General Music Discussion / Re: Rush v. Dirk, Pratt, & Lerxst

That Thing You Do (which I randomly saw within the last year for the first time since it was released and was reminded that it's REALLY good).

This takes the thread into a different place, but how that film played out raises a good question about songwriting.  Within the context of the story, the song That Thing You Do was written by Jimmy and Lenny, but it was written as a slower ballad.  It only became a fast song when Guy played it "too fast" at that talent show, and obviously it became their big hit at Guy's tempo.  Would Guy get a songwriting credit for that since his tempo change technically altered the arrangement?
I think so.  Tempo is a more major musical element than just drum pattern.

Depends.  If it's Ozzy or Kiss, no.  If it's Van Halen or Sabbath, maybe.

What if this was all "part of the plan"?

We know MP is a huge fan of music history and lore.  MP is the archivist-setlist-bootleg-fanservice guy in the extreme.
You're right that MP knows his music history. In fact, he even cited a whole bunch of examples as reasons to encourage the rest of the band to go along with his suggestion of taking a hiatus, and that they would return bigger and better than ever as a result.

But no. There's absolutely no way this was scripted. I had fairly regular contact with him in the years following the split and there's no way that this was all just for show based on our communication and from what I heard from others.

Someone made a side by side compilation of the real life events that inspired GTA VI in the trailer, it's uncanny.

Finally got around to watching Nightmare Before Christmas a few weeks ago, a short 30 years after it came out.

What did you think?

Dream Theater / Re: JLB - "I can't sing like that anymore"

One thing I'm curious about is those cameo videos (and apologies if those have been dissected here previously).

It seems like the pitchiness isn't a problem in those (at the expense of a more "rubato" tempo, which is a perk of singing alone). Are James' bad habits perceptible in those?

As a non-expert, it feels like a bit of a night and day contrast between those videos where he hits the notes in his living room and live recordings of the most problematic moments (where not only is pitch an issue, but at some points his voice feels "weak", which I really don't know whether it's just a vocal issue or a live mixing issue, with EQ/compression either being applied poorly or not at all for his voice to properly "face" the rest of the [much louder] instruments).

Agree ADKOT was surprisingly good particularly after first single Tattoo which turned out okay as an album cut but yeah...

Why though is it not available on streaming services?

Wolfie talked about that; I think it's a combination of things, but ultimately falls down to Alex and Dave not seeing eye-to-eye and not LOVING the record in hindsight.   That's what I took from the discussion.
