ITT we post stories about our usernames.
I came up with BirchBoy (originally Birch Boy) years ago when I was at a friend's house playing Halo 2. We were making characters and I had to think of a name, and I think I was thinking of either birch beer or a birch tree/wood (we might've been drinking birch beer), so I named my elite Birch Boy. That's also my gamertag (except someone somehow already had it, forcing me to make it B1RCH BOY). Apparently it's also the name of a Canadian syrup brand.

Mine's easy. Rina = my name.

Date I first saw DT. 7/31/09 But I think most of you guys knew that.

oh, cool... I figured it was your zip code. :)
mine is hebrew for joshua and the 4 was added because when I first signed up for email (back in the Juno days) the name was already used as was 1, 2 and 3.
-
The first forum I checked out, Yesfans, all ready had the name I wanted, Your Move(a Yes song), so in a pinch I just put in lonesoul. I quickly realized that was stupid, and it led to lonestar. Once I found my original avatar, I kinda grew into it. I'm not actually a spaceballs freak, though I do enjoy the movie. Sorry guys.
-
Old nickname from elementary school, I've used it as a screen name since I was like 10.

At least we won't forget ours, right? :P

A parasite that attatched itself to my name, and I can't get rid of it.

Portmanteaus kick ass. So, I figured a portmanteau about being the ultimate metal head would be double the kick ass.
And thus, the UMH was born.
-
I just needed a user name and I found a cool Space Invaders avatar. It made sense.
It doesn't now that I have the avatar I have now, but meh, it works.
-
I let my hamster do some keyboard crawling and this was the result.

When I was in third grade I got a computer and was playing netmech on the zone. I just took Reaper and KK is my initial = Karolis K.
-
PlaysLikeMyung is my Native American name, along the same lines as DancesWithWolves and PlaysWithHimself :neverusethis:
-
Short for your "eminence is dead".
-
Just a random thing from middle school. We figured a skydiving ninja would be a pretty badass, frightening thing to deal with, so I started using it as a screen name and I haven't really felt like changing it ever.
-
real complicated on this one W= First Initial KIML= first 4 letters of my surname
I know, I know, the originality is mind boggling
-
I let my hamster do some keyboard crawling and this was the result.
This is the best!!!!
My name stems from a story Alex Lifeson told by Neil Peart in the Power Windows tourbook. He was King Lerxst, King of Shmegland. So he declared that monday's was a day off from recording and named it Big Al day(For the Producer of the album). So I wanted to use this as my Email so I tried Lerxst, KinkLersxt ect.. Until I came up with Kingshmegland.
This is the link. https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/tourbook-powerwindows.php

I saw this name in an old video game (Phantasy Star IV) and thought it was cool so I started using it as a username everywhere.
-
Derivative of my website - nothing earth shattering here.
-
I took the Silmarillion, looked in the back at the elvish name-sections, and made faemir.
That was after making moredhel, only to find it was the name of the main character in some book :yeahright
-

When I saw this thread title I was hoping you would respond because I was trying to figure out what yours meant.
Mine is simply the same IM handle I've used since 2003. dreamtheater (obvious) and vt = Virginia Tech.
I got sick of using my high school nickname for my handle, especially since I had to start explaining it, so when I got accepted to VT for grad school, I decided I needed a new online persona.

Besides your avatar ;D

Long story. I've told it before, but there doesn't appear to be a version from after the crash. Before re-typing it, I'll see if Cozmo just has it saved somewhere. And, no, it does not have anything whatsoever to do with Star Wars. (although, really, if it was from Star Wars, that would somehow be less geeky than the real story)

XianL
X can be construed as a symbol for "Christ", and my name is Christian. "Christ"+ian = Xian. So if you ever have troubles pronouncing it, just think "Christian" (I'm looking at you, Nick :P)
And L is the first letter of my last name :tup

Oh, really? I always thought it was Chinese, which is why I usually refer to you as Jan Lee (over Anglicized pronounciation of the pinyin version). Heh. The more you know...

I'm sure you know, but X'ian actually is a Chinese city (which gave my good friend's Chinese girlfriend a good dose of mirth).
In retrospect, I probably should have chosen a screen name that has a more common pronunciation consensus :P
-
How exactly do you pronounce it? When TDoL talk, we both pernounce it as Zian-al.

Damn it Xian. Make your name less complicated.

Zz-eye-ann-el.
Like "Zion" from The Matrix, with a vowel replaced.

It's really funny, at some point over the Christmas break I think I was in the shower or something when I had a mind-melting epiphany and figured out what your name meant. Man, was I ever proud of myself. :lolpalm:
I originally chose the name "Global Laziness" when I joined the Megadeth Forums back in late 2005 or early 2006. I chose it simply because it was the name of a song I was really digging at the time by an indie-punk band from Quebec called MAP.
When I came to these forums, I signed up as "cgyflames89" (which I generally use for emails and such) because for some reason I thought that that was a sign-in name and not a screen name. I used that account mostly to hover (I only posted four times) and eventually created this account ("Global Laziness") when I wanted to start posting more frequently.

Mine's a combination of BLACKwater Park by Opeth and Pink FLOYD. I like the Floyd quite well but fucking loved 'em at the time I created this name. As for Opeth, I was already writing music vaguely similar to theirs with the whole acoustic-mixed-with-heavy/groove-riffs approach and after hearing Demon of the fall as my first exposure to them I couldn't stop listening to them and eventually Blackwater Park was the album of theirs I just couldn't put down.
Six years later I still can't find a band to replace them as my fave.

Volk = "Wolf" in Russian. Wolves are my absolute favorite animals, so it seemed natural (Plus their the name of the gang in Crackdown :metal)

As a kid I wanted to make an email address. My parents suggested I take a name of something I like and stick some elfish suffix on it. I went with Geno from Super Mario RPG and -wyn. Ta-da.
Apparently Genowyn is actually the name of some mythological or literary figure, because I've had a few people ask me about that, but note that most of the google results on the name are me. (don't search, since a lot of them seem to be forums I posted like 2 times on)

If you're a Metallica fan, you should know.

I made a joke, somebody one-upped me, and I made another joke saying that my name should be Super Mario. Hefdaddy (I think) took it from there.
-
Figure it out.
lol
Mine has its origin from a friend reformatting my computer in 2005 and making my username for my account "James the Jamesman." I don't know how, but all of my friends started calling me "Jamesman," and it stuck. Yeah, people call me Jamesman IRL.
-

Why the hell have I not noticed your avatar by now, Lee? I was gone from this place for the last 9 months and your name was already changed to the current one when I got here. I can never forget you since you were the first person to ever sig one of my quotes.
-
Yeah, I guess I'm pretty awesome.
-
I played drums in a two-piece band called Sneaky Blueberries.
-
I like Opeth, and I'm unoriginal, so I swiped a cool name of an amazing song from their discography that reflects my interest in atmospheric music.

Despite Dream Theater being in my life as long as I can remember, I didn't really get into them until Systematic Chaos. The line the caught my attention the most was the "Dark Master..." part. I'm not sure why it stuck out, but I wasn't really paying attention to it when my dad played it in the car on a road trip, as I was reading. Suddenly I heard that line and my attention was grabbed. I made him replay the entire CD so I could actually listen to it. Thus, my love of Dream Theater was born, and my name was created. (NO, ITPOE is not my favorite song, just the song that got me into DT)

Apologies for the hamster story on the first page but it was, alas, a lie.
C = See
thru = Through

See Through Boy
I'm quite pale.

One of my lifelong loves has been playing guitar. There really is nothing in the world like it and if I could make a living doing nothing but playing my guitar, I damn sure would. So there's the "Guitar" part of it.
The "Cozmo" part has a story: July 4, 1997. My Kiss tribute band, Cold Gin was playing a gig at the Brokedown Palace in Washburn, WI. We're sitting in the upstairs apartment, overlooking Chequamegon Bay (a small inlet of Lake Superior), putting on our makeup for the show. Now the bass player, who'd formed the band many years prior had the same name as me. Since he'd been in the band longer, it was decided that I needed a nickname to cut down on confusion.
They liked to razz me about the fact that I was always a little bit of a nerd, so they suggested Newman (a la Alfred E. Newman). Then they all said "Nah, people will confuse that for Newman from Seinfeld". Coincidentally, at the time, I'd dyed my hair black to blend in with the Ace Frehley wig I wore for gigs. I'd also started growing it out, so it was constantly unruly and difficult to manage. Given the "Nah, they'll think Newman from Seinfeld" idea and my black, unruly hair, our singer mentioned about how my hair looked like Kramer's. Kramer's first name is Cozmo. Voila.
-
I took mine from a character in Heroes Of Might And Magic III. I've been using it here and there since my first days on the web (1999).
-
I'm usually "Teh GIR" on forums and such, but I did LTE just as simple acronym to Liquid Tension Experiment.

Mine is the way the locals would pronounce the last name of Boston's first baseman at the time I joined the forums. It's also how people would sometimes pronounce my surname, despite the spelling difference.

I had a lame username on a site and wanted to change, but I had no idea about what I would use. I thought about it for like two weeks and at one point it struck me, just as a nice combination of words; Logical Nightmare. At first it didn't seem appealing, but I grew to like it and after a while it was the only thing I could imagine having as a username.
Best part: LogicalNightmare is 16 letters, and the beforementioned site only allows 15. I ended up spelling it LogicalNitemare, which is still my name on last.fm och probably somewhere else, then I changed the username to MissHeroin (from the SoaD-song). I use Logical Nightmare and Miss Heroin about equally.
-
Shortened form of Xavier James Denton, which is the pseudonym I use on most sites.
Xavier = from X-men
James = My actual middle name
Denton = from Deus Ex

I dunno, mizzl looks like Mitch, my name, and it's nice and short.

I always loved how Alex leader of the Droogs (A Clockwork Orange) always referred to one of my favorite composers as "the great Ludwig Van". The pomposity of it suits my prog-snob tendencies :p

I actually have no idea where I got this username, but I am 100% sure that I've been using it since before the Pokemon, Arceus.
It's probably Latin or something I discovered whilst sniffing glue.

Kinda similar to mine. My friend Dave (no, TAC, not Meniketti) sort of came up with the initial iteration back in high school. We both were into arcade games. The more stuff you had to shoot/blow up/etc., the better the game. Dave observed that the name of one space shoot-em-up game, Boskonians, was kinda neat, and that you could kinda play around with it. So taking BOSKONE, you could kinda break up the letters to get 13051 < ONE. ("13" = "B"; "5" = "S"; "1<" = "K") Mathematically, this is not true because 13051 is not less than one. BUT, you can kind of flip it on its head metaphysically. The idea was basically along the lines of the romantic ideal that one who has known love is greater than the untold masses who have not. Thus, 13,051 representing the masses who have never known love are < the one who has. 13051<ONE is thus a paradox, and "BOSKONE" thus becomes the "cool secret password" for a couple of high school boys with nothing better to do than come up with such things.
It's just one of those things that stuck through the years, and I began using shortened versions of it. Way back when common use of the Internet and email and such was still relatively new, I had to choose a username for my AOL account. Usernames had to be lowercase and had to have some numbers as well as letters. The obvious choice was the shortened form, "bosk1." I've used it in that form ever since. So both the lack of capitalization and the 1 at the end are officially part of the name, and the one isn't on there just because I knew everyone would want "bosk" as their username and put the 1 on just to show I was first.
Anyway, as I said, kinda dorky, but there you have it.
-
My user name has a double meaning. I joined the forum shortly after the release of SC, so I was listening to it a lot! I also use my name to describe to human condition from my point of view. The alt-caps effect is meant to represent the rollercoaster of life. I guess it could've been Systematic Motion, but CC just seems to work better.

Zelda Bomber
Zelda the video game, and the Bombers were a group in Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I made it when I joined a Zelda message board back in 2000, and it just kind of stuck. I like it.

Where does the umlaut over the "o" come from?
Basically, the story behind my username is that I stole it from a friend in middle school because I thought it was cool and have used it ever since.

A telemarketer talked me into three years of Stereo Review magazine, but he managed to swap the first two letters of my name when he typed in the information, so I got three years of magazines addressed to Orbert instead of Robert. Orbert is the name I always use on forums or other online stuff.

Thanks. I think of jazz rather than metal, since there's a jazz trumpeter from Chicago named Orbert Davis and I live in Chicago (the burbs actually). But metal is cool, too.

A telemarketer talked me into three years of Stereo Review magazine, but he managed to swap the first two letters of my name when he typed in the information, so I got three years of magazines addressed to Orbert instead of Robert. Orbert is the name I always use on forums or other online stuff.
I had a similar situation where the Scottish Qualifications Authority sent me a letter address to "Harru" and one of my friends now calls me by that name to this day :yeahright

Ulauts make everything more metal. Ask Queensryche and Motley Crue.
I remember that conversation. Good stuff.

Basically, the story behind my username is that I stole it from a friend in middle school because I thought it was cool and have used it ever since.
For some reason, I'd always assumed that your username was a Redwall reference.
And...now that I think about it, that was a pretty dumb assumption.
-
Back when I was really into Star Wars (I still am, but I used to be REALLY into it) I played a lot of Star Wars games that let you create a custom character (like KOTOR and stuff). I decided that I would just create an identity for all video games that I would use (except for Rock Band and Guitar Hero, where my name is always The Impregnator). So Setra Taeso became my Jedi name.

Truth be told, Redwall was one of my favorite series. Gotta love those Dibbuns! Not a dumb assumption -- I give you permission to call me Slagar ;D

Interesting. The only force-immune beasts I remember were from KotOR (their name escapes me). Are we talking pre-Phantom Menance, or post-Return of the Jedi?
-
post return of he jedi. it is one o he most aseome seiriws ever.
-
WAIT. It deals with Luke/Hans's children?
I remember. Awesome series, indeed.

Yeah, I've put off reading it for a while.
I'm still reading a bunch of standalone novels.
But the post-Return of the Jedi books are apparently really intense.
-
I can't give an accurate asswssment, as it's been easily 5 years since I read them all. My mindset and judgement of the quality of novels was quite different at that age.

My girlfriend is really good mates with the guitarist from Motorhead's son.

Odd wording but I get what you're saying.
Anyway, to continue,

RESTLESS MIND
KILLING TIME
BOUTS OF FEAR
PERMEATE
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN
HEIGHTENING
NERVOUSNESS

CAUGHT OFF GUARD
WARNING SIGNS
BURIED ALIVE
TENSION STRIKES
CHOKING ME
ONE SHORT LIFE
WHY DO I FELL SO NUMB
IS IT SOMETHING TO DO WITH MOTORHEAD
SHOULD THIS BE FIGHT OR FLIGHT
I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M CONSTANTLY KILLED BY DEATH
RAPID HEARTBEAT POUNDING THROUGH MY CHEST
THE CHASE IS BETTER THAN THE CATCH
I FEEL LIKE I'M IN DANGER
ON YOUR FEET OR ON YOUR KNEES
A STIFLING SURGE
SHOOTING THROUGH ACE OF SPADES
EXTREME APPREHENSION
DANCING ON YOUR GRAVE
LOST ALL HOPE FOR REDEMPTION
GRAVE SITUATION PLEASE DON'T TOUCH
WHY DO I FELL SO NUMB
IS IT SOMETHING TO DO WITH MOTORHEAD
SHOULD THIS BE FIGHT OR FLIGHT
I DON'T KNOW WHY I'M CONSTANTLY KILLED BY DEATH
HELPLESS HYSTERIA
A FALSE SENSE OF MARCH OR DIE
TRAPPED IN MY PHOBIA
POSSESSED BY OVERKILL

TIME IS RIGHT
OVERWHELMED BY THIS COMPLEX LINE IN THE SAND

I used to love the Redwall books, but that was about ten years ago, and I don't remember a whole lot anymore. So...this is awkward... but I don't get any of those references you just made. Sorry. I'm a terrible Redwall fan.
Silent Fox just reminded me of Marlfox, I guess.
Wow, now I really want to read Redwall stuff again.

The only thing I have ever mastered,
Is the skill to create disaster after disaster,
And when I try to stop it,
It only happens faster,
And this is why I am called,
The Dark Master.

Fluffy and Lothario were two nicknames I had at high school.

Randal Graves . . . just a great fuckin' movie character. Oddly enough, this is the only place I have that user name. Everywhere else it's AzOutcast. The name somewhat clashes with the avatar, but the photoshop was too good to pass up.
-
I wanted a neat name. Sin's a good place to start. Though the shortening to "Sinth" has ended up more popular than "Sin" which I like anyway.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the Clerks movies until after I'd been on DTF for a few years. The character name seemed oddly familiar to me.
Then I was browsing the forum and suddenly it hit me. :lol

My name is Josh and I am a Jason Voorhees fan.

Awake is my favorite DT album.
Octavarium is my favorite DT song.
From is a conjunction.
That's all.

I am the duke of york

My 2nd attempt at combining DT album names. I like this name over Images and Memory over at MP's forum.

Operant Conditioning Chamber aka Skinner Box.
Long story short, it's a box where you train animals with reward or punishment. It's the basis of behavioral Psychology.
And I think it sounds cool.
:hat

XianL
X can be construed as a symbol for "Christ", and my name is Christian. "Christ"+ian = Xian. So if you ever have troubles pronouncing it, just think "Christian" (I'm looking at you, Nick :P)
And L is the first letter of my last name :tup
So you couldn't tell me this that time I asked you over PSN?!?! I hate you!!
Mine's pretty dumb, I was walking by the living room in my house and they had this Disney movie playing, Anastasia, where one of the characters is name Demetrio in the Spanish translation, so I changed it to Dimitrius and I've been using it ever since.
-
I was putting together a 3D animation video for a school project, and though it would be cool to have some sort of company name at the beginning. Since I had already put together the text intro on a red/orange gradient background, it looked like flowing fire, so I came up with "Fiery Winds" and turned in a "Fiery Winds Production".

It's okay. You've made up for your lame username origins by having an awesome avatar. :tup

I won it in a fight to the death with a homeless man. I won when I tricked him into crunching up an old 9V battery. Hungry bugger.

no story behind it. it always was and always will be.

Mine's kinda corny . . . when I joined the forum my wife was a lot more into DT than she is now, so we were the "Dream" team. With DT becoming more uber-metal with each release, her fandom has slacked off unfortunately.

There's a philosopher named Tick?

Yes. Haven't you ever seen the cartoon? If that's not a hard-core philosopher in action, I don't know what is.

No one on this board has really yet figured out I'm nuts.

I get it. ;D

I don't.
Anyway, quoted from the duplicate thread.
Last year, me and a friend were reading the back of our English textbook and the play "Waiting For Godot" was mentioned. We never heard of it so we looked it up, and laughed our asses off at the plot and concept. Soon, several stupid inside jokes developed between the two of us related to Waiting For Godot. My username is a reference to that, intentionally misspelled because I like the way it looks that way.
-
It's a Beatles reference, as far as I know.
-
My surname begins with G, and I asked a friend from my old school to attract a teacher's attention for me while I got a book out, and he said, 'Miss, Tom marvellous G wants you!' Which I thought was the best name ever, which was understandable as I was about ten. What's less understandable is that it still makes me giggle. (and has the added bonus of making people misspell it when it's RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM 73109 >:( )

I holiday in the Greek islands a lot.... one of my friends gave me the tag... it stuck and I use it on most of the forums I've been on...
