It's Grammy Night...
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:15:57 PM »
Will Dream Theater ever be nominated for a Grammy during their career? I know some fans may not want that level of publicity, but others would. Do you think they will ever earn the acheivement (Even if the Grammy's are somewhat of a joke nowadays)

They'll never be nominated because the Grammys are just a pop music circle jerk.
I'm all for DT getting more publicity and reaching a higher echelon of success, but I'd rather it be in a more dignified way.

Like all mainstream awards shows, the Grammy awards are just another popularity contest that I won't waste my time with. Yeah, it would be great to see DT get some mainstream recognition, but it appears they're already doing pretty well without said recognition, so screw those awards shows. I haven't watched ANY of them in years and I won't waste any more time with them.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

DT could be nominated for a sound award like Porcupine Tree, but it's very unlikely they'll win one of the big awards.

Except that DT's stuff never "sounds" even close to as good as PT's does. :p

But yeah, the Grammys blow.  I am pretty sure most knowledgeable music fans know this.

That's what I was thinking.

And like I mentioned before, I know that the Grammy's are worthless, just posing a question

I could just imagine DT winning best album award.

John Myung accepts the award and then Taylor Swift comes up and says, "Imma let you finish but Nickelback had one of the best progcore albums of all time."

Plus they haven't really done anything Grammy worthy in awhile.

This.  There's no way that DT could suck bad enough to win a grammy.  :lol

You're right, I don't think they have been bad enough to deserve a Grammy since the beginning of their career  ;)

DT will never win a Grammy. And frankly, they're not the best at anything anymore, so they don't deserve one.

True.  If they didn't win anything for I&W or Awake, they never will.

Are you going by the DT standards? Are you saying these other bands deserve to win awards? Obviously we know BC&SL wouldn't win over I&W for example, but are you saying Lady GaGa is more talented and makes better music that should get more recognition than Black Clouds?

Even in the metal category, you don't think BC&SL has a chance against any of those albums?

EDIT: And what are your definitions of Grammy-worthy?

According to MP's twitter:

"F*ck the Grammys..."

so there you go.

Is that sour-grapes reaction necessary by MP?  I mean, DT has had a successful career in its own right.  Be happy for the other musicians that are being honored.  And I wouldn't rule out a grammy someday.  After all, Queensryche was nominated for a grammy back in the early 1990s.

Doesn't at all sound like sour grapes. I think his comment was exactly reacting to the point that DT are successful and don't care about having a Grammy. A Grammy wouldn't mean a thing to a band like DT.

I think what he meant by grammy worthy is something along the lines of You Not Me, maybe.   :lol

False, they´re not clueless. They´re aware of what´s popular at the moment, which is what matters after all.
