Title: The Dream Theater Live Archive (UPDATED 09/02)
Post by: setrataeso on November 03, 2009, 08:35:43 PM
Over the past many months, I've spent countless hours on Mike Portnoy's tourography page and the concerts and setlists page here on DTF compiling all the setlists and adorning each song with a number based on how many times it has been played live.
There are a few different ways I counted a song played. Oftentimes if they played a significant portion of a song I count the full song (for instance, on Burning My Soul '96, I counted Burning My Soul and Hells Kitchen as being played). Medleys are counted on their own, but the medley count is noted beside the included songs.
I did not count the covers or random jam songs they played in this list, but they are tallied on the full one saved on my computer. I did count the various solos played as singular tracks, or as extended pieces (they are not representative of how many in-song solos they have played).
Feel free to scrutinize and ask why I counted certain songs the way I did.
Enjoy.

Interesting comparing them all. Last time I checked a while back, the gap between Metropolis and PMU was bigger, but it's really closed in now. There are some other comparisons that really surprise me too.

I disagree with you including the songs in medleys.  The medley's should be counted separately, imo.

But good work.

Well, there is a significant amount of each song being played, I figured it would be fair. It's not like I counted the A Fortune in Lies teasers they play at the end of some songs. In Schmedley, they play full verses and instrumental sections of different songs. Seemed like enough for me. Instrumedley worked the same way too.

Sweet, that's a noble thing to do for DTF. Thanks man!

A-thank you.

Good stuff. Though I agree that Medleys should be counted as Medleys.

Bah! People don't care how many times Schmedley Wilcox was played, they care how many times Finally Free was played! If it gets played I chalk it up on the song side.

Probably because he included medleys, such as the Metropolis/Learning to Live/A Change of Seasons medley.

Plus Metropolis got a bunch of playtime in Instrumedley. But they played it a fair bit over the past few tour legs.

The number of times Metropolis has been played compared with Pull Me Under, due to Metropolis' inclusions in so many medleys.

On an individual basis, Pull Me Under has had far more singular song plays, Metropolis is featured in many medleys.
Why did you call me Blob?

Including medley performances makes no sense. They didn't play the song, therefore it shouldn't be included in the count. Playing 2 or 3 minutes of a 10 minute or even 24 minute song is not a "significant portion".

This.  A noble effort, but ultimately your statistics are deeply flawed.

Well, they played something, so you would want him to count it as a medley or. . .?

I think all of the medleys should be included in the list in a separate section, such as the Instrumedley, Shmedley Wilcox etc. So instead of counting DT as playing ITNOG/LTL/Octavarium/ToT etc every time they play the Shmedley, you count it as the medley.

Sweet beans, but if it took him months to compile this. . .I don't think he would want to start over.

Besides, I see his point as well, to separate the medleys and count it as being played. Really, it could be done either way, as either option will have some opposition to it.

I'm glad my work is appreciated.
If you guys insist, I'll go back and compile how many times the medleys have been played and include that.
However, I stand by my inclusion of counting the individual songs in medleys, and I won't change that.

I don't see what the problem is.
If I count the medleys, you just take the full number of, say, Octavarium, and then subtract the number of Schmedley Wilcox, and you have singular Octavarium plays right there. For those who care about amount of times its been played alone or in a medley, the number is there too.

What was the purpose for spending all this time?  How is it counted on MP.com?  Because that one is official.  If you're doing it differently than it's done there, then you're giving contradictory information.  If you're doing it the same, well, it's already there, so I don't see the point, really.
Title: Re: The Fully Updated Dream Theater Live Archive

I appreciate the effort, but I'm not personally interested in how often short sections of songs were played, so if I want the info I'll probably just stick with the MP.com tourography.

Well MP's tourography doesn't show all the songs. Certain ones that far played frequently, like Metropolis, just show a error on the page, as the number is too high.
Frankly, I did this for fun and to get into Dream Theater's setlists and learn about it. I posted it here because I thought people would enjoy being able to compare how often certain songs are played, and to have one easy-to-check list. Instead, I get umpteen people bitching at me, telling how I should have done it.

If it's any consolation to you...I think you've obviously worked very hard on it and it's interesting even if it is a teeny bit 'flawed'.
Personally I don't mind...it must've taken long enough to do it so you can do it anyway you want

setrataeso, did you manually go through each setlist and tot up the information or use the search facility where you could?

I briefly had a bash at writing a program to go through them, although it was irritating due to alot of special cases, eg caught in a web mash ups..
Hard to say what counts and what doesn't (eg Metropolis/LTL/Crimson sunset medley this tour has most of metropolis, but misses the good bit at the end).

Still, great effort on your part, although it would be nice to see the proportions of each song in a medley. (eg trial of tears 153, 50 in schmedley wilcox).
With razors edge in schmedley wilcox, you could do like you've done with ACOS/6DOIT and split into Octavarium or Razor's Edge by itself.

I went through each show one by one and counted each song one at a time.
Another thing is that I haven't heard every one of the medleys played. I can't be sure how much of each song gets played. I know that more of THe Dance of Eternity is played in Instrumedley than say, Hells Kitchen. But for something like the recent Metropolis/LTL/Crimson Sunset medley, which I haven't actually heard, I can't be sure how much of each thing is played. I got to count them all.
What if almost all of Metropolis is played except the last verse? Do I count the whole thing because of the significant portion of it that had been played? If I do that, I have to count it for every song if a significant portion of it is played.

Honestly I think a good idea would be to say how many times it was played, and then in parenthesis how many of those times were in a particular medley.

For example-

Learning to Live: 450 (100 times as part of Metropolis/Learning to Live/Crimson Sunset and 50 times as part of Schmedley Wilcox)

Now, I would actually prefer that the number be full plays, and then have medleys added on, but you have already said you won't do that, but for example that would look like this-

Learning to Live: 300 (Also played 100 times as part of Metropolis/Learning to Live/Crimson Sunset and 50 times as part of Schmedley Wilcox)

I given it some thought, and your method seems to match what I would consider doing.
In which case, give me a week or so, and I'll have the redistributed version up.

I really didn't want to have to change it, but I'd rather change it and have more insightful comments based on the actual list, than leave it as is and all comments be about how it should be changed.

EDIT: Sorry about that. Mis-searched the MP tourography. It listed it as WIAWU medley for being played 1 time, and WIAWU for 14. I key searched medley, so I missed the other 14. All fixed now.

Hey thanks for putting this list together dude.  Major props.

I noticed that you didnt include Dont Look Past Me on the list of demos.  Is it because it has never been played live even once or did you forget it?

I always thought it was one of their best songs and would love to hear it live even though I know it will probably never happen.  I was lucky enough to hear To Live Forever live.

Don't Look Past Me has never been played live. Along with Space Dye Vest, The Shattered Fortress, and The Best of Times (and I guess you could include You Or Me), it has yet to be played.
It is a good song, however I wouldn't count on a live performance of it anytime soon.

yea... well TSF and TBOT will eventually get played for sure, just probably not on this tour.

SDV... the only chance I ever see it getting played is if they play all of Awake for this anniversary show like they did with the 1st 2 albums but they probably wont play it anyway unless Kevin Moore shows up which also probably wont happen.

One thing I was wondering, when you went through the old sets and they played the demo version of Burning My Soul, did you count it as JUST Burning My Soul or did you remember that the entirety of Hells Kitchen is included in the middle of it?  I actually saw them play this version live when they were on their first tour for SDOIT and it was pretty cool.
Title: Re: The Fully Updated Dream Theater Live Archive

On MP's tourography, they note which version of Burning My Soul it is. "Burning My Soul" is just the singular song, but "Burning My Soul '96" is the version with Hell's Kitchen in it. So basically any show where Burning My Soul '96 was played, I counted both Burning My Soul and Hell's Kitchen.

Hell's Kitchen has only been played 4 times outside of Burning My Soul '96 and Instrumedley.

Those were never designated officially as medleys on MP's tourography. It was written as:
Metropolis/
Learning to Live/
The Crimson Sunset

So, the ones for the Prog Nation 09 tour are actually only temporary. When they are posted on MP's site, if they are logged as they were before, then I'll take off the medley part an retally the individual songs. If it does say "medley" specifically then it'll stay as is.

Either way, yes that was the majority of the individual plays for The Crimson Sunset.

Those were never designated officially as medleys on MP's tourography.
They were, in fact, medleys.

When in doubt I check MP's tourography. It doesn't say medley anywhere, I don't say medley anywhere.

I'm pretty sure that the slash usually indicated a medley in some form.

Not necessarily. A slash just usually means a transition with no break.
Besides, it doesn't say medley, so there's no keyword I can use in the search option. I would have a hard time going back through the list and picking it all apart again.

FFS, it's a medley.

Seriously, this. If it looks like a medley, it it sounds like a medley, and it smells like a medley, it's a medley. It's only named by individual songs because the medley obviously doesn't have its own specific name, but it's obviously a medley. There is no grey area here when it comes to the definition of a medley.

GOD. DAMMIT.

Okay, I'm fixing it today.
I'm blending the medley from the Touring into Infinty shows and the PN09 shows. I know they are slightly different, but its the same 3 songs.
I need a name from that medley. Give me some ideas.

I haven't heard of Spirit of St. Louis, so I imagine it was recorded in the MP tourography under a different name.
All of the misc jam/live-only tracks are in my personal archive, but I didn't upload them here, as it's fairly cluttered.
However, because you asked, Bombay Vindaloo has been played 8 times.

I dunno, I put Space-Dye Vest, because it's actually part of a studio album. If I put Don't Look Past Me on there and then mark it as 0, I'd get a lot of WTF looks.

And Repentance has only been played once.

Just had another look at this and realized how awesome it is. Thanks again, setra!

I do have a suggestion, though. For the sake of clarity, perhaps you ought to consider how many times Dream Theater has played Burning My Soul '96 - the version within which much of Hell's Kitchen is played. At the very least, I know it was played at times on the Six Degrees tour, but it may have been played on other tours as well.

Just a thought, at any rate.

Well, obviously I did count Hells Kitchen as being played when BMS '96 was played. The only issue is for those unfamiliar with the Burning My Soul/Burning My Soul '96 deal, it will be confusing. Plus, I wouldn't know where to put it.
I think its fine, and its still accurate at any rate.

Well, that would be pretty pointless considering:

a) That rarely happens. Sometimes all the songs from an album get played in one show, but seldom do they choose to play the whole thing.
b) I really don't want to go back and look through the tourography again unless it was for something more significant.
c) I don't think people care that much about the "full album" thing. This thread is meant more individual songs, considering that seems to be a far more frequently pondered subject around here...

I agree with setrataeso. Look at it like this:

WDaDU was played once on its 15th anniversary.
IaW was played a few times around the time of its 15th anniversary.
SFaM was played a number of times around the time it came out.

Is it so important to know any more than that?

Oh really? Interesting. And now that I think of it, Train of Thought was played once in its entirety on the very first show of that tour. I seem to remember reading that it was a practice show for the rest of the tour or something and as such MP has requested that no bootlegs of the show circulate.

You should add how many times an album has been played in full.

Two months later, I decided to look it up:

When Dream and Day Unite - 1
Images and Words - 5
Awake - 0
Falling into Infinity - 0
Scenes from a Memory - 28
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - 0
Train of Thought - 1
Octavarium - 2
Systematic Chaos - 0
Black Clouds & Silver Linings - 0

Also, there have been instances when all the songs from a given album have been played at the concert, just not in the correct order and/or with other songs included between them as well:

When Dream and Day Unite - 3
Images and Words - 187
Train of Thought - 3

Scenes from a Memory - 28
This seems low.

Well look at it like this: Regression has only been played live 29 times, so they couldn't possibly have played the the album in its entirely more than 29 times. The reason it's only 28 is because at one show (2/4/2000  Los Angeles, CA) they got shut down before they could play Finally Free. Thus, Scenes from a Memory has been played in its entirety 28 times:

1/31/2000  Phoenix, AZ
2/1/2000  Las Vegas, NV
2/2/2000  Santa Ana, CA
2/5/2000  Los Angeles, CA
2/6/2000  San Francisco, CA
2/8/2000  Salt Lake City, UT
2/9/2000  Denver, CO
2/15/2000  Cincinnati, OH
2/19/2000  Pittsburgh, PA
2/23/2000  New Haven, CT
2/25/2000  Philadelphia, PA
2/26/2000  New York, NY
2/27/2000  Boston, MA
3/3/2000  Orlando, FL
4/1/2000  Offenbach, Germany
7/9/2000  Essen, Germany
7/12/2000  Hamburg, Germany
7/14/2000  Athens, Greece

8/29/2000  Wallingford, CT
8/30/2000  New York, NY

Still seems low - maybe this might be due to the fact that the MP.com tourography is missing some setlists. Because I know for a fact that the album was played several times in England.

Nah, this is really just a hobby/project for DTF I do.
The tourography is part of Scotty's job.
I wouldn't feel right telling him how to do his job...

No no, I just meant asking him about it (ie. why? when?), not telling him to get on it.

Well, If I asked Scotty, then he would have to go talk with Mike. Considering Mike's pretty busy right now, what with A7X (or however the hell you abbreviate it).
I will get around to it at some point.
Plus, Scotty hasn't updated the South American BC&SL leg or the IM Summer Tour. He may be waiting for the Japanese duo of shows before he puts them up, but we'll see.

Those 66 shows have been 'coming soon' for years, so I don't expect them to be updated any time in the near future.

You could check the MP tourography for city-specific setlists.
But, I went ahead and found out for you:

Pull Me Under: 5 (11/24/92, 1/31/00, 3/7/02, 7/23/05, 6/17/10)
Take the Time: 5 (11/24/92, 1/31/00, 3/7/02, 8/8/02, 3/6/06)
Home: 5 (1/31/00, 8/19/00, 3/7/02, 3/6/06, 6/17/10)
The Spirit Carries On: 5 (1/31/00, 8/19/00, 3/7/02, 8/8/02, 7/25/07)
Learning to Live: 4 (11/24/92, 8/19/00, 3/6/06, 7/25/07)
Fatal Tragedy: 4 (1/31/00, 8/19/00, 8/8/02, 7/23/05)

Those are the songs that have been played more than 3 times in DT's history in Phoenix.

That looked like an amazing show, btw. I wasn't a fan back then, but I'm glad the IM 2010 Tour set wasn't the only one to grace our nation's capital, because...well...that would just be sad...

it has been reported that that is the largest attended show ever at that venue (capitol city music hall)

They opened by turning all the lights out and the booming cello of the Psycho theme blasted us for nearly 5 minutes.

I'd love to find a bootleg of that show. Sadly I think I'm S.O.L

You should add how many times an album has been played in full.

I agree with setrataeso. Look at it like this:

WDaDU was played once on its 15th anniversary.
IaW was played a few times around the time of its 15th anniversary.
SFaM was played a number of times around the time it came out.

Is it so important to know any more than that?

Note that Train of Thought was played in its entirety in track listed order on the first show of TOT tour.  So the opening set of that entire tour was the newest album in full.  How unexpectedly prog was that?

The answer is "very".

It was very unexpectedly prog.
