The article I read in Progression talked about a long piece written by Neal as the inspiration for this third Transatlantic album. Basically he had it and didn't feel it really worked on a solo record, and a friend, who Neal knew through church, not religion, suggested Neal put the piece to use in Transatlantic. Neal was really surprised by the suggestion, basically realized it would work, prayed, and ended up setting in motion the reunion. The piece will be on the album, but it was of course very much re-worked by the other three guys once the writing process began.

Ahhh I think I had read that somewhere!! It should be that piece, "Whirlwind", that was mentioned on Neal's boards many many many months ago! As I mentioned, it was said it was over 30 minutes long, so we may get something more akin to "All Of The Above" in length, but perhaps more like his recent solo work (perhaps like "So Many Roads")?

It could be totally unlike his recent solo albums, though, if his friend had said it would work more for TA and Neal himself felt it would not feel right on a solo album, so.... guess we'll find out in about two months!!!

Yeah, I remember Neal talking about it, and I always wondered what happened to it. Also, I believe he said it was ~40 minutes long  :omg:

Well, like I said, they song did not remain intact, so there is always the possibility it got edited down length wise, but on the other hand it could be even longer...

So let me get this straight: on October 27th we will get a new Transatlantic double album featuring a 77 minute song along with 4 other original songs, AND a new Between the Buried and Me album that has the potential to live up to Colors.

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

A real prog band would've just kept going to 80.

And turned the volume knobs up to 11.  :tup

Soooooooo, this was a nice surprise to come home to after working 6am-3pm today!!! Holy crap!!! Neal and the boys doubled the original demo length of "The Whirlwind" and turned it into the entire album!!! HOLY CRAP!!! I can't wait to get this, but it's a shame that the new originals are on the Special Edition! I certainly hope there are enough and I will pre-order the SE as soon as they are available!!!

Between this and the new (fifth) The Tangent album around the same time, this fall is going to be full of great prog!

A 77 minute song... that's insane.

I'll wait to hear the song before I pass judgment but I'm not going to get my hopes up just because of the song's length.

Me: "How?"

Soooo anyone else see any peculiar similarities with TA's new album and PT's new album?

Both titles are "The _____" - The Whirldwind and The Incident

Each album's title track is album-length (77 minutes for TA, 55 minutes for PT)

Each album's second disc has four more original studio tracks, unrelated to the epic title track.

Coincidence?

Yeah, I really think that's just a coincidence. :lol

Especially because the title track to the Transatlantic album has existed in one form or another since before the PT album was announced.

Well, it's a little different in that with Transatlantic the second disc is only a bonus disc with the special edition. The regular edition is just the one song!

True. Although I do wish they had decided to make a regular 2-disc edition of TW (yes, I'm starting the abbreviations now!)... Ah well. Now I have to figure out if there will be different packages for the SE (digipak, jewel case, etc. etc.) and if it'll be worth getting both the 1 disc AND 2 disc... damn my completist mentality!

I believe the term is whirlwound.

So, new Transatlantic sounds pretty awesome, I just hope the 77-minute epic isn't a complete borefest.  If it is I'll be very disappointed.

That's some atrocious artwork. Since they're essentially a homage to prog, why don't TA ever hire someone like Roger Dean or Hugh Syme to do artwork?

Man, I know those guys love to push the whole "We are so fucking prog" thing, but seriously... 77 minutes?  Is there some kind of award given to the band with the longest single track?

It's very impressive, but how often are you going to sit down and listen to a 77-minute song?
