World War Z
« on: July 04, 2013, 06:41:52 AM »
Tried to search for a thread on this but wasn't allowed to search "z"...

Saw this last night. i'd say it was a 2.5-3/5 movie. not terrible but not great.

I thought it improved as it went on but the first few scenes were terribly shaky.

I liked the final act in the Research Facility.

I thought the movie was terrible, and I hated the end with the research facility. Let me play Russian roulette with 100 deadly diseases... few, I picked the right one. I've been spoiled by The Walking Dead.

To be fair, they never said there was a single "right one", just that the vials from one of the racks would kill him.

As a standalone movie, it was enjoyable. As an adaptation, it was immensely disappointing.

I enjoyed it... Never read the book, and it is admittedly forgetable, but I still enjoyed it

Haven't seen the film yet, but I read the book, and it seemed to me unfilmable as is.  I would think that major changes would have needed to be made.

Also, not sure why every new movie needs its own thread.  I thought that's why we have the Movie Thread.

I don't mind separate threads for current box office hits. Look at the Avengers, Prometheus, and Avatar threads. It would have been impossible to discuss them if they were in the Movie Thread.

There's not an Avengers thread, there is a Marvel Movie Universe thread, so I see that as being almost like the Star Wars or Star Trek threads - there's a lot going on, and all of the discussion is interrelated.

To be fair, much of the Avatar thread was you singing its praises, and other people making comments about your taste in films.  Plus it wound up being one of the biggest money makers of all time.

I have no explanation for the Prometheus thread.

Book was great. The movie was terrible. I didn't know how'd they make it to a movie but it ended up being about 3% similar. The book had nothing to do about finding a cure. I thought they could add in some of the scenes like Yonkers and the fight back in Arizona. Nothing. Absolutely terrible.

I loved the movie. The book, on the other hand, was incredibly ponderous to me. I simply could not get into it, though I intend to try again at some point.  Most people that didn't like the movie, from what I've seen, have issues because of the book.  I know that the movie is quite different from the book and that they share very few similarities, but I just thought it was intense and very entertaining.

Walking Dead definitely sets the bar high, but I thought it was fun.  Strange to have a zombie movie with no gore, but for me, it worked.

It was the direction and camerawork that really irked me.

The scene in the stairwell with the flare was incomprehensible. You just had to guess what was happening.

No surprise it was from the same director as Quantum Of Solace.

That bugged the hell out of me. Next thing you know the kid is running out with the wife and his parents were no where to be found. I would have liked to have seen the kid ripped away from his parents as they were attacked (or something more dramatic than what we saw). That little Spanish kid was a complete waste. What was the point of him being in the movie anyway?

Personally, I loved the movie. Haven't read the book though. I loved the ending.

I don't know they can look at the dailies or the rushes or whatever you call them and go " yep that looks fine. just a load of red light and the occasional face and shaking the camera all over. "

It was irritating because some shots were really great like when the helicopter did that hard bank by the wall in Jerusalem with all the zombies piling up it.

QoS had the same problems - fast action was just a close up mess. That's why i love James Cameron so much - he pulls back and actually shows you what's going on rather than zooming right in and shaking the camera like crazy.

I agree about the camera, though it happens so frequently in movies these days that I'm almost desensitized to it. I also loved the helicopter scene with the wall. Beautiful shot.

I know that this movie had massive issues for quite some time. I read the whole ending had to be rewritten. That might explain the boy a bit and his lack of purpose. Perhaps he had more scenes but they were cut to tighten up the story.

I always hear complaints about Marc Forster's camerawork, and I just don't understand them. I had no trouble following the action in WWZ or QOS.
