just discovered Opeth
« on: December 26, 2015, 12:56:18 PM »
So i just discovered opeth, mainly bc i heard about them so much in this forum.

I started chronologically and heard orchid and morningrise.

It took some time but im getting used to their unique style. every song sounds like 3 different songs and has so many changes on tempo and riffs. the slow and quiet moments are so beautiful coming after the heavy parts.

Its magical but sometimes also tiring because its hard to distinguish between the songs,  some of them are very similar but again, after more and more spins it becomes clearer and i learn to appreciate them more.

Does it changes later on in the next albums? does it gets better?

I wanna mention The twilight is my robe. such a great song. also the acoustic middle part in the night and the silent water.

Still Life, Blackwater Park, and Ghost Reveries seem to be the three that get the most acclaim around here. Personally I really love Ghost Reveries but have never been too huge on their other stuff, I may have to revisit their older ones at some point.

the song-writing gets better imo.  The transitions between the heavy and lighter passages become magical and not quite so jarring.  IMO, My Arms Your Hearse is where they starting really perfecting their sound/style.  The 7 album run from MAYH to Watershed is one of the best string of albums you'll find by any band.  Heritage was a bit of a dip and a fairly huge departure in style for them, but they came back with Pale Communion in a very similar style as Heritage but much more focused and it was one of my top albums from 2014.
Winger would be better!

My Arms, Your Hearse is where it's at. Blackwater Park is by far and away the most praised album, and rightfully so, it's an amazing epic. But MA,YH will always be my favorite. Be ready for a completely upside down stylistic change with Heritage and Pale Communion. Zero growls, very mellow on Heritage's part and even with Pale Communion the metal aspects are toned down to be more quiet and emotional than in your face and bro0tal. I love them but there are fans that have left the band's fanbase because of it, that's how drastic a change it is. So just a heads up on that one. Other than that, good to know there's another fan! Enjoy them! They're all amazing in their own right, I think. I don't dislike a single album they've put out and they're one of my favorites.

I’ll be frank. I’ve been into Opeth since BWP came out. I listened to some stuff from the albums before My Arms, Your Hearse once or twice and found it so inferior to their later stuff, it just wasn’t worth the time.

Unless you’re an oddball who prefers their early style, it gets so, so much better.

The songwriting and transitions get much, much better.

Still, they have yet to top TBYF in the ballad department.

I think you'll find the evolution very interesting at least.

Definitely solid, and a hugely underrated highlight on GR for sure!

Still, I wouldn't even put it beside TBYF. Its only contender is probably AFJ.

What do we even count as an Opeth ballad, anyway? Stuff they played on the Damnation summer tour setlists? Where's the dividing line? No growls and slow tempo? It's so fluid in Opeth.

Still one of my favorite bands for sure. I did give Orchid and Morningrise a fair amount of spins when I was getting into the band, but I never listen to them anymore. From MAYH onward is all gold for me.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Same. Given the way they were constructed, you could probably make a medley of the good parts of each album and it'd run about 25 minutes each. I tried that a few times, actually  :lol

Though I quite like the whole of Forest of October, The Apostle in Triumph (track splitting screwup included – the opening part that fades out is supposed to be the end of Requiem!), Advent, BRI and TBYF.

Nectar...

NAh, I would suggest Blackwater Park, ITs just that good. MAYH is a good start too...

I seem to be in the minority, but I probably prefer the first 2 albums to the 3rd and 4th. My top 3 are Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park and Deliverance.

I haven't listened to either of the first two albums or the two most recent since August. I love the remaining seven albums, though; I listen to each at least once every few weeks, and more often in the case of my two favorites, Watershed and MAYH. I cannot think of a single other band with a seven album run comparable to this one.
Only a prog fan would try to measure how much they enjoy a song by an equation. :lol

I'm not very fond of the older albums.  But I love most of the stuff they've released since "My Arms, Your Hearse"

If I had to rank the albums it would go something like this:

Watershed
Ghost Reveries
Blackwater Park
Still Life
Deliverance
Pale Communion
Damnation
My Arms, Your Hearse
Morningrise
Orchid
Heritage

Ghost Reveries is still my favorite album of all time, of any genre. It's my desert island album.
