PC Hacked ?
« on: April 12, 2013, 09:21:52 AM »
Okay i think my PC may have been hacked

Received about 30 calls this morning from various loan shops all saying they received my on-line application ( which I did not fill out) .

CMD
Net users -only shows my account on the PC

I run malwares anti-byte and AVG on the computer daily...neither shows a threat

Any other free software I can use or am I a victim of identity theft?  Went through this 4 years ago and its not fun

I'd be on the phone with Experian an Equifax yesterday.

Someone might have gone dumpster diving or even just stole your mail and got some basic ID, so there are some non-computer theories as well.

stolen mail very possible  since our mailboxes are located outside the buildings and are not locked...dumpster diving not so much since I shred all mail before it goes in the garbage

Like I said..I have had my identity stolen before

If you're always running those security programs on your computer, the odds of your computer being taken over are slim (not impossible), but very slim.  My bet is they got your information the old fashioned way.  Have you looked into LifeLock at all?  $10/month, and if this had happened while subscribed, they would have called you first before any of those loan places called you, you say it wasn't you, and you're done.  They've only called me once in the past few years I've had them, and it was for a legitimate charge, which was just as easy to clear up.

IIRC, your computer isn't that old. Has it ever even seen the sort of info that would be required for a loan app? I'm trying to think if my computer has ever seen an SSN, and I don't think it has.

When I was still regularly looking for a job, I made a mistake of putting my resume up on Monster and those other job sites. Within a few days, Insurance salesmen were spamming my inbox and phone with employment opportunities. Monster must stop selling you out eventually though because 2 months or so after finding a job all those calls stopped.

I was getting phone calls for a while from 1-800 service numbers.  It was a recording that said something about my student loan and it gave me a number to call.  I've never had a student loan and even if I wanted to apply, I wouldn't qualify because the company I work for pays for education.  Anyway, it turned out to be nothing.  I'm pretty sure it was some type of scam trying to get people to call back so they can get information.

Were the calls you got live people or recordings?  Either way, they are probably looking for information.  Just don't give them any.

I know you said you've been through ID theft before (and sorry you seem to be going through it again), but in addition to Experian/Equifax, I'd also suggest you contact:

Federal Trade Commission
Social Security Administration (either at 1-800-772-1213 or https://www.ssa.gov)
IRS

Hope this helps, and hang in there!

@ Barto...yes my PC has seen info required for a loan app , was in a pinch for funds (family emergency) and needed a payday loan

@PC...my resume was up on Monster and other jobs sites when I was unemployed from 2009-2010

@Dub...automated calls, when I answered it would ring back on their side and someone would thank me for me loan app...I just kindly told them I never applied and they removed my so-called application

@Debra....after contacting the credit union...the FTC was the next place I went ( having been through this before)

Now I'm getting calls from agencies claiming to be the local police in various cities around the country ( but they all have indian accents lol) saying that I have a warrant outstanding for fraud on loans I supposedly took, and never paid back

woah
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces
