Antimatter
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:04:15 PM »
I have never seen anyone talk about this band on DTF, although it is (was?) a really cool band. It was formed by Duncan Patterson of Anathema and Mick Moss. They made 3 albums after which Duncan Patterson quit the band to start a new project. Moss made a fourth album together with Danny Cavanaugh (Anathema).

The music on the last two albums (Which I greatly prefer over the first 2) is very depressing rock, not sure how I can describe it. The album 'Planetary Confinement' is more acoustic based and 'Leaving Eden' is more electrical orientated, although they still maintain the same type of sound. I'm not sure to what bands I can compare it. Maybe a little to Anathema (the slower songs) and a bit of Blackfield. I encourage you to just check out one or two songs if you like this kind of music.

Yeah I'm a fan. Only album I have is Planetary Confinement and its really quite good. I should get more of their stuff  :tup
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Hurray, someone else that knows them. Definitely get Leaving Eden, the other two aren't that good imo (they are really electronic, don't really like that).

I have heard of the band through Anathema but have never really listened to them much.

Where should I begin?

I'm a huge fan and having seen them live (Mick and Duncan in an acoustic gig) just made me an even bigger fan.

First thing I heard was Leaving Eden so I can recommend that. I could be biased, though, I love every album.

Either Planetary Confinement or Leaving Eden. I think both are really good.

Awesome, unfortunately I haven't been able to see them live.

Very big bump. Last post was more than a year ago.

I discovered two days ago that they released a compilation album with reworked songs at the end of last year. It's pretty cool for the people that know 'normal' versions of the songs. Also read that a new album is on it's way, which is very good news. Been spinning Leaving Eden and Planetary Confinement lately and I still love them a lot.

I have Lights Out, Planetary Confinement and Leaving Eden. Not one of my favorite bands, but they're quite good, especially in the right mood.

I really only know them/their name from checking Averse last year. The same label Averse released their debut album through, also has released most if not all of Antimatter's. I also noticed most of the people who are into Averse, enjoy them.

Necrobump - I got Antimatter's first 2 albums today and I'll also get Planetary Confinement soon. I like the mellow yet dark atmosphere their music creates, Duncan's writing didn't get any worse after leaving Anathema!

Discovered these during the weekend throughAnathema. Another great sounding band.

Haven't got round to buying any albums yet (probably will when I get some spare cash) - listened to a few tracks from Leaving Eden. Really enjoyed vocals and the feel of the songs.

Great to discover another fantastic band from my city that I didn't know!

I hear also that a new album is being released by them today?

Yeah but the new album is not even close to being half as good as their preavious ones. I'd suggest you work your way chronologically.

I'm their huge fan. I call them like softer Anathema which really suits their music, IMO.

Leaving Eden and Saviour are great albums, on Lights Out and Planetary Confinement the song quality is hit-or-miss. Haven't heard the new album yet, but I'll get it for Christmas.

I have to disagree with those who think Antimatter sounds like Anathema - obviously Duncan was involved originally and even recycled some old Anathema melodies, but those albums, except Planetary Confinement with its semi-acoustic sound, are more electronic/ambient than anything Anathema has done. Maybe Leaving Eden has some similarities because of the guitar-based atmospheric rock sound and Danny's lead playing is recognizable, but it still has notable differences to Anathema.

I'm surprised that nobody is talking about the new album?  You should check it out if you like bands like Anathema and Katatonia.

I was like, WOW, even The Voxyn has returned. But then I noticed this is an 8 year old thread.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Not sure how I've never heard of this band but WTF. It's awesome. Love the singer's voice (sounds like Eddie Vedder but better). And love that dark Katatonia'ish vibe. Antimatter's singer sings on two songs of the new Michel Lapaj (Riverside) solo album. That's how I came across him (Antimatter).

That is great. Mick's voice has been always captivating and haunting.
