Shhh! You're blowing my cover!

I will say this, though: If the polar bears wasn't on strike all the time, the post would go faster.
Also, dammitnick, you're distracting me from BSG with this talk of boobs and Veronica (two of my favorite things to talk about).

I'm bummed, since I was really looking forward to this album. But, so far it has done nothing for me. I think it's partly because it's so Morse-y, much more so than the other albums. Or it's because Morse didn't used to have such a distinctive style when they wrote the first two. Either way, there's too many moments where I have the impression I'm listening to a Morse solo album. And the last track is just too much so, where I get annnoyed at "the giver of life" that has "given me the key" to a new land.

It's a good effort, but it's nowhere near SMPTe or TBAF.

Quick question... the first CD is divided in songs right?

Not like 6DOIT in Score, right?

I think it's absolutely astounding. I know it will take some more listens to sink in, but my impression as of now is that it will sit nicely in my top 5 of this year. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the lyrics, especially on the final track. Like rumby said, very Morse-y, and very religious, and I don't care much for that. However, the music and most of the lyrics on the rest of the album are extremely good, and I think it's a excellent addition to the Transatlantic discography.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

This album is outstanding. At some points, it is better than STMPe and BAF, but sometimes it's not even close of the epicness of STMPe. As a whole, the Whirlwind is a true masterpiece, but, as I said, there are some parts that brings it down.

But in the end, I prefer All of the Above to The Whirlwind.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I ordered from Radiant and got it this morning.

I got the super-duper deluxe package of "So Many Roads" and "The Whirlwind" and got it on Friday!!! I was so excited! Unfortunately, between work and other duties, I didn't have time to really listen to it until Sunday!

I'll have to post more of my thoughts later as I digest more of the album, particularly the 2nd disc.

Bill, where did you order from?  I did the preorder from Radiant and am wondering whether it is at my house.

judging from the rest of this thread I'd say there's a fair chance it's at your house, but I ordered mine from amazon about a week and a half ago

After one day my verdict is basically that it's not as good as the other two (which doesn't really mean anything, as I consider the other two a masterpieces), but an excellent album. Will almost definitely be in my top 5 for this year. Also, I'd say the 4 originals on the 2nd disc aren't as strong as the main piece.

When I went for the mail this morning the package was face down and pretty wide, I knew it would be 6 discs worth of stuff so it was probably it, however I still had to pray to myself a little bit as I flipped it over hoping to see "Radiant Records" on it somewhere. :D

I stayed up WAY too late last night watching the documentary, and I have to say this is perhaps the best "making of" documentary I have ever seen.  So far, everything about this set is nothing short of spectacular.  I'm not one to usually rush to judgment on new music releases without taking the time to really digest and take things in, but I'm close to calling album of the year.  Oh, and :omg @ a certain *SPOILER* from the documentary:

Nope, the other way around. I had been listening to SB for quite a while before the first Transatlantic came out. At that time there was no Morse solo.

But, the "fault" is definitely with me. I stopped listening to Morse a long time ago, both because of his lyrics (which have become so one-dimensional) and his music (which has become more and more repetitive).
I somehow was hoping that with Transatlantic he would step out of his comfort zone and sort of pick up on his old style (i.e. the sort-of-SB style). When I heard the too-familiar chord progressions on Whirlwind with even-more-familiar lyrics on top, I was disappointed that he had just plugged some of his solo stuff into Transatlantic. Especially the last track probably existed completely written beforehand.

WOW!  Mike sounds incredible on A Salty Dog.  Obviously, I've heard him sing before.  But I've never hard him sing an extended, challenging lead before.  Not saying it's something I would want on a regular basis, but this is really good.

It was my understanding that NM had a treatment called The Whirlwind roughly 30 minutes in length, which the band then fleshed out to its current status.  Of course, I could have simply dreamed that.

My first impressions are actually that it's a good blend of Morse and Stolt, but I must admit that the lyrics overall seem a lot more Christian than I was expecting.  I'm OK with that, obviously, but it was a little weird.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Not sure whether he had that much, but he mentions in the documentary that a while before they got together (I think he said a year or so), a friend of his said something along the lines of, "you should write a song called The Whirlwind and have Transatlantic record it."

Bosk, I completely agree, Building the Bridge was excellent, but this probably goes above and beyond in showing perfectly what a making of documentary should be like.

Definitely.  And it goes beyond just being interesting.  For me, it gave me a greater appreciation for the music on this album as well as the band members.  That's got to count as a success for the band, as far as I'm concerned.
