I managed to listen only to 'Cry of Achilles'. That's enough awesomeness for today. Holy shit.

Yeah there is a lot of amazing stuff on here to the point where I think it might be their best album to date!

That's fantastic. All I see elsewhere on the internet, is that people seem to be blown away by this.

With the exception of maybe one or two tracks, every song seems to have a lot of room to breathe.
Their best song of all time is still Blackbird... It's going to be tough to top that one but I think this one is very interesting to listen to from start to finish!

I dunno, there were several songs on Fortress that I thought might give Blackbird a run for its money in my book. Especially Calm the Fire. :metal :hefdaddy

The riffing on this album is huge. Definitely a couple of songs with a stronger djent influence than they've exhibited in the past.

Yeah, that was another one. The title track was another contender too, IMO. :metal

Wow, just listened to the whole album! My first impression is that I am very impressed! This album will take a lot more listening to digest but I have to say the boys have done it again, releasing another killer rock record!

I can immediately tell this album will have more staying power than ABIII and will probably wrestle with Blackbird for my favorite AB album.  They really did a great job, mixed up their song writing a little and it sounds like they pulled in lots of different influences too!

Quick highlights from my first listen:

Cry of Achilles: This might be my early favorite on the record, the whole thing is killer with great guitar work throughout and an amazing chorus!

Bleed It Dry: Love the huge heavy riff intro, almost so heavy I didn't think it was AB till the vocals came in! Also probably Marks best solo on the record, he got a real David Gilmour vibe on this one, which provided a great change of pace from the rest of the song.

Lover: Has a killer groove and mood, reminded me a lot of the Mayfield Four.

Calm the Fire: Really interesting intro and riff, sorta sounds like Muse, really different for AB and they pulled it off!

Waters Rising: Classic Mark clean sound in the verses and his vocals work really well with Myles joining him on choruses and then taking over later in the song.

All Ends Well: Beautiful vocal and chorus section!

Fortress: Great guitar work with battling solos, this one will take some time to sink in, but its definitely a great tune!

Those were just a few things that stuck out in my mind with a first listen, can't wait to play this album more and really dive in, but overall I would say these guys haven't let me down at all! This is shaping up to be a great record for the band!!

The cool thing about Calm the Fire was that not only did the band channel their inner Muse during the intro, but the rest of the song sounds like something off of Operation: Mindcrime, done Alter Bridge style. Absolutely insane. :metal

This is so cool. I love the three records, although I feel that with ABIII they did little more than just consolidate their strengths. The album had a few amazing tracks but as a whole it got a little samey (Make it Right, Breathe Again are really standard AB tracks). This one seems to be more experimental in nature. I can't wait to hear what they've accomplished.

I was able to listen to the entire album just a moment ago in solitude, without knowing nearly anything about the album.

About a third of the way into Cry of Achilles I was the most emotional I have ever been listening to an album. It was incredible. I was filled with such happiness when the chorus hit, and then when it was played a second time with a half-time groove I had goosebumps everywhere with the greatest smile on my face. Unreal.

But it didn't stop there. Song after song, they kept bringing it. The energy, the melodic and confident vocals, the bombastic drums, and the oh so tasty riffs, it was all there one after the other.

This is the best record I have heard in the past decade, hands down. I know I'll be dissecting it for ages, but I doubt my mind will change. It's simply brilliant.

I fucking love this band.

P.S.  The main riff of Peace Is Broken is so god damn filthy. My lord.

Did they cut back on the guitar solos or what? Not a bad move at all, because when they do appear they absolutely slay.

Almost fell asleep during 'Cry a River', not a special song at all IMO. Then 'Farther than the Sun' came on. That's what I'm talking about! What a massive groove!

Hmm...

From the top of my head...

There are two in Cry of Achilles
One in Addicted to Pain
One in Bleed It Dry
A bunch in Fortress

I need more listens without any distractions but I'm digging the album. I think it is their best!

Completely agreed. I'd also say this is almost definitely my Album of the Year. It'd take some sort of miracle or deal from the devil for another band to top this album this year. :lol

Honestly, it's between Cry of Achilles and Blackbird for Alter Bridge's best song.

IT'S THAT GOOD.

IT'S THAT GOOD.

I'd be inclined to include Calm the Fire in that running too, and maybe Fortress too. The latter is definitely a grower. :metal But CtF is almost definitely the single best vocal performance I've ever heard from Myles and the song is absolute genius. :hefdaddy

man this album is awesome, such a great groove to most of the song and everything feels a bit more experimental in nature than ABIII

EDIT: All Ends Well is easily my favorite, what a song

What I like about this album is the fact that, so far and keeping the fresh album factor in mind, it has no bad songs. There are weak songs: "The Uninvited" and "Cry a River" didn't click on me that much but were good nonetheless: the album is far more consistent and less samey than ABIII, it keeps you wanting to hear more and more.

Also kudos to "Peace is Broken". It keeps the classic "Alter Bridge" brand sound while sounding fresh and exciting at the same time; something that can't be said about some of the songs on ABIII, which only accomplish the former.

Waaahaha, just got home and i immediately grabbed my headphones and I plugged in. i almost cried tears of joy after hearing Cry of Achilles.  Time to start my musical journey with the album. See ya'll on the other side. I can't wait!

EDIT:

Wow. I have to gather my thoughts. It'll have to be sometime tomorrow because it's 2am here in Los Angeles. First of all, I can't wait to hear this album without all the compression. But there is something supremely beautiful about the evolution of this band. It's the right direction to go.

There's more solos I think, though I'm not sure how many more. I'm re-listening to the album right now, so I'll let you know. Pretty sure Farther Than the Sun also had a solo too, for starters.

Also the solos on Fortress are terrific! :hefdaddy

Waters Rising has a solo, Peace Is Broken has a solo in the end during and after the last chorus, that I can remember off hand. Definitely not just 4 songs with solos, those were probably just the most notable.

Edit: And oh yeah, album is amazing. Not much point trying to say more or pick favourites at this point, there are several candidates for best song, just really enjoying this right now. Album of the year (so far) for me, at least from first impressions.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Cry of Achilles
Addicted to Pain
Bleed It Dry
Peace Is Broken
Waters Rising
Farther Than The Sun
Fortress

So that's 7 out of 12 at least, with maybe one or two more. I know Calm the Fire doesn't have a solo and I don't think The Uninvited has one either. Not sure about Cry A River or All Ends Well. Lover kinda has a brief bluesy solo/lick in-between the first and second verse, but I don't know if that counts or not.

Just finished Cry A River on a listen through and it also has a solo after the last chorus. So yeah, plenty of them on the album.  :tup
