Only Revolutions is out on Monday, any chat about the band can go in this thread

If this thread gets no chat I apologise for starting it!  :D

I think you should just apologize for liking Biffy Clyro :neverusethis:

Seriously though, they're not my cup of tea. Even after being constantly being subjected to their songs by my friends.

I listened to their previous album once or twince and wasn't thrilled by it. I'll give this one a listen and see how I feel about it.

I think Bubbles is pretty much the best popular song I've heard in ages, and I respect them for introducing weird time signatures and stuff into pop and still being successful, but I don't really like any of their other songs other than Machines. Still, I respect them.

They're always incredible live.

well, save for the fact they have no stage presence. At the show I saw them a few years ago, they went on stage and played their songs, without saying a word to the crowd. They then bowed and just stayed backstage afterward during Editors set.

they don't need stage presence, they just need to carry on battering the shit out of their instruments

To be honest Bubbles is the only song of theirs I find particularly interesting. And this is obviously subjective, but the intro to 'Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies' is the most comical thing I've ever heard musically, in a bad way.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: bodiesinflight on June 07, 2010, 01:25:45 PM
How's it comical?
I can understand it being annoying but I don't see why it's funny in any way shape or form.

and Bodies In Flight is the best song ever pretty much so  :P

It's just because some Youtube commenter said it sounded like a kitten mashing on a Casio keyboard with completely random timing, which I agree with, so now whenever I hear it I see that. And I haven't heard that one, I'll check it out.

The only song I know is that popular radio tune (When we collide we'll come together?), but that Bodies in Flight song is pseudo-complicated screamcore mathrock stuff? So they just made a switch to mainstream rock in one album's time?
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: bodiesinflight on July 02, 2010, 09:15:53 AM
They've always done ballady songs as well. And the new album isn't all "mainstream rock" - whatever that means (evidence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDmeMjsV35U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDmeMjsV35U)). They just write songs, some of them are quite heavy and complex and some are really simple, of late they haven't done as much heavy stuff but they still rock live, trust me.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: faemir on August 04, 2010, 04:24:58 PM
So i'm listening to The Vertigo of Bliss, and Bodies in Flight is my least favourite on the album so far :lol But overall it's really cool, I need to listen to it more times to get to know it, but certain songs already stuck out as really good. I like the heavy stuff too.

Post by: bodiesinflight on August 07, 2010, 04:10:43 AM
I like Puzzle but it's definitely their worst album imo. The main problem I have with that and OR tbh is the production. I just think they sound far too clean and it doesn't really suit them. Live however the newer songs still rock though, even The Captain!

I'm curious about if Mike Vennart from Oceansize may be coming along for the tour of the States. I've never seen Oceansize or met any of those guys, but it would be cool to at least see Mike and maybe get a chance to chat with him at least if he in fact will be playing with Biffy as he has often, recently.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: bodiesinflight on December 05, 2010, 07:26:13 AM
I don't think Mike will be going out to the US I'm afraid, he's only been doing UK shows with them thus far and I expect 'Size may well be on tour again at some point next springtime.

Biffy have basically been owning Britain's arenas in the last week or so. Last night at Wembley was the final date of the tour and they totally rocked the place to its foundations.

Totally go and see Biffy basically, they're awesome and they're wonderful guys as well.

Aw man, I probably could've got you a free ticket last night. Didn't think you'd be fussed though. Sorry.

It's just a bit surprising that he's wasting time in a band that's just decent, when he's in the best band in the world.  ::)

You've become an Oceansize megafan overnight which is good but keep in mind that the money Mike earns from touring with Biffy mostly goes back to Oceansize and helps them continue as a band. Also Biffy and Mike are pretty much best friends so it's hardly a surprising combination (as well as the fact that Mike loves Biffy's music - as seen by him screaming along during live shows) and Mike was on tour with 'Size for 2 and a half months not so long ago so he's hardly been slacking on the 'Size front!

Also, what role is Mike playing live for Biffy?
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: bodiesinflight on December 07, 2010, 11:41:24 AM
Mike plays all the second guitar parts/string parts on his guitar. This really fills up their sound live.

Also I'm delighted to say that Biffy Clyro will headline Sonisphere Festival 2011 Knebworth.

Can't stop listening to Only Revolutions. Was already familiar with Many of Horror but decided to give the full album a spin last week and I am hooked. There is just 1 song I don't like, Born on a Horse, but the rest is really nice. Many of Horror is still my favorite though, it's so good.

I like Puzzle and O.R. is pretty good too but they're getting slightly less "Biffy" with each album.

If you listen to Infinity Land and Vertigo of Bliss - it really is like a different band.

I listened to the first single from Opposites and they are slowly but surely becoming Snow Patrol..

I hope that Opposites has more of that earlier crazy fucked up Biffy sound.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: faemir on January 24, 2013, 10:08:00 AM
I think that OR is miles ahead of Puzzle, Opposites definitely feels less mainstream than OR (whether that is good or bad is up to you), I mean... it is a double album.

I still don't get the love for their older stuff - I get bored with their first two releases. The craziness of Infinity Land is cool, but I still think that their songwriting only came into it's prime with OR.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro

I agree with you Dan, the earlier stuff is alright, but I think they've become more engaging these days. I really like both of OR and Puzzle, and am really looking forward to the new album!

Kotow, have you heard both singles? One of them is quite ballady but the other one is rocking.

Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: Kotowboy on January 25, 2013, 12:01:56 PM
There's something that happens to a band when they get big - their live sound just gets all smoothed over and really safe.

Oasis back in the day were an absolute wall of rhythm guitar Marshall noise. When They played Wembley - it was pretty much like listening to a CD over the PA ( yes they were playing live ).

Same with Green Day. Compare 1994 shows to something off Awesome As F*** - all the abrasion is absent.

Yes they have better gear and yes theyre better performers but...

And im not just taking about the quality of live recordings.. Actually being there.

Been a fan of these guys for a long time now, a friend introduced me to them after The Vertigo of Bliss came out (which I still think is their best album). I love the first 4 albums, although when Puzzle came out you could hear their sound beginning to change a little - it still has some of their best tracks though. Was excited for Only Revolutions when I heard 'That Golden Rule' - but the rest of the album was so disappointing to me, hated it all.

Was expecting more of the same from Opposites, but I've listened to it a couple of times and it seems much better. There doesn't seem to be any great stand out tracks though unfortunately.

They seem to have followed a similar sort of path to Muse - for me anyway. Good solid debut album, followed up with their best work on the second. Consolidate nicely with a good third album, then begin to change their sound a little with the 4th, appealing to a more mainstream audience but still having some killer tracks. Then with the 5th album, only 1 or 2 good tracks and the rest really poor. Then with the 6th, things are a bit more consistent, but a lack of really good songs like they used to write.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: Heretic on January 29, 2013, 02:31:17 PM
If you're saying Opposites doesn't have any standout tracks you're nuts. Different People, Black Chandelier, Accident Without Emergency, Spanish Radio, Pocket-- all really good songs.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: krands85 on January 29, 2013, 06:52:47 PM
Well yeah, I'm probably a bit premature phrasing it like that after only 2 listens. Especially as most songs and albums take a good number listens before I can appreciate them properly.

It's just with Biffy, they seemed to have that knack on the earlier albums of having songs that stood out for me immediately, literally the first time I heard them - That Golden Rule, Semi-Mental, Living is a Problem and Glitter & Trauma/Jaggy Snake/My Recovery Injection from Infinity Land.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: Zantera on January 30, 2013, 08:20:23 AM
I really like the album, but It's hard to properly rank it. I would probably say 4 out of 5 (if 4.5 is also a possibility).
The best songs are amazing, I'd say "Different People" and "Opposite" are the two standouts for me. There are some really awesome songs, some great songs and some good ones. I don't think there's any bad songs on it, but a few ups and downs.
Title: Re: Biffy Clyro
Post by: ariich on January 30, 2013, 12:07:11 PM
Finally got the album, given it a couple of listens now and I'm really digging it. I like the way the lyrical themes on the two discs are so distinct, although it's a shame the tone of the music doesn't differ in the same way.

For some reason most of the shops here are almost only stocking the one-disc version, wtf.

I don't listen to the band that much these days and I'm not very keen on their newer stuff, but that first night looks great - especially since I've never seen them live before. Got an expensive few months coming up, gig-wise!

If you're saying Opposites doesn't have any standout tracks you're nuts. Different People, Black Chandelier, Accident Without Emergency, Spanish Radio, Pocket-- all really good songs.

There's loads of fantastic songs on it. Sounds Like Balloons.... Stingin' Belle...Victory Over The Sun...

Think Spanish Radio might be THE best song though. It's hauntingly gorgeous.

Been listening to a lot of Biffy recently. Mostly the most recent three albums.

I "inherited" them on CD since bro doesn't have any need for them once he imports them and I still like having a CD collection.

Opposites is a fantastic album and Only Revolutions is actually better than I remember.

I first got into the band in 2004 and just bought their 2004 album on CD.

Garth Richardson is a great producer it must be said.

I remember being interested in them back then coz 1. that's all my bro would listen to and 2. Infinity Land was produced by Chris Sheldon - who was the producer on

Therapy?'s Troublegum - which is one of my all time favourite albums.

They have a new album coming out titled "Balance, Not Symmetry" which is the title of a film they just made in Scotland. The soundtrack is coming out of course as well.

New single is straight fire! A lot rougher than the last two albums  :metal

Yeah it's a short song but absolutely cracking!

Interesting that this is a soundtrack album, I wonder if it'll be different structurally (e.g. lots of incidental music etc) or simply a collection of songs like their normal albums.

Totally hadn't realised that the soundtrack album came out.

It's really good! Very varied stylistically, from some very poppy stuff to some stuff that's crunchier than anything they've done for a while.

Man, this new album has come along and made me want to dive back into Biffy again. I had a girlfriend who was pretty much in love with them about 10 years ago. I was never into them as much as she was but I always liked certain songs and checked out all their new releases. Glad I checked this new one out as I almost didn't. Definitely going to go on a Biffy binge though now  :metal

anyone else check out their new record "The Myth of the Happily Ever After"?

I'm pretty surprised how good it is at times, mainly because their last few records have been pretty forgettable for me, but while I haven't heard this new one that many times, I already feel I like it more than anything since Opposites.

So if you are one of those fans like me, that kind of jumped ship over the last few years, you may want to checkout this new album of theirs.

I'll check this out. I wasn't aware they had a new one coming out.

Puzzle is my favorite Biffy Clyro, I always thought that's where they struck just the right balance between catchy and quirky. It was actually one of my favorites the year it came out, fantastic stuff. The earlier albums are a bit much sometimes. Loved Only Revolutions too, and thought Opposites was very good. The couple of albums after that didn't grab me, although to be fair I didn't spend a whole lot of time with them. Curious to hear what they came up with this time!

I enjoyed the last album but haven't checked out the new one yet.

But they both sound better than Ellipsis - which was really disappointing to me.

My bro loves the first 3 albums the most. I love the middle 3. I think Opposites is their masterpiece and

a double album where the second half isn't all padding.

Puzzle is really good too.

I'm not the hugest fan of the first 3 albums despite them being made by one of my favourite producers - Chris Sheldon.

I have it on order, but the US release date of the physical is like early December. I could order the import for twice the price, but I don't think so. I just have to wait.

Infinity Land is my favorite album. The Opposites/Similarities combo is just excellent as well. Pretty much give me anything from Vertigo -> Opposites.

I only discovered these guys last year so they are still pretty new to me. I still regularly listen to them. Just a fantastic band.

Opposites has some stunning songs.

Most notably " Sounds Like Balloons " with it's gigantic anthemic chorus - and " Spanish Radio " - which is GORGEOUS.

Also " Little Hospitals " is catchy as hell. They've released a LOT of music in the last 7 years too.

Opposites, Similarities, Ellipsis, Balance - Not Symmetry, A Celebration Of Endings & The Myth of The Happily Ever After.

6 albums in 7 years - once of which is a double album.

Myth is finally arriving today. It could have an impact on my Top 5 of 2021, but we'll see. I have only heard one song so far (Unknown Male) and I thought it had some old-school Biff in it.

Looking forward to finally having this.

Watched the doc last weekend. Pretty cool how they recorded Myth. I will say, Myth is the best thing they have done in some time. I really love it, much more than Celebration. Many nods to the older records along with just some great music.

I cannot wait to see them next month. Have not looked forward to a show like this in quite some time.

Funny, I had a hankering to listen to some Biffy last night. Did a few from Myth, dropped all the way back to Vertigo and finished up with some stuff from Revolutions.

I absolutely love the Puzzle - Only Revolutions - Opposites run. So many great songs in there...catchy, clever, moving...often all at once. Subsequent albums haven't wowed me as much, but I need to revisit.
