What was important was the scale comparison.  I look for geography being superimposed all the time to put things in perspective.  Seeing it on a complete globe or map isn't the best way to realize this scale.  Especially when the scale is altered to turn a globe into a rectangle

Also the Bataclan - Dream Theater reference was a very good one as empathy usually drives you into a deeper state of understanding.  Kudos for the reference.

And I wish all of those that were injured in Paris a speedy and full recovery.  But make sure you keep a tiny scar so you never have to worry about your opening line for that girl/guy across the room you wish to impress into your arms.

Well if you want to have the scale in order to be informed I'll put a map together tomorrow so you can see the actual scale of Europe compared to the US.

FracturedMirror:  I understood where you're coming from (and thanks for the history lesson on LIVEtime).  One doesn't get the complete joy in hearing a Beatle/Lennon song since 1980.

Events such as this were in the back of my mind when visiting Rome and Barcelona for the first time last year.  My wife loves Paris, and wants us to go in two years.  I'm not so sure of that.

It's happened here in Oklahoma City, WTC in '93, the Boston Marathon.....and I think of it every time we visit NYC.  Psychopathic cowards killing innocents for the sake of killing.
DragonAttack, please don't let this horrible act keep you from visiting Paris or anywhere else in Europe. Don't let these relatively rare attacks cause you to lose the spirit of travel. Paris is a wonderful city and France is a beautiful country. The best protest to extremism is travel. Don't let terrorists take that away from you.

For now here's something I found on Reddit. Unfortunately a decent proportion of the US is in the water (and Alaska is missing) but you can see that huge swaths of Russia and Scandinavia, as well as most of southern Europe is not covered by the American landmass at all, so it pretty much cancels out. At the end of the day Europe is a little bit bigger than the USA.

Which is the original point.  Not to think in terms of separation by country, but an attack being where your relatives live one to two states over.  Paris was the target, but I'm sure there were people in Europe that were on edge that it could hit them as well while it was going on.  And that's what 9/11 felt like in the US.  If you were near a major city, it seemed plausible that your city could get entangled in a heart beat.

Add in the fact that the Muslim population is much closer to Europe and .... terrorism.  Not by body count, but by a momentary loss of security.

Such a brutal, unforgivable act.  You can't help but to feel sick over this.  Hopfully justice is served in the future.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

I truly hope so. But, you know, that's what we heard in January when the attacks on Charlie Hebdo and the Hyper Casher occurred. And see what happened! Unfortunately, I guess that we people of France have to get used to living in a country where such things will happen more and more. Hope I'm wrong though.

Already hearing politicians over here speak about planning the elimination of the IS, I really hope this doesn't grow out of proportion..

Eliminating IS would be great, I just think it can't be done. How do you defeat an ideology? It's just with the shootings in the US, when someone plans something like this was planned and just start shooting at crowds and blowing themselves up because the afterlife reward will be far greater then the one on this earth, how does one stop that? You can't just say 'let's bomb them back to the Stone-age', because they've been living in it for so long. Education is the sollution, but there will always be fanatics. Just get special forces in there an pick off the main offenders one by one by gathering intel on the ground, I guess.

Saw four friends talk about their horrific experience at the Bataclan yesterday on tv. They travelled from the Netherlands to France just to see a concert and got caught in this nightmare. They unknowingly of eachother scrambled over fallen body's, some on top of them, to finally get to the emergency exit and they could escape into the alley we've all seen footage from. One even stopped to try and move a wounded guy that had been shot in the hip while he heard the shooting get nearer. He refused to leave the wounded guy behind and finally someone helped him drag the guy out of there with him. Chills me to the bone. One had lost his phone and the rest freaked out texting the others about whether he was safe or not.
These friends were helped by civilians to be safe in some house. Later that night they drove back and once out of Paris finally felt 'safe'.  They say that was the longest drive of their lives.

These people never will get over it.  Possibly in 20 to 30 years, but the fear and reaction to "violent" sounds of which you can't pinpoint the location will always be there.  I had a traumatic experience that has stayed with me to this day, and it was a fraction of what these people went through.

Yes, me too, and everyone handles these things differently. I think the people who repress those thoughts get haunted by them most in the end, my experience wasn't nearly as horrifying as the one these four guys went through, but again, it's different for every individual.

Well, one of them said he couldn´t talk about anything else. They´ve been interviewed by a ton of media, but only one of them offered them professional help.
