I've been a huge fan of Tobi since Mandrake, love everything he does and yeah, everyone he has worked with in Avantasia have been amazing but;

How good is Tate's best these days ?  ;D

You can't polish a turd, no matter how good Tobi is.  If he can get Tate sounding good, he's a genius.

I don't just want the best he can do, he has a standard to live up to compared to all the other singers.  If he's second rate, he shouldn't be there.

And yes, Tobi works the parts for everyone really well.  He makes a guy like Bob Catley just as impressive and important as say a Jorn Lande, even though they are both completely different singers and different skills.  Tate needs to reach that level, and I hope Tobi uses him right.

Apparently the new album will have narration.

you mean other than Tate talking his way through his vocals?   :lol

Do we have a title for this album yet?   How about "The Mystery of Tate"  :)

Ah.....Ghostlights.   Oh well........you could easily fill a concept album with Tate's antics.

From Avantasia FB:

NEW AVANTASIA SINGER

Dee Snider, Geoff Tate, Bob Catley, Michael Kiske, Olli Hartmann, Ronnie Atkins and Jorn Lande… and I want to announce another guest for the new album. Please welcome - from Phoenix Arizona - former Lynch Mob singer and current vocalist of US platinum rockers Warrant: Mr. Robert Mason!

This man must have one of the bluesiest, raspiest and cutting voices I‘ve ever heard. I found it really exciting to approach Robert to sing on Avantasia, a bluesy voice doing some Classic European 'Wagnerian Rock' material. What I knew would be an explosive combination has turned out to be way more than I could have hoped for. He did a hell of a job, and I am sure you will love it. Great voice, Mr. Mason!

Same as Dee Snider for me. Heard the name, heard some Lynch Mob songs, don't know how he's doing nowadays. Anyone?

Excellent singer. The first two Lynch Mob albums were great and he did well with the Warrant album from a few years ago.
The less said about the Big Cock album the better... But the vocals were good.

NOW WE BE TALKING!!

Quote
MARCO HIETALA (NIGHTWISH) ON NEW AVANTASIA ALBUM
News from Tobias:
"What do Geoff Tate, Dee Snider, Michael Kiske, Robert Mason, Jorn Lande, Bob Catley, Ronnie Atkins, Olli Hartmann and me have in common with Marco Hietala of Nightwish? Yes, we're all good looking, funny and amazingly talented… AND: we'll be on the new Avantasia album Ghostlights - out in January 2016.
About Marco: It was August 1997 and we were in Helsinki to mix the Vain Glory Opera album of Edguy when someone played the band Tarot to me. That great band seemed to be some sort of a legend in Finland (in Germany Tarot were not really known at the time). A few years later a band called Nightwish had appeared on the map and were about to take the European Metal world upside down. Edguy played a festival in England with Saxon and amongst others: Nightwish! I remember even though they had a great female vocalist how much I loved the rendition of Ozzy Osbourne's 'Crazy Train' that they did - if I remember correctly - which was sung by their bass player. You know, a lot of bass players are bass players because they wanna be in a band too; and there's only so much damage you can do to the sound of a band with just a bass. Sometimes they're only in the band because they talk enough to organize things or they have a day job to finance the first demo recordings, nice stage clothes, or sun glasses, but at the end of the day, most of them aren't taken seriously because… well, because they're bass players. smile emoticon And they're alway suspicious... wink emoticon Anyway - I don't need a bass player because I play bass myself (not as good as Marco, but I am the cheaper solution for my own project, ha!). AND Marco is more than a bass player, he is a proper musician! I have no clue why it took so long until I eventually asked Marco Hietala (that bass playing vocalist with the two beards and the voice!!) if he could imagine singing a role on an Avantasia album. Now it is happening! And the results kick ass! You will love it! We're putting together an epic Metal record I believe…
Furthermore Robert Mason (Warrant) can been confirmed to sing on the new album as well. Robert first made himself a name back in the early nineties as the lead singer in Lynch Mob. Robert is an amazing singer coming from what some would call a different musical world, and he contributed something very unique to the Avantasia world. He really gave the songs what they needed! You will hear it!
Now go to www.avantasia.net to see details, sign up for the mailing list (and be the first to learn about other shows and guest musicians), get information on the new album or just get a ticket for the tour of tours, the Metal Opera on the road: first show just sold out! Ha!
Cheerz, Tobi"

I LOVE Marco so this is awesome

Now that you mention it, 10 vocalists could be too many. I would've reduced it to 7-8 (like what we had on TMoT). I think I would've cut Geoff Tate (obviously), Ronnie Atkins, Oliver Hartmann from the list. Wouldn't mind seeing Catley replaced with someone new too.

Anyway, I trust Tobi will pull it off.

I'm a huge Avantasia fan as well, and I trust blindly Tobi with his choices, he's always put out excellent albums. Until he will actually release a turd, I will go into any new release with the absolute certainty that it will bloody rock.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

""Folks, I've just received the pre-mix of the new Avantasia/Geoff Tate track - it's a seven-and-a-half minute-monster, and I AM SPEECHLESS! Geoff has made it a killer; reminds me of his Rage For Order era. I grew up with Queensryche, Geoff influenced a lot of us singer people, and listening to that track I know why. Tobi's gonna lose a lot of cred if this is the same-old same-old Tate.  If not, Tate's fans should lynch him for what he has been putting out on his own for the las 10 years.

Maybe it's all an elaborate ruse. Maybe it's really LaTorre that recorded this!

Well, maybe Tate is just lazy on his new records so that he can be lazy on stage? Eh, I don't know... In the studio they can do piece by piece and he can try a powerful note 200 times and it would even be fine if just one of them is actually powerful. At the very least I expect a good performance now (though remaining realistic).

Marco, however  :metal  I have blind faith in that being awesome.

Maybe his performance was tweaked and 'polished' greatly in the mixing stage. Who knows, I don't know what to expect of this lol.

Always pumped for an Avantasia album, but Tate has been pretty 'eh' for the past couple years.

Maybe. As Tate is reliant on others to write the songs and is the boss (other than his wife ) maybe he hasn't been inspired or pushed. At least the songwriting will be quality, something he hasn't had in twenty years.

I'd be happier with him narrating as his speaking voice has always had a pleasant tone. And his performances on recent Albums has been little more than talking.
