« on: February 10, 2010, 01:43:51 PM »
So ive got a Washburn XB600 six string bass, and my dad is a luthier. Im considering having him defret the bass from the seventh fret up only. Foresee any problems?

It's only worth it on a Fender Jazz. I don't think your bass would sound too good, to be honest

not to mention would sound extremely awkward moving from one position to the next. just do the whole thing, or dont do it at all.

I think a half-fretted bass is a cool idea actually.

I don't see how it would help your playing though.

The initial idea is amusing yes, but after that it just doesn't make sense.

Wouldn't it screw up the intonation?

Anyhoo, my cousin defretted one of his basses. Fairly simple to do by yourself, you wouldn't need a luthier for it unless you were reworking the neck too. Just a matter of being careful taking out the frets and taking time over the re-smoothing/re-finishing at the end. There's loads of good guides how to do it online.

Gives it a cool sound.  Especially good for playing jazz.

Jaco Pastorius removed the frets from a Fender Jazz bass and epoxied the fret-board, which gave him his signature sound

I'd love to do the same thing, but I can't afford a Fender Jazz right now :sadpanda:

You did not get my alert. I was not calling the OP a bass n00b, I was making all you guys aware of the fact that I was a n00b enough to ask the question I did. I am sorry if it came off as calling the OP a n00b.

understood. fretless basses simply sound amazing. much like an upright bass, or another other fretless instrument, and can get much more natural woody tones.

I have a KSD 5 string lefty model of a Fender Jazz. I think the pick ups are active (a place for a 9 volt) and it is fretless...anybody want it?

You could, but it would be really awkward... especially being a 5 string. :p

Honestly, put it on ebay or craigslist, you can probably get a nice chunk of change for it.
