The Beer Thread: Reloaded
« on: July 23, 2015, 01:30:01 PM »
Here is the old one:

https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=12892.msg425183#msg425183

It's summer, its hot, and I like beer.  Unfortunately, I don't want an IPA, porter or an imperial stout when I'm hot and all the "good" beers seem to consist of hops-to-the-max IPA's, etc.  Where are the good lagers and pilsners?  I've come across a few at restaurants, but never in stores.  Beers like Jever and Steigl, nice bright grassy and crisp beers are nowhere to be found in beer stores.

Just read this article, and I had to agree with this point:

Quote
Imagine this. It’s a blazing hot day. The sun is beating down. You’ve sweated through your clothes. Steam rises off the blacktop and it feels like your body is on fire. Suddenly, the silhouette of a person—an angel? Your brain is too fried to tell—blocks the sun.

“You look thirsty,” they say.

You nod, desperate.

“Here. Take this”—they hold out a bottle —“German style schwarzbier.”

It was a trick. That wasn’t an angel, but a demon. It’s trying to poison you with a heavy beer on a hot day. You die on the sidewalk, alone and with an awful taste in your mouth.

I'd prefer a cold high life to a Dogfish Head 60 minute (my favorite IPA) in that situation.

I agree with you.  IPAs, porters, and stouts are awful ideas when it's hot.

Of course, I'm not a huge IPA fan to begin with.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Odd thing. When I had my transplant one of the docs told me that it's common for people to develop a real taste for something they were previously ambivalent to. Some guy who hated asparagus starts eating it by the bushel; that sort of thing.  I haven't noticed that, but I seem to have lost almost all interest in beer, where I was previously a fan. Most of the beer I preferred a couple of years ago I find rather awful now. What I seem to enjoy most now is a frosty-cold pilsner.

Since I had gotten off of pales and IPAs a couple of years before the kidney business, perhaps I've regained my interest. I should probably check that out.

Here is a beer my brother and I brewed in honor of our mom on her birthday weekend.  It's a farmhouse ale made with a french yeast.  6% ABV.  I'm having one now.

Bart, that is very interesting. I've heard that before as well.  Maybe the sharpness of an IPA is different to your tastebuds.  I wonder how all the spicy food you like affect you now?

It's always a good time to have an IPA or stout.

I enjoy IPAs and stouts, but this wonderful revolution in beer seems rather limited in style.  On a brief tour of my local distributor's shelves you'll find about 80% IPAs/pale ales and the rest are coffee or oatmeal or other such stout styles.  I want to see the same micro brew effort in the pilsner, lager, kolsch styles.

From what I know about brewing, it's a bit easier to make ales than lagers, since lagers need cold fermenting.  This might explain why all the new breweries start with ales.

That is dead on right.  I still have 10 bottles of our Belgium Quad. Aged a year and 1/2.

Drinkin Ranger IPA right now because I literally have to drive 25 miles to get anything I like as much or better without it being retardedly cost prohibitive. Basically, something like Stone's line of ales/IPAs are every bit as good as it or more appealing to me in the case of Ruination but they can fuck themselves with one of their bottles if they think charging me $12 a sixer will result in me buying their brand any more than a few times a year. I wish Great Divide made affordable 4-packs since their stuff is high enough quality and alcoholic enough to warrant a $10 price.

I got no problem with a good IPA on a hot summer day. Of course, I'm just as good with an el cheapo case of Miller High Life too.

I'm all about Belgian-style stuff this time of year. Fucking saisons  :heart
My go-tos this summer have been Great Divide's Colette and Avery's Perzik (peach saison, not super fruity though). Both absolutely delicious and perfect for the weather. I will occasionally have an IPA or stout in the summer (because really, I always love stouts), but not if I'm sitting outside.
I agree that some breweries need to chill out on the IPAs, but there is an unbelievable variety of beer being brewed around here right now, so I can't complain at all. We have a few breweries in the Denver area solely dedicated to German-style beers, a few Belgian-style breweries, barrel-aged/sour places... even one brewery that only makes red ales (but lots of different styles). Oh, and we have two heavy metal breweries  :metal
It's overwhelming, the amount of Colorado breweries that have popped up in the last few years, but there is never an absence of amazing beer. For that I am very grateful... and about 20lbs heavier.
Oh Jackie, always jumping to the most homoerotic possibility.

There are a shit-ton of breweries here in North Carolina, as well.  A bar recently opened not too far from where I work that ONLY serves NC beer.

I saw a special about Trio last week on our state public television.  It looked like a great place.

Still never been to the Outer Banks.  I need to get out there.  Looks peaceful and gorgeous.

It was. Very relaxing.  If the wife likes wine and cheese Hef, go to Trio

to the op: six point makes a pretty good pilsner called the crisp, and otter creek's brewmaster mike collaborated w/ jacks abbey to make a 'nouveau pilsner' that i liked a lot. i don't know if you's be able to get that wherever you are, but if you can find them, i would def recommend them.

some other beer that'd i've had this summer include some ballast point grapefruit sculpin ipa, new england brewing's sea hag (also an ipa), six point resin ipa, six point sweet action (cream ale), and some harpoon ufo stuff which i'm really into (the grapefruit shandy was very good).

oh, and my brother got some sip of sunshine (ipa) which is extremely hard to get right now.
prog sucks

Thanks for the tips.  I've tried the UFO grapefruit and thought it was pretty good.  Maybe a bit too much grapefruit, but good overall.

Two nights ago, I had Great Lakes' Edmund Fitzgerald Porter.  Much better on tap, as I've only had it bottled.
