Cry For Freedom
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:44:14 PM »
I've really been listening to "Cry For Freedom" alot and I'm wondering why it never made it to an album. Was it supposed to go on WDADU? I sure hope they'd play this again.

It's a Majesty-era song.  The lyrics were written by Chris Collins, and it was performed 3 times live when Collins was with the band.

It's on the Majesty Demos CD from Ytsejam Records.  I believe it is also on the Images & Words Demos CD.

I've never thought it was very good.

It would be nice to see JM at the forefront of a song like that again. It's always nice to hear DT's Rush influence.

There are two versions that I've heard. One is one the Majesty demos, and the other is on the WDADU demos. Personally I like the first version.

I have the instrumental version and I really dig it! I love the part with the keyboard riff that gets harmonized with the bass shortly after.

There's a version with lyrics?  Far out.

I believe snipit of the song also makes it into the Score DVD documentary.  It is the first lyric penned by Collins (an early version of Afterlife being the second/final lyric by him).

I would try to transcribe some of what he is saying, but damn if I could make out what he is saying.  Stuff about revolution.

An intersting sidenote, the pre-ytse jam Majesty demo came with a lyric sheet for all of their first songs.  Cry For Freedom was completed after they recorded the original dmo, and thus the lyrics were not printed.

Is it really Two Far? If so, I really hope they decide to bring this old gem out again. It is a really good song, with cool keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, and vocals. I think JLB could do it. Also, I don't mind Chris' vocals on this.

If its not then i'd like to hear it sometime soon.

Two Far is a separate song.  And I doubt they ever play either one live again.

The tune doesn't do much for me. Reminds me of Raw Dog a bit, in that it's a rather random concatenation of ideas.

Yes, but only in instrumental form - and this was also recorded pre-Kevin Mooore, so it was one of the very rare sessions done as a three-piece. According to Portnoy's liner notes this was the second ever song written by Majesty, after Another Won.

Nope, it isn't. The song doesn't appear with lyrics anywhere officially, you have to go bootleg for that.

The WDADU Demos Version is better I think. I think it's an outstanding song in that arrangement. I listen to it often.

A side note, I made a thread on MP's message board about the lyrics. To see if he had a copy of the original lyrics. I can make out a few of them from the bootlegs I have, but not all of them because of dat falsetto.

Also...this old FAQ at  https://gabbo.net/dt/faq/ states:

6.1.6 Did the demos "Death of Spock" and "Cry For Freedom" ever go anywhere?

Yes. They became "The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun" and part of several instrumental improvisations. (listen to "Bombay Vindaloo," "Moon Bubbles," and "Barfbag"... it's in there.)

Looks like Barfbag was performed several dozen times in fall '93 on the second European leg of the I&W tour.

Just heard the Majesty version. Not a bad demo... Wonder 2 things. Where are the keyboards? Did they have Kevin in the band yet? I don't hear them at all. & 2. How killer would that sound if that had been mixed for an official release? Pretty killer tune, despite not hearing Moore.

Personally, I love Cry for Freedom. I just wish that there was a good recording of it with vocals. As was mentioned, it's impossible to make out what Chris Collins is singing in the bootleg recording that's available.

Death of Spock was the working title for TOWHtStS. ;-)
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Yeah, I mentioned this earlier in the thread...Kevin was not in the band yet and this was recorded as a three piece. Check out the liner notes for the Majesty Demos Official Bootleg for more details, Portnoy did a great job of providing background info on every track.
