Final Fantasy

Any other fellow FF nerds out there? Which games have you played and how do they rank for you?

A buddy of mine's been on a quest to work through them in chronological order and I decided to hop on the train with him when we recently made his way to FFIV. I played a good chunk of the SNES version on an emulator years ago, but am 7hrs into the 3D version on iOS. Has been a great activity to working my way back through DT's catalogue (though I still can't make it all the way through TA).

Have so far completed stories on VI, VII, X, XII, and XV.

I played some of the early ones (III, IV and V), and completed VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, X-2, and XII. I played XV a little as well.

IX, X and VI are my favorite. VII I never cared for (even though is regarded as one of the best), VIII was fun but lackluster. X-2 tried to built on X with a watered down story, and I think it failed.  XII was fine, nothing special.

VI VII VIII and IX is where it's at for me, especially VII which, yes, it's hyped as hell, but it's really a very contextual "you had to be there and then" thing.

My favourite one is probably XII or og VII at this point in time. With X and VI being up there as well. My favourites used to be VI and VIII, but my "recent" (2018 to now) replays as an adult/older person shifted them. VI is still very good, but I found the dialouge and characterization to be on a much lower level than I remembered (and conversely XII was better on this front than I remembered). But  FFVI shines with it's many scenarios and setpieces, as well as the godtier music (probably best OST ever). VIII is a weird one. It is a mess but such a charming one.

The only FF I had a bad time with I played is XVI, which I think sucks.

Perhaps, but I played VIII and VIII when I was around when I entered my 20's after 2010 and I never touched them in the 90's or earlier 00's. Was a N64 kid, as were all the kids in my hometown/school. I love VII and VIII and am now playing VII on my Switch and still love it (remake didn't do much for me though).

My first FF's were the SNES ones (IV and III/VI) on emulators and the gameboy advance somewhere around the time X came out. And X was my first actual console on played on the TV, I think I bought it in like 2002.

I still want to really play V and IX properly, as well as give the XIII trilogy a chance. I don't think I will ever really play I, II, and XI properly. XIV maybe, I did play a bit last year.

I was once a pretty big fan of this series, but I'm more cautious these days. FFXVI really let me down, and while FFXII, FFXIII and FFXV were all enjoyable enjoyable games to me, I do feel like each lacked something I'd come to expect from an FF.

I've played (and completed) I, IV, VII, VIII, IX, X, XIII, and XV.
In addition to those, I've played large chunks of VI and XII, but just never got around to completing either.

Most recently, I bought the pixel remaster of the first game on Switch, and completed that. I loved it. Sometime next year, I'm planning to play FFII. And then I have III, V, and VI to look forward. So, even if SE never make a good FF again, there's plenty left to explore.

Also, you can still count on Square to make a good RPG, if not a good FF. I played Octopath Traveller II this year, and loved it. In addition, they remade both Star Ocean 2 and Mario RPG, which I played recently. Finally, there are the Dragon Quest games (I played both I and XI this year - and loved them both). Guess I'm a bit of a JRPG nerd.

Around the time of XII, I tried to play through all of them and did, but didn't make it far in the early ones.

I love VII and its been my favorite game for years. Really enjoying the remake as well.
I like VIII a lot but admit its flaws
Played X all the way through and enjoyed it
VI is my 2nd favorite FF game. Didn't get to finish it though 

I wanted to love XV, but It felt too much like an unfinished game.

But overall the FF series has been near and dear to my heart for most of my life

I think FF6 - 9 found the perfect FF formula.  The latter entries lost the freedom of exploration and became to linear, FF6 to 9 rewarded you with a cool cutscene after achieving something important in the game.  FF10 (the most overrated IMO) rewarded you with a slight bit of gameplay after having to watch a massive cutscene (and often the story progressed though cutscene, rather than gameplay).

FF7 remains my personal favorite - so much to explore in that game, stuff to find (including 2 hidden characters, each with their own storylines). 

Also it's a personal thing but I miss the option to rename your characters (obviously voice acting killed this).

I feel XII has great exploration and good sidecontent. But the combat is very different, so I get why people don't vibe with it. It is a bit inbetween earlier Bioware games and MMOs. I also get why some people don't like being a young dude/kid from the streets that winds up in a massive political plotline, but I found Vaan to be fine. As a kid I did not find him cool enough, as an adult I didn't mind him at all.
