The Gavin Harrison Appreciation Thread
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:48:14 AM »
So there's no Gavin Harrison thread, which is a travesty because he's pretty much the greatest drummer ever. I've been checking out his first album with 05Ric lately, it's ridiculously awesome, I'd highly recommend it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEbAlC9F9fw

However, what prompted me to make this thread was his drumming at the end of 'Get All You Deserve' off Insurgentes. The really weird override beat on the crash adds a whole other layer to an otherwise normal pattern  :hefdaddy

In conclusion, APPRECIATE NAO

Haven't heard much of his work, but he is definitely up there among my favorite drummers. I like how he seems so relaxed while playing those sick beats, unlike say, Neil Peart who looks a bit awkward (not saying he's bad). By the way the video was amazing. :tup

Gavin Harrison is tremendous.  At times, I feel like his style takes over the whole Porcupine Tree sound.

One of the few drummers with a style that's instantly recognizable.

Yeah, Neal Peart is the only other one I've really found.

Yeah Gavin is a terrific drummer. Being primarily from the jazz scene he has amazing chops, but also he has refreshing take on progressive rock/metal drumming which has become a bit too predictable recently. In particular his work on OSI - Blood stands out. AFAIK they just gave him the master tracks and he recorded it on the kit at his house. I guess that's why the drumming sounds so natural and unforced. PT are very lucky to have him.
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Not in the same way. Anything Gavin's playing on, it's an instant trigger that it's him. Same with Neal Peart. I've never found anybody else like that. Granted, I don't pay attention to drums very much.

My favorite drummer with Thomas Lang a second.

Just unbelievable chops with a great sound and absolutely wonderful dynamic control.

Who here has heard his solo album, "Sanity & Gravity"?

Bill Bruford fits that criteria for me, as well.  Not coincidentally, Bruford, Harrison and Peart are my three favorite drummers.

Harrison is great, but it seems like, live, when he does a fill, he plays until the last possible microsecond before he lauches back into the main groove, like he's a bit rushed.  Doesn't stop PT from being amazing live.  And I agree with what someone said about his fresh take on prog/metal drumming, especially considering his jazz chops and that he doesn't really listen to prog.

I really enjoy hearing him play and listening to his interviews. I didn't know that he will be 48 years old next year

Bruford is the probably first drummer I think of when I think 'instantly recognizable'.

Fantastic drummer, whether with PT or other side projects.

Both his albums with O5ric could not be more highly recommended.
