchemist, Death Note, Gantz, Naruto, Bleach, Persona: Trinity Soul, among many others.

If you read manga then I highly suggest checking out these:
Homonculus (psychological thriller)
Vagabond (biopic of the legendary Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai/martial arts manga)
Sand Land (Toriyama Akira's work, more child-centered, but fun and full of comedy and heart)
D. Gray Man (classic shonen action)

I've got tons upon tons of more series if anyone is interested, I'm always up for spreading the otaku love.  :loser:

About Elfen Lied...

I have no way to watch it without buying it blindly... it sounds like it's worth it... is it?

So has anyone seen that they're putting up episodes of the new FMA series (subbed) on Hulu?  Seems like its looking more to the manga than the first series did, and its still the same level of awesome.

Indeed, it looks interesting. At first I thought it was simply a re-release of the already finished series. Hopefully this "Brotherhood" version of the show does in fact extend far beyond that of the original anime. Odd though, it seems like they are quite literally simply releasing a "re-do" of the show in a sense that it is all essentially the same, just more of it. Here is hoping that they change up things here and there to fit the manga's original intentions better.

I just watched Akira, some days ago. I felt that the story had way too many elements for just one movie. The animation was great, though.

Metropolis is still my favourite Anime, and New Angel..., but that's a different story.

Metropolis is still my favourite Anime, and New Angel..., but that's a different story.

Metropolis was a bit difficult for me to get into and understand, let alone comprehend the different angles of the storyline and the character's intentions. After a dozen or so viewings I still get tied up every now and then and have to watch a few scenes over, but it is an amazing movie, no doubt about that.

Akira along with Paranoia Agent (though this show takes it to a whole new level of weirdness) seem to be the two most popular anime in the movie and TV show category, respectively, that get these kinds of reactions. PA isn't all too crazy once you learn the backdrop of the story and such, but it takes a little more effort from the viewers than most would like. Akira on the other hand is just straight up bad ass.  :tup

I recommend reading the Akira manga as well, there really is just so much that doesn't get to the movie, it's almost entirely different.
