Special guests at live shows
« on: March 25, 2014, 03:52:47 PM »
I know there were several artists appearances at some DT concerts..

Here with Joe Satriani, playing Take the Time.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2uf43xG3Lk Awesome vid..

I know they've play with this guys too: Mikael Åkerfeldt, Tony Levin, Queensrÿche's guys, Eugene Friesen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-3r-NuuQ-I.. Exceptional video).. Well, and Charlie Dominici/Derek Sherinian that time..

I also know they've played with Dickinson, but I haven't found any video yet.. Have any of you been in some of these special shows? Or remember any other guest artist?

I was at the London show in 2005 when Theresa Thomason and Norbert Stachel were special guests during DSOTM (and TSCO for Theresa). And the show in 2009 when Akerfeldt did the growling bit in ANTR and various drummers joined MP for Percussive Nation.

On the Six Degrees tour, they played a show in Boston where MP did a drum solo and Mangini came out and sat in and played the solo with him on that giant kit.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

And I was there for that.  I was a very cool surprise.

I'm not an Akerfedt fan and I think his vocals are horrible. If they were going to use him, I felt a more effective use would've been to have him do the spoken word stuff live. That would've been cool IMHO.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

On the first American leg of the SDOIT tour in 2002 Chris Jericho guested with the band and sang PMU if I remember correctly.
Unfortunately I am not aware of any bootlegs in circulation of this gig. I was always hoping for a Ytse Jam  release of this concert but it will never be I guess.

Ray Alder (Fates Warning) sang backing vocals on PMU in Los Angeles in 1998 and Bruce Dickinson joined them for a couple of Maiden songs: https://mikeportnoy.com/dates/tourography/?show=427

Why? ??? He sings perfectly in key and doesn't deviate from the original version.

Eh, it's not always like that. I dig Mikael Akerfeldt, and agree with you, it's a smashing rendition of Repentance, but I have the exact same thing with other vocalists. Neal Morse, is perfectly capable, perfectly powerful, and sometimes really good, but he hits this groove where I always think he sounds really smug. His vocals are my least favourite thing about Flying Colors.

It's a matter of taste. Not a lot of people are going, "I don't like James LaBrie, he's not very talented." Even live, he's one of the better vocalists, and one of the very best at fifty - more often it'll be that there's something about the timbre that doesn't appeal. He's got a distinctive voice, isn't for everyone. Akerfeldt's going to be exactly the same.

I just feldt  ;D that if they were going to use him, it would be really cool if he did the spoken word stuff live. I think that would've been very effective and clever.
