Since he left DT, I think Sherinian has done some really awesome stuff. He took the lessons and skills gained from ACOS and FII and made a great prog-rocker out of himself.
Be it with Planet X or his amazing solo music, Sherinian impresses me at every turn.
What do you guys think?
-
Planet X :hefdaddy
(Insert 15/16 over 4/4 headbang emoticon here)
-
PlanetX is really, really good stuff, agreed.
rumborak
-
I was just listening to Quantum yesterday and being absolutely slayed by the polymetrics. I think having Virgil Donati and Derek Sherinian is perhaps too much goodness for one band.
-
I like what I´ve heard of his solo stuff. Planet X I don´t like that much but maybe because I need more technical-musical knowledge to really appreciate it.
-
Falling Into Infinity would have been soooo different had Derek been allowed to be himself
His solo stuff/Planet X is top notch. Easily my favorite of all DT member side projects/solo work
-
From what I have heard, Planet X rocks. Really great stuff.
-
Planet X is awesome.

Both bodies of work fall into a category of stuff I generally find somewhat interesting and enjoyable, but I'm never really blown away. On the other hand I can never remember hearing anything and being really disappointed either.
-
The reason I cannot listen to 2 consecutive Planet X songs is the lack of melodies. It has its impressive moments but gets boring after a while.
-
{{is a huge fan
-
As I've said since he joined, Derek is a great guy, just not the right guy for Dream Theater.
I've liked his work so much more since he left, although I think the last CD I have is Quantum (so I'm not very current).
I think Derek was very smart in surrounding himself with a stellar supporting cast on most of his albums.
-
Planet X is great. Virgil Donati is one of my favorite drummers as well.
I just looked on wiki. When did TMac rejoin?
-
When I was in college, I took an American Film class, and for one of my projects, I took the 1922 version of "The Phantom of the Opera", and remade the soundtrack using Planet X songs. It got a perfect score :lol
So yeah, :metal
-
i have all 3 Planet X studio albums as well as Live From Oz. i also have all the Sherinian solo albums and i love them all. the best being Planet X - Moonbabies & Quantum; solo - Planet X, Blood of the Snake, and Molecular Heinosity. I like how Planet X dont have a full-time bassist, as all the ones theyve played with are stellar. Also glad to hear Tony McAlpine is coming back!
his work is by far, the most interesting outside of Dream Theater, (with JR's solo stuff second). As much as i like Falling into Infinity, it's not entirely representative of him.
it's funny though, when i was new-ish to Dream Theater, i avoided FII, only knew a couple of tracks. when i got back into DT early last year after 3 years of very little listening, i remember eventually checking out FII in full. in the time i hadnt listened to DT, i HAD listened to a lot of DS's stuff and remember listening to FII and thinking "oh thats such a Sherinian moment, or sound or whatever". I had never noticed it before, and my appreciation for that album has gone way up.
cant wait for the new Planet X album next year!

This is a pretty cool behind the scenes of the Moonbabies session with Simon Phillips as engineer in his studio.
I love how Simon and Virgil are discussing that one cymbal hit being maybe a bit off in the midst of the gazillion notes Virgil plays. :lol Virgil is such an insane player!

Thanks. Not sure if I've ever seen that.

**FIRST 100 COPIES ARE HAND-SIGNED BY VIRGIL DONATI & DEREK SHERINIAN**
PRE-ORDER NOW! RELEASES 7/21/2023
The long-awaited re-release of the entire Planet X catalog has finally arrived, in the form of one lavishly bundled digipak. This 4-CD set has been re-mastered by Simon Phillips and includes a twenty-page booklet packed with photos, liner notes, and a detailed history of the band and the music.
“In a world of recycled or transient musical ideas, it’s rare for any band to be truly ground-breaking and innovative. Too often, acts create poorly executed retrograde musical concepts that could never be genre-leading. There are a few exceptions, many of whom are more familiar names to the uninitiated than Planet X. Yet this band accomplished what others merely dreamed of – inventing their own genre and leaving a high watermark for others to attempt and equal.”
Featured artists include Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati, Brett Garsed, Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Johnson, Tony MacAlpine, Dave Larue, and Tom Kennedy.
Disc 1: Universe (2000)
Disc 2: Moonbabies (2002)
Disc 3: Live From Oz (2002)
Disc 4: Quantum (2006)

SHERINIAN/PHILLIPS is the musical alliance of Derek Sherinian Official and Simon Phillips Music, whose parallel reputations in virtuosic sonic inventions combine on the backdrop of instrumental genre fusion. Though the two had written and recorded together in the past, commitments to other projects had kept them busy in their own circles for a time. Upon their reunion for the recording of 2020’s The Phoenix, the duo has been going strong with consistent new releases ever since. Now, they are pleased to announce the release of SHERINIAN/PHILLIPS LIVE, which exhibits the pair uniting once again for a collaborative effort, documenting a special concert recorded at The Grape in Ventura, California on August 29th, 2022. The set is due out on August 25th, 2023 on InsideOutMusic.
You can check out the performance of “Aurora Australis” now here:

& here: https://youtu.be/FPimDDSEchs
Joining Sherinian/Phillips are fellow creatives Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal on guitar and Ric Fierabracci on bass to round out the lineup of the evening. Several tracks from the latest studio album offering, Vortex, made their way into the set, such as the title track “Vortex”, “Seven Seas”, and “Aurora Australis” (the original recording of which featured Bumblefoot), alongside other instrumentals.
SHERINIAN/PHILLIPS LIVE has every note - planned or jammed - captured like lightning in a bottle, taking listeners to the moment these sounds sparked from their instruments. The live performance sits naturally in a rock context, while reminiscent of jazz fusion concert structures, with room for each musician to stand out in a solo space, each carrying and trading unique melodies along the way.
Derek Sherinian: “After 20 years of making albums together, it was a great pleasure bringing this music to life with Simon for the first time.”
The album will be available in the following formats:
Black Vinyl | Ltd. CD Digipak | CD Jewelcase (North America)

Yes, at least on itunes.
-
Sherinian/Phillips live has me intrigued. Will definitely check it out.
-
Definitely more interesting news than a remaster.
-
I was just listening to Quantum yesterday and being absolutely slayed by the polymetrics. I think having Virgil Donati and Derek Sherinian is perhaps too much goodness for one band.
And DT rejected them both...
-
To be fair, Sherinian leveled up as a player after leaving DT. But Minnemann and Donati were my top choices at the time to replace Portnoy. Subsequently I've grown even more fond of Wildoer and Lang as well.
-
To be fair, I'd say Mangini is just as technically advanced as Virgil, just with a different approach. As for Derek, the guy can play really well but Jordan is on another level. Also, Virgil was the main writer for Planet X anyway, his solo stuff sounds just like that, it's not like Derek was a huge creative force for it or DT.
-
Yeah, in terms of sheer chops JR is above most anybody else other than some of the top-flight classical, jazz, and session players.
-
Preordered the anthology set. I have Universe and Quantum but I remember never being able to find a cheap cd copy of Moonbabies to save my life back in the day.
-

Can't find a reason not to get this. Decent line up.

I love Derek's fusion side a lot more than 90% of his work in Dream Theater. I'd have preferred Marco or Virgil too, but Dream Theater wanted a bandmate which I'm not sure if those guys are as much as I love them.
-
some funny edits happening in the music that don't correspond with the video :rollin
-
Was Planet X too advanced/technical for their time?
I've been revisiting their discography and I just don't know why they weren't more successful. Now you have bands like Arch Echo, Periphery, Animals as Leaders, etc. were they plat complex music, insane time sigs, etc..Goind through Universe right now and it's heavy, groovy, and great play by everyone and has that "djenty" feel like those bands I mentioned before.

The fun thing is that even Derek, around the time they were promoting the first SOA album, said in an interview that the Planet X stuff got way too complex and it wasn't that enjoyable for him to play. More recently, though, in true Derek fashion, he said he would love to make another PX record :lol

I love it and would see it live, but it's not a popular music form.

Finally had the time to give this one a spin. Excellent playing from all musicians but I think the tunes don't stray much from their studio versions. Still a highly enjoyable record.

I don't think that's a contradiction. Music can be fun to create, record and listen to, and yet be somewhat unenjoyable to perform live. I can totally see how that would apply to PX material. Alex Machacek, who played with them for a while, compared playing a PX live gig to running an obstacle course.
-
Or maybe Derek was alluding to the fact that PX music was becoming more complex and less musical. If you compare Universe, Moobabies and Quantum, I think that's what happened to their music over time. And I think it has to do with less Tony Macalpine in the songwriting credits in the sequence of albums. Maybe Derek would like to make another PX album more in the vein of the first 2 (my faves, specially Universe).
-
I wish I could find the interview right now, as I don't remember the exact words he used, but it seemed to me like he meant it in a negative way. Like saying PX was cool but became too complicated just for the sake of it and that he didn't really enjoy that whole thing too much. Of course, opinions/feelings change through the years, and I'm sure his current statements about wanting to make another album are genuine, it's just a bit funny considering he dissed the band/music a few years ago.
Worth mentioning is the fact that this interview happened during the promotional cycle for the first SOA record, when they were convinced they were the new kings of prog metal and that the band would last for years to come :rollin
-
Sadly, that kinda sounds like Derek. Sons of Anachrony were so cool at the moment that he'd diss his other bands just to try and build them up.
