Fuck, Romantic Warrior was the first jazz-rock fusion album I ever heard, at age 17.
Awful news. One of the greatest musicians to ever live.

Was a sideman for another musical legend, Miles Davis.
Led one of the most famous jazz-rock bands, Return To Forever.
Performed and recorded with many other musicians like Herbie Hancock, Miroslav Vitous, Cal Tjader, Pat Metheny, Antonio Sanchez, Herbie Mann, Gary Burton, and many others.

RIP

I don't know that I've ever heard anything he did, but he's one of those legendary names that you just know.

He won 23 Grammy's (9th most all time) in six straight decades.

This one hit hard :'(

Listening to Spain right now.

Well. Shit. This is unwelcome news.

My evening plans just changed. I think a Return to Forever marathon (starting with Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy!) will do nicely. Of course fine brews will be required, so trip to the store is in order. Thankfully I've already got the other necessary supplies.  :hat

this is pretty crushing to learn about as I love Return to Forever and saw him live 3 times, twice with RTF.

he really was the leader of what became the Jazz-Fusion. I first saw him live 20 years ago last December, and it was more or less then I got into Jazz Fusion.

also how sudden and out of nowhere this happened, as he really seemed to be doing well and upbeat throughout COVID, doing live streams and sending emails out regularly.

Just reading what Al Di Meola wrote on FB a little bit ago, it kind of hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was very late into the RTF party, but the Elektric Band was a huge influence for me when I first started playing music and got into jazz/fusion. Every project he was involved with was fantastic.

Hard to find people as naturally gifted as him. One of those people that has no filter between their brains and their hands so that they can just effortlessly play what's going on in their head.

He also left a nice going away message. I always appreciate that.

I want to thank all of those along my journey who have helped keep the music fires burning bright. It is my hope that those who have an inkling to play, write, perform or otherwise, do so. If not for yourself then for the rest of us. It’s not only that the world needs more artists, it’s also just a lot of fun.

And to my amazing musician friends who have been like family to me as long as I’ve known you: It has been a blessing and an honor learning from and playing with all of you. My mission has always been to bring the joy of creating anywhere I could, and to have done so with all the artists that I admire so dearly—this has been the richness of my life.

A living legend who has played with other legends. That’s a shame, especially since his passing is so unexpected. Unfortunately never got to see him live.

I recently explored some of his work on ECM. Obviously we all know the Return To Forever album which is a classic in the fusion genre, Crystal Silence with Gary Burton is well known, a great duo piece, and the somewhat lesser known but pretty insane, almost free, ARC album. But I discovered Piano Improvisations Vol. 1, which contains a lot of his most well known themes, last year. This became my new favorite Chick album, even if I'm not always excited about solo piano albums. It's a wonderful listen, a good album to decompress to.

Of course, his fusion bands Return to Forever and Chick Corea Elektric Band put out some of the funkiest music this side of jazz.

I always liked the Elektric Band's album Paint the World, which was another early jazz discovery for me. Sounds more modern than the earlier 80s-tinged albums, but doesn't sound cold and clinical like later releases like To The Stars. I also recently realized that before Frank Gambale joined CCEB, the guitarist on the first self-titled debut was Scott Henderson of Tribal Tech fame, another awesome fusion band. Chick always liked having guitarists with speed metal chops in his fusion bands.

Yesterday I listened to Romantic Warrior and No Mystery, two of my favorite RTF albums. Killer stuff all the way through. The production on RW particularly, has to be some of the best of the era it came out in (mid 70s)

Going through his discography, I was reminded of this great album from 2009

Just look at that lineup! That's all that needs to be said.

I own it and it's my alltime favourite album by him.

My daughter's former high school band director posted this on Facebook yesterday.  For anyone who doesn't know, the Blue Devils are a "drum corps," which is basically a marching band with no woodwinds.  Marching Band kids can play in a DCI corps after high school in addition to or instead of playing in the college band.  Seems that Corea was a big supporter of marching bands and drum corps, and his music turns up not uncommonly in their repertoires.  May daughter's former band director was a member of the Blue Devils in the mid-90s.

Yes, I love what they did together!  :heart Gary is another genius on his instrument.

That's awesome!

Always had a huge respect for DCI and especially Blue Devils. You have an amazing breeding ground for musicians in the states through all your corps and college bands up till high level competitions like what DCI are doing and others.

Since his passing, I've been listening to at least one Chick Corea related album most days. He has so many albums. I did not realize how many albums I had never listened to before, or hadn't given much attention. Those Trilogy albums from the last few years are good stuff.

Not to mention all the albums he appeared on as a sideman, which is about the same amount of albums he put out himself under his name or under one of his bands, if not more.

So... dumb question that has bugged me for a while.  I'm familiar with the man, and some of his music.  But... I've never HEARD (vocally) his name.   "Corea" as in "Korea"?   Or something else?  Like "CORE-ee-a".
