Baltimore County School Shooting
« on: August 27, 2012, 02:34:51 PM »
Quote
August 27, 2012 (PERRY HALL, Md.) -- Authorities say a student who was shot and critically wounded on the first day of classes at a Baltimore County high school was shot at random.

Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said at a news conference Monday afternoon that officers believed that the shooter, who was also a student at Perry Hall High School, fired at random and struck the 17-year-old victim.

Johnson says the shooter took out a weapon he had hidden when teachers and a school resource officer immediately rushed him. Johnson said a second shot was fired. The shooter was quickly subdued.

A hospital spokeswoman says the teen who was shot is in critical condition.

Johnson says the shooter acted alone. Police found the weapon he used but would not say what it was.

For fuck's sake! Would it fucking kill the media to NOT report EVERY single shooting. I'm almost certain that the chance of being mentioned on the news is at least a small part of the "incentive" of doing these things for many of the shooters.

Yes, the main problem is our failure to identify and properly treat those with the propensity for doing these kinds of absurd things but if someone's already off the deep end, then seeing someone get some thoroughly undeserved notoriety for harming others is extremely likely to nudge them a little closer to deciding to go through with a shooting.

That is part of the problem indeed. Shootings happen everyday here in America and in other countries as well. If the media would focus on other things, shootings wouldn't be reported in the droves that they are. Shootings sadly seem to be the new reporting trend.

Sadly, the people that die in these tragedies, their deaths are politicized in the news

Shooting happens where I live but i'd say 99% of the times the shooter is trying to rob someone and/or is on crack. Every time I hear of a shooting in the US it's someone shooting at random. I think there is a big difference there.

This. If there's one thing I've taken from my psychology class it's that many people will kill just for fame, and these people especially.

Then they should let him lead rape the guy who shot him by giving him a fully automatic assault rifle and letting him disintegrate the original shooter's arms and legs so that all vital areas are left intact so the dude can die as slow and painful a death as possible.

Sorry to turn this political but for fucks sake USA... When will they finally admit that something is either wrong with society or with the gun laws.

I just searched and the last school shooting in this country was in 2004, and that was because there was a fight - 1 guy died, the only victim of school shootings ever in the Netherlands. Of course we have a lot less inhabitants but the amount of times (or similar incidents - Dark Knight premiere) this happens in the US is way off the charts.

Not to mention this comes only one day after some former Empire State Building worker shot and killed another worker because he was "disgruntled."

That's from the headline from NY Times, believe it or not. Yesterday's headline mind you, but I was looking at it with what I imagine your face is now.

All I can say is I'm glad that, with that Empire State Building case aside, these incidents tend to take place on the opposite end of the country from me. I and my girlfriend live in the only bastion of civilization in this crazy nation.

I live in Baltimore, County; Perry Hall is about 30 minutes from where I live and my wife is a teacher in the Baltimore County Public School system, though thankfully not at Perry Hall High. This is terrifying. I heard about it when it happened and was immediately texting my wife to make sure her school wasn't on some sort of lockdown (often if a major incident affects one school in the system they will exercise some sort of extra security measure just for the sake of student and teacher safety). Thankfully, all was well in her school.

This happened in Baltimore Maryland, which as far as google maps in concerned is very near to New York  ???

Baltimore is roughly 200 miles south of New York City, about 50 miles north of Washington, DC.

I know but SD said this happened on the opposite side of the country. I was just saying MD is not on the opposite side of NY

Opposite side of the country from him, so he obviously lives on the west coast.

On a related thought, it seems a lot of people are on the edge too because of unemployment and the political climate these days. I don't think the "if we don't win it will spell the end of the United States" helps exactly.

I had the first day of a geography class yesterday, and as my professor was going over the safety procedures, he mentioned that too many shootings were going on and that one would probably happen in the next year. I get home from class and hear about this...
