Interesting how JM saying that he loves the new album (which is a phrase that comes from pretty much every musician who has just finished creating a new album) is taken as a guaranty for the quality of it.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Mentlegen.

It's true. EVERYONE does it after they finish writing a song. It's impossible to avoid for me. XD But it'd be weird if whoever was writing didn't like it after writing seriously. Well maybe people who do it for money and make teh beats.

I thought the interview was a bit longer, but whatever. Still a nice read.  :)

I have some pending songs I love to listen to. If JM loves this album, then its gonna be the best since Awake.

Once I've written something and have let it sit for a bit (more than a couple of months), I sometimes have a hard time going back and listening to it, and I think I was writing seriously (music composition courses in college, and some stuff since then).

I found this JP quote interesting..
"You have to keep reminding yourself to go back to the inception. Back to that musical place before there were any fans, or a business, etc. That's where you will find inspiration and music in its purest form. If it doesn't come from that place, then people see right through it."

Perhaps a reaction to the supossed "metal"ness of the last two albums. Didn't JLB mention an imbalance in his interview?
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D

Not everyone. I've seen a few interviews with Richard Wright saying that Pink Floyd's best album was "Wish You Were Here" and that it's the only album he'll listen to for pleasure.

I also remember an interview with JP that I think was released shortly after SC came out where he said he likes the new album but SFAM was always his favorite and in his opinion DT's best work.

That, and the fact they are playing music from the movie before each show this summer makes me think JP watched Inception one too many times.  Maybe we'll get lyrics about a Dream Theater within a Dream Theater 4 layers deep?   ;D  That would definitely be A Dramatic Turn of Events.

Beneath the Surface is about how a dream can change people and basically implant ideas and thoughts. It fits the album's concept, maybe the song will also start with the inception music thing too. :metal

JM didn't say he loved the album. He said that he actually had been listening to the album every night before he goes to sleep, and that he doesn't seem to grow tired of it. That's a phat difference from being all like "Yeah, I really love this album! *moneyeyes*". And that says something, especially when coming from him.

Also, it's not weird to like to listen to one's own music. Seriously, why would you ever compose music you didn't like?

It wouldn't be weird for me listening to my own music but I'd be like Johnny Depp and not watch my movies.

Question - Have you written a piece of music or produced any piece of art before?

People have mentioned that movie too much lately.  I think I have to go watch it.

Also, cool interview, although obviously quite short.

I just watched it last night, a lot better than I expected it to be.  I realize I'm a little late to the bandwagon though, lol.  Anyways back on topic...

I got some emails on twitter and thru some DT related forums last week if I please would make a wallpaper of this picture of John Myung taken last week at Bospop here Holland. Okay, I was also intrigued by this pic, so here you go.

Sorry for the hijack, but I think everybody will be cool with this.  ;)

After writing , recording, mixing, and repeatedly performing an original song (or album) I'm usually at the point of being completely burned out on hearing it and have no desire to listen to it on my own time.  But none of my bands' shit has ever been as good as a Dream Theater album, so maybe if I made something that awesome I would want to hear it all the time, who knows.
