Most musically consistent member?
« on: February 20, 2010, 11:34:30 PM »
So in all their output, which member puts out the most consistently good DT material? This applies lyrically, musically, skill-wise, the whole nine yards.

It's hard to have JLB in there since he usually sings just one voice for DT and lately has virtually 0 input. Same goes with myung, neither really have the chance to change much.

But of the other 3, I'd say portnoy.

It's pretty difficult to point to any one member and say He was really lacking at this point.

Wow, totally misread the point of the thread. I thought you were asking who was more consistent in their style.

Good quality? Musically, JP I'd say.

No one lyrically.

John Petrucci.

EDIT:

JMX. Dude hasn't written a bad song.
I chose JP on impulse, but after reading this, JMX is my choice.

JMX his bass lines haven't been very different since WDaDU. He used to do a lot of leads and you could really hear the bass. Now he's mostly in the background and thats where his consistency lies.

Gotta be J-Pizzle. Man's a guitarbeast. I'm certain he was put onto this earth purely to play guitar at a consistently fantastic level.

Petrucci, only because he's been writing the majority of DT's songs for the longest and his solos are awesome more than 90% of the time. I would say Myung if his bass lines were still interesting.

JP 100%
He has easily been a pillar of strength for this band...and a pillar that has continued to rise...shine...evolve..get better..pick your metaphore.

the musical robot machine and his beeps, boops, and uncertainty about what he'll do..and how he'll fit it into DT's music has been their most inconsistent..and historically the position is one fraught with inconsistency. Myung comes and goes for me. I hear him on one album and the next he's disappeared and barely relevant. I wouldn't say Mike has gone downhill, I think he's just taken over the band as a musical/media manager that his drumming pretty much hasn't flourished.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Positively? JP.

Negatively? MP. Hasn't really advanced his playing over the years. IMHO.

Mike Portnoy has never really had a weak drumming moment.

Jordan Rudess is one of, if not THE best keyboard/piano players I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. When he sits down in front of the keys the music just flows like a stream of consciousness (pun intended). When he joined the band he really added a new level of musicianship to the already amazing Dream Theater.

A lot of guys are saying JP and I'm not quite sure. From 6DOIT to 8vm I just wasn't that into some of his guitar playing, especially the solos. On SC and BCSL his playing's blown me away, but before that I wasn't as into it.

I have to say that SDOIT and 8VM feature some of my favorite moments from JP. Glass Prison you have the arpeggios from Hell (no pun intended), the theme is very well played on guitar during the title track, Blind Faith features one of my favorite solos, the Razor's Edge solo is THE way to end Octavarium, I would definitely say that these reasons and many more qualify JP as the most consistent player.
