Superstitions
« on: December 20, 2012, 05:47:59 AM »
Are you superstitous? Yes? No? If so... what are the things you avoid doing? (Kinda inspired by Rumby's row 13 airplane thread)

Myself... Honestly... I don't listen to Rooster (Alice In Chains). A couple years ago my ex and I were in an accident that, by the grace of god above, we both survived... (HA!)... We hit a wall and barely missed a tree... if we would have been a foot further in either direction, the wall or the tree would have killed one of us. Well Rooster was playing in the car when it happened. I was obsessed with the song for a week leading up to the crash... and now I refuse to listen to it. Yes it is stupid to believe a song is bad luck but... whatevs...

What about y'all?

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I have my own, little superstitious things. Like I don't look in the mirror in darkness. But things like those are only my concern and not bothering anyone.

But things like what Rumby's wrote, seem pretty silly. They are big superstitious and handicap for others routine lives.

I'm not superstitious. Unless I have some factual basis to fear something (rather than baseless archaic myths from a time when people didn't know better), then I don't worry about it.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

My whole worldview is based on them.  Superstition equals magic you don't agree with.  Magic you agree with is called truth.

No. I drive with my stereo on volume 13, wander under ladders and never 'touch wood'
Every story needs to have an ending, we might as well give up all this pretending and clear the air...

I don't walk under ladders, and am careful with mirrors.

On Thanksgiving, I went to my s.o's parents' house. I did the wishbone with his mom. She had the larger piece and made the wish, even though our wish was the same. December 5th, our wish came true when we got engaged.

I'm not superstitious at all. Can't really think of anything. I have favorite numbers...but they don't affect any choices in things other than simple random gambling situations.

I'm not superstitious.  I believe certain occurrences are purely circumstantial and may coincide with other circumstantial situations but no two can have exactly the same result.

I avoid saying certain things in fear of jinxing myself. Also. Karma plays a huge factor in my life. I made a list of all the people no I didn't.

Eh, I wouldn't say so.

However there are certain things I won't do. For instance I won't use certain hebrew names for god, even though I don't believe in god, because of how I was raised.

Sounds like good luck, to me.

I wouldn't say I'm superstitious, but there are times when I wont say things in case of jinxing it. Specifically sports related example - shut out for goalies. I don't fully believe that saying it actually causes the loss of a shut out, but why risk it if it does? lol

I'll elaborate. I will wear clothes, without washing them, over and over again if I am hitting well with them on. Think underwear

accidentally epic thread is epic.

i have the usual sports superstitions, nothing in real life. i have to change jerseys if the devils are losing, gotta stop watching if the giants are losing, gotta wear the same jersey for a winning streak, i have to stand and pretend to save with brodeur when he's in the penalty shots. that's probably about it.

I never take the first item in a stack of anything in a store.

Mind you, given how things get pawed in stores, this is less a superstition and more practical, but it's become the closest thing to a superstition I have.  :lol

After working in a grocery story for about three years, I can tell you that's not superstitious at all; it's smart. I've seen everything from items being opened and...er...'sampled' to food being placed inside boxes/containers that weren't originally supposed to be in there; and all of them have been from the item that is closest to the front. Keep at it, it might save you some disgust and/or sickness.

Not at all, but my grandmother was extremely superstitious. She believed in the Evil Eye and was convinced that her neighbor gave it me when I was like 10. She rubbed holy oil on my forehead and said some prayer/chant in Greek. I always knew that it was bullshit but I never said anything. It was pretty freaky though. Most of her family believed/believes in that stuff. They didn't believe in stuff like walking under ladders or black cats at all though.
