Hey everyone is doing it, so I thought I would make a top # thread too. I think some of my choices will surprise some people.
If anyone else wants to do their own Thrice list when I'm done with mine, you are welcome to. Shoot me a PM and I'll edit the title once you start your list.
Here we go!
20. In Exile
It took me a few listens to start liking Beggars. This is definitely one of the stand out tracks. I think it's one of Dustin's best vocal performances on the album, and the lyrics are well done. I like how the song is kind of bare bones and simple; it helps the vocals come through strongly. The chorus is also well done.
19. Broken Lungs
For a song about 9/11, I think they did an awesome job with it; the references are subtle enough to not be preachy or in your face. This song has very good instrumentation: the drums are perfect, the marimba following the guitar melody is pretty cool as well. I love the ending of the song as well (from like 3:19 onward). This song also came across very well live, on the HOB dvd.
18. Don't Tell and We Won't Ask
I think most people overlook this song. I've always like it a lot for some reason, and I'm not sure why. I think it serves as a great ending track to TAITA. I like the second half of the song a lot, where it breaks down and builds back up. This song is also pretty cool on the live dvd.
17. Red Sky
Vheissue is my favorite Thrice album. They certainly captured a unique feel especially with this song. The intro with the electronic drums is really cool; Thrice would expand on their use of electronic elements on their following album. This song has a great and emotive vocal performance, and a great chorus.
-
Red Sky, so early? But then again nearly every Thrice album has its great share of gold on it.
-
There better be some Daedalus up in this bitch.
-
Awww... Broken Lungs is one of my top thrice songs.
Good picks all around, though.
-
If i dont see Child of Dust on here im gonna attack you.
-
There better be some Daedalus up in this bitch.

Cannot wait to see your results.

16. Moving Mountains
I overlooked this song when I first listened to the Alchemy Index, but now it's one of my favorites from that album. Who knew Thrice could write a folk song? The song is so minimalist (it's just vocals, guitar, and the percussion keeping time) and yet it works so well. The lyrics to this song are extremely well written. I love the acoustic guitar line too.
15. Doublespeak
Another top song from Beggars. The instrumentation is great in this song; I love how more is added in each verse. This song has a great chorus that you can't help moving or singing along to. This song is high on the list of songs that I want to see Thrice play live.
14. Silhouette
How can you not love this song? At the time of The Artist in the Ambulance, this was Thrice's heaviest song. It's an excellent use of 7/4 as well; if you don't pay attention you won't even notice the irregular meter. Thrice is really good at doing that any time that they use odd meters. This song is also one of the few times that Riley uses double bass, which is cool.
-
All three of these are excellent choices. I would have like to see MM and Doublespeak higher, but that's cool.
And yes, Deadalus has better win, or I will be very disapointed.

I would rank this song higher, and it's good to see it make the list. :tup
I don't know if you're a Christian, but read 1 Corinthians 13. You'll see where he got the inspiration for the lyrics.
Here is the chapter, really cool to read when you know the song: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20corinthians%2013&version=NIV (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20corinthians%2013&version=NIV)
(Not trying to derail or "preach," I just thought it was really cool and wanted to share)
-
I was actually reading up on some of that yesterday, along with a few other Thrice songs that draw inspiration from bible passages. It's interesting.
-
14. Silhouette

I love this song :metal Glad to see it on your list :tup

13. The Arsonist
This is my favorite song off of Fire. It's the heaviest song on The Alchemy Index as well. I love the lyrics to this song for some reason; they paint the story and meaning of the song very well. The part where it switches between 5/4 and 6/4 is awesome. I wish this song had been a part of the House of Blues DVD; I think it would translate over to a live setting very well.
12. Night Diving
This choice might suprise some people. This is Thrice's only true instrumental song (The Next Day doesn't really count). This song always puts me in a relaxed mood. I love how the song builds up, comes down, then builds back up again. The quarter note rest in the main melody (distortion guitar) is also cool; it makes the melody start on an offbeat every time. I wouldn't mind Thrice doing some more instrumentals like this in the future.
11. Stare at the Sun
No list would be complete without this song in it. It's a great well known Thrice anthem, and for good reasons. This song has awesome lyrics; probably some of the best on TAiTA. The bass part in the beginning is also awesome (Ed does a good job of coming up with cool bass parts that don't follow the guitars). A Thrice classic.
-
:tup :tup :tup
All excellent choices. I love Night Diving, I agree with all your points really.
-
Agree 100%.
-
Another three good choices. :tup
-
Good choices so far.
For me, one song that I've just recently discovered is Digging My Own Grave. Really cool song.
-
Night Diving is an awesome song, I probably would've put it a little higher even ;)
-
Starting the top ten!
10. Image of the Invisible
Vheissue is my favorite Thrice album, and this song is just an awesome opener to it. The verses have the call and response thing going on, rendering this an awesome song to be played live (I wish it was on the dvd). This is another of my favorite Thrice choruses. I like the electronic drums during the second verse; this was really the first album that Thrice started experimenting with electronic and synth sounds, and they do a great job with it. This song had a pretty cool video too; it seems to give the song a deeper meaning, but I'm not sure what it is (missing children?)
9. All That's Left
Another Thrice classic, and another set of my favorite lyrics; the vocal melodies and delivery in this song are just great (including the harmonies and backup vox). There's really not much else to say about this song; it's straight forward but very well written.
8. Music Box
Ha I can't think of any other band or song that uses the sound of a music box in the intro to a song. This is one of my favorites off of Vheissu. The chorus to this song is just :metal The softer verses are a nice contrast to the choruses. Again, the electronic drums in the second verse are cool (they might be real, but the sound of they sound a lot more broken down). The 7/4 riff in the bridge is another highlight, and another example of their ability to use odd meters very well.

Well spoken and a good choice.
-
I'm going to have to put together my top 20, for the sake of comparison. I have a feeling it's going to be INCREDIBLY different. I was thinking about doing the Thrice list when all of these started popping up. I'm glad you beat me to it Gwii. It's nice to see all of the discussion revolving around them recently.
-
Yeah you're welcome to post your list once mine is finished. People's lists will probably be really different, depending on if you were a fan of Thrice early on (I know a lot of people only like TAI)
-
I strated listening to them around TAI, but I still enjoy their earlier stuff.
Even so, most of my favorites are from TAI and on.
-
Yeah, I started listening in high school when Identity Crisis came out. A lot of the older stuff has sentimental value, so I have admitted bias towards it. I still like a lot of the newer stuff, but I doubt it will ever eclipse The Illusion of Safety and The Artist in the Ambulance for me.
-
Regardless, I'm just glad Thrice continues to motivate and inspire people. Whether people prefer one song over another is simply personal preference.
-
Not to get too off topic, but have any of you guys picked up the If We Could See Us Now documentary? You can't help but love these guys after watching that DVD! I throw it in every year or so just to remind myself why they're so great.
-
I meant to get that a few years ago, and completely forgot about it.
-
Music Box is awesome, glad to see it on the list :D
-
Where's Gwii at? You've got me on the edge of my seat waiting for an update :)
-
Where's Gwii at? You've got me on the edge of my seat waiting for an update :)
Ha, I'm only adding an update once a day. Here it is:
7. Cold Cash and Colder Hearts
This is the best intro to a Thrice album ever. Everthing about this song is awesome: great melodies and instrumentation, great vocals (I love how they do it live where they go back and forth singing lines), and great drums. I love the last minute of this song; there's so much energy (and it's in 5/4). The strings at the very end are a nice touch as well (perfect seque into UaKM).
6. The Artist in the Ambulance
This is my favorite song from this album, and I think it stands out the most compared to the rest of the album. The lyrics and their delivery are the best part of this song. The harmonies in the prechorus are great. The part from the end of the first chorus to the beginning of the second chorus is one of my favorite Thrice moments ("Look around and you'll see that at times it feels like no one really cares..." up to "There's a line drawn in the sand...").
5. Digital Sea
When I first heard this song (which was right after I listened to Fire), I was like, ok this is not Thrice, I downloaded the wrong CD (it was a legal download, so don't get all crazy :P). But after I heard it a few times, it grew to be one of my favorite Thrice songs. It's one of their most unique songs. After seeing it live on the dvd, my appreciation for it grew tenfold. I love the synth and electronic stuff in this song; it's the most synth Thrice has ever used in a song. The lyrics are also extremely well done, they might be my favorite set of Thrice lyrics; the vocals sound pretty chilling as well with the effect they have on them. They definitely captured the "water" feel with this song.
-
Good Choices. I'm not a huge Artist in the Ambulance fan (song, not album), but I understand why so many people like it. I think I'll go listen to Cold Cash and Colder Hearts right now though...
-
Digital Sea is amazing on the Live at the House of Blues DVD
-
All three are amazing songs. This just gets better and better. :tup
-
Approaching the end here! I'll reveal number one tomorrow (anyone who guesses it can do a Thrice list next).
4. The Earth Will Shake
I don't even know where to start with this song, because I love everything about it. The music creates such a mood along with the mix of clean and aggressive vocals. It calms down a bit at around two minutes in, then slowly builds back up. I love that organ sounding instrument in the background at around 2:47. From 2:55 to the end of the song is incredible, especially live. Hearing the whole crowd sing that part during the crescendo is just epic. I also like how Dustin and Teppei switch back and forth on the screaming lines. The ending of the song (LOOK TO THE DAY THE EARTH WILL SHAKE, THESE WEATHERED WALLS WILL FALL AWAY) is :2metal:
3. Hold Fast Hope :yarr :yarr :yarr
Apparently I like this song a lot more than others here (you crazies are trying to vote it off way too soon!). It's my favorite song from Vheissu. The whole thing is in 5/4, which is cool. The lyrics are awesome, and the vocals to this song are very well done. I love how during the first verse, Dustin and Teppei switch off lines, and then they both sing the 3rd line. Then in the second verse, they do harmonies instead. The part at 2:28 (where it's just drums and Dustin screaming) is one of my favorite Thrice moments; it's uncharacteristic of them, but it works very well. The part right after it (where he continues the screams, and Teppei sings over them) is also cool. It's one of Thrice's heaviest and most aggressive songs, and it is awesome live.
2. The Weight
This is easily my favorite song off of Beggars. The lyrics to this song are my favorite Thrice lyrics; they're very well written, have great delivery, and I can relate to them very much at this time in my life. Along with that, this is also one of my favorite choruses that they have done. This song has such a raw feel to it, which kind of contrasts the meaning of the song a bit, but it still works very well.
-
Izzit Daedalus? :metal :metal
-
If it's not Daedalus there is no hope for Gwii.
But Gwii's a cool guy, so it's obviously Daedalus.
-
I have a feeling it will either be Kings Upon the Main, or The Whaler.
-
It better be Daedalus.
-
Oh man, what about Child of Dust or The Messenger? Those would be high on my list.
-

Come All You Weary
We have a winnar!
1. Come All You Weary
I've loved this song since the first time I heard it, and it quickly became my favorite Thrice song. Any time I listen to this song, no matter what else is going on, I can calm down and relax for four minutes. This song is a perfect example of how minimal instrumentation and song writing can go so far. I love the slow folk/blues feel of it. Dustin's vocals on this song are one of his most emotive performances; I especially like the chorus.
Why Daedalus didn't make the list:
I've just never been able to get into this song. I'm listening to it right now, and it's not doing much for me. The music in the song is pretty cool, but that's about it. The biggest reason I don't like this song is the lyrics and vocals; they just feel so forced to me (especially the vocals at the end) and I can't get past them. Singing about mythology is best left to power metal bands.

Since Poseidon guessed it, he can do a Thrice list if he wants. Otherwise, the first person who PM's me can go, and I'll edit the thread and put your name in it.
Thanks for following my list!
-
I would love to sort of do a dual list with someone else, to see the contrast of taste, seeing as how thrice cover many genres. If anyone is interested in anything of the sort i would be willing to go with it.
-
Why Daedalus didn't make the list:
I fail terribly, shot JFK from the grassy knoll, am responsible for the Tunguska event, drove the dinosaurs into extinction, and I am the Antichrist.
Ah, that explains it.
-
I was going to guess that once you told me Lost Continent was wrong... no joke, too. Guess I should've just gone for it in my first post
It is an awesome song though :tup
@ Poseidon: I'd be willing to do one, though I only have the most recent 3 albums so it might be a little weird (It's not hard to do a top 20 from 45 songs though :P)
-
Why Daedalus didn't make the list:
I fail terribly, shot JFK from the grassy knoll, am responsible for the Tunguska event, drove the dinosaurs into extinction, and I am the Antichrist.
Ah, that explains it.
I also am responsible for H1N1 and the recession.
And I broke the dam.
-
Seeing this list is great, because I just got into Thrice after playing 'The Alchemy Index' once in a while. 'Beggars' is what really made me appreciate them a whole lot more. Since then I'm actually going out of my way to dig into the entire 'Index' and some of the older albums too. I just can't get into the smooth emo metal of 'Artist in the Ambulance' though. I'm sure it's a whole lot more than that, but that's what it sounds like to me right now.
I was working tonight, and this 'Come All You Weary' song is just stuck in my head, after just three plays of it. It's absolutely brilliant songwriting. I was wondering if this was a cover of a 'classic' folk song, but they wrote it themselves? Amazing.
-
God dammit Gwii

I'd be up for it.
-
Alright, I will start my list tomorrow, you can go whenever.
-
WHAT I ASKED FIRST
-
then lets have a threesome
-
Well then I need to get to building my list from the top down, see you eventually
EDIT: So I've got the list nearly finished... but not quite.
The problem: I have 22 songs on the list so far. I can't get rid of the last two without the list feeling incomplete, though. And I don't have anymore songs I feel like I NEED to include on the list like I do for everything so far. So I might end up with a top 22 list .-.
EDIT2: I just chopped off the bottom one and #21 will be mentioned before I start the top 5. There, now I can make a top 20 list with 21 songs on it :P
Like I stated earlier, this is only the most recent 3 albums. Even such, picking only 20 was HARD.
-
God dammit Gwii
Yes?
-
Too late fools! Here's my top 20:
20. The Arsonist - Not much can be said about this song. Plenty can be shouted: THERE'S TRUTH BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS!
19. Open Water - Water is a great album. Open Water is the first of 4 Water pieces in my top 20. I love the graceful feel and bubbly background sounds.
18. Under a Killing Moon - The first Thrice song I ever heard (from a Warped Tour mix CD). I still love it to this day. It's short, but it kicks ass.
17. Child of Dust - A great accapela song. I belt this one out whenever I can. A terrific ending to The Alchemy Index, and a song that I would love to see live.
16. Backdraft - My favourite off of Fire. It's not as unusual as The Flame Deluge, and as simply kickass as Firebreather or The Arsonist, but it's another very solid piece, built into a somewhat unorthodox quater of The Alchemy Index.
15. Broken Lungs - Air opens with a great piece. Gwii said it all. It doesn't overdue it, but it captivating enough to warrant many, many listens.
14. Moving Mountains - One of Thrice's great acoustic ballads. I love the groove in this one. An instant favourite of mine, it remains my favourite on Earth.
13. Digital Sea - Another great Water piece. Digital Sea is a classic among Thrice fans. Most love it, and for good reason. It's great to sing along to, and the distortion at the end is still among my favourite Thrice tricks.
12. Stare at the Sun - One of the centerpieces of Thrice's success, Stare at the Sun is as important as it is awesome. Watching it on Live at the House of Blues makes it even better.
11. The Artist in the Ambulance - Another important Thrice song. The Artist another early Thrice song that I heard, and I found it instantly captivating.
10. Atlantic - An unusual piece that I only started to appreciate recently. One of Kensrue's early great vocal songs. The chorus is chilling in a way that is only reached in a few songs.
9. Doublespeak - The most noticeably different piece off of Beggars, Doublespeak just simply rocks. It has all the workings of a great song: cool chorus, unusual catch, and a great groove.
8. Image of the Invisible - I don't think I've ever listened to this song without air-drumming to the bridge. So much about this song rules.
7. Music Box - Another recent favourite of mine. Music Box is so strange, but I enjoy it so much. It's got a great chorus, plus the classical japanese vibe makes it wicked neat.
6. Daedalus - Thrice's epic. It deserves to be on everyone's top 20 list. Great story, and it holds Air and the rest of The Index together so firmly.
5. Lost Continent - Thrice are band all about ocean stories. Atlantic, Open Water, and Digital Sea are among the greats. And the list is not through with them yet. Lost Continent is another great Water piece. It tells an age-old story, and Kensrue delivers it convincingly.
4. Wood and Wire - This song is really sad. Kensrue's lyrics and vocal performance really sell it for me. The drab setting, the last piece of hope the man clings to. It's haunting. Beggars delivers the sadness for me.
3. In Exile - Gwii said it. Kensrue gets struck by some divine power while recording Beggars and every performance he gives is outstanding. The ending is pure genius. It's chilling just how well he conveys the "exiled" feel of the song, finshing it with a lonely vocal melody.
2. The Whaler - Another ocean song! My long-time favourite Thrice song, only dethroned recently after the release of Beggars. The emotion and beauty put forth by Dustin and the rest of the guys is amazing. I hope to one day cover this song, as well. It's one of the great songs to sing along to.
1. The Great Exchange - Yeah, my top song is an ocean song. As soon as I read the lyrics I was in love. Not only is it my favourite Thrice song, I consider my favourite song of all time at the moment. The story tells the most heartfelt tale of human decency. The great exchange of one life for another; an enemy's life at that. I tear up when I hear it, and to me, it is the pillar of greatness that Beggars is built around.
-
I'm happy to see that Lost Continent and The Great Exchange are getting some love :D
And Music Box is indeed an awesome song.
I do find it strange that neither of my top two have made a top 20 list yet :tdwn
-
Interesting list setrataeso :tup

Don't blame me for that horrible movie :neverusethis:

So I'm probably going to post my first few once I get back home later today (gonna be out for a while)
My strange top 20 will begin after that. If you though Gwii's list failed.... mine isn't as fail but it as ha lot of weird choices nonetheless <_<
-
Wait, The Great Exchange is an "ocean (or water)" song?
-
God dammit Gwii
Yes?
:lol I was kinda drunk and forgot that I had already commented on your fail.
-
Wait, The Great Exchange is an "ocean (or water)" song?
No, it's not
-
Wait, The Great Exchange is an "ocean (or water)" song?
No, it's not
Yeah it is. It's a tale of a man who joins a sea crew and undergo mutiny, sentencing their captain to die. When his ship goes down, the man swims for his life. When all hope seems lost, the captain, floating on a beam, drags him onto it and drowns, sacrificing his life to save his enemy's. What part of that is not an ocean tale?
-
Wait, The Great Exchange is an "ocean (or water)" song?
No, it's not
Yeah it is. It's a tale of a man who joins a sea crew and undergo mutiny, sentencing their captain to die. When his ship goes down, the man swims for his life. When all hope seems lost, the captain, floating on a beam, drags him onto it and drowns, sacrificing his life to save his enemy's. What part of that is not an ocean tale?
Oh, I was thinking in terms of "water" as in the Alchemy Index water CD.

Well, assuming the boat they were on was made of wood, then the wood represents the earth. Therefore, its more of an anti-water song, since the water represents death, while the beam of the ship, represents earth. Earth = life.
Yup.

Well, I meant more in the literal sense. But sure, lets go with that.

20. In Exile
This song has great build-up and an amazing vocal performance by Kensrue. Really mellow at the beginning but by the end there's so much going on and it has quite an epic feel. The chorus is probably what got it onto the list, though. It's just a cool song and it works really well. The outro vocals are probably the best moment of the album in terms of vocals, just a great performance that works really well with the song.
19. Atlantic
This song was the one the left the biggest impression on me when I first heard Vhiessu. The intro melody gave me chills when I first heard it, and it made me want to come back and listen to the album again. Of course, it's not my favorite or even near my favorite on the album now, but it's a solid song, nice electronic feel to it, and there's a lot of neat little touches that make the song sound really vast in scope. The lyrics are some of the best on the album as well. They've never really done anything quite like it since.
18. Wood And Wire
Another one of the mellow songs on Beggars, and some of the best lyrics as well. The delivery of the vocals is what really makes them shine, though. The chorus is amazing, one of the best Thrice has ever done. The final line leading into the outro is a fine moment indeed. The music of the song is, of course, amazing as most of the mellower Thrice songs seem to be.
17. Broken Lungs
The opener of the Air disc and quite a memorable one. The quiet intro may deceive you at first but this song has one of the heaviest moments on the disc. This song is memorable to me because of its amazing outro... great balance between loud and soft. There's not much else to say except that I enjoy this song from beginning to end.
16. Image Of The Invisible
Great upbeat song, the drums in this track are especially amazing, and especially epic-sounding in the outro. I love the chants in the verses and the chorus has great vocal harmonies, along with a great guitar line. The quiet bridge has great buildup (especially thanks to the drums :P). Overall the song is incredibly solid from beginning to end, there's nothing about it that seems flawed.
Note: I type up these descriptions while listening to the songs so I make sure that I don't miss anything.

This.
I'll probably order Beggars next week.

I'm happy to see that Lost Continent and The Great Exchange are getting some love :D
And Music Box is indeed an awesome song.
I do find it strange that neither of my top two have made a top 20 list yet :tdwn
What are your top two?
-
20. Firebreather
A powerful introduction to a powerful disc. Seeing this live was one of the best concert experiences I have ever had. It's just a simple, straight up rocker that is bound to get you moving. Not to mention it has a awesomely epic ending. It's just all around a very strong song.
19. The Abolition of Man
Again, another rocking song that just doesn't let up. It has a very punk rockish beginning to it, setting up the ideas of the song. Then it moves over to the ball crushing ending to the song, probably the most epic song ending I've heard. A perfect delivery of harsh vocals that actually serve to propel the message of the song, rather than used just for the sake of it.
18. All The World Is Mad
Groovy tune, really would never expect Thrice to make a song like this. With each album I feel Thrice's lyrics just get better and better, and this song only reaffirms my beliefs. One of my favorite just plain rock songs.

-
My top 2 are still excluded from every full list so far :P
T&C? Deadbolt? Trust?
-
I only have the most recent 3 albums and I don't think any of those songs are on them :P
-
15. Circles
Yes, another mellow Beggars song. Probably the mellowest of them all, this song has almost an ambient feel to it at times. The chorus is pretty cool too. This is probably here because I really like the instrumental outro to this song... especially the little bit right before the tremolo picking. It's just a cool way to end the song in my opinion, and works really well in such a mellow song, being the loudest part by far. Not much else to say except that this is a really neat song.
14. Firebreather
The contrast between mellow and heavy during the verses really works well, and the chorus has an epic feel to it, heavy yet rather slow but building up to something... Great album opener as well, basically prepares you for the rest of the disc, though this is actually one of the lighter songs on Fire. What really gets me is the long outro (everything after the 2nd chorus). Great riff, nice "whoa" vocals, and it doesn't feel too long like some outros can. Oh and it has time signature changes that work really well.
13. Burn The Fleet
More of a straightforward song, but definitely one of the best vocal performances on The Alchemy Index. Another one of those epic sounding songs, lyrics are amazing as well. I also really like the drums in this song, really add to the feel of the song and there's a lot of subtle things that make a big difference. The "solo" is one of those solos that doesn't need any technicality to sound good (Thrice has never really been about technical guitar playing as far as I can tell - just great songwriting and amazing lyrics.)
12. Night Diving
"But Parama, if Thrice is about the lyrics, then why are you putting an instrumental song on your list?" Well dur, it's an amazing instrumental song. Great guitar riffs, nice contrast between the mellow and the heavy, probably the song that best captures the "water" sound out of all of Thrice's songs. There's so much going on this song that it takes many listens to fully appreciate it, but when it comes down to it this is just an awesome song that I feel wouldn't work nearly as well with lyrics. Heck, the song's only half over at this point but I have nothing left to say (Fates Warning is pretty cool too) so I'm just gonna listen to the rest of the song now, bye!
So there's a nice Alchemy Index combo for you all.
Also can you change the thread title please Gwii? ::)
-
Yeah, I think at this point, we could change this to The Thrice Thread or something.
-
17. Silver Wings
A really short, but very solid track. It is a perfect representation of what they were trying to accomplish with the elements idea, and it fits air perfectly. One of Thrice's simple songs, but it works very well.
16. Paper Tigers
Well, a very strange track in comparison to the rest of the album. Probably Thrice's only straight up metal song. But man, it is a very bad ass tune. The chorus is so skullfuckingly epic, and has some awesome drum and bass work. And it showcases Dustin's A-Grade screaming vocals.
15. Red Sky
A great ending to one of their best albums. It has some really interesting lyrics, as do most of Thrice's songs. And the way it ends with the awesome instrumental section just finishes the album perfectly.
-
I have to say this thread inspired me to check out Thrice. I've listened to The Artist in the Ambulence and Beggars all the way through. Absolutely amazing albums! I just finished The Alchemy Index Vol's I and II. Mindblowing stuff. Thanks for making this thread Gwii :tup
-
Yay! A recruit!
Check out the Thrice survivor if you feel inclined. We always need more voters. Vheissu is up right now.

Awesome. Glad you like them! :hat

14. Digital Sea
Seeing them play this song live absolutely made the song much better. The effects and atmosphere it can create make it a very powerful track. It opens the Water disc in a way that really gets you going without spoiling any of the atmosphere.
13. Deadbolt
Their signature song, it really was a bright spot in their early career, setting up what would later become one of their most beloved albums. Probably one of the greatest songs of their early albums, and sums up what makes their hardcore side so great
-
11. The Great Exchange
Yes, another mellow Beggars song. They're just that good. What makes this song truly memorable is the lyrics. When I first read the lyrics for the song I was like "What he's actually saying that? 0_o" They're mindblowing and a little depressing... yet still optimistic. Anyways, the song itself is also great, the chorus is another one of those great moments, the guitar riff throughout the song is pretty neat too. It also sounds like a water song despite the lack of electronic sound all the other water songs have had. It's the shortest song on the album but it leaves just as big of an impact as the rest of the songs on the album.
10. Music Box
This is a pretty cool softer song WAIT WHAT THE HECK THE SONG JUST EXPLODED? The intro deceived me the first time I heard the song for sure. This one took me a long time to get into, but it was worth it. It's probably up here because of the amazing numerous build-ups this song manages to accomplish. You know something big is coming when you here those chords before the chorus, and the song certainly doesn't disappoint. This is also one of my favorite vocal performances on the album - it's just really really good. There's a lot going on in this song but it comes together really nicely for a truly epic sound.
9. All The World Is Mad
My favorite Thrice album opener, with good reason. The song just sounds really cool, it's energetic yet not too fast paced, and yet again the chorus is marvelous. Heck, most Thrice songs have amazing choruses, I should just stop mentioning how great they are. The acoustic guitar interlude after the 2nd chorus leading into the bridge has the be the best part though, it's a neat little interlude with great build-up into the epic-sounding bridge. The ending is also really rockin' (not something I say about anything often) and a perfect way to end the song. This song definitely tells you what you should expect on the rest of the album, and it only has good things to say.
8 to go ;) Some of my *weird* choices will be showing up soon.
-
Glad to see The Great Exchange getting love. :tup
-
I'm starting to like The Great Exchange a lot more (along with everything on the second half of Beggars).
-
Yay! A recruit!

The Thrice crusade will live forever.

I'm kinda sad to not see Digging My Own Grave anywhere else here.
It's by far one of my favorites.

It's by far one of my favorites.
It's not in my top 20, but maybe top 30.
I agree it is a great song, and definitely underrated.
-
It's a pretty good song but it's hard to put it on my top 20 because Thrice has a LOT of really good songs.
-
Oh, and when we're done all the top 20s, we gotta start singing the songs again, like we did in the survivors.
Good times.
-
So I think Beggars is slowly overcoming Vheissu as my favorite Thrice album. It's not quite there yet, but it's getting close.
All of the lyrics on Beggars are incredible.
-

That would be fun, but it's just to waste time. :P
I still have work to do, and that distracted me to no end.
-
8. Lost Continent
A very haunting song. This song has amazing atmosphere and amazing lyrics. This is one of the darkest Thrice songs I can think of... Kensrue's vocal performance fits the song's mood perfectly. The piano in this song is probably what really makes this song memorable... it provides the main atmosphere and closes the song off perfectly... there's not much to say about this song except that it's a great song.
7. Red Sky
What a way to close the album. This song is all kinds of epic - the chorus and the outro especially. It's a great way to close an already incredible album. Yet again the lyrics are amazing. The last section before the instrumental outro is probably the best part of the song - how could you not like that last "WE'LL RAISE AN EMPIRE... FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SEEEEEAAAA!!!!!" The guitar in this song is probably my favorite off the whole album as well, it just works so well. The outro lead especially is complex yet it sounds so cool. I just really love this song. I think I should stop writing descriptions for these songs now because I won't be able to put my feelings into words anymore .-.
So people don't seem to care about my list? Nobody's responding to it at all :(
-
No one pays attention to the emo kids that listen to Thrice

Alchemy Index is still what got me hooked. The sheer scope and variation of it is mindblowing. Still my favorite.

Aye. Nothing beats the Whaler for sheer perfection (as far as Thrice goes)
-
Just about, although the album has a lot of their greatest work.

Yep. Me too.
I find Thrice gets better with every album. Each one is more complete and deeper than the last.

6. For Miles
I love the guitar in this song. It's not that fast, it's not that technical, but it just sounds really cool. This song is also pretty unique in that it constantly evolves - at first it's just the piano, then the vocals come in, then the drums, followed by the guitar finally entering in the chorus. After that there's the epic verse 2 which is lot a heavier than anything before it in the song, then the 2nd chorus which is much "louder" than the first. The only point where it dies down is the bridge following, but that makes the outro come in even heavier. The drums in this song are also really cool IMO. It's just a really well written song with some of my favorite guitar work from Thrice.
5. Child of Dust
Ah yes, the super-minimalistic song. This song is all about the atmosphere, and it all works so perfectly. The vocal performance is absolutely STUNNING, the lyrics are beautiful... never before has a 2 minute song left such an impact like this one does. There's just nothing I can say to describe how amazing this song is.
BONUS!!!!!
21. The Earth Will Shake
This song just BARELY didn't make the list. It's still a great song, what with the acoustic intro exploding into a riff that sounds heavier than it really is... how did they do that? Kensrue's growls in the chorus and outro are some of the best growls I've ever heard, and Thrice isn't normally a growling band even! The chant section is pretty cool and it builds up really well into the heavy chorus. Oh yeah and did I mention how epic the outro is? Because it is. Still just barely missed the list though.
-
Child Of Dust is pretty good, but Im under the impression that Im not getting the same vibe from it as everyone else is. I dunno; it just never blew me away like most people.
Still, great song.
-
It's one of those "You get it or you don't get it" type songs. Not everybody is going to love it :(
-
It's one of those "You get it or you don't get it" type songs. Not everybody is going to love it :(
I dig Child of Dust. The vocals win it over for me.
Also, I like the Earth Will Shake, but the repeating lyrics don't do much for me.
-
4. Daedalus
This was the first Thrice song I ever heard, about a year ago. Someone mentioned something about the band somewhere (I don't remember where, it wasn't this site) and so I searched the band name on YouTube and this was the song that came up. So I listened to it. Then the next day I bought the entire Alchemy Index :P
That aside, this song is amazing. The guitar lines in the intro are some of my favorite Thrice guitar works. Kensrue's vocal performance on this song is amazing, especially in the choruses and the distorted vocal section at the end. The "heavy" part in the last 1 or 2 minutes is pretty awesome and somehow they can make it sound so much heavier than it is (heck, the guitar and bass are incredibly mellow the whole time - the drums are providing that awesome loud sound with the crash cymbal.) Anyways, this is a song I enjoy completely from beginning to end, definitely deserving of this spot.
-
Nice. That used to be favorite song, though after discovering other albums and songs, it's fallen a bit.
-

This.
But it's still great!
-
Nice. That used to be favorite song, though after discovering other albums and songs, it's fallen a bit.
It used to be my favorite Thrice song when I only had the Alchemy Index (and it's not my favorite Alchemy Index song anymore, hint hint) and it's still awesome but Thrice has a lot of REALLY REALLY good songs so #4 was the highest I could rank it.
Also, only one more *normal* song on my list.
EDIT: Y'know how I said my top 2 weren't featured on any list yet? My #3 is also not on any list yet... which is weird because I thought a lot of people like it a lot :-\
-
3. Beggars
Title track at #3? That's lame, Parama, you fail LOLOLOL. But honestly, this song is just pure win. The two mellow verses are great, with a great performance by Kensrue and somber and slow chords from the guitar that add to the atmosphere really nicely. Lyrics are wonderful as well. The song really picks up for the heavier bridge, with probably my favorite vocal moment on the album next to In Exile's outro. There's nothing too complex about the song but it works so perfectly. The near silent final verse is a perfect way to close the album... but the outro is an EVEN better way. Another great instrumental outro, which is not quite as great as Circles' but just as epic and a great way to end an awesome album (and that album's presence in my top 20 as well - this is my #1 Beggars song.)
-
12. Digging My Own Grave
A cool little tune, it has a very cool style to it. It has a very old style feel to it which makes the song really awesome. It has a real basic structure and just feels natural.
11. The Flame Deluge
What a monster of a track, it is so unrelenting, and it perfectly sums up the fire feel. The lyrics fit the theme and add to the atmosphere of the song. One of their heaviest songs that ends the Fire disc in a amazing way.
10. Deadalus
This song certainly gets a lot of jerking off in the fan base around here, and it deserves most of it. It is one of the more unique songs I have ever heard, and the emotional delivery by Dustin makes the ending haunting. The guitar work in the song is also very cool, adding a lot of style to the song.
-
1. you spelled Daedalus wrong
2. the other two songs in that post are also great songs
-
Ugh. I don't like The Flame Deluge.

It fits on Fire better than it fits on any of the other discs, though.
-
Well, obviously. But it still feels out of place. It's not really a good style for Thrice. Not that I don't respect the effort of putting that kind of style on the record.
-
2. Between The End And Where We Lie
Every drum beat in this song is really cool. The vocal style covers many different styles (everything Thrice except the growls). Guitar riffs/lines are great, even though the presence of guitar in this song is minimal compared to most songs on the album. This song is also quite proggy, both with the time signature changes and the fusion of electronic with a modern rock sound. Now that all the technical stuff is over with, yes, this is my #2 Thrice song. It was actually #1 for a while even. I love everything about this song, I have no complaints, this song completely satisfies me every time I listen to it. It's just a great tune that happens to contain my favorite drum beat ever.
DTF sucks. Why did you vote it out so early? :tdwn
-
Don't look at me. If it was my choice, it would be in right now. It's probably my 4th favourite on Vheissu, behind Image, Music Box, and Atlantic. I just like it a lot.
-
I'm going to make you all guess my #1 kk. This should be fun.

This is never going to end ::)
Someone could've easily come to the logical conclusion by now (the hints are already put in place) but I guess I'm going to have to mention the fact that I've already hinted at it a few times before anybody gets it.

Then it has to be one of these:
Like Moths to Flame

Stand and Feel Your Worth
Kings Upon the Main
As the Crow Flies

Not necessarily ::)
C'mon guys, it's SO obvious I can't even describe how obvious it is.

Apparently I'm missing something then.

Its probably You Not Me.
He's just been shittin us this whole time.

1. You Not Me
Obviously I think Thrice is a terrible band, why would I ever listen to this crap? Even one of the worst DT songs is better than anything they've ever done, so I'm ranking this as #1. I wish Kensrue would stop singing forever, he can't do anything right. Every Thrice song goes on for too long, even a 3 second Thrice song would be too long. Thrice sucks, DT for life :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

so yeah when you guess the real song I'll give you a cookie to go along with the description.

Enough of the torture.
I want to start singing...

um no
Okay, I'm going to give you a big hint. The last time I said that none of my top 3 had been mentioned, it was true. It's not true anymore.
Also I'm leaving for the night now, bye ;D

Lol, we give up.

Lifts my soul, free and so unafraid

1. The Flame Deluge
This song is too epic for me to not put it as #1. I mean, c'mon, that intro melody? The drums? The keyboard in the background? How can you not love this song? It's so different for Thrice but it works so well. I'm usually not one for growling vocals but these are some of the best growls I've ever heard. I just cannot get enough of this song, in it's psuedo-heaviness + epicness. I don't care if you don't understand why I love it so much, I doubt anyone could. This song is just perfection, and a perfect way to close the Fire disc as well. It's my #1, and I doubt that'll change anytime soon.
now let us continue singing starting with a new song that I am now currently listing to
WE'RE MORE THAN CARBON AND CHEMICALS

Yeah, I don't agree with that at all. Whatever.

WE ARE THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE
-
WE ARE LOST AND WE ARE
(Epic note) FOUND!
NO ONE TO STOP US TO
SLOW US DOWN!
-
WE ARE THE NAMED AND WE ARE KNOWN
WE KNOW THAT WE'LL NEVER WALK ALONE!
-
we're more than static and dial tone

Hmmm... Not working for me...
-
PAINT THE TARGET
WE DON'T NEED NO EVIDENCE!
-
FLOOD THE MARKET
WE DO IT ALL IN SELF DEFENSE!
-
YOU'RE A SMART KID
NEVER WORK WITHOUT YOUR GLOVES1
-
IF YOU'RE A SMART KID
YOU'LL STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM LOVE!
-
AND IF IT COMES TO MURDER
DON'T TELL AND WE WON'T...
-
ASK YOU HOW
YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT WHEN...
-
THE LIGHTS GO OUT
YOU'RE ALL ALONE
-
:lol
why does writting in all caps imply we're singing?
-
DON'T QUESTION OUR PARADIGMS
-
moving on....
I HEAR THE WAVES CRASH FAR BELOW
THE ROCKS ARE LEAPING FOR THE SKY
-
SEEMS LIKE FOREVER MY EYES HAVE BEEN DENIED...whoops wrong song
WAKE UP EVERYONE, IT'S NOT TO LATE!
-
Like Moths to Flame's outro is pretty cool, though the rest of the song is pretty boring. Discus.
Also, Poseidon needs to finish his list <.<
-
Man this thread got abandoned like a baby in a dumpster on prom night.
I actually like all of Like Moths to Flame.
-
I'll try to update my list today, just a lot of school stuff has got me tied up recently
-
In the meantime...
WE ARE SAINTS MADE OF PLASTER, OUR LAUGHTER IS CANNED.
-
We are demons that hide in the mirror
-
But the blood on our hands paints a picture exceedingly clear
-
We are brimming with cumbersome, murderous greed.
-
And malevolence deep and profound
-
We do unspeakable deeds, does our wickedness know any bounds?

Beggars is AMAZING.
One thing, All the World is Mad sounds a bit like Muse, but not bad, really freaking awesome.

I'm not saying like Never Enough sounds like Muse, but I hear some influence or similarity. Maybe it's just me.

Many who tell you they'll give you their love,
When they say give they mean take.
-
Hang round just like vultures till push comes to shove
Take flight when the earth starts to shake
-
Someone may say that they'll always be true
-
Slip out the door before the dawn
-
But I won't leave you hanging on
-
Another may stay till they find someone new
-
Then before you know they'll be gone
-
But I won't leave you hanging on
-
And come what may, I won’t abandon you or leave you behind
-
(you skipped a line!)
Because love is a loyalty sworn not a burden for a moment
-
(No I won't won't be that someone)
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side
-
I wont run away though the storm's getting worse and there's no end in sight
-
Some talk of destiny, others of fate
-
Soon they'll be saying goodbye
-
But I won’t leave you high and dry.
-
A ring don't mean nothing if you can't haul the weight
-
And some of them won’t even try,
-
But I wont leave you high and dry.
-
I won’t leave you wondering why.
-
And come what may, I won't abadon, or leave you behind
-
Because love is a loyalty sworn, not a burning for a moment
-
(is it burning or burden?)
Come what may, I will be standing right here by your side
-
(its burning)
I wont run away though the storm's getting worse and there's no end in sight
-
And storms will surely come
But true love is a choice you must make and your are the one
-
That I have set my heart to choose
As long as I live, I swear I’ll see this through.
-
I've heard good things about Thrice, so where to go but the Thrice Thread? I listened to a few of their songs (Image of the Invisible, Firebreather, Burn the Fleet, Daedalus, Music Box). Image and Burn I thought weren't so memorable, though the call-response bit in Image probably rocks live. Firebreather was interesting, probably grows on you. Music Box was incredible, wasn't expecting it. Daedalus was pretty good, had that pseudo-ballad feel to it. Perhaps I'm getting off on the wrong foot though. Any suggestions from anyone?
-
Listen to their entire discography in a row.
No seriously.
Go.
Now.
-
Check out Vheissu
-
There is not enough love for Paper Tigers, that song has enough force to crush a mountain.
-
Check out Vheissu
Yeah, Vheissu is a well-balanced album, and pretty much universially loved by all Thrice fans.
Beggars and The Alchemy Index are good to check out if you want to see what Thrice is about nowadays.
Otherwise, Space Invader had the right idea. Get it all.
-
Anyone else that thinks the intro to "Weight of Glory" sounds a bit Opeth-ish? :o
otherwise its just me, but it definitely reminds me of a Opeth-song

SEEING THRICE TODAY!!!!! :caffeine: :caffeine: :caffeine:
the setlist is changing from day to day, but it looks like it will be incredible
-
Lucky bastard.
-
Lucky bastard.
-
How was the concert, gwii?
-
The show was great. Having to watch Manchester Orchestra for over an hour was excruciating; that band is missing something. They have some good ideas, but the songwriting is atrocious.
Anyways, Thrice was awesome. The setlist was something like:
The Messenger
The Weight
Silhouette
In Exile
All the World Is Mad
Daedalus
Doublespeak
Atlantic
For Miles
A Song for Milly Michaelson
Of Dust and Nations
The Artist in the Ambulance
Circles
The Earth Will Shake
Beggars
There was a couple mishaps during the set. Teppei started playing the intro to For Miles when he was supposed to play Atlantic. Then when they were actually supposed to play For Miles, he had the wrong keyboard patch set and had to restart. Dustin messed up a few lyrics as well, but nothing too bad.
The crowd was kind of lame too. Barely anybody sang along at all, even in the parts that require crowd participation (TEWS, the beginnong of the second verse of TAITA, etc). There were lots of annoying people there trying to mosh at inappropriate times too, but that's pretty much inevitable at any concert these days.
Overall it was a great performance. Dustin pulls off all the vocals extremely well live. Everyone else was pretty much spot on. Go see them!
Favorite songs of the night were TAITA, The Earth Will Shake, Silhouette, and In Exile.
-
Sounds awesome.
If I was there, we'd be singing like mad.
-
If I was there, we'd be singing like mad.
For sure! I needed the DTF Thrice crew to back me up.
-
That setlist sounds amazing. I'm going to try to see them on June 26 when they come to Towson, MD.
-
That is indeed a great set list! Nothing off Earth or Water though?
I would LOOVEE to see For miles and Daedalus live!
-
What, no Deadbolt in the set? That's probably their best song live, so intense you can feel your soul being crushed.
-
Seriously. Thrice plays in Des Moines, but not Minneapolis? We're not that out of the way up here!
-
AND WATCH THE WITCHES BUURRRNNNNN
:metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Woohoo! Coming to Minneapolis afterall. June 11th. My first live Thrice experince.

Listening to Vheissu right now, liking what I'm hearing.

Listening to Vheissu right now, liking what I'm hearing.

Yeah, Vheissu is usually a good place to start.
-
I really need to stop saying I'm a big Thrice fan when I haven't given Vheissu a proper listen.
-
I really need to stop saying I'm a big Thrice fan when I haven't given Vheissu a proper listen.
Same here actually... I just love Beggars so much though.
-
Beggars, The Alchemy Index, and The Artist and the Ambulance are what I am familiar with. Identity Crisis and Vheissu are next to explore.
-
I really need to stop saying I'm a big Thrice fan when I haven't given Vheissu a proper listen.

:tup Good man. Beggars is my favourite of their albums. I feel very connected to that album.
@Jamesman - Don't forget about The Illusion of Safety. Some of the riffs on that album are just nut-crunchingly good.
-
Vhiessu is the best Thrice album IMO.
I only have the most recent 3 but it's my favorite of those 3.
-
For me it's a tossup between The Alchemy Index and Artist in the Ambulance.
-
Just listened to Beggars the whole way through and god damn it is awesome. What other Thrice should I check out?
-
Everything.
Really, just go backwards through their catalog.
-
So Artist In The Ambulance or that Four Elements thing first?
-
Alchemy Index first.
-
Alchemy Index first.
I have a feeling Orcus will love The Alchemy index.
-
I have a feeling any person that isn't a Nazi will love The Alchemy Index.
-
I have a feeling any person that isn't a Nazi will love Thrice.
FTFY
-
Listening to Alchemy Index and let's see how you guys think this would work for a concert opener (based on my limited knowledge of Thrice songs):
Digging My Own Grave -> All The World Is Mad
For some reason when I was listening to DMOG all I could think of that ATWIM right after it. Dunno why.
-
To me The Earth isn't Humming needs to come after Digging My Own Grave, just because that's how I've always listened to it. As a concert opener, however, I think it would work pretty well actually. Kind of a weird combo, but it works.
-
I decided to check out the Alchemy Index again. I've only listened to the first half so far, and here are my thoughts:
-I'm not big on their hardcore style on "Fire"
-"Water" is freaking awesome.
I remember checking out one of their earlier albums because of this forum and not really getting it, but the Alchemy Index sounds like one of those quirky, pretentious things I would like, so I'll listen to Air and Earth today.
-
Air (particularly Daedalus) and Earth are amazing :tup
I haven't listened to those albums in so long... I really should.
-
-I'm not big on their hardcore style on "Fire"
I'm going to murder you so hard you'll be dead.
-
What if I told you the heavy part at the end of "Broken Lungs" was better?
EDIT: I think "Air and "Water" are my favorites. "Earth is cool too.
-
Gotta say that im loving The Alchemy Index Volume I & II right now. :)
Before this i loved Beggars, and thought Vheissu was good, but The Alchemy Index is just pure awesomeness.
Vheissu might grow on me more when i've worked myself backwards in the disco some more.
Love how the Fire-cd sounds so different from the Water-cd, and even though i havent heard Volume III & IV yet, i can imagine that Earth and Air sound different as well.
:hefdaddy
-
What if I told you the heavy part at the end of "Broken Lungs" was better?
I'd agree with you partially, but then read this:
EDIT: I think "Air and "Water" are my favorites. "Earth is cool too.
And go back to having to kill you. Earth is the best them.
-
The Alchemy Index will always be my favorite Thrice album....listening to the full album ALWAYS blows my mind, it's too great......it shows what other bands need to do: EXPERIMENT!
-
I bought The Alchemy Index (vol. 1-4) like 4-5 days ago and I'm simply blown away. I find it hard to listen to something else than Thrice right now. I believe The Artist in the Ambulance is the next logical step?
-
I'd say TAITA or Beggars, then the one you don't get, then Vheissu, then go to their first two.
-
OK, will do! :tup
-
Yeah, their first two should be the last ones you pick up. Unless you thought Fire was not rough enough for you...
-
Yeah, their first two should be the last ones you pick up. Unless you thought Fire was not rough enough for you...
Well, I love each and every volumes of The Alchemy Index dearly. They are covering many styles of music and they do it so well it's amazing. So yeah, I wouldn't mind heavier-than-Fire Thrice but I can appreciate the many other aspects of their music as well.
-
I LOVE THIS CITY
BUT I'VE SET AND NUMBERED ITS DAYS
I LOVE THIS CITY
ENOUGH THAT I'LL SET IT ABLAZE

Well, Artist is where they become true geniuses. Illusion is a great album mainly for it's nut-crunchingly great riffs. Identity Crisis is less interesting, and should be looked at last.

Epic outro. THAT SONG.
-
So I just finished my second listen of The Artist in the Ambulance. And while it is a very good record, it is nowhere near the awesomeness of The Alchemy Index IMO. I really like the diversity of their late work and I feel like that is missing from their early output. I'll have to get Beggars soon though. (too many albums to buy OMG!!)

I wasn't blown away by The Artist the first few listen throughs either. But, each song gradually began to grow on me.
Now I think its second only to Beggars for me.
-
Yeah I listened to it more tonight and I appreciate it more already! I think I expected an "The Alchemy" part II.
-
Artist in the Ambulance came out way before The Alchemy Index.
-
I think he was talking about Beggars.
-
I'll have to get Beggars soon though.
-
Artist in the Ambulance came out way before The Alchemy Index.
Yeah I know that. What I meant is that I kind of expected to hear all of the influences that were on "The Alchemy Index"...like the electronic beats, the folk-rock, the acoustic stuff etc etc.
-
Listened to the Alchemy Index again. "Fire" clicked pretty easily this time. :tup Gonna need to check out another album at some point.
-
Just started getting into them recently. I only have the two Alchemy Index albums. I really like Vols. III & IV right now.
-
WHERE HAVE THIS BAND BEEN ALL MY LIFE.
So I listened to Beggars while on holiday, in the right mood I really liked it but at others I thought eh.
Heard some Vheissu, pretty much the same.
Put on The Alchemy Index today. Fire was pretty :metal but then Water came on. :omg: I'm completely floored. Amazing. I can't wait to get to know these guy's material fully.
I just can't understand why I havent heard about them sooner.
-
:tup
Get Air and Earth a listen now!!
-
All of their stuff is fantastic. They get better with every listen, and you can't get bored of them.
-
I have no ideas which EP is my favourite, they are all so awesome, and when i'm in a particular mood I just put on the relevant EP!
-
Come All You Weary :heart

If there's one thing I know
In this life, we are beggars, all

I can't get enough of The Alchemy Index. Digital Sea's chorus is one of the best things I've ever heard.
-

It truly is amazing! :tup When I first bought it I was listening to it twice a day for like a week. (OR MAYBE THRICE A DAY GET IT? OLOLOL)

I laughed at that and then immediately scolded myself. :lol
This will probably be what I do with it too, it's so addictive. Lots of short songs can be a nice break.
-
Thrice is great, though im only familiar with Beggars, The Alchemy Index Volume I & II, Vheissu and a couple other songs, found on the live-album.
One thing i like is that at first, some of their songs sound slightly same-ish (but dont flame me yet!), because i really like how after a few listens, every song grows into different directions.
It's really fascinating discovering. :)

Definitely. I listen to Beggars, liking 5 songs loads now, it started with just the first song, then the title track, and more and more as I realised it wasn't samey at all :) It just takes so long to digest, plus I have too many albums of their now so it's a bit overbearing.

I suggest you to get the rest of The Alchemy Index! It's really good and different from the Vol I and II. Plus you get Daedalus! ;)
-
Yeah, i just listened to Volume III & IV, great stuff.
I think i prefer Earth slightly, but i've only heard it 1 time so.
I hear a lot of praise for Daedalus, but the 3-4 times i've heard it, it hasn't really made a huge impact.
Sure it's good, but maybe it will grow with time. ;)
-
Yeah, maybe. I think I didn't liked it that much at first too. When I read the lyrics I started to appreciate it more also...
-
They do seem like a grower band, but, bizarrely, I love them immediately at the minute, moreso than I have my other favourite 'grower' bands.
-
Yeah, I loved it right away too. But now there are songs I prefer, at first I loved everything!
-
This thread feels so weird now...
I remember when there were like 5 Thrice fans here. Now we have, like, 8 Thrice fans. O_o Its weird.
Welcome, though.
Watched House of Blues today. What a great DVD.
-
Beggars is their best song. Easily. I don't think my mind will ever change :hefdaddy
-
The Artist in the Ambulance is getting better with each listens :metal Beggars will be my next purchase!
-
Really enjoying all the Thrice love in this thread :).
Great music, great songwriting, brilliant lyrics!
Also, Vheissu is the best them!
-
Beggars is the best them for me, with Vheissu second.
-
Thrice :heart
The Alchemy Index :heart
Earth is probably my favorite, but it's all so damn good!
You understand how much variety the band has when you compare songs like Firebreather and Digging My Own Grave.
A question though, might sound like a newbie question, but i'll ask it anyway.
The themes on each of the EP's are quite clear, but i haven't quite grabbed Air yet.
Fire has that heavier-sound, Water has that oceanic-sound and Earth has that more ballady-sound, anyone that could enlighten me what Air has? :P
To me it doesn't sound AS typical as the other elements and the EP's, but don't get me wrong.. i love Air, and i love the lyrics it has.

Yeah, I had the same impression. I think the songs in Air have this eerie feeling, an almost ethereal vibe in some songs. It's more like a Wind element I believe. I wouldn't say that Earth have some "ballady-song" though, to me it's more like folk-rock, acoustic driven. But yeah, I definitely get what you're saying.
Also: Thrice and Ulver are really becoming Top 5 bands for me. It's almost overwhelming to have discover both at the same time! :P
-
It sounds quite reverby and spacey to me, but in a different way to the water EP.
-

Folk-rock/acoustic sounds better, probably my favorite EP from The Alchemy Index. :)
Ulver is another fantastic band, both these bands are in my top10 bands/artists for sure.

The Artist in the Ambulance must be an amazing song live :hefdaddy
-
The Artist in the Ambulance must be an amazing song live :hefdaddy
Yes it was, but The Earth Will Shake trumps all.
It's amazing how awesome every Thrice concert is. Nearly everyone of their songs is amazing, so there are no bad setlists.
-
Digital Sea has one of my favourite choruses ever.
-
Okey, any love here for 'Digging My Own Grave'?
It's such a beautiful tune, and so different. (even though we all know Thrice = diverse)
The Alchemy Index is just awesome.
Favorite-songs from each EP:
Fire - Firebreather
Water - Night Diving
Air - Daedalus and A Song For Milly Michaelson
Earth - Moving Mountains and Digging My Own Grave
:D
-
Zantera and I have such similar music tastes it's scary. Those are my exact song choices as well.

I think milly michaelson is the only song on TAI that I don't love.
Come on you weary is soooo great, and the whaler's ending makes me feel like I could have an out of body experience :hefdaddy

It's AWESOME.
-
Yeah I dunno, I love their slow songs but it just seems a bit too simple. Give me a few more listens ;)
In the meantime, ALL THE WORLD IS MAAAD!
edit: new Thrice album details https://www.decoymusic.com/blog_posts/915
edit2: I want a 5.1 mix of the alchemy index done by Steven Wilson. Naow.
-
Wouldn't that change the sound of the album?
-
I have a hard time seeing SW's production style fit Thrice's music.
Also, I hate you Faemir for that link. Totally blue balled me.
-
Yeah it took me about halfway to start laughing. I'm surprised to see the color EPs are real, though. That seems overly ambitious.
-
Man, I thought I was listening to too much Thrice - like 3/4 album plays per day, no other bands.
So today I'm listening to Vheissu instead of beggars/TAI ;D
-

I looovee a Song for Milly Michaelson. That and Silver Wings capture the air element beautifully.

Why are thrice so unknown? I've seen little to nothing about them except in the last few weeks, and yet if you look at online reviews the overall professional and fan reception to all of their albums is consistently stellar.
-
They have quite a lot of listeners on LastFM, more than I expected at least.
-
OK, so Beggars is friggin incredible and I will kill then skullrape everyone that disagrees.
-
Just listened to all four volumes of The Alchemy Index for the first time. Totally mindblowing. So good.
I think Water was my favorite, but "Daedalus" is definitely the best song on all four albums.

Listening to the four volumes all together for the first was an incredible experience. The Alchemy Index is nothing short of a masterpiece.

I guess it's a good thing I agree then! :)
-
There is not enough love for Child of Dust, Thrice's most beautiful song.
-
It's hard ranking Thrice albums, but The Alchemy Index is easily my favorite, with Beggars coming up second.
Vheissu is also great, but i haven't really given it more then 3-4 spins.
Got many albums left to check out as well. :)
-
8. Music Box
Ha I can't think of any other band or song that uses the sound of a music box in the intro to a song.
OH YEAH? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wvYOV_IKH8 (is that even a music box? :P)
-
In a separate interview with MusicFashionMagazine, he also stated that the band might be "bringing back some more mathy elements" and drawing from their heavier influences, such as Botch.[51] A tentative release date in 2011 is anticipated for the new album.[52]
OH GAWD YES
-
Beggars was heavy enough for me, but whatever, it'll be awesome ;D

One thing that fascinates me about this band is the evolution of their sound. At The Artist In The Ambulance it's really "OMG music :caffeine: !!!" and it seems by the time The Alchemy Index rolled around it was like "Holy shit...we can write different styles, and well". I don't mean any of that in a bad way since I'm digging all the stuff I have by them a ton.
-
OK, so Beggars is friggin incredible and I will kill then skullrape everyone that disagrees.
Beggars is my favourite album of all time. It quite literally saved my life.
-
It has some un-fucking-believable songs on it, but overall it feels lacking in some way compared to Artist-Vheissu-TAI. Still a great album though.
-
In Exile just fully clicked for me.
A-fucking-mazing.
-
God dammit. This thread is making me want to listen to more Thrice and I've already listened to Vheissu, Beggars and both of The Alchemy Index CDs today.
-
I do really, really like Daedalus, but it still hasn't quite clicked to become 'OH MY GOD' amazing for me like it has for others here yet. It's very, very good though.
-
Yeah, I have listens where its WOAH and listens where its good. It'll get there eventually I guess.
edit: I'm listening to Vheissu, I've heard it once before. I've barely gotten my head around Beggars and TAI, I love Thrice :D
-
I'm on Like Moths To Flame. I'm loving Vheissu so much, but I don't know any of it yet, i'm going to need another 10 listens first.

I love that, the first listen of an album that you know will take loooads of listens to fully appreciate. Looking back on that first listen is always fun, I like seeing what my perception of the band was, and how wrong it was. :lol

Red Sky :hefdaddy
edit: Listening to Artist in the Ambulance now - it's worse than Vheissu/TAI/Beggars, but it's still goddamn awesome. Favourite is The abolition Of Man.

I thought the same thing at first...but I think it was more because I was surprised by the lack of diversity. It took me some listens and now I love it to death! :tupmore
-
Well I'm not much keen into post-hardcore, I already loved the title track, but it's just not as strong, their sound change was not just a sound change - you can tell they really pushed themselves musically.

It's funny because I said the same thing. And the title track was the only song from that album that I loved right away too. It's not my favorite Thrice album by any means, all I say is that maybe it'll grow on you.
-
Well I already love it, just not as much as the later albums :P

I had been going through a very lengthy depression, and by the time I had finished listening to the album I felt like my life had changed.
The Great Exchange in particular really reached me. I give full credit to that song, and it still is my favourite song of all time.

:heart :heart :heart Daedalus. :heart :heart :heart

Top 5 song ever material right there. :heart

That's pretty awesome. I actually started listening to the lyrics on the songs over the last listen and from what I could get from them there are some great topics they touch on on that album. The lyrics on "Beggars" are absolutely fantastic.

This.

"If you’d been raised in a palace, or live out in the streets,
Did you choose the place or the hour you’d be born?
Tell me what can you claim? Not a thing - not your name!"
Sooooo goooood.

I'm in love with the Water EP.

This is what I find most incredible about thrice. At first, I think: "Wow, this song is cool!". Then later, once I've heard it a few more times and know the lyrics, I realize that every song comes together as a perfect entity, and that the album is so much more than it is at first listen.
Take for example, the endings of each album. I never realized that the endings of the last songs are the same, but with different lyrics, until last week. So brilliant.
-
Does anyone know if there are 5.1 mixes of any Thrice albums, and if not, then why?

Oh man, Stand and Feel Your Worth just hit me like a ton of bricks this morning. So fucking good.

Okay, I've had the Alchemy Index for quite a while now but just got around to listening to it tonight.
Holy shit! Amazing, all of them. What now? (this was my first Thrice album)

Vheissu!
However, you can't go wrong with Beggars or The artist in the ambulance either.
-
Beggars next!
-
Vheissu!
I still need to buy this album.
-
Vheissu!
I still need to buy this album.
I think it's their best album. Mind you, I consider the alchemy index two separate albums.
Every song is great. For miles, the earth will shake, between the end and where we lie, music box, hold fast hope, of dust and nations, red sky.....oh man, NEED TO LISTEN TO VHEISSU!
-
I had constant shivers through Daedalus on my walk today, then i listened to Earth and I practically cried for come all you weary and child of dust.
I'm pretty much set for having come all your weary for my funeral song.
-
I'm surprised by the insane amount of love Daedalus gets.
Sure its one of their best songs, and would easily rank in my top5 thrice-songs, but overall i think the band´s catalog is insanely good, and Daedalus isn't miles better then everything else like some people make it sound. :P

Does Thrice have any other material similar to Water? I can't get over how good that Ep is.
-
Some of the stuff on Vheissu is similar.
-
Does Thrice have any other material similar to Water? I can't get over how good that Ep is.
Yeah, Atlantic, Between the End and Where We Lie, and For Miles off of Vheissu resemble that sound.
And Circles, In Exile, Wood & Wire, The Great Exchange, and Beggars are in that style as well.
Granted of all of those Atlantic is the closest to the "Water" sound, but the others share similar properties. Plus, they are all great songs.
-
Vheissu!

This.

I love still being in the 'getting into' stage with this band, it's lasted so long - the longest of any band. Vheissu is clicking atm, on track 5 and its been 5 tracks of gold :hat
-
I've been listening to Thrice for about two years now, and I don't think I've ever left the honeymoon phase with them.
-
Okay guys, I have the Alchemy Index and their Daytrotter session. Where should I go from here?
-
I'd probably say Beggars
-

Vheissu is the album that has the most "growers" for me. Songs like Like Moths to Flame and Atlantic took a while to grow on me, but they are really fantastic. Vheissu has a lot of staying power.
-
I'm at that point where the growers are just waiting for me since I keep wanting to play the same 12 excellent songs over and over again from various albums.
-
Have any of the new Thrice fans out there checked out Identity Crisis or The Illusion of Safety? If so, thoughts?
-
Not yet. I'm assuming they're raw and more like TAITA.
-
Not yet. I'm assuming they're raw and more like TAITA.
Yeah, but more post-hardcore than The Artist is.
One thing I love is the The Illusion of Safety has some nut-crunchingly terrific riffs. Particularly, Where Idols Once Stood has a great main riff.
-
One part I'm loving right now is the chain gang style singing in the middle of "The Earth Will Shake". Makes me wanna write a song just in that style.
I can't get enough of "A Song For Milly Michaelson" either. It's one of those songs that I'm jealous Dustin wrote it before I could. I'm sure everyone has had those moments with songs.

Amen to that. :tup Except that I could never write stuff like that! haha

"Image Of The Invisible" is one of the most energetic album openers I've ever heard. I can't get enough of it.

I want to hear that song live so bad.

Listened to Beggars. Only song that stood out to me immediately was Circles, but I'm sure they'll all grow on me massively before long.
-
Listened to Beggars. Only song that stood out to me immediately was Circles, but I'm sure they'll all grow on me massively before long.
Not even In Exile? It might be their best song.. :|
-
In Exile is awesome.
Circles is good, but i don't get why Dustin is trying to sound like Thom Yorke on it. :o
-
Where the hell are people getting this Thom Yorke vibe on Circles?
-
at first in exile stood out as one song i didnt like. But then i loved it. :metal
-
Where the hell are people getting this Thom Yorke vibe on Circles?
Because the vocal delivery and tone is incredibly similar to Yorke. I showed my friend the song without telling him what band it was and he immediately said "Is this Radiohead?".
-
My mum just said his intonation on Circles reminded her of the Coldplay guy's.
In other news, Digital Sea isn't my favourite Thrice song at the minute by any means, but it has one of the greatest choruses I have EVER HEARD. It's actually perfect, I wish it was used more than twice, but perhaps that's why I love it so much. I listened to the Fire EP while I was running and the Water EP while sitting in the park afterwards, and it was perfect.
-
Digital Sea's chorus live is even better.
-
I've haven't got too much into Beggars yet but I'm really liking All the World is Mad, In Exile, At the Last and Doublespeak so far.
-
That's what loads of people on the shoutbox said, but I love it because of the production so I don't see how that would work. I'll give it a listen now.
-
If Beggars were released on vinyl, I'd never play side two......the first half of the album is beyond amazing.
-

The second half has The Great Exchange and the title-track?
-
You know what, I prefer Digital Sea's chorus studio. Live's cool though.
But seriously, that chorus and the 'here my voice goes' outro have been stuck in my head all day.
-
Man, I wish we had this many people into Thrice when I was running the survivor.
Oh well, sometime next year when I decide to run it again, hopefully we'll have tons of participation.
-

But seriously, that chorus and the 'here my voice goes' outro have been stuck in my head all day.
The production is better studio sure, but the drums sound cooler when they are real.
-
That's the thing I definitely preferred, but the way the synth or whatever it is breaks in during the studio version is just perfect. I could listen to it looped forever really. A quick aside, does the chorus of Digital Sea remind anyone loosely of Gravity by A Perfect Circle?
-
Ordered The Artist in the Ambulance today. First class of course :hat
-
If Beggars were released on vinyl, I'd never play side two......the first half of the album is beyond amazing.
The second half has The Great Exchange and the title-track?
I don't like The Great Exchange, that's my least favorite song on the album. Title-track is epic, though.

My heart is filled with songs of forever
The city that endures when all is made new
I know I don't belong here, I'll never
Call this place my home, I'm just passing through

Daedalus live in the MySpace studio or whatever the one on YouTube is > studio.
-
Have any of the new Thrice fans out there checked out Identity Crisis or The Illusion of Safety? If so, thoughts?
Illusion of Safety is a pretty awesome album. It's got a few filler tracks, but for the most part nearly every song is solid. Identity Crisis is like Illusion, but a bit more filler, but it's got a ton of awesome songs like the title track, Phoenix Ignition, and T&C.
-
Okay, it took a while, but I now LOOOOOOVE Daedalus. I can't see how I wasn't affected by the 'OH GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDS!' until now, but it's clicked for me and I am happy. :heart

Also, Silver Wings' outro is lovely, and I mean that in a completely metro way.
-

I actually agree with this, the first 5 tracks are my favourite songs on the album. The remainder of the album is solid and the title track is great but I usually don't have the patience for the second half and listen to something else.

Okay, my Thrice journey began over the summer. I tried the Alchemy Index and Vheissu and didn't really care for them. Then, I gave the Alchemy Index another chance in early October. I checked out Beggars today. First half had great songs, second half was just okay until Beggars, which was great. Listening to Vheissu now. Why didn't anyone TELL me how awesome "Atlantic" was?
/generalramblingaboutaprettycoolband

Because they should have been telling you how great "The Earth Will Shake" is.

LOOK TO THE DAY
THE EARTH WILL SHAKE
THESE WEATHERED WALLS
WILL FALL AWAY
-
Harry was singing that in skype ALL THE TIME yesterday.
-
Also I call BS, skydivingninja.
I have been praising Atlantic from the get-go. It's on my top 20.
-
Your posts must've gotten lost in all the "Daedalus" smile.

I couldn't help it. It's just that damn awesome.

Listen to the Live at The House of Blues version when you get the chance.
That whole album is fantastic.
-
For some reason my laptop deleted the Alchemy Index(es) so I was without them on my Classic for a few days after my iPhone broke.
The balance has been restored, 7 days was enough for me to miss those albums. I don't think anything else from Thrice will beat it/them for me.
-
Listen to the Live at The House of Blues version when you get the chance.
Yeah, Darian was telling me that it's quite good live but I won't be making any more CD purchases right now..spent too much money. Will probably have to wait until the end of the month or something.

listen on spotify then noob.
-
Ugh. That means I have to install it and then have the mood broken by terrible adverts such as: "THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT: BLAH BLAH LOADS OF PEOPLE DIE ON COUNTRY ROADS BLAH BLAH".
-
then use grooveshark.
-
Are the EPs of Alchemy Index aside from Earth based on anything? I've pretty much figured out that Earth is narrated by Jesus but that's it.
-
Are the EPs of Alchemy Index aside from Earth based on anything? I've pretty much figured out that Earth is narrated by Jesus but that's it.
I'm not so sure...Maybe that's true for Moving Mountains and Come On You Weary, but for the rest...
And I think that Child of Dust is narrated by the Earth.
-
Digging My Own Grave fits the mold too. To me it sounds like Jesus atoning for his sin of sleeping with Mary Magdalene.
-
As far as I can tell, the other EPs are not "narrated" or based on anything aside from their elemental styles.
Even Earth is tied together very loosely. The Earth Isn't Humming is a cover, but I think the other 5 songs are all pulled directly from biblical passages.
-
A friend of mine showed me this band about 6 years ago when they were doing the whole hardcore thing and I hated it, but I'm really enjoying the new stuff. Cool beenz
-
At this rate we'll have all of DTF on Thrice :metal
-
The Alchemy Index is just fantastic... Earth is probably my favorite. ;)
-
OK so Thrice just overtook Unexpect as my most listen-to artist ever on last.fm!! :omg:
*appreciate*

At this rate we'll have all of DTF on Thrice :metal
:metal

The Whaler is still breathtaking :hefdaddy
-
The Whaler is still breathtaking :hefdaddy
Ay....but then again, so is the entire Alchemy Index album.... ;D
-
So...Earth is amazing. I thought it was good, but listening to it yesterday and today (OMG BOSKNUGGET) I've come to the conclusion that its just as amazing as Water and Air.
-
Yeah Fire I really can't get all the way into. "Firebreather" is incredible but the others... They've written way better hardcore songs.
-
Firebreather and The Arsonist are the only ones I really enjoy from Fire as well.
-
Water is awesome. Night Diving blowz mah mind all day and night.
-
I think Backdraft is very underrated. That song is probablu my favourite off of Fire.
-
Listening to Vheissu right now...This band is really incredible. :hefdaddy
-
I don't know. I really like Burn The Fleet but for the most part, I agree about Fire.
-
I think Fire is great, and i feel the same about Water.
A lot of people here praise Water, but personally i prefer both Air and Earth.
I'm pretty sure i posted this way back when i discovered the album, but favorites from each EP:
Fire - Firebreather and The Messenger
Water - Digital Sea and Night Diving
Air - Daedalus and A Song For Milly Michaelson
Earth - Digging My Own Grave and Moving Mountains
-
Fire-Firebreather and The Arsonist
Water-Digital Sea, Night Diving, and The Whaler
Air-Daedalus, A Song For Milly Michaelson, As the Crow Flies, Broken Lungs
Earth-Everything. Been thinking about it more and it really is the best EP, IMO.
-
If I were held at gunpoint to pick a favorite from each one, it'd be these. Otherwise, it's really, really hard.
Fire-The Messenger
Water-Digital Sea
Air-A Song For Milly Michaelson
Earth-Child of Dust
-
You people are crazy, Fire is fucking awesome, possibly my favorite (though it did take the longest to sink in).
-
Yeah, Fire is second to Earth for me. Really, only Burn the Fleet is the weaker song on Fire.
-
I just can't decide which one I like the most...
-
Music Box clicked with me earlier, it's an awesome song.
One of my favorites from Vheissu for sure. :tup
-
Favorites from each EP:
Fire - Everything
Water - Everything
Air - Everything
Earth - Everything
......favorite Thrice album by far, as you can tell :tup
-
Fire - Firebreather
Water - Lost Continent/The Whaler
Air - Daedalus
Earth - Come all you weary
-
Hmm
Fire - The Messenger
Water - Open Water
Air - Daedalus (ASFMM is also very good)
Earth - Digging My Own Grave
And Vheissu is just incredible after 4-5 listens...I cannot stress enough how this band is amazing. :hefdaddy
-
I gotta say that i find Daedalus to be slightly overrated.
Don't get me wrong, i enjoy it and find it to be a great track (especially the lyrics and the delivery), but i'm not sure if it would make my top10 Thrice-songs.
-
You guys are dumb, Silver Wings is the best song on Air.
-
And Vheissu is just incredible
It took the longest of the "recent" Thrice albums for me to sink it, but it really is incredible.
'Specially the Earth Will Shake.
-
I loved it from the second listen I'd say...such a wonderful record. Music Box, Atlantic, Red Sky, TIOTI, etc!
-
Magic Box
I'm going to allow you one more try to get that right.
-
wow :lol I can't believe I did that to my favorite song off this CD!
-
Of Dust and Nations :heart
-
Of Dust and Nations :heart
One of my top favorite Thrice songs, certainly my favorite from Vheissu. Wayyyy better live, too! :metal
-
Yeah I heard the live cd before vheissu :hefdaddy
(It's pronounced vee-sue, wtf)
-
How is the DVD?
-

Oh. I always wondered how it was pronounced. I always pronounced it "vee-uh-sue" in my head though...
-
How is the DVD?
House of Blues?
Incredible. Amazing set list, great performance, well recorded.
Couldn't ask for anything more.
Except for maybe Abolition of Man
-
Haven't seen the DVD, but I had the audio version on Zune Pass and it sounded great. Even The Messenger and Digital Sea sounded good, they had the prerecorded digital parts to start off the songs, I believe.
-
favorite song from each labum:
Illusion of Safety: Trust
TAitA: Don't Tell and We Won't Ask
Vheissu: For Miles
Fire: Firebreather :tard
Water: The Whaler
Air: Daedalus
Earth: The Lion and the Wolf
Beggars: lol
-
Does that mean that your fav from Beggars is obvious, or that you don't like the album?
-
Beggars: lol
I will rage if you're not saying every song is amazing.

You are weaker than their last three albums.
Well, everything ever is, really.

I prefer Vheissu and The Alchemy Index to Beggars too. But I still think it is a fantastic album.

You guys are iains.
TAI2 > Beggars > TAI1 > Vheissu.
-
TAI > Vheissu > TAITA > Beggars
-
To me The Alchemy Index is one album, and shouldn't be divided.
Even though i love Beggars, Vheissu has slightly more variety, and takes the small edge for me. :P

TAI > Vheissu > TAITA > Beggars
TAITA?
edit:
To me The Alchemy Index is one album, and shouldn't be divided.

But then no album will ever beat it, due to it's epic scale and breadth, and so I split it up for ranking reasons.

The Artist in the Ambulance

Sigz meant The Artist in the Ambulance. Also, I pretty much agree with his ranking and with what Zantera said.

It's so impossible for me to rate, but roughly:

Although for me Vheissu and Artist are so close that they're interchangeable.

They'll always be 4 EPs to me.

I'm the opposite lol. I refuse to look at them as EP's, but 4 discs that make up 1 giant epic album.
-
They're just so different, though they do have the last song thread going for them.
-

Totally. That means they did it right, because each element is completely different from one another. And since the music reflects the element, you have 4 different discs that join as 1.

And then you save the world when Milla Jovovich unleashes the Divine Light.

The lack of Beggars love is pretty disappointing around here.
But, I guess I'm pretty biased towards that album.

TAITI better than Beggas?

-
TAITI better than Beggas?
Easily.
As for Alchemy Index, it's kind of a weird situation. Most of the time I only listen to one of the EPs at a time, but I still always group them together. As far a rankings go it doesn't really matter, as each disc is so good that even individually they're still above the rest of Thrice's discography.
-
Vheissu heavy > Fire heavy.
-
On a song-by-song basis I might be inclined to agree (and that's a damned big might), but as an album Vheissu doesn't flow properly, despite the strength of it's individual songs.
-
No but we're comparing the heavy to the heavy, so you need to extract the Vheissu songs to start with, removing any sort of flow that it theoritically might have.
-
Vheissu have a great flow! ???
-

What? I said I might agree with that, but it doesn't matter when comparing the albums, which is what I was doing.
Vheissu have a great flow! ???
I don't know, I have a hard time listening to it without skipping around.
-
Nothing else I've heard from Thrice seems close to topping TAI yet, to be honest. I enjoy Beggars a lot, and Vheissu is interesting on my first listen, but TAI just seems way above those two and other tracks I've heard from other albums. Still, it's not fair to judge until I've heard their whole catalogue.
-
Keep listening to Vheissu, it's amazing.
And sorry Sigz, I misread what you said, covert DTF at work.
-

Definitely. It took a some time to sink in for me, but it's incredible.
And sorry Sigz, I misread what you said, covert DTF at work.
No worries :yarr
-
The second half of Vheissu is definitely my favourite though, Image of the Invisible might just be my least favourite on the album!
-
real good band
-
I love that song!
Early favorites right now are:
Image of the Invisible
The Earth Will Shake
Atlantic
Music Box
Of Dust and Nations
Red Sky
But every song is very good.
-
remove IotI and you have the best on the album.
-
What are you talking about? Image is the best song on the album. Incredible opener.
-
I wouldn't say best but it's still damn good.

nah.

The Messenger is the best on Fire, and Burn The Fleet is the weakest.
Amirite?

The Flame Deluge is the best them.

TFD is amazing and, to me, sounds like the definition of epic in the true sense of the word. To me, anyway. It has that epic feel of a city burning to the ground. Whether no one else sees that, it's still cool to get such imagery from a song like that.
-
Yeah, TFD gets second place from me, close call too.
Also found some great live videos of Beggars stuff:

"Firebreather"
"Digital Sea"

Yes. I was hoping the reverse opening tracks would continue but instead I got "Gimme Shelter", which still is an opening track just obviously not Thrice.

Go Thrice!
My brother bought me the Artist in the Ambulance cd the year it came out... I was 8. I loved it, but I had forgotten about them for a long time until I saw them mentioned on this thread... I hadn't realized they were THIS good! The Alchemy Index blew me away!

I have 986 plays on Thrice, and only got into them in early October. They are my 11th most played band on last.fm already.
Am I right?
-
I have like 500-600 plays with them on my lastfm, but i guess i don't listen to them as much as many others here. :P

I got into them about a week before you did and I have 1,087 and they are also my 11th most played band :neverusethis:
This doesn't include the insane amount of times I've listened to them on my MP3 player, of course.
-
Thrice is my 7th most played artist on Last.fm. But then again, I did just reset it a few months ago, so they'd probably be a bit lower.
-
Thrice is my #1 artist by plays, #5 by playtime.
-
So I got my hands on the Alchemy Index. I have to admit I'm not too fussed on Fire, Air and Earth, while the band are obviously very talented and diverse, I just don't like alot of the music here.
But Water :heart :heart :heart
Do they have any stuff like this on their other albums? Or is this the only time they experimented with the electronic sound?
Anyway, in light of that, is it worth me checking out any of their other albums?

TAI is the only album that they went all out on the experimentation, and no, there isn't that much electronic stuff any of their other albums. BUT, the other albums are all amazing. So yes, it's totally worth checking out their other ones.
-
-WTF you don't like Earth, Fire and Air
-Yes, there is some electronic influence on Vheissu
-Vheissu, TAITA and Beggars are all incredible

For miles is criminally under-rated and hold fast hope is amazing as well. List is incomplete without those.
-
Between The End And Where We Lie is easily the most underrated song on Vheissu. I never see people mention it and yet it's probably my second favourite on the album. The lyrics amaze me every time.
-
I'm not a big fan of the lyrics on Vheissu. I think it's obvious that it's about God and the whole ''Let's live our life in misery and suffering because when we'll die we'll go to heaven and only there we'll be happy'' is far from my lign of thinking. Music Box comes to mind; It's a great song but I don't feel like I can connect with the lyrics in any way. :-\
-
pfft, these are great lyrics https://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/thrice/betweentheendandwherewelie.html

This, except it's my favorite.

Red Sky wins slightly.

Nice to see more recognition for this one. It was one of my first favorites.
-
So, we have plenty of new faces now, which is very nice.
I'll be starting the Thrice survivor again in a few months. Hope to see the new fans there.
And please listen to Identity Crisis and Illusion of Safety! The more voters for the early albums the better.
-
Listened to TIOS yesterday, really great stuff going on there, though it still doesn't touch the later albums. Same with Identity Crisis. In Years to Come is an amazing song, though.
-
Bump- why doesn't Thrice get talked about more? They're awesome! This weekend I stumbled across Live at the House of Blues for only 8 bucks! :metal I still can't believe I got two discs worth of great music for that cheap! I only have Vheissu and The Alchemy Index thus far, so I'm looking forward to getting into some of the older tracks I'm not as familiar with. Any advice on which album I should pick up next? Can't decide between working backwards with Artist in the Ambulance or staying recent with Beggars. Also, I've managed to convert my wife into Thrice fandom with vols. 3 & 4 of Alchemy Index. She's a fan of Ben Harper and folky/gospely music like that and she really gets that vibe from the Earth section. Anyway, let's appreciate Thrice more!

Get Beggars now.
-
Hadn't seen this thread before - orcus introduced me to Thrice during my song roulette... and now they're one of my favourite bands! Beggars is a 10/10 masterpiece, The Alchemy Index is amazing, and Vheissu is also excellent. Gonna continue to check out their older stuff, but so far they seem to just be getting better and better!
-
Beggars it is then, thanks guys!
-
I used to think Water and Air were the best parts of the Alchemy Index. Then Earth clicked. Holy God. :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
Earth is incredible, that's been my favourite from the first listen! They're all great though. Fire has a couple of weaker tracks, but the good ones make up for them.
-
The Artist in the Ambulance is one of my favourite albums ever - 40 minutes of perfection.
Buy it asap.

Yea the entire Alchemy Index is just ridiculously good. I go through phases as to which EP is my favorite at the moment. I was all about Air when I first got it ( :hefdaddy Daedalus), and I've obsessed over each section equally. Right now I'm back on a Water kick, it's been on rotation in my car the last few weeks.
-
Thrice is one of the bands I've been meaning to check out during my quest to broaden my horizons. Recommendations plz.
-
The Alchemy Index, both sets.
-
Sounds good. Thanks. I've read some reviews on them, and they sound very interesting.
-
THEYRE AMAZING
-
Got Vheissu recently, been enjoying it as a sort of 'popcorn' listening album, ie not really a serious love, just casually enjoyable. Which it definitely is.
-
Give it time.
-
I love Thrice!
I'll keep my top twenty contained to one post and in alphabetical order:
The Arsonist
The Artist In The Ambulance
Beggars
Between The End And Where We Lie
Child of Dust
Cold Cash and Colder Hearts
Daedalus
Digital Sea
The Earth Will Shake
The Flame Deluge
Image of the Invisible
In Exile
The Melting Point of Wax
The Messenger
Moving Mountains
Music Box
Red Sky
The Sky Is Falling
The Weight
The Whaler
I haven't heard their first two albums, though, and I'm the least familiar with The Artist in the Ambulance. :(
-
When i first got into Thrice a couple of years ago, I heard an acoustic version of In Years to Come. So good. Anyone else hear it before? It's worth finding.
-
Give it time.
I dunno if that will help, I feel like every track's grown on me fully now. I don't dislike it at all, it's just not the near-masterpiece that The Alchemy Index is to me. The Earth Will Shake might be my favourite Thrice track other than Daedalus, though.
-

Was that from the AOL sessions? I remember they released a few acoustic songs right around the time that The Artist In the Ambulance came out.

Oh god the win of that song.
-
I know what you mean G, I think Vheissu is an excellent album but it doesn't as much impact on me as everything they've done since.
-
Just picked up the Red Sky EP. Damn, these two original songs are killer. Can't believe I've been missing out on these.
-
I found a Thrice LP while cleaning out a friend's storage unit, it's titled "Image Of The Invisible". It's in good condition, anybody want it?
It looks like this.

Well that was a long break from the forum. I'm surprised you made it a few hours.

Later.

I..... wat.
Anyway, I listened to Fire and Water of the Alchemy Index today. Soooo good :heart

Yes, I played those a few weeks ago, it was great to hear it again. Such a fantastic album
I might listen to Beggars today for all of my driving.

Very cool.
In other news, I've been listening to the Artist in the Ambulance a bunch lately. Its better than I thought it would be, except there are a few songs I'm not fond of ("Silhouette" instantly comes to mind) and I really can't get over how bad the beginning of the title track is.

Yeah. What's wrong with you, Matt?

I dunno. That beginning with the vocal melody and the very punk-style intro makes me wretch a bit. I do like the lyrics though, and the song gets massively better after it. Just not a fan of punk, and that song kinda crosses the line for me, just for a very short time and at the very beginning.

Been into Thrice lately. Though, is it strange if I like Ambulance more than Vheissu? I swear Ambulance is like one of my most spinned album ever. So fun from start to finish. Vheissu however, got a little boring after a while.

I agree somewhat. Vheissu definitely slows down near the end, and my first few times through I really couldn't remember the last 3 songs or so at all.
Artist is awesome though, and its not weird at all that you like it more. I do as well. The songs have more energy, and there really isn't a weak song on the album.

Huh? Why nope? I'm pretty sure I was far more familiar with the first half when I first listened to it. Doesn't mean I don't like the whole record, but the last few songs didn't hit me right away.

Let's play a little game.
Top 10 Thrice
You can only add one entry to the list per post, then you wait for someone else to post before you can add to it/change the list. Once the list has been filled, you can only switch two adjacent songs once per post. You can switch the 10th song out for another song.
I'll start the list...I don't have a favorite Thrice song actually, so:

Oh man now I really want to hear what this album sounds like.
-
OH SHIT
-
A brown blur, oh boy.
-
A brown blur, oh boy.
Can you not comprehend how deep and sophisticated this cover is?
-
OH SHIT
I can't tell if you did this on purpose. Either way, it's pretty funny :lol
-
A brown blur, oh boy.
It's not that the cover itself is exciting, it's that it's something totally different than any of their previous covers, which piques interest about the music.
-
It certainly brings back memories of seeing the original Beggars album for the first time, and just wondering how it would reflect their music. The cover seemed to be a very mature choice, and the music was as well.
I like this cover, but I'm not really sure how to define it...
-
Didn't they say this would be a return to their heavier sound?
-
Yeah according to Dustin it'll be a "mathier souding album".
I loved the direction they've been going in since Vheissu, but I'm ready to hear what sorts of heavy stuff they've been cooking up. I have complete faith that Thrice will hit another album out of the park.
-
Ooh, I like the mathy element that some bands pull off. Really cool element I'd like to hear Thrice utilize, should be very interesting.
At this point, I don't think Thrice can do any wrong.
-
Dustin is a genius.
He's also very calculated with his band decisions. He doesn't make huge drastic changes to the sound, but rather just evolves and matures his writing style. The music follows. He doesn't force anything, which is why I am very comfortable with where Thrice is going.
They have the ability to change up their sound, but their songs won't be dumbed-down or jarringly altered in a way that doesn't make sense. They've settled into a sweet spot, and they have a lot of freedom to just make wonderful music.
-
Yep. Agreed on all points.
-
I am going to call it right now that I will not like this album as much as Beggars.
I'm sure it will be amazing, but Beggars really meant something to me on a level greater than just music. Beggars is still the most important album of my life, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
-
How was it important to you? It sounds like it hit you while you were going through a rough time or something important/significant and the album was the perfect companion to it.
-

Yeah, I was pretty much at the end of my rope. I had been battling a depression for almost a half-dozen years at that point. All I wanted was to feel healthy again. I listened to Beggars for the first time in August of 2009, and it changed me.
I remember just feeling different after hearing the album. I don't know what it was. Just something about the lyrics, the music, the passion...something touched me. I felt like a part of me had been healed after hearing it. Once it was done, I felt like there was a light at the end of this long dark state I had been in.
Beggars saved my life.
Particularly The Great Exchange. That song still carries so much weight whenever I hear it. Just the message behind the song of basic human compassion and decency:
"Singing of a violent, tireless mystery.
That one would give his life to save his enemy."
More than anything, that line changed and saved my life.
-
Wow man. That is amazing stuff. Really glad that it literally helped save you from depression. I got chills down my spine reading that!
I find his lyrics to really help change the way I see things sometimes.
-
Yeah, just the whole thing inspired me to take action against my depression.
I consider myself mostly healed right now. Not for good, some scars will never go away. But, it was just the inspiration I needed to take care of myself again.
-
I can definitely see some of those lyrics bringing you to that point.
Dustin you awesome man you
-
Yeah, Major/Minor is really going to have me looking at Thrice in a different way.
-
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT.
-

-
Hmm. I like it. Will need to give it more listens for a proper judgment. very rocking. :metal
Nice track names as well. Can't fucking wait!

Awesome song. Words in the Water sounds like a really interesting song title.

The new song sounds great!

Nice titles! Also I'm not sure if I'll listen to that new song or not... maybe I'll wait for the album.

Dammit, I don't know if I'm going to be able to make it, all those shows are in the week and I'll already be missing uni the week after that for SW :sadpanda:
-
Yeah, I can't make it. I'm pretty disappointed.
-
Awwwwwwww yeah.
-
Doubt I could hit up the Richmond show, but it'd be amazing.
-
I've only heard Beggars and TAI but I might just go.
-
I could possibly make the one in Towson, but I'd have to drive home for the weekend which would really suck...
-
Where's dem European dates?
-
YES October 8th is a Saturday meaning I can go! OMG OMG OMG
-
Can't go :'(
-
I've only heard Beggars and TAI but I might just go.
-
Bummer, nothing closer than Boston to me and that's two hours away on a Tuesday. That's not going to happen. Thrice is the last of my favorite bands that I have yet to see live.
-
Guys, you really need to listen to Vheissu
-
Guys, you really need to listen to Vheissu
And The Artist in the Ambulance
-
I'll go to the Montreal show I think.
-
I've only heard Beggars and TAI but I might just go.
O' Brother just announced that their one of the opening bands. That pretty much sealed the deal!
I just got to see them open for The Dear Hunter and they're fantastic.
-
oh my dickfuck a Ft. Lauderdale date. I hope I'm back in the states by then so so much
-
In Chicago: Oct. 27th is Thrice, and Opeth is the next day :metal :metal :metal
-
October 1st? Cool beans. I think I might go.
-
Got NYC tickets :caffeine:
-
After unsuccessfully trying to get into Thrice with The Artist in the Ambulance and the Alchemy Index (flame away), I got Beggars and I'm enjoying every second of it. I've got two questions:
- Anyone have the Beggars vinyl? Does it sound as amazing as I'm imagining or is it not worth it?
- What should I go for next? Try Alchemy again or go for Vheissu?
Thanks homies
-
Try Alchemy again.
-
Try Alchemy again.
-
Try Alchemy again.
-
Everyone is telling you otherwise, but my suggestion would be to go to Vheissu, since it is my favorite album of theirs.

Is a "softpack" just a cardboard sleeve or something? I really hate those things.
-
Yeah that's how Beggars was, so I assume this is the same.
-
FUUUUUUU-
Those are stupid. At least do a fucking jewel case.

Jewel cases are so 90s.

I'm sure I'll end up getting it anyways, I just really don't like Cardboard sleaves unless it's a digibook

-
Bump!
So I've really been digging Vheissu lately and I'd like to get more from Thrice but I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions?
-
Progress in both directions from there but get Alchemy Index next.
-
The Alchemy Index.
-
I'm really liking that new song Promises. Wanted to see them live on this tour, but very, very sadly, they were playing the same exact night as Devin Townsend. It was a heart wrenching decision, but I'm gonna see Townsend.
-
I decided yesterday that the Alchemy Index is my favorite album of all time... if I can count it as one album.
-
Thrice has been the only band I've listened to since I got home from summer camp. I don't know why, but I just can't shake them. I'm loving every second of their music.
-
So I ordered Alchemy Index parts 1-4. This best be good.
-
:tup :tup

It is one of the most creatively-amazing albums of all time.....when you get it, sit down and play all 4 discs all the way through and you'll see.......

If you don't like The Alchemy Index you are an empty shell of a human being and not worthy of life.

Finally got Vheissu on CD, yay!

Loving the new song, bit more exciting than the last one (which was also really solid)!

Beggars vinyl arrived yesterday, will listen to it today. Hope it will sound as great as I'm hoping.

Great tune. Looking forward to the new album.

I swear you are like the coolest old person I know.

The last time I said that to an older person, they said "I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or an insult." :lol

So the albums came in the mail the other day and I've been listening to them. I approve. :tup

*Blushes* A great tune in any era deserves kudos. Music transcends.
Also BACK OFF ON THE OLD!!! :lol I'm not dead! :lol

Yeah, but you're like probably old enough to be my dad. :lol
EDIT: Also I heard that some people already have this. Hopefully I can get my hands on it soon then.

I just got the CDs.
-
Volume II is so amazing. Night Diving especially.
-
Yeah Alchemy Index is beyond ridiculously awesome, one of my favorite albums of all time! I'd have to say that the Water section is my favorite too if I had to pick one. Hard to pick a favorite track from it, I'm really into The Whaler right now though. I :heart Thrice and can't wait for the new album and the show at HOB Anaheim in front of the hometown crowd!
-
[spoiler]
This album is AWESOME
[/spoiler]
-
Interesting how people are saying they like Water the best, I would say I like that one the least and the rest of the 3 are practically equal. :lol
-
They're all amazing, Water is just the one I'm in to the most at the moment. I've gone through obsessions with all of them though. When I first got the album I thought Daedalus was about the best thing I'd ever heard.
-
I've been on a Thrice trip lately, and a few important things have happened to me:
1- Like I said I got the Beggars vinyl and it sounds incredible. I really like the liner notes from each band member for each song, it has made me appreciate this album even more...
2- ...and to finally propel Beggars into my top 10 albums ever, I watched some of its songs live at the Shock Sessions. What an amazing performance, I now want to see them live. Do they ever come Europe?
3- The Alchemy Index finally clicked. I decided not to start with Fire for once, and I've loved Water, Air and Earth (in that order) A LOT. Perhaps with a couple more spins Fire will click too.
-
Words in the Water = :heart :heart :heart :heart :heart
-
I can't make any kind of judgement until I hear the album in a non shitty vinyl rip
-
yeah the quality of the rip is pretty terrible but I can tell that the songs are good themselves. can't wait to get the CD
-
yeah the quality of the rip is pretty terrible but I can tell that the songs are good themselves. can't wait to get the CD
this, started listening and this is terrible quality
-
:yarr
thanks guys I think I'll wait a few weeks and get this when it comes out
-
First pass through and the new album sounds great. It played in kind of in the background, so I'm looking forward to giving it a good listen. Though with the crappy rip, I won't really get that until it's released.
-
OK... so listening to it a little more closely this time. This album is freaking awesome! Thrice just passed up The Dear Hunter as my favorite band.
-
This might be AOTY. I'll have to hear a decent rip before I say I enjoy it more than TCS though.
-
Finally got round to listening to The Alchemy Index, I really like it so far :)
-
TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH
-
yeah the quality of the rip is pretty terrible but I can tell that the songs are good themselves. can't wait to get the CD

Yeah, I listened to Yellowbelly then stopped cause I'd rather wait for a better quality rip or the CD.
Finally got round to listening to The Alchemy Index, I really like it so far :)
-
TOOK YOU LONG ENOUGH
I KNOW! I mean, I'd listened to the odd song ages ago but this is the first time I've sat down and go through all of The Alchemy Index properly. They're really good!
-
Still think the end of Daedalus is too emo? :P
-
They're really good!
THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN SAYING FOR THE LAST ETERNITY GAWD
-
Still think the end of Daedalus is too emo? :P
Yes but I still like it. OOOH GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWD!
They're really good!
THIS IS WHAT WE'VE BEEN SAYING FOR THE LAST ETERNITY GAWD
Well I wanted to discover it for myself rather than just take your word for it!!
-
too emo? wtf :lol
-
I know, right?
-
Oh come on it totally is!
-
No
-
Pffft.
-
No
-
People here fap so hard over Daedalus that it's not even fun.
Amazing song, but there are better ones.
-
Daedalus is a really good song. Not their best, but it's solid
-
I found a better rip, so I'll be playing this album all night. :caffeine:
-
Letters, I hear you like women and are not gay
-
I have no idea what you are talking about.

uhhhh what?

First official review I've seen.
-
4.2 average on Sputnik? That's legit.
I really love the album. Thrice definitely shot way up on my favorite bands list.
-
I take back what I said about Water, they're all great.
-
They're posting 1 new song by weekday until release!! :yarr
-
Listened to the new album today.
Good stuff. :hat
-
Words in the Water = song of the year
-
Words in the Water, Call it in the Air, Listen Through Me, Blur, and Anthology are some of the best songs Thrice have written.
-
I'm really excited about spinning the album for the second time tonight, Thrice has never been a "clicking on the first listen"-band for me, and that is what's so great about them.
At first I hear a solid band doing their thing, but when I go more into details, there's just so much awesomeness in there. :heart
-
Words in the Water, Call it in the Air, Listen Through Me, Blur, and Anthology are some of the best songs Thrice have written.
Add Promises to that and I agree.
-
Does anyone else find it incredible the string of fantastic albums Thrice have put out? The Artist in the Ambulance, Vheissu, The Alchemy Index (released as two albums essentially), Beggars and now Major/Minor have all been freaking fantastic and tremendously varied in their styles. They continue to blow me away every time I listen to them. Let's all take a moment to appreciate how incredibly talented this band really is.
-
*appreciates*

I've only listened to one song so far, and I picked Words in the Water. Wowzas.
-
That song is literally one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, ever. The lyrics are so good.
-

Seriously.
-
Well, listened to the album again today. The first half is finally starting to click with me. I like this album better than Beggars, that's for sure.
-
Listening to Paper Tigers right now...
Why can't he use this vocal style more often? It's amazing. I would probably like them a lot more if this type of vocal was more common. It's like...the most well-enunciated screaming I've ever heard.
-
Dustin's screaming is fucking awesome, especially on Vheissu and Fire.
edit: I'm not sure he can scream like that anymore, his voice has matured quite a bit since TAITA, he was only 22 when they recorded it.
-

I'm guessing he can't scream like that nowadays. But yeah, it is pretty awesome.
-
His screaming was really awesome, but I don't feel it would suit the music they make now, at least not an abundance of it.
Still loving Major/Minor, btw. Definite top 5 of the year.
-
Major/Minor just keeps growing on me, the album is SO good!
Quite possibly my AOTY so far, I've heard 60-65 albums or so from 2011, and while many of them has been really good, I haven't really found any album strong enough, that I felt would be AS good in a year or two.
Major/Minor however has the potential to maintain the awesomeness.
-
I FELT WHITE AND BLACK REVERSE
AND THE LIFTING OF A CURSE FROM MY HEART
:heart :heart :heart
-
Alright, I think I like Major/Minor more than Beggars now. I really didn't see that coming.
AOTY
-
So I'm gonna order Major/Minor but I'm not sure if I should get another Thrice album with it or another band. Should I go for Beggars after Major/Minor or another Thrice album?
-
THE ALCHEMY INDEX
-
VHEISSU
LISTEN TO MEEEEEE
-
I already have those 2 actually. :lol
-
...
THE ARTIST IN THE AMBULANCE
-
get them all
-
Alright, I think I like Major/Minor more than Beggars now. I really didn't see that coming.
AOTY
Same for me, I really like Beggars, but I feel like Major/Minor has some better individual songs, and more standout songs then Beggars had.
Favorites from the album right now: Call It In the Air, Words in the Water, Listen Through Me, Anthology
-
Holy shit we have the same favorite songs what is going on
-
Holy shit we have the same favorite songs what is going on
Love is going on. :heart
-
Yeah, same favorite songs here too. They're just the complete standouts of the album!
-
Add Blinded to that list as well.
-
Alright, I think I like Major/Minor more than Beggars now. I really didn't see that coming.
AOTY
:o
I am so friggin' excited about this album. :caffeine:

I take it you haven't heard it yet, but hopefully you'll love it as much as we do!
Without spoiling too much, personally I consider it to be more solid then Beggars, and a lot of variety similar to Vheissu.
All in all, one of my favorites this year. :hat
-
This album is really good, though I need more listens to really get it. I don't feel like it will top Beggars or TAI, but it's already right up there with them. Strong, strong album.
-
This album is definitely in my top 3 of the year so far, I love it so much.
-
I can see this being top 3 for me as well.
-

No homo.
-
So homo.
-
Uhhhhh OK! :biggrin: :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
-
:lol :lol
-
Yeah Ryan, Blinded is fantastic as well!
I still get blown away by this album each time I hear it, to me it doesn't have a single weak song, I used to consider Blur slightly weaker then the rest, but I don't anymore after it clicked.
I would also like to shine some light on Disarmed, such a beautiful closer. :heart
-
This album might overtake FtM in my top 3 for the year.
Also, Thrice album ranking time because why not?
Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
The Artist in the Ambulance
Vheissu
Beggars
But Beggars clicked for me fairly recently so really there are no bad albums in that bunch.
-
The Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
Vheissu
Beggars
Still have The Artist... and the earlier two to get into though. :D
-
M/M >= Beggars > Vheissu > TAI
-
M/M >= Beggars > Vheissu > TAI
It's like that for me too, except M/M which I haven't listened. Hopefully it will take the top spot for me as well.
-
For now I'd go with this order, but it definitely could change as I listen to Major/Minor more.
The Alchemy Index
Vheissu
Major/Minor
Beggars
The Artist in the Ambulance
I love every one of these albums. Funny how everyone just kind of forgets about their first two albums. :)
-
The Illusion of Safety is really awesome, I just don't rank it because it's significantly different :lol
also I haven't listened to it enough tbh
-
Been listening to The Alchemy Index a bit again lately, first time in a while.
Still as good as always, such a fantastic collection of 4 ep's.
Standout songs IMO:
Digging My Own Grave
The Whaler
Digital Sea
The Messenger
A Song For Milly Michaelson
Daedalus
These are just the current/overall favorites, I love the rest as well. :heart
-
The intro to The Messenger is amazing. Great list!
-
I thought about posting my favorites from each EP but I couldn't decide which one's I liked more.
-
Well MM is great, still digesting it but Promises and Anthology are both wow
-
now that you have been disarmed
WE WILL CROSS OVER UNHAAAARMED
-
Disarmed :heart :heart
-
My CD should arrive anytime now! :)
-
Bought the album today.
Listened this afternoon. Really dug it.
Listened again this evening. BLOODY AMAZING.

This album is so good.

Holy shit listened to it last night it's amazing. I remember Promises, Blinded, Call it in the Air, and Blur being out of this world but Words in the Water and Listen through me seemed to be the winners. I'm not sure where this album stands in my rankings but honestly, my only ranking when it comes to Thrice is tAI > everything else on a basis of 'one of the best creative, indulgent musical projects I've heard' to 'fricken awesome'.
-
Words in the Water has the greatest melody + lyric combination. It's literally the perfect Thrice song.
-
Can't wait to get home asnd listen to this in a good quality recording. I've been really loving the crappy vinyl rip, so it can only get better from here.
-
As much as I love M/M and Beggars, I really want them to go back to TAI style stuff. It doesnt have to be a big overblown concept ep tetralogy, but as much as I like the "raw, simple, band playing in a bedroom" feel of the two new albums (which are both amazing), it seems like their approach to writing on TAI simply allowed them to write more interesting/better stuff.
-
As much as I love M/M and Beggars, I really want them to go back to TAI style stuff.
I couldn't agree more. I just finished listening to M/m and yeah it was decent, but also it was very similar to Beggars. Now when Beggars came out, it was kind of refreshing to hear them do something different, but now I think I'm missing the older stuff. Not too much was really standing out upon the first listen, but maybe I'm speaking too soon though. I'm sure M/m will grow on me.

I think it will. It did for me, just as Beggars did.
-
Nice.. My CD is not even here yet..
-
I know M/M is great, I can tell, but it hasn't hit me yet. But, like Beggars, it wasn't immediate. This will probably be the same, especially since it feels like Beggars Pt. 2 (which is fine by me, Beggars is one of my favorite albums ever).
-
I agree that it sounds somewhat similar in style to Beggars. I too wouldn't mind going back to a sound more similar to TAI or Vheissu with the next album. Though M/M is freaking awesome.
-
This album sounds a lot more raw than Beggars did. I really don't see much comparison between the two.
-
FUCK still no new Thrice
-
Had I known the vinyl was going to be released before the CD I would have preordered that instead of the CD. Of course, that would mean preordering the vinyl, which I usually don't do until I've heard the album.
Well if future me could go back in time and slap past me in the face for something it would be either for throwing away perfect opportunities to ask girls out because I'm scared of destroying friendships or for not preordering the new Thrice on vinyl because it would have been worth every penny and then some.
-
So after 4 listens, I happy to say that M/m is growing on me quite nicely. :D
My 3 favorite tracks at the moment are:
Promises
Call it in the air
Anthology
-
My favorite three:
Words in the Water
Disarmed
Anthology
-
Words in the fucking Water
-
Disarmed is pretty underrated, such a good song!
I especially love the guitar-solo/part or whatever you want to call it, which is followed by the line "Now that you have been disarmed", that one is SO good.
-
Major/Minor is really fucking good.
But it's also the only Thrice album I've heard, so here's the classic question: What next?
But judging from the first few pages of the thread I'm going to get a very divided opinion.
-
It all depends, personally I'd say all their albums (except for Identity Crisis, only because I haven't heard it, so can't say yet) are pretty damn awesome.
If you really liked the sound on Major/Minor, then Beggars would be a good pick, because it doesn't sound THAT far from it sound-wise, maybe a bit more 'polished' in terms of sound, but a good mix of rockers and ballads.
The Alchemy Index is their big masterpiece IMO, not only because of the songs on it, but because of the whole concept and how good they managed to make it all, it's pretty much 4 EP's with each of them focusing on a different element, Fire, Water, Air and Earth, 6 songs on each that are all influenced by the EP's element.
It's hard to explain, but each EP is very unique sound-wise, and it holds a lot of variety.
Vheissu is another personal favorite of mine, it's a good combo of rockers and ballads, it has a very good balance of all the Thrice-elements, and a lot of people consider it their best.
The Artist in the Ambulance and The Illusion of Safety are also very good, but they have less ballads/melodic songs and a bit more focus on heavier/more rock songs, I'd say that The Illusion of Safety almost has some metal-riffs here and there, with more scream-ish vocals.
No matter where you go next, you have literally a SEA of great albums to check out. :tup
-
I'd just work backward in their catalogue from M/M.
-
I'd just work backward in their catalogue from M/M.
This might actually be a good idea. Either that or go straight to the Alchemy Index.
-
I'd just work backward in their catalogue from M/M.

No way. Firstly, Beggars is incredible. Secondly, it's reasonably similar to M/M, so if he loves M/M that much, he's likely to love Beggars as well.
Working backwards is a great idea. :tup
-
Yeah from what I've heard (which is post-Ambulance) their style has evolved pretty coherently album to album, so I think the most sensible thing to do is work backwards.
Also, Beggars went straight to my top 10 albums ever in a week or so, it's amazing.
-
So Thrice is pretty much amazing.
So far my favorite album is Vheissu but TAI has only received one full spin so far and I haven't even listened to the first three yet.
-
Boners in the Water
BC
-
Damn, my CD is still not here. :sadpanda:
-
FINALLY!!! :D
My CD + t-shirt is here! :tup
-
Hi Thread, I got interest.
I heard the first three songs from the new album and I kinda like it. I'm hungry for new bands. I knew about Thrice from here but I always thought it was another one of them bands DTF falls in love with even though the vocals are shit and those are plenty.
So should I continue with the new album or get something else?
-
Definitely continue with the new album. It's probably their best overall imo.
-

If Vheissu and The Alchemy Index didn't exist I'd probably agree with you.

Continue, and then work your way backwards. Worked for me.
-
Definitely continue with the new album. It's probably their best overall imo.
If Vheissu and The Alchemy Index didn't exist I'd probably agree with you.
The new album is definitely better than TAI (which I find overrated here), and probably better than Vheissu as well, but that's much closer.
-
TAI is untouchable imo.
-
I really really really don't get how anyone thinks that. There's plenty of amazing songs, but it's just not that great at all...
-

:| I just don't understand. Some days I find myself thinking that TAI is the best album by anybody, ever. The stylistic diversity and consistence of quality is pretty tough to beat for an album of that size (if you count all volumes as one album). There's 24 tracks, every 6 tracks the style shifts and every track ranges from great to amazing. Imo.
-
Some days I find myself thinking that TAI is the best album by anybody, ever.
Me too.
I picked up Dustin's solo album and am giving it a listen. Different than Thrice, but sounds good so far. Anyone else have this?
-
M/M just *fully* clicked for me.
Holy shit.
I'm getting shivers practically every song.
-
Don't listen to Ryan. He's bad at opinions.
-

Please Come Home? Great, great stuff. Pistol is an awesome love song.
-
Don't listen to Ryan. He's bad at opinions.
Hey my name's Ryan, and I'm the best at opinions.
-
zxlkho then :P
-
You're a wizard, Harry.
-
So what is people's favourite and least favourite on M/M?
Favourite is Promises, least favourite is Cataracts, though i'm sure it will change a lot.
-
Not sure if I can pick one favorite.
Right now I'm gonna have to say Disarmed.
But honorable mentions to Words in the Water, Blinded and Anthology.
-
Favorites: Anthology, Words in the Water
Least favorites: probably Blinded, but that was hard to pick
-
I'd probably go with Words in the Water as my favorite so far as well, but I've only had the album for a little over a week so it's still very early. I also really love the chorus in Blur.
-
I guess my favorite is Call it in the Air.
-
Been spinning this CD a lot recently and it's really growing on me, though I liked it right away. I can't make out what Disarmed is about though...
-
I think the tour started tonight (9/30). Well, even if it didn't, I feel like posting the setlist!
Yellow Belly
The Weight
Promises
All The World Is Mad
In Exile
Call It In The Air
Silhouette
Cold Cash And Colder Hearts
Treading Paper
Blur
The Whaler
Words In The Water
Cataracts
Firebreather
The Earth Will Shake
Anthology
Encore:
Phoenix Ignition
To Awake And Avenge The Dead
Pretty good, good chunk of new shit, love that they're playing words in the water, and phoenix ignition is a shocker. Downside: Only 1 song from Vheissu(???) Oh well, hope they play a good set in Chicago when I see them!
-
I know I'm a bit behind, but holy shit, this album is good.
-
I did some poking around on the interwebs and it looks like they've been sticking to that set thus far. Wouldn't mind a few changes as the tour goes on but that's a damn fine setlist that I'd be happy to get when I see them in L.A. on 11/8. I am excite! :metal
-
Vheissu might be my new favorite Thrice-album.
Just SOOOO good.
-

As of 10/4 there are 2 changes for the good, I think: They swapped Cataracts and The Whaler for Circles and Of Dust And Nations :metal
-
Oh my sweet jesus they're playing The Earth Will Shake.
-
I think they ALWAYS play "The Earth Will Shake." Makes me more sad that I can't see them this tour, esp. with Words In the Water, Cold Cash, The Weight, In Exile, Firebreather, Call it in the Air, and Anthology in the set.
-
I'm starting to think I might not be a Thrice fan :(
I love Beggars (top 10 album ever for me) and most of The Alchemy Index, but Vheissu and the new one are just OK for me. I'm not really a fan of his screamier vocals, what I love about Beggars is the softer vocal melodies and the calmer instrumentation.
I will give Vheissu and M/M a few more spins but I may have to settle for just Beggars and TAI
-
Interesting, for me it might be the other way around.
I really do like Beggars, which I don't think has a single bad song, but compared to the other Thrice-albums, I don't enjoy it nowhere near as much as I enjoy Vheissu, Major/Minor or The Alchemy Index.
-
Major/Minor is possibly my album of the year.
-
Major/Minor is definitely my album of the year (so far).
This.
-
Ok so check out this setlist from 10/5 in TX:
Yellow Belly
Silhouette
Cold Cash And Colder Hearts
Like Moths To Flame
Firebreather
The Messenger
Under A Killing Moon
The Weight
Stare At The Sun
The Artist In The Ambulance
Wood And Wire
The Whaler
Beggars
Daedalus
Encore:
Call It In The Air
Promises
T & C
Encore 2:
Red Sky
Treading Paper
Words In The Water
The Abolition Of Man
Encore 3:
The Earth Will Shake
If that set is right, then,
:omg: :omg: :omg: :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
Zack showed me this earlier. Holy fucktits that's an amazing set.
-
RIDICULOUS SET.
And yeah, pretty sure Major/Minor is my AOTY so far. The only real competition it has is Bon Iver and WU LYF, and I think it just has those beat.
-
I have Steven Wilson slightly above M/M, but it's close.
-
No way that's the right set. Too different from the earlier ones and it LITERALLY has all of my favorite songs. Too good to be true. :omg: :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
wait that is different from the one I saw earlier...
-
It has to be fake, I got it from setlist.fm......it's too good to be true.
-
Starting my first listen of TIOS on Spotify. We'll see how this goes considering how much I love TAITA
-
The Illusion of Safety is really good IMO.
-
On the fourth song right now and I'm kinda eh about it.
-
I believe it's considered one of the best pure post-hardcore albums out there. (from what I've seen from Sputnik's userbase and others)
-
I'm gonna try to give Vheissu another shot. I love IOTI but the rest just blends together for me. I know it'll click for me at some point though, I can feel it.
-
So I got the new album and so far Call It In the Air :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy
-
Goddamit this album doesn't get old, it's the first album since Lateralus (one of my favourite albums of all time) that I just listen to, in full, every day, and I don't see that changing soon.
-
I haven't spinned it in a couple of weeks, but it's really strong indeed.
I like it much more then Beggars.
-
I really think this is my AOTY, I was worried that it didn't have the staying power but I've already played it more times than albums that I've owned for much longer and I still love it.
Also, the chorus of Anthology is SO EMOTIONAL.
-
It's definitely one of my top 5 of the year, and in my top 50 albums ever, honestly. I love it.
Also, I absolutely love The Whaler.
Also also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RvvQhkP-Z4
-
I'm gonna try to give Vheissu another shot. I love IOTI but the rest just blends together for me. I know it'll click for me at some point though, I can feel it.
IOTI is one of my least favourite songs on Vheissu.
-
Yeah same.
IOTI is a great song, but there are songs I just love much more from Vheissu.
-
This album is so good. :hefdaddy
-
I've only listened to it twice, but I like it. I'm not sure what I like about it because I can't remember any song names or any bits from the songs, but it really is good. Easier to get into than Beggars, but just as good so far (if not better)
-
I really, really, really love Major/Minor so I reviewed it here: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/46036/Thrice-Major-Minor/ [/plug]
Almost certainly my album of the year at this point, and possibly in my top 50 albums ever already, too.
-
Awww shit, why not a 5?
-
To be honest it might move up to a five if it stays THIS GOOD for another few weeks, it's really not getting any worse and it's already one of my most played albums on LastFM. :lol
-
The new album is so good! :hefdaddy
-
I remember the first time I listened to it... I wasn't convinced at all. But it's growing on me day after day! It's a really fantastic album from start to finish, not a bad song on it. They done it again! :metal
-
But it's growing on me day after day!
AND NIGHT AFTER NIGHT
REPLAYING THE NEW DISC
DID YOU EVER LISTEN TO IT RIGHT?
OVER AND OVER

-
NYC show tonight. So pumped.
-
I want to see thrice live SO bad. Play Sheffield damn it!
-
So they played "Firebreather" followed immediately by "The Earth Will Shake". I'm pretty sure the girl in front of my is now carrying my seed.
-
You're soooo lucky. They came to Virginia a week ago but I had a cross country meet the same day. :(
-
The new album is totally making me re-analyze Beggars ( a record that I had basically overlooked)...upon further review I am finding it very enjoyable. The new album just slays.
-
So pumped for the show tomorrow in Boston! :caffeine:
-

Video for Promises!
-
sweet, i love promises!
-
The video is OK. Not a fan of those blurry effects as they get annoying quickly.
-
So there's this dude I know, ehs cool guy and doesn't afraid of anything yadda yadda and he's excite cuz he's seeing Thrice TONIGHT!!!! :metal :metal
Spoiler alert for anyone who didn't get the subtext above: he's me!!
-
Child of Dust is such an awesome song.
-
Child of Dust is such an awesome song.
Yup.
-
So they played "Firebreather" followed immediately by "The Earth Will Shake". I'm pretty sure the girl in front of my is now carrying my seed.
This!
Also for those that saw them on this tour, what'd you think of the opening acts? I missed Moving Mountains, caught the tail end of O'Brother's set- they were alright I guess, I could dig what they were trying to do but they were a little boring for my tastes. The tunes I heard didn't really go anywhere or do anything. But the more I think about it I really dug La Dispute. The music was awesome, and I really really dug the frontman's energy but I'm not sure how I feel about his talking/rapping/whatever vocal style. The screamy stuff during hardcore/heavy parts was awesome, but the way he talked or whatever over the mellow/trippy parts was kind of lame to me. Would have been nice to hear some vocal melody at those parts, but I still I think I may look into that band further.
All in all, awesome show!
-
Thrice had 3 opening acts?! (maybe I just misunderstood your post)
But if so, that's lame. :\
-
They did. Why's that lame? I like opening acts, good way to discover bands that you normally wouldn't hear about. It's hit and miss sure, but I've discovered a lot of good bands that way.
-
Oh, don't get me wrong, I like opening acts myself, but I think that one is probably "enough", I could probably do with two, but I figure that three would mean a shorter set by Thrice, for how long did they play?
If they only played 1 ½ hour or so, I would have preferred 30 more minutes by Thrice and one less opening band, if you catch my drift. :P
-
Yeah I figured that was what you were getting at, and I'm right there with ya :tup
Their set was only 1 1/2 hours long and I definitely wanted more, but it was awesome for what it was!
-
https://soundcloud.com/vagrantrecords/thrice-words-in-the-water-polaris
I'm not normally one for remixes but this was absolutely amazing.

That was pretty damn cool - especially the chorus, the strings in the background were gorgeous.
Still prefer the original, but then the original is riding high on my 'top songs of 2011' list.
-
Wow. that's great.
-
Really nice!
-
eh since I've been doing track-by-tracks on the other new stuff I got this year might as well do this one too and bump the thread in the process
Yellow Belly: Awesome opener. Chorus is my favorite part but it's all pretty awesome.
Promises: Great song, but ranks near the bottom for me. Just doesn't stand out on this particular album.
Blinded: Am I the only one that thinks this sounds somewhat similar to At the Last? It even has the same general theme to it... regardless, this song is still one of my favorites.
Cataracts: Eh... this one doesn't do that much for me. It actually feels a bit out of place.
Call it in the Air: Was my least favorite for a while, then I realized it was awesome. Not much else to say.
Treading Paper: One of the songs that caught my attention the most on early listens, still think it's pretty great but probably ranks in the middle now
Blur: I love this song. It's so concise, so loud, and just full of energy.
Words in the Water: I also love this song. Definitely the most "beautiful" song on the album (though just barely) plus those vocals hell yes thank you
Listen Through Me: This one always came off as being one of my least favorites until I realized that that's just because it doesn't compare to how good Words in the Water is, but is still really good on its own merits.
Anthology: The best song on the album. I mean... yeah, speaks for itself. I love this song. Dear god I love this song.
Disarmed: This one reminds me a lot of Red Sky... similar structure mostly. But anyways... also quite a beautiful song, second to Words in the Water. Great way to close the album (just like Red Sky was... what a coincidence! :U)
So overall this is definitely the most solid album I've gotten from this year and also ranks really high... seems like it'll stand the test of time, too, since I'm rather tired of the other two albums I got around the same time. May very well end up as my album of the year.
-
So, the only song I've ever heard by this band is For Miles; I heard it years and years ago and a friend of mine played it in the car tonight and... WOW. I came. The middle part where it's just the repeating guitar line and then he breaks into the screaming is amazing; we were just toking it up driving along this back road and the top was down, no one around, and we were doing about 110. It was like fornicating on a big titty. Anyway, I asked my friend where to start with this band and he completely overwhelmed me with his zealous speech about how fantastic every song and album is. :lol So I ask, this being the only song I've ever heard, what's the rest of their discography like? Are they diverse, or is their sound generally the same? I've heard about them from other friends and I think I might have caught a couple other songs on the radio, but only bits and pieces. But if they have the same power as they do with For Miles, I can see myself really getting into them.
-
For Miles is far from their best song... and their discography is overall pretty diverse. You really can't go wrong with any of their last 4-5 albums.
-
For Miles is awesome, one of my favorites from Vheissu for sure.
-

They released 4 EP's as an album title The Alchemy Index. Each EP represents a different element and the mood of each EP matches the element:
Fire: Heavy, volatile, sometimes unrelenting, feels like phaser effects in some places
Water: Digital at times, feeling of being submerged, a lot of reverb/delay to give it the ffect that you're in water listening to it
Air: Feels lighter and more confined with some good atmosphere, a lot tighter and much less distortion
Earth: Stripped down, more acoustic and piano, very raw sounding, as if they were becoming dirt (weird way to describe it, but it's really cool).
Each EP is 6 songs long. The last song of each EP uses the same melodies for the verses and the final outro verse, along with the same chords.
They really made something special with TAI, in my opinion. Really thorough and a lot of cool things and nuggets.
From there, I would recommend the Fire EP. This entire album takes a good amount of time to appreciate (I think) and catch what it is all about.

:sadpanda:
-
:(
Seeing as they only tour USA, it doesn't quite bother me as much, but the fact that we wont get new albums (for a while at least) makes me rather sad.
-
Sigh :(
-
Yeah, read this earlier. Fucking sucks though it makes sense why
-
Bumout :sadpanda:
What's this about an early 2012 tour though? Have any dates been announced yet? Sounds like it'll be a must-see.
-
I hope they hit Florida one more time. Just so I can see one of my favorite bands.
-
Rec me some songs to start with.
-
The Messenger
Digital Sea
Stare at the Sun
All the World is Mad
Yellow Belly
In Years to Come
Image of the Invisible
Moving Mountains
Daedalus
-
I would recommend:
Digging My Own Grave
A Song For Milly Michaelson
The Messenger
The Whaler
In Exile
Disarmed
For Miles
-
In Exile <3
I've performed that song on my acoustic before, had the whole crowd singing along with the whoa's at the end :metal
-
Thanks guys... checking out now....
-
'Tis a shame, but I'd prefer them to carry on part-time than push it and completely burn out. It sounds like we'll still get new Thrice music, just not as often, but that's fine.
-
Digging My Own Grave and Yellow Belly are the ones which blew my mind so far... closely followed by The Messenger....
still checking out....
Thanks again!
Edit: Thrice - For Miles :omg:
In Years to Come :tup
-
I understand that bands make most of their money touring, but I've never understood why bands in situations like this don't just say that they're going to continue making albums every couple of years, but won't be touring much in support of them for a while. Why stop everything?
Anyway... I guess I'll do everything reasonable to see them on the next leg of their tour if I can.
-
Looks like I'm going to need to see them on that tour then.
-
It's a damn shame. I discovered them such a short while ago too.
-
I'm glad I got to see them on this tour. It's a shame because you can tell they really love their fans, but family always should come first. Hoping they'll play New England on their last leg.

I could not even make a list. Their catalog is very consistent to the point where making a top 10 is impossible for me.

Words in the Water

That's... difficult.

Anthology

Nope, can't narrow it down more than that.

God, Anthology is good...
-
God, Anthology is good...
Indeed. I like the acoustic version better personally.
-
Anthology is amazing. I love the power in the studio version but the acoustic version is very pretty as well.
-
So I finally started with Thrice. Got The Alchemy Index (all 4). All I can way is Water, Air, and Earth are all amazing while I don't really like Fire at all. Don't know why.
-
Not even Firebreather, the best song on the album?
-
I like Fire but it's very easily my least favorite of the elements.
-
I would probably rank them: Earth > Air > Water > Fire myself, but I love them all.
-
Not even Firebreather, the best song on the album?
Both that song and Flame Deluge could lay good claim to that title.
-
Y'all bitches be crazy.
Fire>Water>Earth>Air
-
Water is my personal favorite. Not sure after that, though.
-
Earth > Air > Water > Fire
-
Water > Air > Earth > Fire
They are all amazing though. In fact, I have been listening to TAI exclusively all day.
-
So hard to rank them...

Earth
Fire
Water
Air

Water > Earth > Fire > Air.

Fire > Air > Water > Earth
mmhmm

Curious...let's rank the last 3 albums.
Beggars
TAI (so close to Beggars)
M/M
I love the new album, but I don't find it as special as the previous two. I think I am in the minority here, though.
-
The Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
Beggars
-
Beggars
The Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
Major/Minor is very good, but I feel that on Beggars every song was really special. On Major/Minor there are a lot of songs that kinda sound in the same vein, and don't really feel special at all. They're just good Thrice songs. Nothing wrong with that. I understand the grunge comment about the album.
-
TAI
Beggars
M/M
I'm sure that M/M might still grow on me though, but all three are astounding records.
-
The Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
Beggars
This
-
Standout track for now from Major/Minor would be Call it in the Air. That chorus is insane.
Warming up to Vheissu right now. I kinda dig the leftovers of their 'emo' and 'core' elements, whatever you think I might mean by that. I prefer their more mature style, but this album feels like a mix of their past and their new style. If anything, this album has a lot of energy, and it sounds terrific. Great stuff. The Earth Will Shake and For Miles are amazing.

Agreed. It hit me on the first listen. Also the beginning of Anthology, because it sounds fkin huge

Also agree on Call it in the Air. Powerful.

My exact ranking as well. All three are masterpieces though.
-
Still think the unison bends in the chorus of Anthology and the entirety of Words in the Water are up there with 'OH GOOOOOOODS' in terms of being Thrice's absolute best moments.
-
The Alchemy Index
Major/Minor
Beggars

These guys. They know what's up.

The Alchemy Index is awesome. Only discovered it a week ago, but it is amazing.

I just listened to Beggars right after M/M.
Yeah okay, M/M is better.
TAI is still supreme!
-
1. The alchemy index
2. Beggars
3. Major/Minor
For me, Beggars beats major/minor for having Circles alone. This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

I half agree, Circles is one of my top favorite Thrice songs....but, M/M beats it as a whole. And Words in the Water rivals Circles for me as well.....beautiful tune.

Damn, no Minnesota date.
-
Will be going to the Hartford show. The crowd at the last Thrice show made me feel so awkward though... half hardcore kids and half indie kids... and then me, just a skinny pale music nerd trying to get my Thrice on. :lol
This will be my third show in three days, all in Hartford.

vote for the setlist on the farewell tour:

come on Thrice, Words in the Water and Red Sky, please

I don't mean to dig up an old thread, but these guys are coming to North Carolina in a month and I figured that with all the love they get around here, I ought to ask you guys. I don't really know anything about Thrice, although in following all the top 50 album threads it seems that the Alchemy Index is a super popular album. Would you guys suggest I start here?

I would. I recommend the Alchemy Index to any fan of music. Amazing record, do it.
-
Alchemy index (3/4) first, then Alchemy (1/2).
-
Nah just listen to the entire thing in order, it's not that long.
-
Has it been released as one single collection?
-
Not that I know of, it's two separate releases.
-
Alright, well for the sake of convenience I just downloaded vol. 3 and 4 from itunes.
That was easy.... :-\ Have you guys seen them live before?

Not yet, but I will be seeing them on the Farewell tour
-
That was easy.... :-\ Have you guys seen them live before?
I have, they were really good. It could have been better with a different setlist since I wasn't as familiar with their earlier stuff at the time.
-
They are beyond amazing live.....both times I've seen them, they had no visual show, just a flat stage with 2 amps and the drumset, with just a few lights above them.....but they sound soooo good, one of the best-sounding live bands I've ever seen.
-
Well guys... After two days with the alchemy index vol 3 4, I am VERY pleased. I've been driving a lot the last couple days and have listened to the album about 8-10 times all the way through. I'm especially impressed with Broken Lungs, a song for MM, Daedalus, silver wings, digging my own grave, and come all you weary. Needless to say, they are all quality tracks, but I think I may prefer the sound of Air more at this point (both volumes are great in their own right). I'm finally getting all the praise for this group and probably will be buying volumes 1 2 soon (only delaying this so I can obsess over the other a little more)
Thank you DTF! :tup
-
So Dustin's dad died yesterday. Sad news, and wouldn't be surprised if some of the tour got cancelled/postponed.
-
Why? The tour doesn't start for three weeks.

I always listen The Alchemy Index as a whole!
-
I usually listen to the whole 'compilation' from start to finish as well. When I don't, I'm usually spinning the Water volume the most, followed by Air. It really is one of the best albums I've ever listened to by any band, let alone Thrice. Beautiful stuff on both albums, but Water is certainly my favorite.
Digital Sea + Open Water = :heart :heart :hat
-
I've never listened to it separately, always the whole thing.
-
One of my favorite bands. Haven't missed a show they've played in Dallas since 2007.
-
I've never listened to it separately, always the whole thing.
Accidentally or on purpose?

You got some truth going on there.

Well on purpose. I just think they all belong together, and if I listen to them together I get more of the variety-effect, instead of 6 songs following one "theme". :P
-
So Dustin's dad died yesterday. Sad news, and wouldn't be surprised if some of the tour got cancelled/postponed.
:(
I don't think the tour will be canceled though.
-
Why? The tour doesn't start for three weeks.
Less than two weeks. And this from a previous interview:
'Before Major/Minor there was some serious family stuff going on inside the band. Did that effect the process of making the new record at all?
Teppei: It was basically during just the writing time. It was a crazy couple of years after we finished Beggars. My mom passed away from cancer. She got diagnosed, then I think actually right before that (bassist and drummer) Eddie and Riley’s dad was diagnosed with cancer as well. He ended up passing away… several months ago. It hasn’t been a year yet. Then, (singer) Dustin’s dad was diagnosed with brain cancer pretty much in the middle of the tour. We were on tour with Manchester Orchestra and actually O Brother, who we’re playing with on this tour. It was an all-of-the-sudden thing. We had to cancel the tour and he had to fly home. So that was that. So, yeah… it’s been a really crazy couple of years in terms of that kind of stuff. It didn’t really… effect the writing too much it’s weird to say. Other than just timing. We would take a few months off here and there for whatever reasons'.
-
Fire needs more love.
This this. I mean the whole thing is like my favorite album ever, but fuckin a.
Also sorry to hear about Dustin's dad :sadpanda:
-
Bump!
Saw Thrice in orlando last night with O'Brother and Animals As Leaders opening for them. It was a stellar show and they did a few songs from every album including First Impressions. They closed with Beggars, T&C, and Anthem.
-
*Setlist spoiler maybe
It kind of breaks my heart that they are not playing Circles, but the rest of the setlist is pretty solid so that definitely makes up for it.
I'm seeing next week so I can't wait.
-
I'm really sad I can't see them tomorrow :(

LIKE A PHOENIX IGNITION

I'm really sad I can't see them tomorrow :(
I feel for you man. I had to miss them the last two times they came.
The first time I had a Calculus final the morning after the show
The second time the concert was on the same exact night that I was seeing Devin Townsend.

Dustin is doing a live acoustic thing and answering questions!
Now!
Go!

Can't wait for NYC tonight
-
I just saw them, almost a week ago now. They were quite good, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I wasn't very familiar with most of their older music. The only album I own right now is TAI. Definitely would have been better if I knew more of their stuff. On the bright side, I have some more new music that I have to get now.
-
So they played "Firebreather" followed immediately by "The Earth Will Shake". I'm pretty sure the girl in front of my is now carrying my seed.
Make that two girls.
-
Just got back from seeing them and its was pretty sweet.
The crowd was fucking insane. So glad I sat on the balcony and could just take in the madness.
and as a guy that pretty much only has Beggars, and alchemy index, I must say that some of their older stuff they played was mindblowingly incredible. I must explore those first couple albums.
Kind of wish they just had one opening band though. O' Brother was actually a pleasant surprise. The Thrice crowd was not digging Animals as leaders though, especially the girls. They didn't want none of it. :lol
-
Dude, get Vheissu and Artist in the Ambulance right meow.

Picked them up yesterday. They are totally different and totally sweet.

I found this remix of Words in the Water the other day on youtube. Personally, I think it's magnificent.

This way, it sounds like the song could've been in Water or Vheissu.

Were you able to see what kinda merch they had this time around? Both times I've seen them in the past, they've had crappy t shirt designs.... :tdwn
-
At the concert I went to a couple weeks ago, they had some pretty cool shirts. I wasn't able to buy any, but the designs were decent IMO
-
Been on an Alchemy Index binge lately, so I'll rank the elements:
Earth
Water
Air
Fire
-
1. Air
2. Earth
3. Water
4. Fire- I love Firebreather, but I feel like the rest of the album suffers from excessive rage and passion trying to be put to music and this is why I don't really listen to it that much. They certainly captured the feeling of fire, but from a musical perspective I would have preferred it if some more melodic elements were added to it during the development process. Its just kind of an overwhelming album.
-
Fire
Water
Air
Earth
Either that's my ranking or I'm too lazy to rank so I just listed them in the order they appear on the album- YOU DECIDE!!

Interesting, the crowd was pretty into it at my show, or maybe I was so into it to notice, but Dustin did say something very interesting before they played it. It was something like this.
Dustin: "you guys like the voting that we had for the songs, that's pretty much how we made the setlist. This next song, I was shocked to see that guys voted for it, but here we go"

As was I. The crowd at my show was very into the post-hardcore songs though, so I'm guessing it has more to do with the audience in question. Hardcore music is HUGE up here in MA (it is easily the dominant scene) so that could have something to do with it. It still won a spot in the set from the poll so it must be fairly well liked.
-
Just got back from the Chicago show..........WOW!!!! :omg: I saw the Beggars tour and the Major/Minor tour but this one blew it away!!! By far the best Thrice show I've seen so far.

I will buy this and weep every time I hear The Whaler.

Can't wait! They were amazing last tour

can't wait for the DVD.

What a news!!!
-
Fantastic news! :caffeine:
-
Wooohoooo!! Timing couldn't be better, I'm on a huge Thrice kick.
-
I'll be honest and say my interest in Thrice has been on a steady decline over the last 3-4 years. Not that they got worse or anything, I thought the last two albums were great, just the usual story of me changing as a person and some things not being as special anymore. But anyhow, if they were to re-unite and release an album, that would be cool. All you really need is a great album, and that energy/enthusiasm will come back. I think Dredg is a good example for me. Chuckles managed to not only kill off my interest in the band, but basically stop listening to them all together, mostly because it's hard for me to even listen to their good albums, without thinking about the horror that followed. But all they need is to make a good album, and it's easier to forget and move forward. And Thrice doesn't have that baggage. They went out on a pretty high note, and hopefully they return on one.
-
I've been impressed by everything up to and including beggars.
Beggars was a shift in direction, which I really liked and felt fresh. Major/minor didn't really do much for me though, since it just felt like a continuation of beggars, but didn't offer anything that really blew my mind.
So if they do make a new album, I hope they push themselves to try something new, or bring something new to the table.
-

This exactly. I love the band and am excited to hear this news, but Major/Minor is definitely lower-tier for me despite the fact that I still like it, it's just kinda there. Didn't wow me, don't dislike it. But this is good stuff, and what I want from them is that exactly. Fresh.
-
Major/Minor was definitely a continuation of Beggars and had a real similar style, but it was heavier and the songs were all around better IMO.
-
Beggars is still one of my favorite albums of all time and Vhiessu is fantastic too. I do agree that Major/Minor didn't really do as much for me, I still listen to it once in a while but it's not as good as their previous stuff.
-
I never got the huge appreciation for Beggars. To me it's a fine album, but probably not a top5 Thrice album. It has some good songs, but also half of it kinda feels like filler. The Alchemy Index, Vheissu and Illusion of Safety is where it's at. I'd take Major/Minor over Beggars.
-
Major/Minor is too samey for me, and also too heavy, if that makes sense. The songs that make Beggars so special to me are the quieter ones such as Circles, The Weight, Wood and Wire... M/M has almost none of that, except Words in the Water which is amazing.
-
TAI and Beggars are god-tier albums.
-
https://soundcloud.com/vagrantrecords/thrice-words-in-the-water-polaris
I'm not normally one for remixes but this was absolutely amazing.
I have this on a CD mix in my car, it's still that good.
-
I really have the the utmost respect for Thrice, since they not only have a deeply diverse catalogue, but I love like 99% of it. Lots of bands try new directions, but it takes a truly talented band to maintain the quality while re-inventing itself.

I agree totally with this. They're a top 10 band for me, and I love how diverse they are. I hope the new album is something different from all of their previous works as well, it's just how I think Thrice should continue if they're going to release something after Major/Minor, which I consider a great career-ending album.
-
I'm just pumped for more live shows.

I'm just pumped for more live shows.
The farewell tour was absolutely incredible. One of the better shows I've ever seen. I'm down for more
-
So I just got into Thrice a couple of days ago - only know The Alchemy Index so far - but man, what a band! I love Dustin's voice and also how much they switch things up and refuse to cling to one style. TAI is amazing in that regard, and I have the deepest respect for being able to play so many styles so well.
Current favourite songs: The Flame Deluge, Lost Continent, The Whaler, Daedalus, Digging My Own Grave, Child of Dust

Oh man, so many of those are great :heart
Check out Beggars next, I think, and then Vhiessu after.
-
Just purchased tickets for Chicago in June.....will be my 4th Thrice show 😀
-
So I just got into Thrice a couple of days ago - only know The Alchemy Index so far - but man, what a band!
The Alchemy Index is one of my favorite albums. It's amazing how they are able to create 4 entirely different musical outputs in tone and atmosphere and somehow make them feel like one big work. Out of the 4, Water is my favorite but I love everything in the package.
-
New album is gonna be called To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere.
-
wait what there's gonna be a new thrice? when?
-
They didn't drop a date yet, sometime during the year

NICE!

First song: Blood on the Sand

:caffeine:
-
yeah, it's fine
not really anything special it feels, and kensrue's voice sounds off imo but ehh. i'll wait for the album.
-
Really? I think his vocals sound fucking awesome on this, especially the high note in the chorus.
Still pretty standard single, though, I end up liking the singles the least usually when it comes to Thrice, but it's still really good.
-
I agree it wasn't their best song. Reminds me more of Dustin's solo stuff than Thrice. It's a more straightforward song than their best stuff, but it is a single, so it's probably one of the more basic songs on the album.
-
I wish they could experiment much more like on The Alchemy Index. This sounds like a b-side from Beggars or Major/Minor and as it has already been stated here, it's nice but nothing very special.
I'm really glad they're back, tho. :D
-
Gone 5 years and that's what they come back with. I liked beggars, but major/minor didn't really do that much for me and neither does this new song, mainly because I know they are capable so much more.
-
Official tracklisting according to Amazon:
1. Hurricane
2. Blood On The Sand

6. Seneca
7. Black Honey
8. Stay With Me
9. Death From Above
10. Whistleblower
11. Salt And Shadow
So ready for this!
-
I thought it was surprisingly straight forward and poppy on first listen, but from the second listen on I thought this song is just amazing. That high note at the end of the bridge is just.. wow.
-
Official tracklisting according to Amazon:
6. Seneca
:metal
I'm really looking forward to this. I thought the single was really good for what it was, just that I wanted much more.
-
bonus track: bizkit
-
Been listening to so much Thrice lately in preparation for the new one. Cannot wait!
I hope they have a song on par with Circles and Words In The Water I terms of emotion and beauty.
-
there will never be a Thrice song on par with Words in the Water for emotion and beauty
-
I've seen in their FB page 5 songs that inspired the new record and one of them was Big Riff by Cave In. I expect something heavy in their new album now
-
https://youtu.be/IWRM9ehjZZ8
New song, "Black Honey." Reminds me of Brand New a lot, it's really good.
-
Good track. These 2 tracks so far have a lot of energy. I like it!
-
New song is awesome, and yeah definite Brand New vibe!
-
New album is out, and it's sooooo good. Hurricane, Salt and Shadow, Stay With Me, ugh so many top songs.
-
guess I'll listen to this tonight
-
As if trying to get through a 9 hour day isn't enough, my best friend delivers my copy to me at work to tease me :lol
Can't wait to get home and blast this bitch!
-
First listen this morning didn't blow me away but there were several awesome moments. I need to give it some more less distracted listens to fully digest it.
-
Good lord, this seems to have come out of nowhere - I swear I had it in my head that it wasn't out for another month or two!
-
I feel that same way about the new album as I did about major/minor. Its just ok
I love old thrice and I love new thrice, but that love stops after beggars. The direction they went in for that album was fresh back in 2009 and I liked it a lot, but hearing it again for two more albums doesn't really do it for me.
-
Idk I'll have to disagree with your comment on the direction man, I mean I think there's a bit of Major/Minor throughout this one, but overall it feels more like a combination of Beggars, Vheissu, and parts from the Alchemy Indexes
-
also Salt and Shadow is SO Water + Air and it's beautiful
-
So I just finished my first listen and I think it's a pretty solid album. Hurricane is by far and away my favorite song on it, one of their greatest songs. Looking forward to hearing that one live. There were only 2 songs that didn't click with me and those were The Window and Wake Up. Maybe those need some time to grow on me. Other than that, awesome album!
-

I'm with you, Adamn. I like Major/Minor just fine, but this has a great deal more warmth and energy.
Goddamn there is some gorgeous stuff on this album.

Those are probably my least favorite too, but they are still solid songs. I also felt that way about Whistleblower at first, but it grew on me and I love it now, so maybe that will happen with those two.

Yessir! It's got a lot of post-rock-esque areas that I really, really enjoy and the occasional uplifting tone throughout the album is quite enjoyable.
-
Loving this album more and more with each listen. It's so damn good.
-
Had my first listen just now, and I have to say that it's pretty good. Clear standouts on the first listen were Hurricane, Black Honey and Salt and Shadow. The rest probably just need a few more listens to grow on me, but they haven't been doing a whole lot for me so far.
-
Best album since TAI!
-
I'm happy with the new album. It's solid and there's definitely enough of that energy. As a whole it's a bit darker than Major/Minor, which I like. Then again, some songs or sections are a bit sugary, like Stay With Me. I cannot stand that song at all at this point.
Instrumentally they seem as focused as ever, fat drum and bass grooves and gnarly telecasters (The Window) all over the place. Dustin sings amazing of course, but his voice has gotten even more gruff. Not a bad thing, but the vocals do seem somewhat overproduced/multitracked which gives this album that slightly more radio-rock sound.
Solid album, not a masterpiece a la the song Beggars or Daedalus here - the album's way too straightforward for that - but just a collection of cool songs.
Favorite tracks atm: Hurricane, The Window, Black Honey.
-
Oh man, Stay With Me is one of my favorites on the album. Together with Hurricane and Salt and Shadow.
-
I'd put Salt and Shadow as a Thrice masterpiece. It's beautiful, the lyrics are really good, and the melody is so haunting.
And I too love Stay With Me!
-
The Long Defeat is growing on me more and more. Hasn't beaten Hurricane as my favorite on the album, but it could.
-
I'm not a fan of Stay With Me too. On the third listen I would say it's another great album (they have never done a bad album, even Identity Crisis is great for me). My favourites are half of the songs of the album at this point (Hurricane, The Window, The Long Defeat with Seneca, Whistleblower and Salt and Shadow). I really like every song, only Wake Up and Stay With Me are only good and not great.
But honestly, I still like old Thrice a bit more, I don't know if some songs of this album will enter my Thrice top 10, but the whole album is really consistent!
-
My top 10 in album order:
Cold Cash And Colder Hearts
The Abolition Of Man
For Miles (one of the best songs ever and definitely top 1 of Thrice for me)
Like Moths To Flame
The Earth Will Shake
Weight Of Glory
The Flame Deluge
All The World Is Mad
Beggars
one among The Weight, The Arsonist, Lost Continent, various songs from The Artist In The Ambulance or Call It In The Air, just to add the other albums on the list.
-
For Miles is definitely my favorite Thrice song
-
I am extremely happy with this album. As a whole, it might actually be my favorite since Vheissu. I really wish the Chicago show wasn't sold out. I missed the on sale date and now secondary markets are selling for close to $70 a ticket. Song rankings so far:
1. Death From Above
2. Black Honey
3. Salt and Shadow
4. Hurricane
5. The Long Defeat
6. Blood on the Sand
7. Whistleblower

-

-
I'm not going to do a Top 10 list, but one song that would definitely be on mine and is conspicuously absent from all lists so far is Red Sky. Seriuosly, that's like the definition of epic.
-
Yeah, Red Sky and For Miles would be 11 and 12 for me, respectively. Just so many good Thrice songs.
-
Seneca would be in my upper half of the new album. I know it's only a transitional track, but I love it. Wish it was longer.
-
Heavily binging Thrice at the moment. The new album isn't quite as good as Vheissu or The Alchemy Index, but it's still superb, and I really like it.
EDIT: Having said that, Salt and Shadows is quickly rising to the very top of my favourite Thrice songs. Stunning, stunning song.
-
I don't think it's as good as Vheissu or The Alchemy Index either, but that's a tough act to follow and the band is now 8 (or 9 depending on how you count) albums into their career. This could very well be their third best, which is still amazing. I'd put Vheissu at 1 and TAI at 2 myself, then maybe this followed by Beggars. Their debut album is really the only one I don't care that much for. I'd put The Illusion of Safety quite high on my list, over albums like Major/Minor and The Artist in the Ambulance.
-
Album ranking!
1. Vheissu
2. The Alchemy Index
3. To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere

I'll do a Thrice top 10.. Mostly a fan from TAI and further.

2. Daedalus
3. Firebreather
4. The Earth Will Shake (live from the House of Blues)
5. All the World is Mad
6. Digital Sea

4. Vheissu
5. The Alchemy Index I & II
6. Major/Minor
7. The Artist in the Ambulance
8. The Illusion of Safety
9. Identity Crisis
-
I'm definitely liking the new album more with each listen. I haven't had a chance to sit an listen to it undistracted yet, so I'm sure I'll pick up more greatness with a more dedicated listen. So far I wouldn't put it up with their classics, but it's at least a little better than Major/Minor.
-
My current ranking of the Thrice albums that I know so far:
1. The Alchemy Index
2. Vheissu
3. To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere
4. Beggars
5. Major/Minor

First setlist of the tour, looks pretty damn good!

I'll do a Thrice top 10.. Mostly a fan from TAI and further.
3. Firebreather
4. The Earth Will Shake (live from the House of Blues)
Funny you have this ranked like this. My friend and I saw them twice a few years ago and refer to it as "back to back" because that's how they played it at both shows and it was amazing both times.
-
1. Artist in the ambulance tied with Illusion of safety
2. Alchemy index Air
3. Vheissu
4. Alchemy index water tied with earth
5. Beggars
6. Alchemy index fire
7. Major minor
8. Identity crisis
9. To be everywhere is to be nowhere
My Favorite Thrice song is Paper Tigers. Mother of god :metal :metal
-
Saw them in Chicago the other night for the 4th time.....easily one of the best shows I've seen in a long time (My voice is blown out and all my muscles are sore!)
Band was on top of everything, they sounded so thick and heavy, yet crystal clear. One of the top live bands out there for sure. Cheers!
-
After having spun the new album for a couple of times, I can safely say that Hurricane, Black Honey and Salt and Shadow are definitely a cut above the other songs on the album. While the album is nowhere close to TAI, Beggars or Vheissu in quality for me, those three songs are easily among the best songs that the band has done.
-
okay, i just can't take it. in this disaster of a year the absolute last thing i want to hear is a disgustingly preachy politically-charged album that doesn't even say anything new. seriously, blood on the sand and death from above especially can piss off, unlistenable songs just because of their lyrics tbh. there's some decent songs here (mostly the ones that aren't overtly political; hurricane, the window, and salt and shadow mostly) but i really am having trouble stomaching this tbh. i know thrice have gotten a little political before but there was an art to it on stuff like circles and beggars, here it's just so in-your-face and blunt that it's a huge turnoff.
i'm not sure why i bought this album tbh. mostly out of obligation. i wish they'd stayed on hiatus tbh.
-
so you're saying you are sick of it, so sick of it and you've had enough?
-
Considering the new album is better than both Major/Minor and Beggars, I'm happy they came out of retirement. Also, lol @ getting upset over lyrics.
-
beggars is one of the best albums i've ever heard, but sure :corn
and i'm usually not bothered by lyrics unless they're impossible to ignore
-
Definitely a shame that the lyrics have jarred with you on this one. They're no more preachy or particularly different in tone or subject to their previous output. Beggars is still my favourite, but I really do love the new album, right up there among their best IMO.
-
I honestly don't care what they write about, as long as they stand behind it and they have passion with it. This album is one of their absolute best IMO.
-
Finally saw these guys live on Friday night after several years of them being one of my favorite bands. Wow... just wow. So powerful. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
-

One of the many reasons they're in my top 10 favorite bands.
Ever since TBEITBN dropped in May, I've been listening to Thrice non stop. I think I might have spun it more than The Astonishing.
-
Thrice concert was nuts last night! Great show!
I thought the new songs came across really well live.
-
New song premiered today, titled The Grey! I think it's pretty good....no clue when the new album is out yet or what it's called. NA tour dates are up as well, with The Bronx and Teenage Wrist supporting.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsEKh33M0vw
-
Sounds pretty good, I should go back and listen to Thrice. It's been forever since I put on album on.
-
New song is pretty decent. more of the same, but decent
-
No Minneapolis date on their upcoming tour. That sucks.
-
I never ever miss Thrice, unless I have to. They’re one of my top 5, so I’ll be at Chicago for sure.
-
I got into Thrice basically just before they went on hiatus. I remember walking past their gig while they were playing a festival I was at, just because I thought they were just 'alright' at the time. A decision I went on to regret for years.
So the 17th of June 2018: There we were. And they were simply amazing. Starting off with Hurricane, the sound and energy was great, and Dustin sounded as good if not better than studio. Highlight after highlight, and suddenly my mate and I were discussing how great it would be if they'd play our favorite track (Daedalus). It was at that very moment when the band actually started to play Daedalus. My goodness. Seriously, a transcendent experience.
This is just that WOW factor that I'm always looking for when going to a concert. I like a lot of bands and I go to a lot of gigs. But there's only a few of them that can convey a true sense of 'magic' or you know, that 'higher' feeling. Maybe it has something to do with the religious undertones (I'm not religious myself), but Thrice just have IT. Definitely the best concert I've been to in 2018, and it's unlikely to be topped.
-
Welcome, and I’m glad you understand how amazing they are live. You hit it on the head when you said they create magic, cuz it’s stupid how great they are live! I’m always dying to talk to more hardcore fans of this band, cuz I seriously cannot get enough. Bring on that new album!
-
'Palms' is out 9/14. I'm so excited, this is my most anticipated release of the year!
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/thrice-the-grey-video-released-palms-album-due-in-september/
-
Nice :tup I was giving Thrice some spins a few weeks ago and I'm eagerly waiting to hear this album.
-
Another new song ‘Only Us’ and it’s awesome! Cannot wait for the new album, we’re exactly one month away!
https://youtu.be/BcLIQjnsvbE
-
This track is just incredible, I can't stop listening to it. WAY better than The Grey. Literally every single melody is a statement of intent, you can just feel the song building. Awesomely intensifying arrangement that culminates in an amazing explosion of heaviness. But the greatest thing going for it, for better or worse, is that ultra simple chorus melody. This band should be playing stadiums, I can just hear thousands of people belting this one out like their lives depend on it.

I agree with everything you said.
-
New album, Palms is out today. Giving it my first listen now. My initial reaction so far is that I like it, but I wish it was heavier. It mostly sounds like stuff that would have fit well on TBEITBN.
-
I’ve listened to it a few times already and I enjoy it a lot! Favorites are Beyond The Pines, Everything Belongs, and Only Us. I just wish the songs were longer; I feel that they could’ve extended the cooler parts of the songs a bit more, some of them end a little abruptly. But I like how this album is completely different than the last one. Can’t wait to see them next month, this tour is gonna be great!
-
Not a lot of interest in the new Thrice album? I thought there were a bunch of fans here.
After 3-4 listens, my original impressions still hold. I like the album a lot, but I wish it were heavier. I've thought that about the last few albums though, so it's unlikely I'll ever get my wish. Still need to give it more listens on a louder sound system than just my earbuds at work to get a really great impression of it.
-
Thrice is one of my favorite bands. I listened to the new album when it came out and it is ok, just like the last one was ok. They no longer blow my mind. I wish I could say otherwise.
-

I'm with you to an extent. I've still very much enjoyed the last few albums, but they're definitely not as good as their best. There are always a few songs I really like and some that are just OK. I think my biggest disappointment is that after altering their sound quite a bit with each album up through Beggars, every album since Beggars has had the same basic sound. They're different enough to be interesting, but after setting us up to expect the unexpected with each now album, that has been a bit of a disappointment. As I've said already, I'd love for them to return to a heavier sound for an album, TBEITBN was a slight step heavier, but now Palms is less heavy again. Thrice is still one of my top 3 bands and I still lvoe getting new music from them, but it would be nice to be blown away by one of their albums again.
-
I tried listening to the album today at work and I almost got through it. Started off strong with 'Only Us' but at some point there was a song that put me off so much I stopped altogether (A Branch In The River). The rest of the album wasn't bad but just sounded like more TBEITBN, but that one is honestly the first Thrice song I heard that I genuinely find bad (I don't know all their albums though). Maybe I'll give the album another chance some time but currently not rating it.
-
As strong as the opening track is, this album at the moment disappoints my high expectations. I don’t have a rational explanation yet, but compared to what Thrice is capable of.. I’m not that impressed.
-
Listened through the new album a couple of days ago and it was ok. Probably bottom tier Thrice album for me.
-
It definitely is the weakest of the all the post-Alchemy Index albums no doubt. But I still enjoy it from front to back. IMO, these guys don’t have a bad album.
-
What album should I check out? Haven't heard much and they're headlining Disrupt Festival.
-
Beggars or Vhiessu (especially the former as it's their best & probably more in line with what they'll be playing nowadays)
-
Beggars or Vhiessu (especially the former as it's their best & probably more in line with what they'll be playing nowadays)
Will check them out after I give their recent release
-
Vheissu is their greatest work by far IMO. One of my top favorite albums of all time.
-
Vheissu is really excellent and very well balanced. Kind of has their old sound, kind of has their new sound. All around great album.
When I went to go see them live, I had never heard Illusion of safety or Artist in the ambulance, but seeing them live made me a massive fan of those albums. Very raw, in your face, aggressive, high energy, catchy albums.
Fire/Water and Air/Earth are very deep and beautiful albums. Much more laid back then their first few albums.
Beggars is great. Wood and Wire and Circles are utterly incredible songs.
-
I didn't realize they had a thread here, but I saw them last weekend at Warped Tour, here's my video:
Thrice - Silhouette LIVE @ Warped Tour 25th Atlantic City NJ 2019 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVqShmaRTRU)
and I'm about to see them again tonight at Disrupt Festival. I wasn't really familiar with them at all, but been listening to the songs that I saw https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/thrice/2019/atlantic-city-beach-atlantic-city-nj-5b9167a8.html (https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/thrice/2019/atlantic-city-beach-atlantic-city-nj-5b9167a8.html) and they're pretty solid. Their hit song is a good one for sure, Black Honey.
-
What album should I check out? Haven't heard much and they're headlining Disrupt Festival.
I wouldn't expect it to get hardly any play in that set, but The Alchemy Index (both albums) would be my recommendation.
-
The boys are hitting the road early next year playing Vheissu in its entirety for the 15th anniversary.
There is no way in hell I am missing this. Vheissu is one of my top 5 favorite albums of all time. I’ve been asking for it for years and it’s actually happening! 🤘🤘
-
oh hell yes, hope they do a show near me
-
I'll definitely hit up the Minneapolis show on this tour. Love Vheissu!

so this show is tonight at my local ballroom. Wasn't on my radar as I'm not a huge Thrice fan, but saw them twice last year as my introduction (at Warped Tour and at Disrupt Festival). I've got no plans tonight and this is local so just scooped up a second hand ticket for $20 after fees right before the show starts :metal I'll head over in a bit

Enjoy the show....they are way better headlining their own show than any festival.

These 2 new songs are awesome. I’m really looking forward to the new album and tour!

How was the show Marc? I saw a few days ago that they are coming here in October, I think I'll go check them out.
Damn that was in 2020 before the pandemic hit :lol It was good, but I can't immediately recall specifics. I'm not quite the huge Thrice fan to really spit out details. I remember having fun and that it was a pretty dark (in terms of lighting) show. They are actually coming around this fall to the same venue, it's not currently on my concert list, but not out of the realm of possibility that I end up going.
-
Woah that was completely my mistake, I saw that Thrice is coming to my town and clicked on this thread thinking it was the 2021 concerts thread which I then thought you just saw them :lol
-
:lol it's all good, I was surprised to see my comment being one of the recent ones and yet from so long ago, plus it seems I never followed up with a review which I typically try to do.

I agree. Can’t stop playing them, this has me extremely psyched. The direction seems more ambitious and more in line with their approach on Beggars, The Alchemy Index or even Vheissu. And damn, Teppei’s produced this - this is the best and most hi-fi they’ve ever sounded in the studio as far as I’m concerned.
-
New album came out yesterday for those interested. I personally think it could be their best since Beggars. Really great stuff.
-
I'm looking forward to checking it out later this week.
-
Just discovered this band, thank you DTF.
Loving The Colour of the Sky. The drum work is incredible!
-
Been listening to Artist in the ambulance and Illusion of safety on heavy rotation lately.
Great albums to get motivated and focused on things.
-
Big fan of Artist in the Ambulance...haven't listened to it in a while, and I should remedy that.
That and Vheissu are my favorite Thrice albums. I thought their comeback of sorts "To be everywhere..." was really good, but then for some reason I don't think I've ever checked out the follow-up (Palms)...
Started listening to Horizons/East as we speak...The Color of the Sky is great!

Welcome and enjoy the ride! Check out Vheissu if you haven’t already - it’s widely regarded as their finest album.

would've loved to like this album but Kensrue's voice is so shot the entire record I found it hard to listen to. the music might be good idk hard to pay attention to it
-
I found his voice a bit ragged, but not to the point of being distracting...do you feel it's in significantly worse shape than in the last couple records?
-
i'll be honest i listened to palms like twice so i don't remember much of it but he sounds worse than he's ever sounded here for sure, though i feel like it's been a slow decline over the last few records since the reunion. didn't have this problem with to be everything is to be nothing at least.
another music guy outside of DTF i talked to also immediately noticed the same issues but wasn't as bothered by them as i was either so it's probably just my hangup because i know how good kensrue sounded at his best
-
Only one listen in, so it's early, but I really liked it. First impression was first half (roughly) is stronger than the second...although the closer is very interesting...
-
I honestly haven't noticed an issue with his voice so far. It's always had a gravelly sort of edge to it which is one of the things I love about it (gives his singing a lot of warmth and emotion) and I've probably just been enjoying the songs too much to really notice.
Overall I'm loving the album. It's a great balance of the experimentation from Palms with the energy and intensity of their mid-era albums. Great stuff.
-
I'm not really a huge fan but I liked Palms, and I like this new record.
Thinking about it, I know a friend lent me The Artist in the Ambulance and Vheissu back in like '09. I really wasn't into either album and I don't think I even listened to Thrice again until Cyril sent me Words in Water in my first roulette. I've only listened to The Alchemy Index through to their latest since then. I guess I better go revisit their early albums :corn
-
I'm curious to check out this new album even though I thought Palms was their worst album by a margin. I can't even remember a single song from it.
-
New song released called Open Your Eyes and Dream. I like it better than most of their new stuff the last few years.
-
Yeah, it’s another B-side from Horizons/East

I just listened to this today... This tune is great! I did NOT see this coming from them these days. And a good portion of the tune is in 5/8. That opening part really had me off-kilter until I could count it out. Nice surprise to hear today!
Yeah, it’s another B-side from Horizons/East
Is it a B-Side, or is it a first single to Horizons/West maybe?
-
The boys released a re-recorded version of The Artist in the Ambulance (with some special guests on some songs). I'm actually really liking it. Of course, not as good as the original.
They're also going on tour playing The Artist in the Ambulance in it's entirety. No Minneapolis show, which sucks for me. I am going to be in Boston a few days after the show there and I'd love to be able to go early to catch it. But I don't think I can leave my wife with 5 kids by herself for a few days longer than was already planned.

I am so behind on this band. Like, 3 albums worth. Except Black Honey, I do know that song. How are the last 3 albums?
I saw they re-recorded TAITA. I just listened to Stare at the Sun and the title track, and it's really interesting to hear them. I thought this was some sort of remix album of the original until I investigated further.

To Be Everywhere is one of their very best albums IMO, arguably in the top 3. Palms is one of their weakest but still good. Horizons/East is a big step up from Palms, some excellent tracks.
Again in my personal opinion, they don’t have a bad album. So even the weakest ones are still enjoyable listens.

Nice, in the coming year I'll start with TBE. Thrice will always make at least good music.

Agreed with all that. TBEITBN really goes hard on the emotional side of their music, which I love.
