Looks like John (Myung) may be putting out another album with Ty Tabor and Rod Morgenstein! Yay for fans of The Jelly Jam!
From www.tytabor.net (news section)
November 20, 2009
Ty Tabor, John Myung, and Rod Morgenstein are discussing the possibility of recording a new Jelly Jam album in 2010. This would be their third release as The Jelly Jam and their fifth overall release together. More news coming soon!
>>>I really hope this happens. I dug this side project big time!
-
2010 looks to be side-project year. Here's hoping JP does another one too.
-
Great news! To me Jelly Jam is a very underrated project, I love this band!
-
If economic times are such that touring does not make sense, it's a good time to do side-project albums.
-
Are there vocals on the other Jelly Jam CDs? If so, who sings?
-

Makes Sense. It just seems odd that they would risk losing their momentum now that they are bigger and more popular than they've been since Pull Me Under.
-

Yes, it is Ty Tabor.
-
Thanks!
-
So, MP is on Transatlantic, JLB on his solo stuff, JR will surely do several things, and JM is even doing Jelly Jam.
I WANT ANOTHER JOHN PETRUCCI SOLO ALBUM.
Suspended Animation is SOOOO great, my favorite CD of instrumental music, and I really wish a follow up was done.

I want more accoustic shows next Christmas!

I'd actually like to see JP team up with some other established players and do some sort of "supergroup" project. I'd love to hear him write with other musicians outside DT (as opposed to hearing him do all the writing and bring in some other guys to play, as on a solo album). I mean, yeah, there's the possibility it could suck and just be Chickenfoot2. But it could also be really cool.
-
Yeah, that would be cool too. If a solo album isn't done that would certainly be a nice treat.

What? The Chickenfoot album is amazing!
It'd be very cool to hear JP do something to that effect, though, and step out of his normal prog metal comfort zone.
-
Exciting news indeed! :D

They'd call the band BEARfoot!

YESSSSSSSSS!
I was hoping JMX would do something new, and it looks like I'm not going to be disappointed!
I totally forgive DT for not doing a 2010 tour now :D
-
If economic times are such that touring does not make sense, it's a good time to do side-project albums.
Oh, and I always thought that with touring, bands make more money than with just releasing an album.
But that's really worth its own thread: what do prog bands have to do to make money with what they do? Personally, I became quite pessimistic... More and more people illegally download albums, and less and less people go to concerts.
Examples for the latter? I have a lot...
Examples for the first? Just read the internet...
-
I think for DT's case it wasn't a matter that they wouldn't make money touring. It was that they'd have to scale down the venues and tour significantly more than they did the first leg, which none of the members were really up to.
-
If economic times are such that touring does not make sense, it's a good time to do side-project albums.
Oh, and I always thought that with touring, bands make more money than with just releasing an album.
Generally speaking, you are right. But, reading between the lines a bit, it seems like what Mike was saying is that the reason they decided not to do a headlining tour in 2010 was that it just did not make economic sense right now. Assuming there are no other factors and that it was truly economic, I am guessing that promoters are just skittish about tour booking right now due to the general economic times leading to low concert attendance. So promoters in some markets may be telling DT that they are willing to book them in smaller venues with smaller guarantees, or not at all. If that is the case, the band very well may have just decided that if they weren't going to make X amount of dollars, it might just make sense to postpone the tour and not saturate the market right now. I mean, let's say they want to do some side project work or other things. Doing so takes time away from DT. Throwing out some very hypothetical numbers, let's say that due to economic times, they would probably only make a total of $100,000 per member if they toured hard in 2010 and didn't take time off. But if they expect they can do better in 2011 and make $150,000 per member that year if they tour hard and don't take time off, that's a different number. So, looking long-term, it makes more sense to do the side-project stuff in a down year than in an up year.
-
What would be awesome is if JLB decided now was finally the time to try Broadway.
-
All of these thing sound cool and all, but I hope MP releases something from this last tour on Ytsejam.
-
I doubt it. He doesn't seem to release live bootlegs of the tours they've just finished. I think a Systematic Chaos show would come first, if not something entirely older (I doubt there really is anything except maybe full versions of shows that were on OIALT).
I really wish there were audio versions of Bucharest and Santiago, but since they're already out on DVD I doubt we'll get 'em.
-

I think it's easy enough to rip 'em , no? I would have no clue, but a guy at work did it for me.
I doubt it. He doesn't seem to release live bootlegs of the tours they've just finished.
Yeah, but that could be because each of the last 3 albums' tours were followed by an official release. There is no official release coming, and I think MP would be cognizant of all of the people that missed out on this tour and having to miss out on experiencing The Count Of Tuscany live.
-
It'd be very cool to hear JP do something to that effect, though, and step out of his normal prog metal comfort zone.
Thiiiiiiis. But I'd *gladly* embrace a second Petrucci solo album too.
I've never heard the Jelly Jam. What's it like, and what do people here think about it in general?
-J

In my opinion, they sound a LOT like King's X, just with Ty singing all the lead vocals. Maybe a bit more experimental, but otherwise, not vastly different. Definitely not wildly progressive like a lot of the other side projects, but I don't mean that as a negative in any way.
-
I want more accoustic shows next Christmas!
DT Christmas album? Jethro Tull has one.
Wow, they missed a big opportunity: DTX could have been DTX-mas. :metal
-
So it looks like 2010 is going to be an exciting year in the music world.
JMX may be doing a new Jellyjam album, MP is touring with Transatlantic, JLB is releasing a solo album and may do a small tour, and JP has mentioned that another solo album is very possible. Now we just need JR to do a side project or solo album, which I could definitely see.
Also, maybe JLB can do that broadway thing he mentioned.
Then, near the end of 2010, they'll start working on the 11th Dream Theater studio album, recharged and revitalized, with a ton of new, fresh ideas from playing outside of the band.
-
Never heard any of The Jelly Jam's stuff, but this is great news. I really want all members of DT to make full use of the break. Personally I'm dying for more solo albums from JLB, JP and JR, but it's great to see JM feeling inspired to put out more music too. It might even get him fired up for the next DT album.

Fired up as in lyrics writing or wearing a blue shirt?

Hey, let's not get all crazy and just speculate beyond all bounds of reason and reality. You can just stop this blue shirt madness right here and now.

I don't even think he would bass in a dark grey shirt, let alone blue.
As for the Jelly Jam, and the others, I hope to hear some good stuff from the boys.
-
huh...I went and sampled from "2"
seemed like a fun band.
sampling platypus now
-
ended up buying platypus and listening to it right now...I like it!

Well, we already know he's going to write more lyrics....

Fixed.

Cool stuff.

This. It's never occurred to me that James writing lyrics has had anything to do with him wanting to or not. I always just assumed it was all done before he came in. I'd expect the same with John.

"Ty Tabor, John Myung, and Rod Morgenstein are discussing the possibility of recording a new Jelly Jam album in 2010."
:omg:
-
The Jelly Jam's first album is a killer rock record.
-
I've never heard any of The Jelly Jam before, but this sounds like a very good combination of talents. Maybe I'll try and pick up the first album sometime soon.
-
Oops, wrong thread.
-
I hope this happens
-
Yay! More DT side-projects! Petrucci has said he'd like to do another solo album and has some lines and compositions he could use for it, but nothing has been programmed yet. JLB says he's planning to do a solo album, which I'm eagerly waiting for along with JP's. MP is on Transatlantic and has been doing some cover gigs with HAIL! (Phil Demmel, Andreas Kisser, "Ripper" Owens, David Ellefson & Him), and JR has already released a solo single with his daughter destined to charity, "For the Moment". Everyone's doing side-projects!!! I really hope that JMX's JellyJam project album is good, though I haven't heard anything from them yet.
-
it would be awesome if by chance we got Liquid Tension Experiment 3 ;D
-
I thought the Jelly Jam was alright, but I'd prefer to see a JM solo project. It didn't seem like he really contributed very much to Platypus and Jelly Jam. The guy seems to be pretty creative, and he's damn sure got some talent playing. I'd like to see him recruit some guys for a project that actually features him doing his own thing.
Actually, I just now discovered that there's a Jelly Jam II album. Maybe he actually breaks out a little on it. I'll have to check it out.
-
I hope this will be an album where JM is really "into it" again, as sadly it's been a while.
-
I thought the Jelly Jam was alright, but I'd prefer to see a JM solo project.
I don't know, there's always the risk that the first half would be nothing but scales. Though at least we'd probably get a bass solo in a song where he does a bass solo. :P
But yeah, any outlet for JMX to unleash his creativity would be awesome.
-
The latest TJJ album was really good, I'd like to see a new one soon
-
congrats on finally descending, that's quite a nice bump you have there :lol

Now THAT is what's known as "a period of time"! ;D
-
Haven't heard one note of The Jelly Jam, but recently I've started to really enjoy (and look forward to) those moments in DT songs when JM gets to do something cool, so I might give them a chance in the future.

I just pulled the two of them off the shelf and listened to them yesterday.
A tour would be really cool at some point.
-
Funny how they've posted once per year lol.
I'm really excited about this.
-
The pulled the two of them off the shelf and listened to them yesterday.
Which two? You know there are three albums, right?
-
Which Jelly Jam album is the best? I have the first two and even though I love Ty Tabor, they were just ok for me. On the other hand, Jughead was a fun album that I still break out today.
-
I do not have the third either. I didn't listen to the first one very much. It didn't really grab me. I listened to the second one much more (although still not much in the grand scheme of things) and felt it had much more memorable songs.
Honestly, I don't find them much different than a lot of the King's X material that Ty took the lead on. Not that that's a bad thing--I'm just saying it isn't overly "unique" as a side project.
-
Actually, I will rephrase my question. What is your favorite Jelly Jam
album song?
-
I have the first two. The debut is a really strong record that I still listen to on a regular basis, the second one was okay but nothing really grabbed me and it sounded too much like Ty's solo work and King's X.
The third and fourth ones aren't really promoted on a big level, are they?
-
Actually, I will rephrase my question. What is your favorite Jelly Jam album song?
Allison
-
Mine has to be Under The Tree, although I only have the first album. Damn, I've always meant to buy the second one but never got around to it. I didn't even know there was a third album, unless I did but forgot about it.
-
It hasn't been mentioned a tour is on the works! How cool is that? And how weird will it be seeing Myung playing on stage with other project that isn't Dream Theater?
-
Funny how they've posted once per year lol.
Social Media clearly isn't their strong point.
-
I just pulled the two of them off the shelf and listened to them yesterday.

No clue whatsoever (or I forgot) Thanks! Only got the first two.
You've just made my day. Looks like I get to hear new Jelly Jam (for me) before I thought I would.
How awesome is that?
-
:lol For some reason, I never got the third album. It wasn't a conscious decision. I just sort of...forgot and then never mustered up the motivation to track it down the couple of times I was reminded.
-
:lol
This thread isn't exactly a ringing endorsement for The Jelly Jam.
-
:lol For some reason, I never got the third album. It wasn't a conscious decision. I just sort of...forgot and then never mustered up the motivation to track it down the couple of times I was reminded.
I just have to find a copy now.
Does Platypus have a third album? Only got the first two there too.
-
The third one isn't that easy to find. That's one of the reasons I don't have it.
And Platypus had only two releases. Of that I'm sure.
-
For anyone trying to track down their music: all three records are on Spotify.
-
Which Jelly Jam album is the best?
Easy: Shall We Descend. The other albums (and let´s add the two from Platypus - Sherinian doesn´t make too much a difference, as expected, so I consider the 5 albums to belong to the same group) are interesting, but they were not a band per se - they were just some friends putting songs together. Lyrics were haphazardly. But with Shall We Descend, they found their style, their spirit. Beautiful album. :tup
And I bought it on release, so I have a picture of the band with autographs! Yeah! :metal
Have you checked the cover of the nem album?
:o :o :o :o :o :o
-
Wow, that seems a lot more serious and dark than I have gotten from them in the past. But cool cover art.
-
Wow, that seems a lot more serious and dark than I have gotten from them in the past. But cool cover art.
Please do check Shall We Descent. It´s the darker of the 5 - in fact, there´s nothing in any of the other album as serious and dark as in SWD. I bought that album, and then, retroatively, got the other ones. And from my second favorite ("2") to my favorite, SWD, there´s a LOOOOONG way.
-
Sherinian doesn't make a difference? I beg to disagree. For me Platypus is a whole different band, sure there are similarities, but songs like Platt Opus, What About The Merch? Partial To The Bean and others don't sound like Jelly Jam. Sherinian doesn't play a lot of flashy keyboards but he makes his impact and probably on the songwriting too.
-
Dark Ty Tabor band? Whoa. That sounds weird, but intriguing.
-

Well, so the fact is - I don´t like Sherinian. Because those songs you have mentioned I consider the weakest of the group. Of course it´s evident Sherinian had a finger in them (or ten fingers), but they don´t add, in my opinion. If Tabor had recorded keyboards on those Platypus albums, they would be better.
And for me it´s evident Ice Cycles and Jelly Jam are a natural sequence one from other. They are very similar, meaning: the same band. I think they have dropped the name because of Inside Out Music - as Mullmuzzler/James LaBrie, not because Derek left.
But this is, of course, my opinion. And probably the band´s opinion too, as they don´t seem to miss Sherinian at all. When they annouced that Platypus would change their name to Jelly Jam and carry on without Sherinian, I doubt there were any hunger strikes or angry discussions anywhere.
But, just to make that clear, that´s my opinion - and, again, I must say Shall We Descent in way above the other albums.
-
Platypus - The Jelly Jam - Jughead
The only thing that changed was Ty had to choose between Myung and Sherinian after the break. He chose both. And Jughead is the best band of all three.
-

Hm, yes, you are right. I´m nitpicking on Sherinian. :loser:
Nice song, this "Care". Is on the vibe of SWD, I enjoyed the production.
-
I would be so up for anything with Myung and Morganstein, but keep Ty Tabor away from them. What a waste!
-
Checked out Care and revisitied Allison per recommendation.
Allison is a great song. Has that Ty Tabor influence I like (Beatles, but not Beatles). Original and stands out.
Care is a song I'd enjoy, but at the same time wouldn't find it all that unique.
-
I'm not even sure what a Rod / John song would sound like. The Jelly Jam is so heavily Ty Tabor influenced, that it is like imagining Sheehan and Portnoy without Kotzen in Winery Dogs.
Ytse-Dixie-Jam?
-
See, I think that's another waste of a lineup. I would want more out of Sheehan/Portnoy that run of the mill average rock trio music.
-
What do you think a Rod Myung song would sound like? I honestly can't put my finger on it.
Is there a list somewhere of the "John Myung riffs" in DT. The only one I can remember off the top of my head is Ytse Jam. Not talking about lyrics.
-
Not sure, but it has to be better than this.
It's me. I'm being a dick. I would love to get behind anything MP or JM does, but I just can't do this.
OK.. carry on! :)
-

I'm picturing TAC's review of his first listen of a Jelly Jam CD.
TAC - "This is probably the best song on the CD."
Friend - "The CD ended two minutes ago."

-
I like Ty Tabor, but much more as a guitarist than lead singer. King's X has a lot of great stuff, but the songs with Ty on lead vocals are definitely not what I gravitate toward.

Newest Jelly Jam tune. I like it I must say even if I'm not familiar with the band.

Got this in my inbox from DT:
The Jelly Jam will release their epic new album Profit on 27th May 2016 via Music Theories Recordings.
The Jelly Jam feature DREAM THEATER's John Myung, WINGER's Rod Morgenstein, KING'S X's Ty Tabor and will return in 2016 with a new album and their first-ever world tour.
Profit is a glorious and affecting cinematic experience, full of suspense; the record follows the heroic yet daunting journey of The Prophet who, inspired by a deep sense of responsibility, embarks on a mission to try and save the world, and to open the eyes of Those Who Will Not See.
The Jelly Jam will support their latest album with full tour dates to be announced HERE. As guitarist Ty Tabor explains, "This album is without a doubt the most special moment the band has ever had together, and we must make touring real this year to support it."
Profit is now available to pre-order from the MLG store. The 180 grams vinyl is limited to 2000 copies, and comes with a download card.

Cool that they are going to tour. I hope it works out that I can catch a show.
As for the song itself, I like it. Pretty typical of what they do. I like Care better, but this one is still solid.
-
They are playing at a really cool place 20 minutes from my house. I should go.
-
Does anyone know why the band is named The Jelly Jam? Just curious.
-
Cuz you be jelly of their jams, yo.
-
Seems like they're working harder in terms of promoting this album than the one several years ago. I should probably give a listen to one of these songs and check out the album.
-
Recently discovered this group, I've been digging Shall We Descend. Looking forward to the new record.

LOL. Shit. Bosk1 locked the other thread on the DT section...
Anyways, did anybody see the Chapman stick in the studio?
I'm very stoked for this release! :metal And sounds like this one will be a lot heavier than the previous 3 releases.
-

I am also wondering why they switched record labels. Molken Music released Shall We Descend and now Music Theories Recordings (subdivision of Mascot) is releasing this one. Maybe a better distribution channels/deal?
-
Most likely. Some rather big bands are on that label (like Flying colors, if I recall correctly).
-
As far as I know Molken Music is the label of Wally Farkas from the Galactic Cowboys. I think it's similar to Ytsejam Records, most of the products are live records, bootlegs and special or exclusive stuff. There isn't a big machinery behind that handles promotion and distribution and such.
-

In case anyone cares about this kind of thing, the vinyl is not limited to 2000 copies. The first pressing is 2000 copies but if they sell out, there will be another pressing that will be identical to the first.
-
Got my CD from Mascot yesterday. :metal
So far it sounds amazing. I think I'm going to order the JJ shirt.

I got the album two days ago and have been listening nonstop. This might be my favorite Jelly Jam album.
-
It's a solid, really good album, maybe the best TJJ album in terms of melodies. But my first impression is that some songs have great ideas that should be worked more, in a bit more longer songs.
-
Just picked this up as well as the new Frost album. I'll be spinning both this weekend.

The new album is really good, definitely some great JMX lines on there.
-
That's a really good album. It sounds a bit like Porcupine tree. Some songs reminded me a band of the 90's: Dishwalla. The vocals are great and every instruments are recorded in a perfect tone.
-
Jus got it two days ago, very cool! It is so different in a good way, almost easy listening in some areas and tranquil. Great bass lines and guitar work, the vocals are similar to Porcupine Tree (Steve Wilson).
I still need to listen to it without any distractions so I can give a better review. I like it so far..
-
the vocals are similar to Porcupine Tree (Steve Wilson).
No they aren't. They are actually listenable.

Was hoping they would at least hit Chicago on their tour. Looks like it's purely east coast :(
-
Wait have they even played a show before? Didn't even know they existed before the latest album.

As far as I know, they've never played live before. It's a shame they're doing such a short run in such a limited area, I would have loved to see them.

Guess I'm seeing their first show. Seeing them in New Hope

That's awesome, I hope you enjoy it. I'll definitely be scouring YouTube for clips after every show. It should be a great show, they're all great musicians. I just saw King's X a few weeks ago and it Ty's playing and singing is still great.

Had a great time Saturday night. Didn't know what to expect especially being their first show ever.

Cool! Any info about the setlist and overall performance? Thanks!

Interesting setlist...around 2 hours of show and A LOT from the first CD, although the band seems to think the last one is the best, really special etc (as always? ;D)
-
I hope the band films one show. I'm a big JJ fan but I can't make it to any of the shows this time around.
-
Cool to see that they played Allison and I Am The King, easily my two favorite Jelly Jam songs. I read somewhere that the band would be hanging out after the shows to meet people (much like King's X does), but I wonder if Myung will participate in that too, or if it's just Ty and Rod.
-
Wish they'd play Under The Tree. But other than that it's a good setlist.

Forgot to mention that they did do a meet and greet after the show. I wasn't aware they were doing one so I didn't bring anything to be signed. After the signing Ty and Rod hung out while Myung hid in the corner

Ressurrecting this thread from out of the vaults to say that I'm seeing them in Toronto this Friday. Anyone wanna meet up?

I saw them in New Hope last weekend and it was an awesome show. Rod Morgenstein is especially fun to watch.

Would have been there if my brake line didn't blow up on my way to Havana's. Did they all sign at a table after the show? (Just because I love torturing myself!)

Yes they did. Jerry Gaskill was also there.

It was insanely good!!! Attendance was a bit of a letdown... about 40 people there. But I took a picture with Myung, he actually spoke to me and smiled!!!

There you go...you can see half of Rod Morgenstein next to Myung:

I hope they tour again. JJ is my favorite DT side project. I just couldn't make it this time around.

Never would have figured on Jerry being there. How may people were there.?

I would guess around 75 people in the area with the tables, don't know if any of the people at the bar were there for the show or not. Really cool venue, perfect volume too. I had a nice little chat with Ty about some guitar-related stuff. Some potentially cool things could come out of that!
Here's the picture I got with the band:

Nice! Love that venue too. Hope to be there a few more times this year.

I plan on seeing Alex Skolnick Trio there October 7. Would love to meet up if you're going too!

Ha Ha! That was my plan too, actually. That would be cool.
