Just listened to Fables for the first time. Shit...this is some pretty good stuff! I like it.

So, this album (Fables) is bad-ass. Absolutely one of my favorite recent discoveries. The only thing that bothers me about it is that I'm pretty sure every single song has the exact same structure.
I know nothing about music, so normally shit like this doesn't bug me, but for some reason I can't help but notice it. Still though, incredible album. Can't believe these guys aren't more popular.

Fables is a very good album although I wish they kept "Quince" and "Timbuktu" those were my favorite songs from IFS.

Yeah those are both great mellow tracks, although I'm not sure where I'd put them on Fables. There are a couple of songs that I'm not too crazy about but overall it's really consistent and I don't think I'd cut anything.
-J
So I'm loving Fables, is their back catalogue as good?
Fables is considered their first "real" album, from what I gather. Maybe just because it's on a major label and had quality production, I don't know.
The only other release of theirs I've heard is inter.funda.stifle. It has some good songs that didn't make it onto Fables, and some different versions of Fables songs. In general, I prefer the versions on Fables because, like ariich said, the production is better among other things. Worth listening to for the couple of standout tracks though, I'd say.

FAIR TO MIDLAND SIGN WORLD WIDE DEAL WITH EONE MUSIC (New York, NY) - Texas natives FAIR TO MIDLAND have signed a worldwide deal with eOne Music. A new album is schedule for the spring of 2011 along with a tour to support it. The band has enlisted producer Joe Barresi (TOOL, QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE, COHEED AND CAMBRIA) to man the board for this next offering. "I've been looking forward to working with these guys for quite sometime. They're a great band whose music is intricate and yet very melodic," says Barresi. The new album will be the band's follow-up to "Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True" which included the popular singles Dance of the Manatee and Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes. "We're all huge fans of what Barresi did with Queens of the Stone Age. We wanted a stellar rock producer and were lucky enough to find one who has managed to find the happy medium between polish and performance,âs says front man Darroh Sudderth. Founded in 1998 in the quiet farm town of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Fair To Midland quickly became one of the Lone Star State's fastest-rising bands, earning critical acclaim for their first two independent releases, 2001's The Carbon Copy Silver Lining and the 2004 inter.funda.stifle. Since the release of Fables From a Mayfly, they have shared the stage with bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Flyleaf, Chevelle, Dir en Grey, Alice In Chains, and Serj Tankian throughout the U.S. & Europe. The band has made appearances at festivals such as Coachella, Bamboozle, Download Festival, Rock AM Ring and Rock IM Park. Fair Midland is Darroh Sudderth (vocals), Cliff Campbell (guitar), Brett Stowers (drums), Matt Langley (keyboards) and Jon Dicken (Bass).
Checked these guys out a few days ago (Mayfly album) to see if they were worth seeing with Periphery and Cynic. The short answer is yes. I was afraid it was going to be some overly pretentious, artsy-for-the-sake-of-artsiness music based solely on the album title, album art, and track names. Holy God was I not expecting what I heard. Really awesome, fresh stuff.

FOR THE AVALANCHE-JOURNAL
Alternative metal band Fair to Midland is finally ready to announce that its soon-to-be released album is to be called “Arrows and Anchors,” and will be out by mid-summer on their newly-signed label, E1 Music.
The band began working on the project shortly after its major label debut album,“Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True,” was released.
So why is “Arrows and Anchors” an appropriate title?
“We wanted something simple because all of our other titles have been so long — winded,” Sudderth said. “We also just wanted to keep it simple because after all, you know, it’s a rock album.”
It’s also meant to rock harder, be darker and more truthful than “Fables,” he said. “Arrows and Anchors” hits the mark with its raw imperfections. It’s not as polished as the band’s debut album and that’s the way they wanted it, simple as that.
“I think with this album we really tried to capture our performance and really tried to make it raw and leave in the imperfections. Honestly, I think we chose to keep it more human and real.”
To help them get the vibe they wanted, the band called in Joe Barresi for some direction. The producer is best known for his work with the metal band Tool.
“I know for me personally, it’s been really freakin’ hard on me,” he said. “It has taken so long, you know, because we’ve changed labels, we’ve changed booking, everything...we’ve been killing ourselves making this album.
“Not only that, but I guess technically it’s our second full-length album with a major label,” he added. “You know, the whole sophomore curse thing has definitely been running through our heads. You’ve got like a decade to write your first record and then a lot less for your second. You know, I’m really kind of high strung so, yeah, that’s on my mind every day.”
When asked why he was learning the banjo and mandolin, Sudderth said he wanted to mesh his love of bluegrass and rhythm and blues with the band’s hot metal sound. The new flavor of music he’s attempting to invent bleeds through on the album’s track “Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow.”
“I’m not trying to be the best in the world at it or anything,” he said. “But damn, man, the banjo is like crazy hard.”
Sudderth said that he may one day shed the rock and metal scene and pursue his own brand of country, R&B and bluegrass. But, he added, it probably won’t be any time soon. While he loves traditional country music, he can’t stomach the current country scene. Sudderth said he just doesn’t get it.
“Yeah, I guess I could definitely see myself playing traditional country, but not the contemporary stuff. You know what I don’t get? I don’t understand contemporary Christian or contemporary country. Man, I just don’t get it, but I would love to try something like that, you know, the old country stuff. To be honest, though, as long as I’m playing music, man, I could care less.”
June 7th. Same day as new releases from The Dear Hunter and Battles

Musical Chairs is a sweet song, and the artwork is awesome! Looking forward to the album. What's the most recent projected release date again?

Fantastic. If you don't smile a huge smile while listening to The Wife, then I'll be disappointed.

Secondedededed.
They only have one album...
People have been mentioning and recommending me this band for a while. Where should I start with them?
Has everyone heard "Amarillo Sleeps on my Pillow"? FtM has it up for free download on their website, it's a really good song.
And yeah, definitely start with Fables, it's a fantastic album.
I've been totally obsessed with Musical Chairs lately.
RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI RIKKI TIKI
Eh, I must not be as picky, I guess. Although, I have pretty good speakers.
And yeah, the actual album is going to sound fantastic. Going to pick it up on Tuesday with a friend.
REALLY didn't like that song at all.
REALLY didn't like that song at all.
What the FUCK is this shit
I thought it was hilarious and a bit annoying.
alright, I guess I'll be the first to say it. Disappointed.
The last track is great, but the rest just doesn't hit me like anything from "Tall Tales...". If I had heard this before "Tall Tales..." I wouldn't have paid any attention to this band.
Holy shit Whiskey and Ritalin, what a start :Oalright, I guess I'll be the first to say it. Disappointed.

Tall tales?
I feel like some of the songs are more "growers," but most of Fables was for me at first, too.
Golden Parachutes is the best track on the album to my ears. I'm warming up to the album but still don't think it stands up to "Fables". Time will tell.
I'm seeing Dredg on July 29th, and they're listed as one of the bands to play with them. So I guess I'll be seeing them shortly.
The irony is that I'm not even a fan of Fair to Midland :lolI'm seeing Dredg on July 29th, and they're listed as one of the bands to play with them. So I guess I'll be seeing them shortly.
I fucking hate you so much, they're not opening for dredg at the show I'm going to on the 2nd.

Listened to it today, my first ever exposure to the band.
I really enjoyed it!
WERE YOU SHAKING IN YOUR BOOTS
DID IT SCARE YOU HALF TO DEATH
I'M A WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALE.
Is that what he's saying in track 13? :lol
If so, it's probably the greatest lyric ever written.
-J
Okay, I saw a commercial for this band's new album and I thought it sounded like generic buttrock.
But I just looked them up on wikipedia and one of the genres listed for them is progressive metal.
Could somebody please accurately describe this band?
I like most of the music that is lauded on this forum, so maybe my judgement was too hasty.

They have some fairly heavy stuff too. Whiskey & Ritalin and Rikki Tikki Tavi from the new album are pretty heavy, if that's what you're looking for.
But yeah I'm not even sure I'd classify them as "metal", personally.
-J
still havent gotten a chance to check out the new album (only musical chairs)
but 'April Fools and Eggmen' is definitely my favorite song of theirs so far
noooooo way is Rikki Tikki the best song
The Greener Grass :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Golden Parachutes
NOT NEEDY YOULL SEE
NOT NEEDY AND I COME WITH OPEN ARMS OVER TREES

My top 3 from A&A:Why didn't you just list four and call it your top 4 songs? :)
The Greener Grass
Short-Haired Tornado
Rikki Tikki Tavi / Golden Parachutes (this is way too hard to decide)

I think that's the point. I highly doubt he's trying to sound menacing.

This, it's just a fun song
The vocals are fucking awesome, if you disagree you don't know SHIT about music.

I picked up A&A because of this thread. SUCH a great album, I love every song.

I hope this post is tongue-in-cheek. Because if it's not, this is the most close-minded thing I've ever seen you say. :p

Do you have Fables?
Millahhhhh, get the last album (Fables From a Mayfly) as well. It's even better IMO!
Greener Grass
Coppertank Island
Musical Chairs
Golden Parachutes
Rikki Tikki Tavi
Short-Haired Tornado
Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow
Whisky and Ritalin
Uh-Oh
Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools
A Loophole in Limbo
But really none of the songs are bad.

Hopefully this doesn't slow them down too much. It has been a tough road for them to get to where they are now.
I COMPLETELY understand why some musicians leave successful bands. Trust me, each individual must do what is best for themselves and their family. It is just becoming very common place lately :(. I wish Jon the best of luck in his future endeavors.Absolutely. But leaving just before a tour that has already been booked is pretty uncool, unless it was for reasons outside his control.
Also, could we get this thread merged with this one https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=6416.0 for band thread consistency? ;DGood call. :tup
Sad to hear the news, he had a great bass sound for the band but I don't foresee them slowing down.Agreed with the first part.
Could be creative differences, I was reading an interview with Darroh talking about how they were at each others throats while writing this album.

Link to the interview?
Don't worry everyone, he plays bass. :neverusethis:
We'd like to announce the addition of our good friend and dreadlock enthusiast Ryan Collier (formerly of Opus Dai) to the band for our December headlining tour with Dead Letter Circus. Everybody say hi to Ryan!
As for the DVD, everything is still according to plan. I actually got a lot of great footage from you guys, and some similar shows that will make for good angles. Its going to be awesome, and I will not let what is going on to stop the progression of Fair To Midland. I also can't wait for the live DVD in Flint, MI on December 17th. Thanks so much for all of your support in making this happen.
After listening to Arrows & Anchors just now, I feel confident in saying it's my album of the year.
Also, Brett Stowers left the band recently, too. What the heck.
Dude! Bump because:

THERE ARE SNAKES IN THE GRASS, SO WE BETTER GO HUNTING!
:metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal
Yeah I know I *was* a few lines early, big woop wanna fight about it?
I like this band a lot but it's such a turn off to discover they're one of these douche bands that take pride in the fact that nobody knows the exact lyrics to the song and they don't include them in the booklet. Their fans are so annoying in this regards as they see it as a sign of genius.
I'm seeing them tomorrow. I can't even begin to express how excited I am. :metal
What I find douchey is to somehow be proud of the fact that your fans are not sure exactly what you're saying
Too bad, man. Local 506 is a GREAT venue, but FTM at the Cat's Cradle would have more awesome.I'm seeing them tomorrow. I can't even begin to express how excited I am. :metal
I wanted to go so bad tomorrow (especially considering the condition the band has been in of late, as who knows how much longer they will stay together at this point) but money is crazy tight for me at the moment and I'm already set to see Protest The Hero, Periphery, Jeff Loomis, The Safety Fire and Today I Caught The Plague in Raleigh next week.

Its better.
Is Fables from a Mayfly as good as Arrows & Anchors?
How far back does that consistent quality you speak of go? I see they have two more albums before these two.
Thanks for the recommendations Reaper!
Couple of listens in, I love Fables from a Mayfly but Arrows & anchors is clearly superior in both writing and production, might be too early to say though.
Quick: Whiskey & Ritalin vs. Dance Of the Manatee?
Dance of the Manatee.
I love Whiskey & Ritalin, I'd take it over DotM for now.
So do we know why the bassist and the drummer left? The bass lines are a major part of the appeal in their songs and also distinguished overall sound. The drummer did a kick ass job on A&A.
- The drummer just plain quit; I think he had some serious philsophical objections to how they went about the DVD, and thought it was half-assed.
I came in to say that Dance Of The Manatee on IFS is stellar, I was listening to it all day yesterday.
Elite- check out Arrows & Anchors dude. Not everyone agrees but I think it's even better than Fables.I also believe Arrows & Anchors is better. Awesome album.
