Compilation for an Old Soul
« on: February 10, 2011, 08:44:13 PM »
Hey I'm reaching out to the community to help me set up a 3 CD DT compilation for my cousin. He is the one that got me into listening to rock when all of my classmates were listening to children stuff - I was 7 in 1987 and purchased Appetite for Destruction thanks to him.

So my cousin is over 40. He grew up (and still does - to a certain extent) listening to Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, a little bit of Iron Maiden and such. He has however gotten a lot more mellow with the years.

He knows that I'm into DT (been a fan since 96) and has never gotten to really sit and listen to it. We live in different continents (he's in South America , I'm in the US), so I can't put him through a session with me.

I don't wanna drag here.

I want to send him a good compilation on CDs (so he can play in his car). The only limitation is that he doesn't like when things get too heavy ( he calls it turning the chainsaw ON).  So songs like Panic Attack are off limits -- for now.

I want to let him know that the community helped on this one.

The ones that I will add on my behalf are Octavarium, The Count of Tuscany and A mind beside itself.

Other than that I'm open to suggestions!!

I love Blind Faith... specially that guitar riff after the solo (5:43).

-Metropolis Pt.1
-The Spirit Carries On
-A Change of Seasons (if some of those riffs aint too heavy for him)
-Innocence Faded

I'd put those on if it's a guy who appreciate progressive music without chainsaw.

Strange Deja Vu also isn't a bad idea. That was the first DT song I truly loved.

Avoiding the big chainsaws...

Pull Me Under
Another Day
Surrounded
Learning To Live
Voices
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Space-Dye Vest
A Change of Seasons
Lines in the Sand
Trial of Tears
Fatal Tragedy
Through Her Eyes
Home
The Spirit Carries On
About To Crash
Goodnight Kiss
I Walk Beside You
Octavarium
Wither
The Count of Tuscany

Got to be at least 3 discs in there, most of the proggy rock and melodic stuff and not any metal/heavy stuff, but you may get that reaction to some of these. Also I tried to keep the songs to "classic DT" sounding songs that epitomize what the band does (so that if/when your friend looks at other stuff than this, he should like most of it).

Thanks all so far! I appreciate the input.

LTL will be there for sure.

And though I would love to be broad with not just epics, I can't leave ToTears and HK/LiTS out.

I agree with all of you who opted for some of the short songs/ballads (ie wither), it will need balance but I too want to showcase what DT really is - which is pretty hard to do, if you leave the heavier stuff out.

What do y'all think of including something from the closet.

Speak to me?

Don't look past me?

To live forever?

Cover My Eyes!

Or, yes, Don't Look Past Me is also an excellent choice.

I thought Overture 1928 but if I include it I would like to take it all the way through fatal tragedy.

Innocence Faded is a song I love, and definitely will make it.

I also like WFS--> LTL

As I said in my opening post--- Octavarium WILL be there.

Thanks all for the input...

It's good to get fresh ideas (I wouldn't have added These Walls, Surrounded, Wither, Blind Faith or even SDV had I done it on my own).

This is the compilation -
(btw it killed me to leave Train of Thought aside)

Octavarium
Count of Tuscany
A Mind Beside Itself
Blind Faith

The Spirit Carries On
Don’t look past me
Wait For Sleep
Learning to Live
Hell’s Kitchen
Lines in the Sand
Lifting Shadows of a Dream
Goodnight Kiss
Solitary Shell
The Ministry of Lost Souls

Speak to Me
Overture 1928
Surrounded
Innocence Faded
About to Crash
Trial of Tears
Wither
These walls
Take Away my Pain
The Best Of Times
Space-Dye Vest

Decide to go with Solitary Shell as many recommended to include Goodnight Kiss… it kinda made sense to follow it with SS).

Added TMOLS, even though it gets a lot of hate in the forums… I dig it and its both melodic and showcases what DT is doing lately.

Added TBOT because of the brutal solo, basically.

Finally decided leaving Strange Déjà vu aside – just the overture.

Any opinions and suggestions are more than welcome… I won’t send this until Monday probably.

I thought about both vacant and disappear.  The latter I love.  However I didn't want it to be just ballad after ballad.

About Metropolis pt 1 and ACOS ( part of my "holy trinity") I thought I either add a 4 th bonus CD with just these two or wait to see if he digs DT.

I ve found throughout the last 15 years of my life that DT easily impresses a lot of people, but it takes a much bigger step for them to actually get into them. It helps if they play an instrument.  For th average Joe it's  a much harder task.

Since my cousin grew up listening to Prog it may be easier and I'm sure he'll appreciate the musicianship and virtuosism. I'm just hoping that he can take that next step and ask me "ok so which album should I purchase first?"

My first post ever on the forums...been lurking since MP left. I would suggest Eve. It's a beautiful, expressive piece of music that brings across sadness and hope at the same time.  I have listened to it on repeat for entire days before without getting sick of it.
