Man, I know those guys love to push the whole "We are so fucking prog" thing, but seriously... 77 minutes?  Is there some kind of award given to the band with the longest single track?

It's very impressive, but how often are you going to sit down and listen to a 77-minute song?

Well, usually I listen to whole albums and not just single songs. So its not that big of a deal to me, its just gonna be like a regular album sitting.

Want me to be honest? Since lately I've been preferring shorter, more concise songs, probably not too often :lol Hell, Light of Day, Day of Darkness is my all time favorite song but I don't listen to it very often at all because of the length.

But that doesn't change how goddamn excited I am for The Whirlwind.

I was hoping that as well, but do you think they would have announced the different sections underneath the song? I would think so.

I'm guessing it'll have a movement listing like SDOIT does on the back of the CD case even though TW will be a straight up 77 minute track (from what i understand).
Where would YOU be without prog?!

It would be weird to not have different tracks within the song. I mean the song must have an awesome outro, and you'd really have to sit through the entire album to hear that.

Not necessarily.  I could see it going either way.  This isn't a completely comprehensive news release, so I wouldn't worry simply because separate movements aren't listed here.

I need to have this album. Like, now.
Seriously, a 77 minute epic? If it's anything like past Transatlantic material, this is going to be one amazing listening experience.

I gather that this will be more akin to Neal Morse's ? album, one long piece divided into smaller tracks. How many?

Well ? was 12 tracks over 55 minutes or so. Bridge Across Forever, if you count the different movements, was 17 tracks/parts and was about 77 minutes.

I will be willing to wager that "The Whirlwind" will be about 13-15 tracks, with some sort of Overture, a Finale, and at least one or two movements with the same or similar name!

So today on my lunch, from 1-2pm I listened to Stranger in Your Soul. It finished around 1:30, the time MP posted the news. It's like I was ready to continue the journey through TA!

In any case, I'm extremely fucking pumped, and it's too bad I only got home to my computer 12 hours after the fact. Nice album art too!

*awaits STEVETHEATER to make a kickass wallpaper*  ;D ;D

oh, and if they decide to do a small tour (which I'm assuming they will) I'll give a limb for sure. (DT hasn't any shows booked for November!)

Well, this is prog rock, not prog metal, so PT is nothing alike this.
The older SB albums are comparable to most TA material, with hints of Roine Stolt's genius.
And if you love MP, this could be great for you.

But beware: there is no metal at all, in their older albums. Nothing.

Haha, yes it is.

Unless the different parts of the songs are unrelated, but since they are part of the same song, and more movements instead of parts, and not songs within a suite, or maybe songs within a story, this album could be able to have the possibility to become a concept album.

I think.

Although I don't consider myself as big a prog fan as others here, lately I've come to the conclusion that both of these albums are mostly great.  I had listened to them before, but it just kind of hit me the other day that there is really some genius stuff in here.  Anyway, just wanted to share that revelation.   :metal

PT isn't prog metal, either, though.

That is pretty accurate description.  Really, I have always said TA is like Spock's Beard, but with an All-Star band playing the music.  Nothing against the members of SB, all of whom are talented, but Transatlantic comes across like an prog All-Star band.

Plus, it is the one Neal Morse band/project that features a world class guitar player, which his music deserves.  :coolio

I like that.  I remember that quote from him where he felt like the first two albums weren't "experimental" enough or didn't push the boundaries enough for his liking, and that that was his only real regret.  (although, from what little I've read about him, he may also just have really odd tastes and preferences, so...)  If all these guys are really providing as much input as they want, I think we're in for something special.

Also, bosky, Stolt is a genius, so if they really all contributed equally, we are probably in for a real gem of an album.

I remember him saying that.  I think Morse and Portnoy wanted TA to be like an ode to classic prog, while Roine would have liked to have stretched out a bit more and tried some different things.  That is not to say that he didn't dig the stuff they did, because he has said he did, but the experimental part of him probably just wanted more.

Also, bosky, Stolt is a genius, so if they really all contributed equally, we are probably in for a real gem of an album.

Oh, I'm not denying that.  But I get that impression that, like a lot of geniuses, he's also a bit odd.
