Anyone got experience with electronic drum sets?
« on: August 08, 2013, 05:41:07 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm starting a rock band with my friends this semester when I get back in town, and am gonna be taking up drumming again. I have a really great acoustic set with tons of cymbals and everything but I can't have that in my apartment, it remains stored in my friend's garage. I will be able to use that for gigs and such, but I am seriously considering buying an electronic kit to have in my apartment so I can still practice regularly, whenever I want. I'm looking at really really cheap options because, while I have money, I need to be saving most of it right now.

The best thing I've found so far is the Simmons SD5X. $350 on Musician's Friend. Mostly good reviews wherever I've looked. If anyone has experience with this set specifically, great. Otherewise, any suggestions or warnings? Even if the set isn't all that great, it doesn't matter much to me since I have my acoustic for actual performance. I just need a way to keep my basic chops up to snuff. Oh and whatever electronic kit I get has to be capable of double bass. the SD5X should work fine since I have my own double-bass pedal, and it just has a pad to hit, instead of a "fake" pedal.

The Roland TD-9 is awesome but might be a bit pricey :/

I've got a second-hand Yamaha DTXpress IV, it's great. I don't know if you've ever played on an electric drum kit though; it feels really different. It's great for practising though, and if you don't completely hate it you'll get used to the feel really quick (I did). Second-hands are a good option, but make sure you test them before buying them. Make sure the pads always trigger when you hit them, and if they don't, try the pad settings to see if they're broken or just set incorrectly.

Yeah - those mesh heads on the Roland TD series just make playing so much easier.

You play on one for ages then go back to an acoustic kit and you wonder why you're not as good suddenly :lol

I haven't played one before, but I am expecting it to be extremely different, so not worried about that. It will be pretty much exclusively for practicing at home. I'll have to check out if there are any used ones in my school area. Thanks guys!
