Thought on 12 step suite live.
« on: March 21, 2010, 02:03:09 AM »
Is it just me, or would repentence be really boring live, I mean after the solo?

Therefore, they do a special show, where they play the whole thing, but during the section where people are speaking about their regrets, have as many of them as possible be at the show, come on stage and say it live. I think it would be better than JR triggering samples..

I think it's boring UNTIL the solo, for that solo i bought Systematic Chaos, but if they play the 12 step suite live, it would be kind of a rest from to much metal
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Anyone know what they did during that section the one and only time they played this live?

Not even a bit boring, if it sounds boring then apparently you've never listened closely to the music behind the vocals.

The bit that i find boring is after the spoken word section, where they repeat the same thing a lot. Bearing in mind that i am taking about a live situation, and this song is 10 minutes long.

I agree completely. That section after the solo goes on FOREVER.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I listened to the music underneath quite intently. It's a simple chord progression that goes on way too long.

No.  I like it, but I think both the intro and the outro are too long.

Or mabye you just both have different ideas about what qualifies as boring?

No. Simply there's much more to this part than the "simple chord progression". I know that sections are only good if they have big and obvious riffs and solos, but sometimes it's the subtler things in music that are more important.

I don't understand it eighter how can be so many people so blind and call that section boring or draging or too long or whatever ??? Maybe when you listen just to vocals but what about that awesome bass, strings and piano parts? And even that chord progression alone is enough awesome but okay if it would be just alone it would be repetitive but it isn't!

Yes we know, don't get patronizing. I appreciate the subtler parts of music as much as anyone, and i like the chord progression in question. I think it sounds very atmospheric and forboding. THE FIRST/SECOND TIME! They should have had the repeat where the guy with the low voice talks come in at about 8:14 ish, and then wrap up the song.

What about the piano and guitar in the background? Or do I get hallucinations when listening to it? That's also not subtle, boring and repetitive?

I love how every thread regarding a post-Awake song/album except for a few objects of universal worship can turn into this.

I saw repentence live in NYC when they played it, they cut it short (took out the long outro). I thought it was great and acts as a great "recovery song" from all the heavy metal that precedes it in the 12 steps.

Just because I made a joke about TDS lacking subtlety doesn't mean I hate it.  I love TDS, actually, and I think the craziness at the end is great.  You know, a "just-for-the-hell-of-it" moment of total wankery.  I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I don't think every thread that's about something post-Awake turns into "new" DT bashing.

Darkes7, it has nothing to do with the song being post-Awake.  Most of the people saying they find it repetitive in this thread love a lot of the post-Awake material, myself included.  They are entitled to their opinions as you are entitled to yours.  Quit being obnoxious and condescending toward those who don't agree with you.

What I mean that it's entirely fine to derail a thread into how DT has become soulless/not subtle/cheesy/whatever as long as the album is recent enough. Either I'm paranoid, or I've seen that happen lots of times. It's not a matter of not agreeing.
