I really have not the first clue about this "meme", why it exists, or why it's supposed to be considered even remotely funny, but PLM's last one there is damn funny.  Extra points for :river:

Ironically, not only is this one meme I find always manages to stay fresh while others get old after about 24 hours, I have no idea what the deal is behind 'teh river.'  :-[

Ask Bosky. He started the whole :river: thing :P
Bosky, what is :river:?

It's a body of water that flows by my office.  People often like to engage in water sports and fishing there.

Origins of meme:  I was posting a picture from my office window.  I think it was this one:

Then I posted a follow up:

Somehow, it became on ongoing thing, and just sorta stuck.  I think I put it on another picture sometime later.  Then I posted something, and Cozmo or someone said, "what, no teh river?"  And then I posted this sometime later:

And it just went from there.

2003?  No, it wasn't that long ago.  It was after the forum split, but before the crash.

I just read one of the windows in the taskbar, says something about 2003, just went from there.

Oh, I was wondering where you got that.  No, it's just an old program we use in our office, and the 2003 part shows up in the name.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I believe it was a caption contest.  The picture was of a horse with its head in a hole in the tree.  You captioned it, but added labels and I said "what, no teh river?"

This was the pic:
