MythBusters is not a 'science show' and the fact that the president of our country goes on that show to promote science shows how very bad this nations science and technological interest has become.

Why not  attend a lecture by one of our nations preeminent scientists? Or perhaps join a debate on NPR? Or appear on NOVA.... sigh...

Because no one in the country gives a shit about those.

Because as president I assume he'd rather be seen by 95% of the country and looked down up by 5%, than looked kingly upon by 5% and ignored by 95%.

Yeah, sadly I guess they're as close as we have to Bill Nye, and the much better Mr. Wizard.  Still, the experiment that he's involved with actually has many scientific aspects.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

In the photo in the link, you would think these guys might dress up a little when visiting the White House. Instead, the one guy shows up with the stupid hat looking all the more like he wants to play bass for the Doobie Brothers.  :\

Seeing as how the beret is 'his thing', I assume it was an intentional part of the photo-op.

Why the hell does anybody think the President is capable of turning people on to science? I can think of, oh, I don't know, a million other things that would get the public more interested in science - like cheerleaders.

I totally agree actually, WW. It's gonna be a nice photo-op for Obama to appease the geek base, but it's simply not going to turn people to science. Because frankly, Mythbuster isn't about science. To this day they have to get past "lol, math! " in their episodes.

Science is best infected on the youth by what they watch and follow, so mythbusters is the most popular form of 'scientific' showing today. i know of no high schooler or younger who follows the nova religiously. no need to bash the means to inspiring the youth, as long as they are inspired.

I thought it was a cool show early on, especially since I saw my younger brother and his would-be gangster friends engaged in something mildly scientific. But I think it's warped into something designed mostly to entertain. That's a characteristic I've seen adopted by many science outlets - it's an attempt to dumb down the content to appease a wider audience. And it never works in the long run.

I remember reading that Adam Savage's dream was to have an episode that "busted" Evolution. Problem is, at this stage their intellectual level has dropped so far that they could never do a good job at designing an experiment that would actually showcase its workings.

I'd much rather them do a faith healing experiment. That's more Bullshit! territory though.
