Every once in a while, out of the murky and over-populated waters of "nu-metal", a great band rises that deserves to be heard.
Deftones is this band.
From haunting and beautiful atmospheres to relentless and driven metal, this band is definately one of the most unique and distinctive bands around. Although their newest album is being delayed due to the accident the bassist was in, their past stuff is definately enough to keep me interested.
Favorite album: White Pony
Favorite songs: Passenger, Around the Fur, Lucky You, Street Carp
-
No offense, and of course this is just my opinion, but I really, really don't like these guys.
Of course, I'm sure I could list a bunch of bands that you don't like as well. All just a matter of taste, but these guys rub me the wrong way. Maybe I haven't heard the right stuff, but I've listened to most of their studio albums and was never impressed.
-
Definitely used to be a top 5 band, and definitely the best thing Nu-Metal has to offer, honestly.
-
Yep, definitely the best nu metal band. I love Chi Moreno's poetic lyrics and vocal delivery, he's what makes the band in my opinion. White Pony is easily their masterpiece but their newest "Saturday Night Wrist" is also amazing. I can't wait for Eros.
-
Andrenaline FTW
-
I really like Deftones but the only album I can really sit and listen to all the way through is 'White Pony'. The s/t and Saturday Night Wrist also have some cool material on it. I wouldn't exactly call them nu-metal though. They were just pigeonholed in there when that genre was popular.
-
I honestly couldn't give you a pretty reliable opinion of these guys; I've heard only two original songs of theirs from the Matrix Reloaded and Little Nicky soundtracks respectively (there's a second acoustic Deftones song on Little Nicky but I never listened to it), and one Sevendust song where Moreno provided guest vocals. Where should I start?
-
Knife Prty.
-
The Deftones were my favourite band through my teen years.

The White Pony is probably their most well thought of album but i rank adrenaline and around the fur just as highly.
Also,
Favorite album: White Pony
Favorite songs: Passenger, Around the Fur, Lucky You, Street Carp
Jesus, those are pretty much my two least favourite Deftones songs.
My favourite songs would be
Adrenaline -Birthmark, lifter, 7 words
Around The Fur - My Own Summer, Lotion, Be quiet and drive
The White Pony - Digital bath, knife prty, passenger
Self Titled - Hexagram, battle axe, deathblow
Saturday Night Wrist - Cherry Waves, rapture, hole in the earth
-
They played this song on "Retro Rock" on Music Choice when I was playing guess the band. I was like who the f are these people and why are they on this station? That album was released in 1995... I'm guessing they were the ones that pretty much got the genre rolling.
Unfortunately, I hate the genre, so they suck.

:metal :metal
love the chorus. So far I dig the first two songs that heard from the new album.
-
The new album Diamond Eyes is pretty good! I love the more Meshuggah-ish sound of the guitars, and all the choruses are awesome. Great atmosphere as well, once again.
-
definitely the best thing Nu-Metal has to offer, honestly.
-
One of my friend's showed me this song by the Deftones, claimed it to be Prog Metal. Well the rest of the story shouldn't be told, I'll leave it there.
-
Funny. I saw the thread and was just going to post "Knife Prty;" nuff said. Turns out I already did 6 months ago.
Knife Prty.
-
I really like I'd say 20% of their material the rest I usually pass on.
-
My ex tried to get me into them... pretty stale from what I recall.
-
Diamond Eyes is amazing!
-
Looking forward to this album! I won't be listening to the leaked tracks though.

Splent no likey something not tied to 70s prog or recital music?!?

Diamond Eyes is amazing!
Just gave the album its first listen. I gotta say, the amazing songs are amazing, but there is some filler on here.
-
I haven't listened to them in forever (last album I got was White Pony) but used to LOVE them and still listen once in a blue moon. I always loved Around the Fur and Adrenaline, but couldn't fully get into WP as much as I loved a few tracks.
-
Around the Fur is my fav album. then its
White Pony
Adrenaline
I think afterwards with these albums they went downhill...
Deftones
Saturday Night Wrist
However the 2 tracks (Diamond Eyes, Rocket Skates) from Diamond Eyes are amazing. I'm really pumped for the new album.

I'm loving this album at the moment! Will post more feelings later...

I sort of question the "nu metal" tag put on Deftones...the first album sure, but most of the rest goes well beyond the genre.

Yeah i don't really see them as "nu metal". I remember the whole Limp Bizkit/Korn/Deftones thing was very popular in 90s but I still see the Deftones sound a lot different from the LB and Korn.
Still haven't gotten a chance to get Diamond Eyes but I'm hoping to pick it up sometime this week. The two tracks I heard were amazing.
-
What's the deal with Chi? Is he still in a coma? :(
-
Yeah, seems like it :sadpanda:

What's the deal with Chi? Is he still in a coma? :(
i hear he is getting better... opens his eyes and nods etc. Hopefully he'll recover fully soon

This.
The lyrics in Risk and 976 Evil certainly seem to be about him which really adds some depth to the tracks. I'm very impressed with this cd, not a bad track on it and vocal hooks galore!
-
On my way to FYE to pick up the new album now :) Ill let everyone know after 3-4 listens.
-
1. New album is awesome
2. Seeing them in a club on Wednesday...wooh!
-
Diamond Eyes is amazing!!!!! Deftones did an amazing job on the album! Keep improving Chi!
-
The chorus in beauty queen is sensational!
Also, the riffs on this album! Stephen's best performance on a deftones album so far.
-
Damn, this album is great. I think it flows really well and there is not a bad song on there. I love the use of 8 string guitars. It def. has that Meshuggah vibe but with the melodic vocals that Chino always brings in. This is def. their best since White Pony.
My fav tracks: Diamond Eyes, Beauty School, Rocket Skates, Risk, 976–EVIL
-
I'm impressed to see the tolerance/appreciation of perceived top40 on the music side these days. A Deftones thread right next to a Korn thread? If we could time our posts so that a Limp Bizkit thread lined up snugly against these two I think we could trigger another forum crash :lol

The consistency is one of it's best qualities. The previous two albums had some great highlights but were brought down by a few average songs.

Except Deftones is awesome
-
We were bangin' some Limp Bizkit at a party yesterday. Say what you will, but it's great party music. Chocolate Starfish has an amazing production to show off your sub!
-
Limp Bizkit are just the worst band...ever, pretty much
Btw, did I mention I'm seeing Deftones in a small little club tomorrow

Somee of LBs old stuff is pretty cool tho but have fun at that Deftones show. 4 years ago, I saw them with Korn for only 10 bucks and it was a def a good time :)

Still can't share any LB love though I'm afraid...AND NEVER WILL! :P

Listening to DE more and more, realizing its actually a very good album. I think it really flows pretty nicely throughout and the songs are all pretty strong for the most part.

Great setlist, and it sounds like it was a lot of fun.
-
Just want to bump this thread and say that more people need to recognize this band. They absolutely transcend the nu-metal genre. White Pony, Diamond Eyes, and Around the Fur are all incredible.

You say that like I just go around shitting on bands without ever hearing them.
1. I never liked the single from White Pony when it first came out, still don't.
2. Hearing my older brother listen to Adrenaline was enough for me to know I will never like this band. What turned me off? The screams.
3. Deftones are not awesome.

This! I'm really excited, Diamond Eyes was awesome (though not my favorite). The article states he's still comatose for the most part; making progress, but definitely not out of the woods yet. I remember that quote by Chino in the article from a while back (or I've got a really weird case of deja vu), I don't think that's new, him being able to lift a leg and whatnot but not speak or anything, so maybe he's improved further upon that. But we probably won't hear Eros for a while to come, if ever. Although I really do hope that Chi recovers and we can hear him in all his glory on Eros... :-\
Anyway, here's to the new album. Excite!
-

"Every day is different, and he keeps on fighting. It’s been three years already, and he’s making small advancements, daily, but he can’t speak or communicate. Sometimes he can follow small instructions, like lifting a leg or a hand, so we wish for the best and maintain hope. But no doctor can predict when he’s going to wake up."

Pretty decent live recording of a new song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=VyNBc-_Ctbk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=VyNBc-_Ctbk)

I have been listening to Diamond Eyes non-stop the past few days.
The new songs are sweet, but I can't make a real judgement call until I hear cleaner versions.

Yeah the song is def growing on me :metal
-
Sounds good :metal
Hope they come back to Glasgow on the tour for this album. Their last show here was immense, probably my favourite gig ever.
-
That was sufficiently badass; I wasn't blown away, but I've never been blown away by Deftones' singles before. Diamond Eyes (song) and Rocket Skates both had me thinking 'meh' and I ended up loving the album, so the fact I like this song at all is a very good sign. It's a bit samey, but once again, I thought the same about Skates (though even moreso, and it's still at the bottom of my Diamond Eyes rankings). Anticipating the release.

New album cover reminds me of Saturday Night Wrist.

Heard the two released tracks which are great!
I'll wait until the album comes out to hear the whole thing. I heard the first few seconds of that samples video and the quality was very weak so I stopped it.

Album streaming

it's pretty good!
-
I'm almost finished streaming for the first time... This album has balls. Big, hairy balls. And I would just love to...listen to them some more. Definitely going to need to pre-order this soon so I can start spinning this mofo. It's all awesome. I didn't really think there was a track I thought was bad, and there are some songs that certainly stand out more than others (Goon Squad, Rosemary..a couple others I can't think the name of cause I'm in a library and about to leave), but hardly any down portions of this album.
:metal
:millahhhh
-
:metal
Listened through three times so far. It's sounding pretty damn good already and it usually takes me a good 5-10 listens of an album before I can really get into it and judge it properly. Tempest and Leathers are the standouts for me so far, but I've listened to them both a lot more obviously since they were released earlier.
Some awesome riffs, can't wait to hear some of this stuff live in 3 months time :coolio
-
Rosemary is one of the best songs ever.
-
Listening now, this is really good so far!
-
Not as immediate/direct sounding as Diamond Eyes so this def needs a lot of listens.
-
This is pretty good. Not as good as Diamond Eyes (and kinda sounds like it could be b-sides from Diamond Eyes), but it's still pretty decent. At this point, I'd say it's either a grower or a one of those decent-yet-forgettable albums.
-
I am loving this album more and more. There's one or two songs that I don't like as much as the others (Swerve City hasn't really clicked with me. Yet?), but overall there aren't many times I wasn't completely encompassed and enamored by this music. I really love Romantic Dreams and Poltergeist as well, really interesting tunes. The band has certainly evolved their sound and come into their own over the years. Having been through the album a few times now, I'm happy to say this album will grow on me even more.
P.S. More Romantic Dreams :heart Mm. Yummy stuff.
-
What immediately surfaces is the positive vibe, just like on Diamond Eyes. Chino 2012 sings like a mofo, and the riffs are heavier than ever. Great songs. Great production. I can't find a fault with this record, and it might even surpass Diamond Eyes for me.
-
Well, I think Entombed my be one of my favorite songs of the year. Its been stuck in my head for days.
Overall I like the new album a lot and think its a solid addition to the Deftones discography.
-
I'd give this a solid 7/10.
-
Amazing album.
-
Bought it. Beginning was a bit filler-feeling but Graphic Nature and Tempest are kicking my ass.
-
I think the first 5 song-run is so epic. "Entombed" and "Poltergeist" in particular really kicks my ass. Second half of the album is not quite as good for me, but still very solid. "Tempest" is really cool, some other sweet tracks as well.
-
Well, I think the second half is fantastic, but overall this is another solid album by them. I'm satisfied.
-
I prefer the second half of the album. Tempest-Gauze-Rosemary is just godly.
Great album overall
-
I've been listening to the new album non-stop the past week and the only two tracks which are just so-so for me are Graphic nature and goon squad. The album is around 52 minutes, so I think there was room to trim it down a little, but luckily Itunes lets me trim it down myself. Even the first 2 tracks have grown on me and I pretty much love all the rest.
Tempest-Gauze-Rosemary is just godly.
Amen to that. That 3 song run in incredible and I also love Leathers-Poltergeist-Entombed, with Entombed being my favorite song on the album.
I still think Diamond Eyes is a better album, since I love every song from beginning to end, but the new album is still pretty decent and I constantly want to keep listening to it.
-
Not long to go until they start their European tour now. Seeing them in Glasgow on Friday night, can't wait! :metal
-
I wish they would come here, but they aren't. :(
-
Diamond Eyes or Koi No Yokan?
GO!
I'm going with Diamond Eyes. It just melts my face :metal
There seems to be a lot more going on musically in Koi though. I also love all the subtle textures/layers that are added in and Tempest is probably my favorite song out out of all the songs from Diamond Eyes and Koi.
-
It's impossible to pick for me. I know Koi a bit better and it was my first Deftones album, so maybe that one. Diamond Eyes is not far behind though.
-
Definitely Koi No Yokan for me - the standout tracks (eg. Tempest and Leathers) are much better than anything on Diamond Eyes for me.
-
Koi is good but Diamond Eyes is Godly! :metal
-
Koi is good but Diamond Eyes is Godly! :metal
Agreed.
Don't get me wrong, I like Koi a lot, but I consider Diamond Eyes to be a perfect album.
-
Amazing last night in Glasgow :metal

^^^ not bad, but I would have rather had them do a video for Entombed.
-
Let's start this thread up again!
White Pony is their best record. Everything they have done since and will do will be compared to White Pony. Everyone wants another White Pony. I must say i wouldn't mind one either ;p
But i think that it wont happen because the band has grown since then. White Pony has this atmospheric, sonic trip-hop element to it that doesn't really seem to be a big part of them anymore. Diamond Eyes had parts that were similar to White Pony, but other then that, it's in the past.
With White Pony, the guitar work was more textured and had more feeling. Same goes for the bass, keyboards etc. For the most part, the songs did not sound Meshuggah, or Mastadon influenced, with big heavy crushing guitar work. That's what i hear on their newer stuff like Koi No Yokan. It's still Deftones of course an i love it. But its not white pony.
I'm just saying all this because it bugs me how so many people will say something like, Koi No Yokan or whatever is like White Pony, when it's not at all. With koi No Yokan all the insturments sounded like they were mixed together, layered upon one another to create a very full and also heavier sound. To me, this sounds like the opposite of White Pony.
Dont get me wrong, i love all their albums. But i kinda do miss that trip-hop element that band used to have. They don't seem to focus as much on creating sonic soundscapes. But i guess that's them. They're doing their own thing and being very successful. I love that. i and many others didn't expect them to be together this long. I love SNW, but it took so long i didn't expect Diamond Eyes to come out so soon, and be such a big hit! SNW got no attention it seemed, then all of a sudden Deftones are huge again! Good Job guys! keep it up!

jesus
Eros has to come out someday. Judging from this song, it's something more to my like, as opposed to Koi no Yokan, which i liked. But this songs sounds more mellowed out, like something from White Pony, a one of a kind album that Deftones have yet to come even close to since. The new album was good, but it sounded to 'chaotic', like there were to many layers and tracks on top of each other going at the same time.
They gotta release Eros. I hope their next album is Eros, maybe they'll go into the studio and finish it up. I really hope so.
-
New album coming out in November.
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/new-deftones-album-pushed-back-to-november/
I'm very eager to hear it, since Koi No Yokan might be my favourite of theirs. I haven't heard all of their albums yet though, but at least about half of the songs from each one.
Sixteen songs is quite a lot though. However, they have consistently put out great albums, so probably this one is too.
-
I'm excited for the new album, but I won't lie: I want to finally get a hold of Eros after this.
-
I like Koi No Yokan, but it sounded too...errrr....full? I guess that describes it. Its good, but compared to something like White Pony its not even close. White Pony is actually a pretty simplistic album, simple riffs, ambient atmosphere, but soooo effective and amazing. Perhaps they should get back into the coke?
-
My two favourite albums are White Pony and Koi No Yokan. I love how they're not sounding like a tired version of themselves these days, but instead keep on experimenting with their ultimately ever-recognizable sound. Next album should be good, as far as I'm concerned they've never released a bad album.
-
Diamond eyes is probably my favorite, but Koi No Yokan is pretty damn good as well.
-
Deftones is such a great band that it's hard to rank the albums. I guess White Pony would be my favorite, but their output is really consistent. The debut is alright (I would say it's good but not great), everything since is great or better though.

Yea, I agree that they've never released a bad album. People put down the self-titled but I think that was just because it came after White Pony. I heard it after obsessing over WP, so I understand that, but its also an amazing album. Dark, just not ethereal like WP was. I'd love another WP, because as I said, there was a symplicity to the music, but Diamond Eyes and KNY are great albums too.
Ever heard the song from Eros they released? I gotta say, its a great song. Its too bad Eros was never released. The song sounds pretty much like a mix of something from WP, DE, and KNY.
-
I got into the band with Diamond Eyes and loved that album so much that I scooped up the rest of the discography after that. I liked Koi No Yokan enough but I think it was coming out just as I was moving on to other bands. It's hard to believe that's a 2012 album. I listened to it so little that it still feels like a really recent release to me.
Loved that song they released from Eros too. Holding out hope we get that whole album someday.
-
So I've been listening to a lot of Deftones lately since I picked up my 8 string and wanted something that's possible to play for me and I must say, I should have checked this band out much sooner. I've heard My Own Summer, Change (In The House of Flies) and Digital Bath before, but never really got deep into their music.
Especially the last two albums are completely mindblowing, Koi No Yokai might be my favourite album to spin atm. I'm super stoked to hear that a new album might be coming out soon.

Didn't know DTF had a Deftones thread, I've been getting into them lately, my drum teacher gave me a copy of White Pony about eight years ago and I totally forgot about them ever since, this month I've been playing Koi No Yokai and Diamond Eyes to death, it's so different from the other alt/nu-metal bands.

White Pony has got to be one of my top 3 all time favorite albums. There is nothing like it. Not even from their other albums.
-
Tbh White Pony is kind of a mixed bag for me. There are some amazing songs and some just outright boring. It wouldn't be in my top 3 Deftones albums for sure.
-
I've always felt White Pony is a bit overrated. I find everything from Saturday Night Wrist onward is more interesting and consistent. I would even say Koi No Yokan is the best thing they've done yet.
-
White Pony has some of their best, but also some songs I either can't stand or just get really boring.
Koi No Yokan, s/t and Diamond Eyes are my top three (no particular order).
-
I've always felt White Pony is a bit overrated. I find everything from Saturday Night Wrist onward is more interesting and consistent. I would even say Koi No Yokan is the best thing they've done yet.
Blasphemy! White Pony is the best!
I love Saturday Night Wrist, a lot of people don't rate it too well, but its great, but I wouldn't say its consistent. It's very start/stop. That's what makes White Pony so beautiful, every song fits perfectly. Very cohesive.
I really like Koi No Yokan. But like I've said earlier, it sounds somewhat too "busy". That's the word I'll use to describe it. Or chaotic. It's still great, but it feels like there are too many things going on at once, like too many guitar tracks on top of one 'another. I don't know if that's actually the case, but that's how it sounds. I'm hoping with this next album they learned to streamline the sound better.
-
White Pony is great, but "Feiticera" has to be their worst song. Never understood how it was chosen to open the record.
With that said, all their albums are great. I'd probably rank the self-titled lowest, though.
-
Feiticera is good. Teenager is lowpoint of the album with Korea following close.
-
Love Feiticeira, I also agree Teenager is one of the worst on the album, along with Elite.
-
Love Feiticeira, I also agree Teenager is one of the worst on the album, along with Elite.
Elite is one of Deftones's best all-out heavy tracks. I just wish it was shorter, as it drags a bit too much towards the end.
-
Probably the reason I dislike it, I'm not the biggest fan of full out heavy vocals, I like some mixed vocals but this one's too much for me.
-
I do get the thing about Feiticeira (or however you write that word). It feels a bit disjointed and weird. It definitely had to grow on me, I didn't like that song at all when I first listened to the album.
-
I always thought Passenger was highly overrated on White Pony. Maybe even my least favorite on the album.

I think it's okay. Not stellar or horrible, just kind of there.
-

Chino's the king of using the "wrong" notes in a way that somehow works, but that song is the one time it just didn't.
-
I honestly love every song on White Pony.
The self-titled was a great album, but disappointing if you go in expecting White Pony. But I really like it.
-
Oh awesome, not sure if this was long ago, but Deftones have been announced to play at Rock Am Ring 2016, probably going there.
-
I honestly love every song on White Pony.

I like all of their other records each in their own way, but White Pony is a permanent for all time top 3 album.

Dodged a bullet there, wow.

Literally.

Biked a few hours ago with Spotify on shuffle, rain pooring harder than ever. Suddenly Rocket Skates comes up on shuffle. Chino, don't fucking tell me I'm soakong wet, I know it.. :'(.
Bump to remind y'all how awesome Rocket Skates, and Diamond Eyes as a whole is.
-
No reminders needed here, that is one kick ass album. I really like that even though Saturday Night Wrist is my favorite, since it came out I've seen each album as really close to being my favorite and it hasn't stopped yet. They're all pretty much in line for number 1. I can't wait to hear some new stuff from the guys.
-
Bump to remind y'all how awesome Rocket Skates, and Diamond Eyes as a whole is.
Might be my least favourite off the album actually, just doesn't have anything that memorable tbh.
-
Dang, personally love it, funny how we perceive things.. :eek
-
I felt the exact same way when it first came out. Nothing was memorable and while I didn't hate it, I didn't listen to it for the longest time and thought it was very lackluster and even a bit boring and samey. But it just clicked one day, I think around the time that Koi was about to release actually. Then again that's not uncommon for me... a lot of my favorite bands and albums I initially disliked and then randomly loved the hell out of and it stuck; quite odd...
-
Yeah, that's how it goes for me aswell, for the most part. But with Rocket Skates, there's not really much to get for me personally, it's just a heavy-ass tune and I like it just for that reason, no thought behind it whatsoever.

Might be just Steph being stoned as usual, but if he's not trolling we know when the new album is gonna hit us. :metal

Awesome! I would be shocked if he would just come up with a random date so I bet it's a legit date. :hat

New song: Prayers/Triangles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAmt6zN9vOk)
-
Cool! Has that atmospheric Koi No Yokan-esque sound in the intro that made that record so fresh-sounding, I'm digging it.
-
These are the types of Deftone's songs that I really love.
-
I furggin' LOVE this! Oh boy I want the new album meow.
ED:
Uhhhh WHOA been out of the loop; totally thought that was just a random new song but there's the album that Steph was talkin' about in all it's glory on iTunes, just teasing me... For anyone else out of the loop:
"Gore" out April 8th
1. Prayers/Triangles
2. Acid Hologram
3. Doomed User (EXPLICIT HIDE YO KIDS)
4. Geometric Headdress
5. Hearts/Wires
6. Pittura Infamante
7. Xenon
8. (L)mirl
9. Gore
10. Phantom Bride
11. Rubicon
I want this shit EVEN MORE MEOW. Jerry Cantrell is supposedly making an apperance on the album but there are no (Featuring) notes on the tracks on iTunes and a quick Google didn't bring anything specific up so...should be an interesting surprise!
-
Cool song! :metal
-
Koi No Yokan was one of my favorite albums of 2012, can't wait to get this one!
That new song was good, and the song titles look awesome!
-
Deftones always has the best song titles.
-
This song is pure bliss. Whenever I am not listening to it I have the urge to just turn it on.
My only gripe is that the mix could do with more bass, but that's probably because Sergio has bass tones that lack the bottom register and overally are not that good imo.
-
Sounds great. Gives me the impression it will be the Deftones i really love. Not that i didn't love Koi No Yokan, i did really like it, but i felt like there were too many layers on top of one another. I like the simpler style of White Pony; so effective.yet simple. This song sounds like it should get radio play.
-
Great song! Can't wait!
-
I don't really 'get' the groove in the verses. I'm constantly losing track of where the '1' is. Sounds to me like the drums are playing in a different time signature than the rest of the instruments or something.
-
PRAAAAAAAAYEEEERS
I'm loving this song man, can't wait for the album.
-
PRAAAAAAAAYEEEERS

For sure. Koi No Yokan is my favourite Deftones album and this would surely make the top 4 there. That's how strong I think this song is. :metal
-
New song - Doomed User (https://blog.siriusxm.com/2016/03/16/deftones-world-premiere-of-new-song-doomed-user-on-octane/)
-
On first listen this one is much weaker than Prayers/Triangles. The chorus is good, but the verses are pretty average stuff when it comes to Deftones.
-
Agreed, not the best first impression, especially compared to P/T which already almost feels like a Deftones classic to me. Though this seems like one of their heavy songs, following the pattern of their releases I reckon there won't be too much songs like this one on the album. Still incredibly hyped.
On another note: My favorites tend to change like every week for Deftones, currently in love with "Prince" big time, currently it's easily my favorite song off my favorite album.
-
New song - Doomed User (https://blog.siriusxm.com/2016/03/16/deftones-world-premiere-of-new-song-doomed-user-on-octane/)
Oooh that riff (start at 16 seconds in)... that's not a usual Deftones riff and it stands out well. Dig it!
-
I still really liked it but I do like Pyramids more. Still very neat and while the continuous, almost ever-present guitar lines are a bit much by the latter half, I still rawked out to it. They do harmonies so well.
-
Interview with the band here: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/deftones-talk-new-album-band-tension-we-like-unnerving-feelings-20160401?page=2
A music video for Prayers/Triangles is apparently coming our way :metal and Hearts/Wires sounds like it's gonna be one fucked up song.
-
Another new song - Hearts/Wires (https://youtu.be/NJbvSmRuV_w)
-
I like mellow/chill deftones these days so I think this album will be right up my alley. Or course when the mood suits me, I go back to the heavy stuff.
-
I like mellow/chill deftones these days so I think this album will be right up my alley. Or course when the mood suits me, I go back to the heavy stuff.
There's definitely some heavy oldschool Deftones stuff on it though not that much yeah, overall it's pretty chill.
Anyone listen to the album yet? It's now on Spotify. I've heard it twice in full now and I can easily admit this one's in my top 3 albums of 2016 so far, and very likely as the #1. Based on these very positive first impressions, I divided the songs into 3 categories, it's a damn consistent album but there's a few absolute standouts and two songs I like slightly less.
Tier 1:
Hearts/Wires
Rubicon
Gore
Tier 2:
Prayers/Triangles
Geometric Headdress
Acid Hologram
Phantom Bridge
(L)MIRL
Pittura Infamante
Tier 3:
Xenon
Doomed User
This was, along with Affinity and The Astonishing, my most anticipated 2016 release and it hasn't disappointed one bit :metal can't believe it.
-
Listening for the first time right now. I'm not sure I'll be able to rank after one listen, but I'll give it another spin on my way to lectures today and hopefully I'll be able to make my initial ranking then.
Hearts/Wires is definitely gonna be a top 3 song though.
-
The new album has some good songs but so far it hasn't made as strong an impression on me as the last two albums have. Gonna have to give it some more time.
-
The new album has some good songs but so far it hasn't made as strong an impression on me as the last two albums have. Gonna have to give it some more time.
This definitely seems to be my first impression. I was blown away by KNY and Diamond Eyes. Here I'm just like "this seems ok, I might like it after a few listens" on most of the songs.
-
Looking at the past 3 albums, Diamond Eyes was an album I loved, with strong writing from beginning to end. KNY was very decent and had some really strong parts, but lacked here and there.
Then here comes Gore, an album I was highly looking forward to, but for me its just ok. There definitely are some very strong songs on the album, but a lot of it just sounds like noise. Just wayward, unfocused and all over the place. I just don't find the songwriting very strong.
I really like Prayers/triangles, phantom bride and rubicon, but the rest just doesn't do it for me. I was ready to really love this album, but I will enjoy it as much as I can non the less.
-
I'm really enjoying it. Phantom Bride is my favorite with the title track being my least favorite and everything else is pretty much right under Phantom Bride for me.
-
Phantom Bride was the only track that grabbed me on first listen. Don't think I'm gonna like this one anywhere near as much as Koi No Yokan sadly.
-
It's a good album, Phantom Bride is amazing as is Prayers/Triangles. Definitely very atmospheric. Not sure if it's better than Koi No Yokan, but I like it a lot anyways.
-
I love it through and through. There are a few moments that dip and some songs that I don't like as much but that's exactly the same as Koi and Diamond are for me so this is pretty much right there with them, which is saying a lot considering I love the vast majority of those albums. I think this trio of albums fits together very nicely. I can't say much more because just as DE and KNY, it'll take a while to sink in but the immediate favorite for me is definitely Hearts/Wires.
-
...the immediate favorite for me is definitely Hearts/Wires.
Yeah no kidding. The last album was amazing and is easily in my top 3 Deftones albums, but I don't think it holds any all time favorite Deftones songs of mine, maaaybe Gauze/Swerve City but I doubt it. Hearts/Wires, while still new and potentially overhyped by me, sounds like it could be one of my absolute favorites, I love everything about it.
-
I'm still not feeling this album that much after three listens. Prayers/Triangles, Doomed User and Hearts/Wires are amazing, but the rest is kinda not growing on me at all at this point. And that has never happened to me with a Deftones album before.
-
Gore/Phantom Bride, P/T, H/W and (L)MIRL are topping the list for me atm.
-
Listened the new album through once, and it's pretty decent.
Not nearly as good as Koi No Yokan or White Pony but it's pretty good.
I will eventually spin it again, and see if it grows on me more!
Oh, and Hearts/Wires is pretty damn good!
-
As much as I love Koi No Yokan, what it was missing was that trip-hop element that was part of the sound on White Pony and also Diamond Eyes.
-
I don't think it's as good as Diamond Eyes or Koi No Yokan, but it doesn't have to be. It's another great album from an awesome band, and I'm not disappointed that this is an 8 and not a 9.
-
Finally bought my copy of Gore and I'm very impressed. As I said earlier, their last album felt like there are too many layers piled on one another. It was very atmospheric but actually too consistently heavy for what I want in a Deftones record.
Gore has gone in the other direction. I'm surprised they're make such an ambient album. It's very daring and also pretty weird at times. I think they should have called it Acid Hologram.
I don't think we'll every get another White Pony, that was one of a kind and a product of their part cocaine use. I miss the hip sonic atmosphere of that album. But Gore is right up there with it.
-
Haven't stopped listening to Gore. I like it a lot more then their last two. My favorite 3 Deftones albums are White Pony, SNW, and now Gore.
-
It's not better than their last two for me, and overall I would put it among their weaker albums, but I still very much enjoy it. Another good release from the band.
-
Haven't stopped listening to Gore.
Ditto, easily my favorite thing in music to come out in 2016 so far. I don't like it as much as Diamond Eyes yet, but I can definitely see it surpassing DE in the future to become my #1 Deftones album.
-
Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but is this band pronounced like "deaf-tones" or "deft-ones"
I honestly don't know but have always been curious.
-
I've always said deaf-tones
-
Methinks that is the very heart of the band name. Say as you please!
-
I wish they would've spelled it Deaftones, then. I don't get why bands do this. I just looked it up on Wikipedia...
Carpenter said the name is intentionally vague to reflect the band's tendency to not focus on just one style of music
Imagine if the band Death went by Deth, because death is a mysterious thing and hard for the mind to rationalize ::)
-
I don't mind the different spelling. I think Deftones looks cleaner and better than Deaftones would have looked, and IMO it's never a bad thing when they simplify it or stay very close. I think something like CHVRCHES spelling their name with a V when it's pronounced U is more of a silly spelling choice in that case, even though I understand they didn't want their fans to find 3000 results of churches when they googled the band name.
I think there is a different because Deftones is something you pronounce the same way as Deaftones whereas Death / Deth would be a difference.
-
I'm no expert but I think Deftones/Deaftones is the same pronounciation differential (if it's any different at all) as Death/Deth.
That said, Deftones doesn't look weird at all to me, maybe because I've been seeing that name around for over 10 years it's different, I don't know, but I never expected someone to think it is pronounced as deft-ones. And this, by the way, is coming from the guy who didn't know how to pronounce "Leprous"
-
I didn't know how Anathema was pronounced for like 8 years.
-
I didn't know how Anathema was pronounced for like 8 years.
It wasn't until I saw them live and Danny said 'We're Anathema' or something that I realised :lol I still can't get to grips with Haken being pronounced like bacon either.
'Deft ones' isn't something I ever considered though.
-
I've always wondered about the band name, and now with Gore coming out I was pondering again. I'm not a native speaker but I think it's 'def', as in the slang word to describe something that's cool or dope, and tones. Cool tones..
As for the album, I'm still warming up to it. I love Deftones, White Pony is one of my all time faves, as is Saturday Night Wrist (severely underrated record). I thought Koi No Yokan was incredibly solid and catchy. The band sounded alive on that one.
Gore on the other hand sounds perhaps more interesting, but it's so weird melodically. It's definitely one of their most out-there records, and for a band like Deftones, that's saying something. In any case, you just have to give them credit for being so adventurous this late in their career. The new record is good, it's challenging and seems like it's there for the long run, instead of instant gratification. Or maybe I just want to like it, I don't know. I can't decide yet.
-
I agree on Saturday Night Wrist being severely underrated. Probably my second favorite after White Pony tbh.
-
I think something like CHVRCHES spelling their name with a V when it's pronounced U is more of a silly spelling choice in that case, even though I understand they didn't want their fans to find 3000 results of churches when they googled the band name.
Valid point for sure, but using V for U is a specific call to Latin, where V is treated like a U in all cases – Marilyn Manson did the same in some of the liner art where his album would be spelled Antichrist Svperstar.
-
I've always preferred the more experimental, spaced-out Deftones, like White Pony. That's why I love Gore so much. It's nothing like White Pony, but it is it's own thing and amazing for it. I enjoyed DE and KNY, but they were too samey if you know what I mean.
I hope their next album, if there is one, is a combination of DE and Gore. Because if you combine the styles of those albums you'd get something similar to a White Pony, one of my all-time favorite records.
-
My favorite Deftones album is Around the fur and my favorite song by them is Be quiet and drive (far away)
Been listening to them a lot lately
-
I've always found Be Quiet and Drive quite overrated. I mean it is a good song, but nowhere near their best IMO.
Gore is still really disappointing. I really only like P/T, Phantom Bride and Rubicon. The rest is boring or has downright annoying riffs. I dont know what happened, I loved both Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan.
-
Gore is still really disappointing. I really only like P/T, Phantom Bride and Rubicon. The rest is boring or has downright annoying riffs. I dont know what happened, I loved both Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan.
Same here, I was really looking forward to Gore after how good the last 2 albums were (especially KNY). Phantom Bride is the only song I really enjoy from the album, sadly.
-
I wanted to like Gore, but its pretty bad. There are moments of brilliance, like phantom bride and parts of other songs, but overall its an unsatisfying mess. Which is a shame because I LOVE diamond eyes and thought KNY was really solid as well.
-
Wow. A year later and the run of Diamond Eyes up until Gore is still easily my favourite in their discography, I think Gore is fucking amazing.
That said, Xenon is a bad song, though I think almost all Deftones albums have at least one of those
-
I missed the "epics" of Koi No Yokan on Gore. I love the subtle buildups and majestic choruses in Tempest and Rosemary.
-
Gore was a disappointment IMO. Not bad, but definitely not as good as the albums before it. I listened to it at least 10 times back when it came out and I struggle to remember a single song from it.
-
For me Gore was a lot more consistent than Koi No Yokan. Overall KNY was a big drop off from Diamond Eyes but it's still good. KNY has some great stuff but some really meh moments as well. Gore doesn't have the high epic moments that KNY does but I like it on the whole a bit better.
-
Appalled to realize Gore's over a year old now and I still haven't given it a good listen. I made it halfway through, and I quite like Prayers/Triangles and Hearts/Wires. The other songs weren't really standouts though.
I think with Koi No Yokan, I liked it when I heard it, I just can't remember anything from it. Nothing stayed with me like with other albums. But when I listen to it, I like what I hear. It's weird.
-
Gore was a bit of a disappointment sadly. Not bad, but not great enough where I want to go back and listen to it. But I'm not too worried, every band can have a dud and I'm still excited to see where they go next.
-
Well,
Gore has grown on me. I'm shocked too, because I really did not like it on initial release. Phantom bride is incredible and I really like Prayers/triangles. And Hearts/wires has the chilling opening which I really dig. Many of the other songs have grown me as well and I found myself listening to the album quite often.
-
I need to give Gore another chance.
Hearts/Wires been playing in my head lately almost non-stop, and there's some great songs in there.
I start believe that Deftones can't make a bad album even if they wanted. They just keep dishing out 4/5 discs no matter what.
-
Gore, from what i can remember was a bit of a disappointment for me. I should spin it again, since i haven't done so in a long time.
It had some great moments, namely Hearts/Wires. But it was a far cry from Koi No Yokan, which immediately became my favorite Deftones album, and was my album of the year when it was released!
-

Wish it had grown on me as much. :( Phantom Bride is the only song on there that I feel is really good.
-
Be quiet and drive (far away) will always be my favorite Deftones song, but over time, Phantom Bride has become a close second. I really love that song and that Jerry Cantrell solo is awesome.
-
I had really high expectations for Gore after I heard Prayers/Triangles, but to be honest it's along with Phantom Bride the only thing I enjoy off the new album.
-
I haven't revisited Gore since the release (though I will probably do it soon) but it did feel as a bit of a let down. Not even a bad album, I would still say it was a good album, but following a run of great albums it just didn't feel as strong.
-
Echoing the disappointment. It's just very "meh" to me. I don't dislike it, but I also don't like a whole lot of it. Which is almost worse than me actually disliking it in my eyes since this means that it's so bland (for the most part, there's some shining moments, but far too few to make up) that I'm just kind of in a state of numbness the whole time.
-
I think with Koi No Yokan, I liked it when I heard it, I just can't remember anything from it. Nothing stayed with me like with other albums. But when I listen to it, I like what I hear. It's weird.
So at this point, this is basically how I feel about Gore as well. Both are good albums, I just never remember anything after hearing them. Except for Prayers/Triangles (fantastic opener) and Phantom Bride. The latter's one of the best songs the band ever made, imo.
-
Been listening to SOOO much Deftones lately.
I think my favorite album is Around the fur. Its just so damn hard hitting, aggressive and catchy. And it has be quiet and drive which is my favorite Deftones song.
Diamond eyes is a close second favorite.
And while I'm at it, I just want to say that I love RX queen from White pony
-
I never gave Around The Fur too much attention. It always felt just a bit too rooted in nu-metal for me to appreciate it, though Mascara, the title track, and Dai The Flu are incredible songs. I should give it another listen and see how I like it now.
Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan are masterpieces, with Gauze being the most underrated track in their entire catalog IMO.
-
Around The Fur will always be the OG in my eyes. I was so edgy and hardcore when I listened to it as a kid. :rollin
Diamond and Koi really grew on me, the latter even more so. But man... Gore has done nothing for me, like even just as an album unto itself, but even less so in comparison to their other works. Every now and again I'll spin it to see if anything has changed but it just sounds so bland and uninspired to my ears. There's a few moments from a song here and there that I'll latch onto and it's gone before I have a chance to enjoy it.
I'm still hoping that they'll come out with another great one though, because it's clear that they still have something special with the current line up. I can't give them too much shit though with how much the band has been through. I'm kind of surprised they're still around. Grateful of that, though. And...now I want to try out Gore again... :lol It's like I'll guilt myself into it ever few months. Hmm... Maybe on this rainy morning it'll click...?
-
I've really tried with Gore, but I always finish it feeling underwhelmed and have no real interest in listening to it again. Meanwhile, I'm always in the mood to listen to Koi, White Pony, or Diamond Eyes. I think Prayers/Triangles and L(MIRL) are the only ones that even vaguely held my interest.
-
Yeah, I just finished a listen on my trek back from downtown and it was okay. I like Acid Hologram a lot more than before, but Prayers, L and Hearts are still the only tracks that have any kind of memorable aspects about them.
-
But Phantom Bride tho.

Phantom Bride :heart

I tried to like Gore because Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan were so good, but I have to say that I truly feel it's one of their weaker albums. That Carpenter was struggling to get into this direction says enough I think. The songwriting just doesn't seem to be up to their usual standards. Also, the production kind of hurts my ears. I'm sure their next album will be better. At least they're willing to experiment, but in the end I feel the album is a bit of a mess.
-
New album is called Ohms. Comes out sept 25th
https://www.blabbermouth.net/news/deftones-new-album-title-and-release-date-revealed/
I'm digging the first single
-
Album cover reminds me of one of those video game creepypastas. :lol
-
Did not like Gore that much but I'm hyped for this. Diamond Eyes is my favorite and Koi No Yokan would probably make my top3 too so I'm hoping Gore was just a dud.
-
Diamond Eyes is my favorite as well and really what got me into the band. Really enjoy Koi No Yokan as well. There's some really beautiful stuff on that album.
Gore is a mess. I really dig Prayers/triangles, Hearts/wires and phantom bride but the rest is all over the place.
Definitely looking forward to hearing the rest of the new album.

Forgot the album was out next week!
-
New song is so so, but I am still looking forward to the new album
-
Really impressed by the new song Genesis. The title track did not excite me as much as this new one.
-
Probably the worst Deftones track I’ve ever heard. Fuck, maybe I’ve just grown out of them but this sounds super super bad to me
-
For me, the new one is just Deftones by the numbers. Kinda heavy, a little all over the place and not very memorable. Reminds of the lesser Gore tracks.
Honestly, just let me get a handful of really solid tracks on the new album and I'll be happy, but Genesis is not something I am going to go out of my way to listen to.
-
I think I'm completely done with new Deftones from here on, this is one of the most disappointing albums I've listened to in the last couple of years. I was surprised to find out I disliked the second single even more than the first :lol
Chino just sounds like a cat in pain, the riffs all sound like Koi No Yokan/Gore leftovers.
-
Agreed.
I had to struggle to get through 2 full listens of the new album. Its uninspired and unmemorable. The songs are directionless. I am really disappointed with this one.
-
I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. There's still some tracks in the middle that seem pointless, but as a whole I'm pretty happy. Radiant City and Urantia are the two early standouts, while Pompeji might be the most useless thing I've ever heard.
-

Guess I predicted that right ;D I have yet to hear anyone say this is worse than Gore.
-
I've gone through a couple of tracks and I don't get the hype at all, I agree that these tracks feel very aimless, the riffs are ok, the choruses are mediocre. I'll give the whole thing a listen to see if there's anything worth going back to, but I'm just baffled at the fan response being so positive.

Happy to be the first! I find Gore miles better than this stuff
-
I'll take Gore anyday over Ohms
-
Haha alright!
-
I had a casual listen of the new album, and my first reaction was pretty positive. It's definitely better than the last one. One of my faves from the new album is actually Genesis!
-
After Gore I was worried they had lost their touch but Ohms is a really strong return to form and has elements from all their best albums. Potential AOTY candidate. :)
-
I've been listening to Koi No Yokan for the first time in a few years and I forgot how much I love "Leathers". :metal
-
And not only leathers, but its got awesome stuff like Rosmary, Entombed and tempest. Such a great album
-
I think I personally underrate it because when it came out, I was still riding the high of Diamond Eyes and by the time it clicked for me, Gore was coming out. Every time I come back to KNY, it's like "oh yeah, now I remember, I LIKE this album!" :lol
-
Same with me. Diamond Eyes is the album that made me love the band, so I felt the same with Koi when it came out. Really great album though
-
DE was my first album. Loved it. First heard the band because "Hole in the Earth" was in the Saints Row 2 radio soundtrack, so I sought out the band because that song was awesome. DE was the album that came out a few years after that game, so that's the one I bought.
-
I really like Urantia, Error, The Spell Of Mathematics and the title track. The rest of the album I'm not so sure about, especially the heavier songs like Genesis and Radiant City.
-
I've been listening to Koi No Yokan for the first time in a few years and I forgot how much I love "Leathers". :metal
That's a top 5 Deftones track for me, the chorus feels like the most emotional thing I've heard from them.
As for the new album, I'm digging it, it's not blowing me away on all fronts but favorites are starting to come out:
Genesis - This is still my favorite
Urantia - Super cool verses
The Spell of Mathematics - Love the outro
-
The title track is really fun to play on guitar. And it's in E standard, which I don't think the band has done in quite a while. :lol
-
I am really loving this new album. Dare I say it's their best since White Pony? Possibly.....
-
Nah their best since Koi No Yokan :P
This album has really grown on me a lot lately, I absolutely love the middle section from Urantia to Pompeji. Also the use of synths overall is pretty refreshing and fits quite well.
-
Diamond Eyes is still my favorite by them, easily.
fuck what fantano says

I clicked out of that Ohms review when I heard what he had to say about Diamond Eyes. :lol

Wow, I'm almost certain he is trolling when it comes to Deftones.....I mean, he has to be.
-
His Ohms review was the final nail in the coffin for me and I unsubscribed. Not that I can't take it that someone dislikes something I like, but I've watched less and less of his videos over the last year or two and I just feel like his 'focus' has gone in a very different direction than my own. But I've always felt like he has a tendency to go overboard (positive or negative) sometimes to generate more clicks. I remember he savaged Raven when it came out in 2013 as well, and fair play if you don't like it but many of his negative complaints just felt very forced. For the most part I feel like the albums he reviews these days are albums I have no interest in so it's a bit pointless. :p
Regarding Ohms I feel it's growing with every spin. Love Urantia and the mix of heavy riffs and dreamy atmospheric parts. Genesis is a great opener, the title track is a great closer. Overall just a really great album! I'm just so happy that the Diamond Eyes/Koi No Yokan guitars are back and we don't have the muddy mix/production of Gore.
-
I just find it funny that, aside from the title track and Genesis, all of my favorite songs were his least favorites, and vice versa. :lol
I realized a long time ago that his tastes and mine don't have all that much overlap. That said, there's a bunch of artists I wouldn't have checked out if he hadn't reviewed them, and some of them I've gone on to become big fans of (Anamanaguchi, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Elder, etc). So I think it balances out.
-
I think I've finally had a breakthrough with Deftones and I'm FINALLY starting to 'get' them. I mean it's been a long old road. Being 37 I was there during the hype of nu-metal. I liked Limp Bizkit sure and ended up liking Linkin Park and Slipknot, but Deftones were a band I never really understood the appeal.
I've tried many, many times over the last 20 years. I had a few friends growing up who were into them I guess but no one I knew considered them their favourite band or anything. I suppose White Pony is the album I've tried the most. I remember 12 years ago or something I actually liked the song Back to School (Mini Maggit), but I think Moreno's vocals were always the biggest obstacle.
Anyway, for some reason (I guess it was checking out Ohms) I recently thought I give them another go. I've been working my way backwards through their catalogue and I'm finding myself wanting to listen to them, a lot!
I downloaded Ohms, Diamond Eyes, Gore and Koi No Yokan onto my ipod and currently I'd say the following are the songs I'm really digging:
Sextape
Phantom Bride
Rosemary (that outro :heart )
Goon Squad
I have no idea on what songs are considered favourites or generally loved by the fanbase but I'm loving these. Just need to round up listening to their first two albums and then I'll probably download a few more.
Anyone else find them difficult to get into?

I like a lot of their more atmospheric stuff over the harder metal stuff. Their first 2 albums have some great moments, but it wasn't until White Pony that I thought they really became something special and broke out of the "nu-metal" sound (even though traces of it show up past those albums). I can't believe Chino's voice was an obstacle, to me, he's the most integral part due to the way he can honestly hit any note good or bad and make it sound like it belongs.
I think my favorite albums overall are Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan. My favorite songs are Korea (even though I just said I prefer the atmospheric stuff this song/main riff just KILLS), Cherry Waves, Gauze, Leathers, Beauty School, Hearts/Wires, and Needles & Pins. Such an incredible band, though their last 2 releases just haven't really hit me like their other albums.
-
I've been listening to Deftones relentlessly the past week.
There's so much to offer. They really grew beyond their earlier heavy stuff and some of their later material is utterly beautiful. Entombed is probably my favorite song by them, but I'll just as easily love every second of Be quiet and drive.
Just an awesome, very unique band with a lot of variety.

I understand you very much!
Citing the previous post, I have been listening to Deftones relentlessly for the past year, and sadly I know 99% of their discography by now.
It has been one of the bands which has demonstrated me once again that there is still something special in music to be discovered, even when you think you may not find other bands on the level of your favourites.
I am 27 and I grew up with numetal and I like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Slipknot and some Korn songs, but I never checked out Deftones at that time. I listened 7 years ago to Koi No Yokan and I liked it, but I wasn't impressed by the odd songs I tried from other albums and Koi No Yokan was just good but not mindblowing, and I still think more or less the same about it.
But last year Digital Bath clicked (thanks to whoever sent it in a roulette which made me listen to Deftones again, don't remember who and in which roulette), and then the whole White Pony album, which is a superb album as said by many.
The self titled while not a perfect album by any means and maybe too much full of dark and similar mid tempo song, has obsessed me for a long time this year too, and it's my second favourite. Adrenaline and Around The Fur are a step below but still very enjoyable, and I still can't recall some of the songs in there, so it means I still have some enjoyment left out of them.
Regarding newer albums Diamond Eyes is slowly rising at the top of my rankings. I disliked it at first as it sounded non innovative, predictable and safe having listened all of their other albums, but the sound of the album is crystalline, the flow is great and some songs are among my favorites.
1. White Pony
2. Deftones
3. Saturday Night Wrist
4. Diamond Eyes
5. Around The Fur
6. Ohms
7. Adrenaline
8. Koi No Yokan
9. Gore
Favorite songs in chronological order of albums:
Fireal (Adrenaline)
Be Quiet And Drive (Around The Fur)
Feiticiera, Digital Bath, Street Carp, Korea, Change, but I could say the whole White Pony album.
Deathblow - When Girls Telephone Boys - Battle Axe from the self titled is maybe my favorite three song run of the discography.
Rapture, Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces (Saturday Night Wrist)
Beauty School, Risk, This Place Is Death (Diamond Eyes)
Rubicon and Acid Hologram are 2 of the 4 tracks I like of the whole Gore album.
Graphic Nature has always been my favorite from Koi No Yokan since I knew the album, and I still find it catchy.
Genesis from Ohms. Solid album overall though.
-
My rankings would be something like this, considering I haven't listened to Gore, Adrenaline, and the selt-titled one yet:
White Pony
Koi No Yokan
Ohms
Around the Fur
Saturday Night Wrist
Diamond Eyes
-
Diamond Eyes
Around the fur
White pony
Koi No Yokan
Deftones
Gore
Saturday Night wrist
ohms
Adrenaline
-
Ohms is a good record, quite amazing at times. I don't like it as much as Koi No Yokan, Saturday Night Wrist or White Pony, but it's pretty close. Certainly a step up from Gore. The production kind of ruined that album for me.
-
I like a lot of their more atmospheric stuff over the harder metal stuff.
Yea I think to be fair I'm digging their more atmospheric stuff as well. But so much quality material over the span of their career. About Chino's vocals, it's not that I ever actively disliked them, it was more that I didn't get it! His vocals were always so different to a lot of the metal I grew up listening to and I just couldn't wrap my head around what he was doing :lol it makes more sense to me now my tastes have broadened I guess.
Looking back, I think the other obstacle for me has been Diamond Eyes. I know it is a big fan favourite, and I'm slowly coming around to it, but I prefer Koi No Yokan and Gore so far. I know I checked out White Pony many times over the years, as a fan favourite (and it never clicked), and I also know that years down the line I checked out Diamond Eyes, which also didn't click.
Due to this I just assumed that I would never get into this band. Guess I was just listening to the wrong albums as Koi No Yokan and Gore are the albums that made me want to listen through all their discography. This is a prime example, at least for me, of never always trusting the general consensus when it comes to music. Make up your own mind :lol
Finally, I've compiled a little playlist based on the songs you guys mentioned as faves (as well as my own faves) to really familiarise myself with certain songs :metal
-
I also didn't get them for many years.
At the time I first tried to get into them it was like 2002, and I was listening almost exclusively to Dream Theater so Chino's vocals were so wildly different and I wasn't really digging them.
It was Diamond eyes that made me into a Deftones fan and I branched out from there. Now they are one of my favorite bands.
-
Can't remember exactly how or when I started listening to them, other than it was definitely before Saturday Night Wrist came out. I guess it was hearing songs from Around the Fur and White Pony on Kerrang and MTV2 in the early 200s.
Album rankings would be something like this:
1. Koi No Yokan
2. White Pony
3. Around the Fur
4. Saturday Night Wrist
5. Diamond Eyes
6. Deftones
7. Ohms
8. Adrenaline
9. Gore
I still need to listen to Ohms more though, I kind of forgot about it. Making the list has made me want to binge a bit on the band actually!
Some of my favourite tracks: Tempest, Leathers, Swerve City, Royal, Rocket Skates, Hole in the Earth, Hexagram, Minerva, Knife Prty, Passenger, Change (In the House of Flies), My Own Summer (Shove It), Around the Fur, Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).
-
1. Diamond Eyes
2. Ohms
3. Koi No Yokan
4. White Pony
--
5. Saturday Night Wrist
6. Around the Fur
7. Deftones
--
8. Adrenaline
9. Gore
-
Is Gore generally rated so low by you guys solely based on the production? Or is it also down to the songs themselves? If it's the former then I'm glad that my ear just doesn't seem to pick up on this stuff :lol I honestly don't have a problem with how it sounds at all and think it's one of my favourites, now I've listened to all their albums.
Loose ranking based on listening through everything. Some of these I've only listened to once or twice so far:
1. Koi No Yokan
2. Gore
3. White Pony
4. Around the Fur
5. Diamond Eyes
6. Deftones
7. Ohms
8. Saturday Night Wrisr
9. Adrenaline
Don't want to rush into devouring everything Deftones related super quick, but thinking I may just spin the +++'s and Team Sleep albums next.
-
Gore for me is a combination of the production annoying me but also the songs themselves feeling pretty weak. Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan have memorable riffs in spades and still pack loads of memorable melodies, with Gore it's like nothing memorable in either department. I've probably listened to it a good 15-20 times (10-15 initially and then I return to it every once in a while) and if I had a gun to my head I don't think I could remember any of the songs from the top of my head.
-
For me, Gore has:
Phantom bride
Prayers/triangles
Both of which I really like and most days even love Phantom Bride.
I really love the beginning of hearts/wires and song is fine for the most part
and Doomed user is serviceable, but overall its a weak album but not totally without merit
-
Gore's production doesn't bother me, it's just the songs themselves that don't do anything for me. Phantom Bride is the only song I revisit. Coming after Koi No Yokan probably hurt it a bit too, as I was really looking forward to what they'd come up with after that and it just ended up being a big disappointment.
-
You guys ever hear the stuff off of their lost album Eros?
here goes smile
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rETGJHkZyhs
-
It's about the songs for me too, I am not bothered by the production.
Acid Hologram, Rubicon, Phantom Bride and Hearts Wires are definitely good, but lots of other songs are rather weak to me.
LMIRL has good moments too, but as a whole I feel is not coherent. The other songs are just not that interesting, they lack a strong hook.
I read about Eros, and in the latest interviews they said they would probably publish an EP with the best songs at some point, because they were not convinced about some songs.
On the Wikipedia page of Eros, musical style section, it sounds like an intriguing album.
-
I'm going all in on this band right now. Just listened to Adrenaline for the second time and loved it! It's a really good debut and I love the energy and rawness of it.

I was reading up on Eros last night. This seems pretty dope but it's all fresh to me at the moment :lol
-
Listening to Ohms just now and it reminded me how much I love Abe Cunningham's drum sound. It's always so clear and punchy.
-
Anyone else catch a show on this US tour? It was my first time seeing them, and it was a lot of fun. Pretty heavy set and lots of moshing. They also only played 2 songs from the newest album, which I'm fine with tbh but I could see some people being disappointed by that since this is technically the "Ohms tour" :lol
