Stock Sounds
« on: June 07, 2014, 10:24:06 PM »
So, obviously DT uses a lot of cliche stock sounds in their songs, particularly in Metropolis Part 2.
For example, I've heard the exact female gasp (erroneously attributed to Julian on the Metropolis 2000 video clip) used in South Park. Victoria's scream is basically the female Wilhelm scream, with the first vocalization repeated at the end for extension.
So I guess this thread should be for general discussion of the stock sounds, but out of curiosity, does anyone know where they get these sounds? I doubt they're part of Warner's private library if Wu Tang Clan is using one of them.

Dat thunda clap
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I was so disappointed when I noticed my thunder clap that comes with Garage Band as a loop sounded familiar..  :-[

Shame, because most of the keyboard sounds sound quite original and distinctive.

At least it's a genuine sounding thunder sound. My keyboard makes terrible sounding thunder noises..

In  Queensryche's Mindcrime at the beginning "Dr. Blair Dr. Blair, Dr. J Hamilton Dr. J Hamilton".  Heard that many times in other media, always wondered who did it first.

It is just a general sound library.  I think Mike Portnoy said, maybe in the DVD commentary.  I have heard that scream so many goddamn times.  I should have kept a list.  Funny thing is, the places I have heard the sound being used are every from moderately budgeted films to big budget films.  So why use a free sound?

It's a friggin' thunder. It's not like they need to make an extensive search for sounds when you have them at hand. Why would that disappoint someone?

What blew my mind was when I heard a Radiohead song (I think?) and it had the same extended sound effect from Finally Free, with the car door closing, and the footsteps going up to the house and everything. It was weird.

Heard the Victoria scream from Finally Free in an episode of Tosh.0 (where he spoofed The Matrix).  Did a triple take on that one.  Didn't realize that was a sample at the time, and thought Tosh sampled DT  :lol

Since then I've noticed it in a several places, but none I can still remember.

I remember hearing the "Finally Free" Victoria scream in an episode of NBC's Heroes during their first season. I was like "Wait...was that...yeah...it totally was!"  :rollin

The Victoria scream at the end of scenes is hideous, sounds awful and kind of takes away from the song..

That's not  thunder Grizz -- its a badass sound effect that represents the wasteland -- and it works.  Love that part of the song.

No, I'm pretty sure it's storm sounds for the rain motif.

The Victoria scream is in The Butterfly Effect too.

Which is stupid because a little girl is supposed to be screaming if I'm remembering correctly.

"Who wants four? Who wants the hard four"  is heard in the bridge of 'Home'. It's a male Craps dealer saying it. Sounds kinda weird. Sounds kinda like "Who wants more? Who wants the hardcore?"

Well anyway,  that can be heard on the casino floor in this old computer game I used to play. I think it was Hoyle Casino 2003.

Well yeah, I heard more and hardcore because of the female orgasm happening in my other ear.

Motley Crue used the same sample at the beginning of Dr Feelgood's intro. Lazy, as its not a big jump to assume a QR fan might listen to the Crue.

Not a stock sound, but I was like  when I first heard Chuck D say "Come On!" in the Take The Time intro.
"I don't know nuttin about nuttin" - Marshawn Lynch

The very soul of what was once real music is now lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.

I was watching TV just now, and an ad came on with a very familiar stock sound effect. Luckily, I found it on Youtube.

The footsteps at the beginning of The Root of All Evil are also in the old Thief games. Boy, that game had great sound effects for its time.

Talking about stock sounds and video games, the one I hear the most is the opening/closing door from the earlier Hitman games, I probably heard that effect in a couple of dozen movies.

Sycsa is perhaps the most brilliant and insightful man I have ever encountered.
