I have spent the last 2 days watching these 6 movies and they are awesome (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2 for people that don't know what this is).
All of the movies would probably be in my top 15. Discuss and appreciate.
-
Kevin Smith is awesome, and I love his movies. I still need to see Chasing Amy, but the rest are great. Clerks changed my life.
-
Decent movies, but definitely overrated.
-
Seen all of 'em except Chasing Amy and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. But yeah, I love all the rest of the series. The original Clerks is my overall favorite.
-
I am a huge Kevin Smith fan. I have all of his movies, two out of the three books he's written, his Batman graphic novel that he did with Walt Flannagin (Fanboy in the View Askewniverse- the guy that alway goes 'Tell 'em, Steve-Dave!") and I have the first two Evening With Kevin Smith DVDs. Clerks is my favourite film of his uin general and ack And Miri Make A Porno was great as well.
-
WTF dudes? Chasing Amy is his best movie! (If not the funniest.) See it!
-
I know, I know!
-
The View Askewniverse films are definitely great. Each of them is very enjoyable to watch.
-
I do love all the Kevin Smith films as well as his books but I do hope future movies are better than
Zac and Miri make a Porno. I must say it is the only DVD of his that I will wait to be in a bargain bin!
-
I dunno, I thought it was pretty good. Also, I didn't know he wrote books.
-
Zack and Miri was cute. I liked it.
-
You just liked it cuz you got to see Jay's dong. ;)
-
Zach and Miri is not a View Askewniverse movie. It was funny, but the story was a bit flat.
-
Never seen any of those movies. :lol
-

I 100% agree.
-

HOW DID YOU KNOW, JUDE?
-
-
I thought Zack and Miri was pretty good. Not really what I expected going in, but good all the same.
Also, if anyone hasn't seen them, the Evening With Kevin Smith videos are incredibly entertaining.
-
Clerks is my second favorite movie. :metal
-
:-*

:neverusethis:
-
Clerks II is amazing. (Better than the original IMO)
-
Clerks II is amazing. (Better than the original IMO)
I actually didn't think so. I think Clerks II had more heart than Clerks 1, but I felt like in that way the sequel sorta missed the point. What I liked about Clerks 1 was the satire and social/cultural commentary.
-
I'm from NJ so of course Kevin Smith's movies played a huge role in my teenage years. And I love every single one of them. Although Clerks and Dogma are my favorites.
"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers."
-
I've seen all of the View Askewniverse flicks except Chasing Amy, love em all.
"This job would be great if it wasn't for the fucking customers."
ah yes, the battlecry of everyone everywhere who has ever worked in any sort of retail position
-
I've seen all of them except Chasing Amy. They're definitely toward the top of my favorite movies list.
-
Why has no one seen Chasing Amy?
-
Why has no one seen Chasing Amy?
I have. >.>
-
Why has no one seen Chasing Amy?
I've seen exactly one scene: the one where Silent Bob speaks.
-
Silent Bob wouldn't shut up in that scene.
-
I've seen Dogma and Clerks II, good stuff. I should really see more... :blush
-
Why has no one seen Chasing Amy?
I have. Good flick.
I think the only one of them I haven't seen is Mallrats.
-
Usually Mallrats is the first movie people see of Kevin Smith's flicks.
Smith's new film, A Couple Of Dicks comes out in February and stars Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (the drug dealer that Jay and Silent Bon run into when they get to Hollywood).
-
Well he didn't write it, so I wouldn't call it a Kevin Smith film. But I am looking forward to it.
-
I dunno, I thought it was pretty good. Also, I didn't know he wrote books.
It is good...maybe I'm just getting too old! :D
His books are in part copies of on line blogs just in book form.
Silent Bob speaks - The collected writings of Kevin Smith released 2005
My Boring Ass Life released 2008
Also, if anyone hasn't seen them, the Evening With Kevin Smith videos are incredibly entertaining.
[/quote]
These DVDs are great for anyone who will never see Kevin live, I must say I loved him talking about his experiences with Prince.
-
I know the Jay rap by heart. Lol.
-
Actually my first was Clerks; I didn't even know about Mallrats until after I finished Clerks.
-
I watched all of them in order. I thought it would be the best as their might be a continuos story. Turns out there is no major connection between the films. There is a bit though.
-
The only real connection I've been able to see is Jay and Silent Bob being in most of the canonical View Askewniverse movies.
-
Buncha savages in this town.
-
I actually watched all of these in a day with a big group of people a few weeks ago. It was awesome. I mean, I'd seen them all before but never in a row... and my perspective on Chasing Amy changed a lot.
-
I grew up going to the mall in Mallrats, all I really remember is the elevator and those damn neon palm trees. Now it has had major major renovations and is a really really nice mall.
-
It always annoyed me that the mall in Mallrats isn't actually in Jersey. Wtf? We have a million malls here. The dirt mall, on the other hand...
-
Dogma is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. Brilliant, epic, hilarious stuff.
However, that's the only View Askewniverse movie I've seen. What should I see next?
-
Clerks
-

Obviously a huge fan here .. I've attended 2 evenings with Kevin Smith at the Count Basie theater in Red Bank
Own all the films with Dogma being my favorite
Bethany: I don't mean to sound ungrateful... but what are you doing hanging around?
Jay: We're here to pick up chicks.
Bethany: Excuse me?
Jay: We figure an abortion clinic is a good place to meet loose women. Why else would they be there unless they like to fuck?
-

It was filmed in the city in Minnesota that I lived in prior to moving to New Hampshire last year.

Own all the films with Dogma being my favorite
I remember seeing Dogma in the theater 3 times on its opening weekend.
"No pleasure, no rapture, no exquisite sin greater -- than central air"
-
I just saw Clerks a few days ago and liked it. Couple of hilarious parts, but there were plenty of parts that looked like the actors were in a play, rather than a movie. Still pretty good though. Not sure if I'd put it on the pedestal that a lot of other people put it on. Dogma is pretty funny as well. I'll see if Netflix has any more of these.
-
Cool to see a thread like this resurrected. I for am a big Kevin Smith fan (sans Cop Out) and the Askewniverse films especially. Never quite sure which I would rank as my favorite. Possibly Chasing Amy or Dogma, although I've been watching Mallrats a hell of a lot lately.
-
Anyone here seen Red State?
I haven't followed Smith in a while. If I remember correctly, after his hockey flick Hit Somebody apparently he wants to give up the director's chair? Anyone have any more info on this?
Also, for those of you with Netflix, there's a great two-hour Q&A on the instant queue entitled "Too Fat for 40," where he answers just one question. Not available anywhere else, as far as I can tell.
-
I used to be big into the View Askewniverse flicks as well. If I had to pick a favorite I'd probably go with Mallrats, although I love them all. Chasing Amy is probably my least favorite although I recognize that it's his best work from a film-making/story-telling standpoint. I just don't find it as funny or entertaining as the rest.
"It's the third nipple that does it."
"Oh, you have a third nipple?"
"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! IT'S AS CLEAR AS DAY!"

I grew up and live in Jersey. Kevin is very good friends with my cousin. Both grew up down the NJ Atlantic Highlands and we are all roughly the same age. I have met Kevin on several occasions. He is just as funny in real life and is really a laid back and also really smart dude. Great guy. another leser known film by Kevin (Jersey Girl) is not part of the askiew series but pretty decent.
Red State is awesome. Lots of people will be pissed off by it and I am suprised it hasnt raised more outrcies like Dogma did.
I cant count ho many times I have seen all his movies, but IMHO, Clerks is the best, followed by Chasing Amy, Dogma & Mallrats.

I'ma fuck this bitch, I'll fuck this bitch...I'll fuck anything that moves!

Superdude, can you tell us your thoughts on the clitoris?
-
I haven't seen Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob, or Chasing Amy yet, so if that's from one of those you're askin' the wrong Jew.

Good god man, see those movies. Now.
-
I've seen a certain part in the middle of Dogma though, when the main characters are on the train. Love the Silent Bob line, but disappointed that that was all Smith decided to do for that film.

See the movies, you won't be disappointed.

I'll answer for him.
I am the master of the clit. I am the clit commander! I make that shit work. Remember this fuckin face, cause whenever you see clit, you'll see this fuckin face.

Watching Jay and Silent Bob right now. And on that note, the video I'm watching links to something called "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back Harder." Anyone know what that is/if it's worth watching?
-
Haven't seen Mall Rats, but as for the rest...
Dogma
Clerks II
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Chasing Amy
Clerks
Jersey Girl
And to give some perspective, I really like Jersey Girl and love Clerks.

To be fair, Zack and Miri doesn't qualify as a View Askew film, and I'm not sure Jersey Girl does either.
-
Oh, you're right, neither does, I guess I just ranked all the films Smith has written.
-
haha i wanted to make this thread but figured it was already done... and was too lazy to search.
I cant place the movies in order from fav to least fav...
well mall rats is near the bottom...
idk
oh and
What the fuck is the internet?
-
I think I'm around halfway through Jay and Silent Bob so far. It's good, only one complaint: they overdo Dante's refrain waaaaaaaaay too much in the View Askewniverse. Like in Clerks it was funny and it was cool how they wrapped it up in the "moral" of the story, but it kinda loses its meaning taken completely outta context.
-
Its hard to rank the View Askew series, as I love them all. I enjoy every Smith film (outside of Cop Out).
-
Cop Out was not written by Smith, he only directed it.
-
I'm aware of that Nick. Doesn't change the fact that it is indeed a "Kevin Smith" film.
-
I consider Kevin Smith films to be films he's written, not just anything he's been involved with.
-
I consider Kevin Smith films to be films he's written, not just anything he's been involved with.
I agree, but only because I consider Kevin Smith to be a writer who just happens to direct, not a director.

And I agree with your reasoning, but only because I consider you one of the chosen people.

"Well, look at these two morose motherfuckers right here. Looks like somebody shit in their cereal... Bong!!!"

:| :|

Everyone on earth knows that the director's name is put above a film first and foremost, regardless of who writes it.
The only exception is a producer credit and that is always billed as "presents".

I still consider Kevin Smith a writer who just happens to direct (and should stick to directing what he writes) as opposed to a director.
-
Be that as it may...Cop Out IS a Kevin Smith film, regardless of who wants to accept it or not :lol

Eh, it's a kevin smith directed film.
None the less it has no part in a view askew thread.
-
Nor do Jersey Girl or Zack and Miri, but I consider them honorary entries as they have well balanced comedy/drama bits that make it feel similar to the other films. Plus both are technically "View Askew Productions", so you could say that puts them in there somewhere...not to mention "Vulgar", which Smith had little to do with creatively but which I feel is certainly in the same universe.

Is Cop Out a view askew production?
-
No. Scott Mosier had no involvement.

No. Scott Mosier had no involvement.
So I win. :)
Now let us continue to discus View Askew films.
Which did you like better, Jedi? Or the Empire Strikes Back?
-
LotR
-
LotR
Dude................there's only one return and it's not of the king, it's of the Jedi.
-
Fuckin' A.
-
Empire had the better ending. I mean, Luke gets his hand cut off, finds out Vader's his father, Han gets frozen and taken away by Boba Fett. It ends on such a down note. And that's what life is: a series of down notes. All Jedi had was a bunch of Muppets.
-
I believe in a firm ruling class, especially since I rule.

LotR
Dude................there's only one return and it's not of the king, it's of the Jedi.
Fuck both. Planet of the Apes slays everything.

*sniffs around thread*
Why does it smell like shoe polish?

You know this tastes like piss and flies don't it?

BUMP
Rewatching the Veiw Askew movies. (because I haven't blabbed enough about it in other threads...)
Chasing Amy. omfg :heart
Apparently they are working on Mallrats 2 and then Clerks 3 is set to start after that.
-
I never knew there was a view askew thread! Im a huge fan. Jay and Silent Bob are both from a town close by to me so the Secret Stash store is also very close and a lot of the filming of the movies was in nearby areas.

For some reason I thought it was the other way around, clerks 3 first then mallrats 2, but I wasnt really following. Either way, Im pumped for both!
-
Apparently (and I don't have a link sadly...) it was set to be that way but the mall that Kevin Smith wanted to film in "won't be around for long'... so they flipped the filming and focused on Mallrats first.
-
I like the films, but I feel that in some ways (and I know this will sound condescending but I don't intend it that way), I have outgrown them.
In other words, they spoke to me at a very specific time of my life. I love them, but they aren't the same anymore for me, as a group.
But Dogma is awesome.

I can see that. That comedy is specific and mostly toilet humor so I can see how one would grow out of it.
My rankings:
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (this is actually my favorite movie of all time although that opinion changes, Kevin Smith was also in the movie theater on release day when I was there to see it (he was walking out as I walked in, I've always wondered why he was there)
Mallrats - My high school english teacher grew up with the guys and Ben Affleck stayed at his house while filming since he was not yet famous
Clerks 2 - The beginning is essentially a drive down route 35 which is the main highway that runs through my town and to Red bank
Dogma - and to Red Bank where the Church is and I had one of my first make out sessions with a girl on a bench outside that church.
Clerks - My high school English teacher's sister is the girl who comes into the store when the muscle guy is in there giving them a speech about getting in shape.
Chasing Amy - Also filmed in Red Bank, the apartment they live in is on top of a CD store that was really awesome, bought all my used Van Halen albums there! It's also across the street from their comic book and movie memorabilia store Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash.

Completely agree. I still like Chasing Amy as well.

Yes, that's a well-made film. Probably his best.

Figured it was time to watch'em all again.
Started with Clerks.
Now Mall Rats
:metal
-
I just finished his book Tough Shit last night so I may start with Clerks and then Mallrats tonight as well....it has been a while....
Currently watching the DT Bootleg Chile 02/06. Great concert!
Poor Kevin Smith I just read what happened at ComicCon in San Diego....more amo for his next book...
-
hmm what happened in comic con? I follow Kevin Smith on FB and don't recall seeing anything although I may have missed it.
I'm excited for Mallrats 2.
-
^^He did tweet about it, or just type Kevin Smith in google, it is the top story, and he has already done a podcast on it.
Quick recap..He was to follow a Star Wars Panel and right before they finished J.J. Abrams invited the entire audience to a Star Wars concert, the room emptied of a fair chunk of the audience straight away.
Kevin Smith admitted he would have loved to have cancelled his own show and gone, but he ended up doing his show and was left with about 2000+ people, or 1/3 of the room. He has since said it is great material for him in the future.
Anyway last night watched Clerks and Mallrats for the first time in.... a few years at least.
Randal has the best lines in Clerks I especially loved ....
Randal in the video store reading a newspaper where a customer wants him to tell her which is the best movie...
Randal: I don't appreciate your ruse ma'am.
Customer: I beg your pardon?
Randal: Your ruse, your cunning attempt to trick me.
Customer: I was only pointing out that you weren't paying attention to what I was saying.
Randal: And I hope it feels good.
Customer: You hope what feels good?
Randal: I hope it feels so good to be right. There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?
Customer: Well this is the last time I rent here.
Randal: You'll be missed.
Customer: Screw You!
Randal: (Yelling after customer has left the store, from the doorway) Hey, you're not allowed to rent here anymore!
Jay: Yeeeaaahhhhhh!
Or during Rooftop Hockey, they lose the only ball.
Dante: (Calling to people on the ground) Any balls down there?
Mewes: Only the biggest pair you've ever seen, Dingleberry!
Gold! :corn (I turned the subtitles on after Dante mumbled something I needed to rewind to catch what he says....I never noticed subtitled movies don't add the curse words apparently there was no swearing during Clerks...)
I forgot during Mallrats, Mewes starts calling Silent Bob Lunchbox. I love this cracked me up all over again.....
Tonight Chasing Amy and Dogma....
-
lol lunchbox, J is the best
-
Yeeeaaaahhhh!
-
In the last two days Chasing Amy, Dogma, Clerks 2 and Jay and Silent Bob strike back.....later today Jersey Girl and then non askew Zach and Miri and Red State.
So Mallrats 2 is about to or is now filming, will be interesting to see what they do with the characters especially since the credits of Mallrats had a sequence showing
where they all end up.
I also forgot during Clerks 2 Jay and the Goodbye Horses scenes, he is so good in these movies!
And I had completely forgotten about the references to The Fugitve (one of my all time fave movies) during Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back! :corn
