Official DTF Ska Thread

Why ska you may ask? Why not?

Ska is an excellent change of pace. About once every 4 months, I listen to ska and nothing else for about a week. Operation Ivy, Big D and the Kids Table, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones are my artists of choice.

Discuss the genre.

Ska is one of those things that I almost never voluntarily put on (except for a few select songs), but always enjoy when it when I hear it. Ska live shows are tons of fun too. Streetlight Manifesto FTW.

Until recently I hadn't heard much Ska at all, but the songs my friend sent owned. Feel free to recommend some bands to a newb :)

Streetlight Manifesto FTW.

This.  Nobody does it better than them.

The three I posted are my recommendations. Energy is an essential album.

Big D and the Kids Table are a great ska band, seeing them live was awesome. All their albums are pretty amazing.

I've been listening to The Fury of the Aquabats! The Aquabats (shockingly) a ton lately.

Yay ska! I had a ska band in high school, my buddy's brother was in Reel Big Fish at the time and we really tried to emulate their sound.  I transferred over all my old ska cds when mp3 players hit, and I still listen to them from time to time.  As already mentioned in this thread, Op Ivy and Mighty Mighty Bosstones are the best them.  For traditional ska I would suggest Hepcat, or the godfathers of the genre, the Wailers.

I saw The Aquabats live once, they were absolutely hilarious.

Anyway, Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto used to be my two favorite bands back in the day. I can't take too much of either band nowadays but ska will always have a place in my heart.

I saw the Aquabats live quite a few times back when they were first coming up, around '96-'97.  Their shows were pretty awesome, lots of costumes and props.  Pretty sure some lucha libre wrestlers were involved at one point.  They also used to throw a lot of shit at the audience.  At one gig I got a nice ranch dressing bomb all over a brand new hoodie sweatshirt.  I was  :sadpanda:.

All of this. I never listen to ska on my own, but one of my friends loves it, and I enjoy listening to it when I hang out with him.

I'm enjoying The Dirty Heads, Pepper, Aer, and Katastro after seeing them this summer at Red Rocks.  Also enjoy Slightly Stoopid.

Whoa necrothread v. Ska. I like it. I totally forgot I made this thread, but considering my current band plays ska I suppose it was sort of a premonition. :p

I've been really into Streetlight Manifesto, Mustard Plug (totally opening for them in a few weeks zomg), Common Rider, and Operation Ivy lately. The Op Ivy love never really goes away though. That album is fucking insanely good.

I've heard a few things from Slightly Stoopid but none of the others. Gotta expand my ska knowledge so I'll have to check them out.

As a massive ska punk fan I highly recommend Random Hand, King Prawn  and Choking Victim. I love all the previously mentioned bands, especially Reel big fish and Streetlight Manifesto. If you like the bands I mentioned I can recommend loads more.

Try 'Play some ska' by Random hand, Dominant view by King Prawn and '500 channels' by Choking Victim.

Went to my first ska show in years last weekend, saw Reel Big Fish and Less Than Jake.  What a fun show and really brought back memories of how much fun this music is and how it has such a great and respectful following/culture to it.

Really looking forward to another similar experience in the future.

I also should add I spent wayyyy too much money on those tickets since it was sold out and had to resort to stubhub... but it was worth it!

Make sure you don't miss Mad Caddies' album "Just one more". So much win.
