Awesome! I only have Fables but I absolutely love it. Are the previous albums anywhere near as good?

"inter.funda.stifle" should be on every fan's wishlist who enjoy Fables. Some of the songs on Fables (6) come from it, but THEY ARE NOT THE SAME VERSIONS. And maybe more importantly, IFS works really well beginning-to-end. So while they are familiar, they seem not only different in the arrangement on IFS,  but they seem different within the flow and concept of the album.

their debut album, "The Carbon Copy Silver Lining" is out-of-print and can only be found (legally) via some digital stores. And as a fan, while it's drastically different and something some of the band members don't care for, technically it was their 1st work. However, it's probably not something many people will want to play, other than for novelty purposes.

I have Fables and absolutely love it. I can't wait for the new album.

I heard them describe one of their new songs as "a death metal band covering Yellow Submarine", or something.

Holy crap, those are great! Musical Chairs sounds more epic than anything on Fables, and Rikki Tikki Tavi is so awesomely heavy in places!

By the way, there's also a better quality version of the demo for Musical Chairs on their myspace, sounds a lot better.

Why can't the album come out already dammit? :P

OK, just checked out this band for the first time; first couple of tracks off of 'Fables'.

My impression right now: Catchy melodies, but mediocre riffs and rythms.

Then again, I have rewinded five times already on the first track. That 'Dance of the Manatee' song is fantastic. Sounds like Linkin Park doing Viking Metal!

Big fan of FtM. I can't wait to see them in Georgia in March. I enjoy Fables a lot but I prefer IFS, Timbuku and Quince are great great songs. Also the first album has some great gems.

Cool band, I actually met the guitarist and singer outside of Rams Head Live (serj tankian concert) back in the day. (2 years ago :P) Darroh is a really good singer.

ZOMBIE THREAD ZOMG

So I was facebook stalking the iwrestledabearonce's singer, and apparently she's dating the singer of this band, which prompted me to check them out. HOLY SHIT they're awesome. Really close to the kind of stuff I've been looking for lately.  :metal

interesting..

by the way..they are about to hit the studio. They haven't announced what producer they're going to work with. But I read an interview with their singer (Darroh) a few weeks ago and I recall him saying there are a few really good people they have in mind.

yeah it should be out next year. The only thing was, someone on their fans forum mentioned how it may not be until Summer because they have a few more tours this Fall that they may go on (which they weren't planning on a few months ago), which may cause it to take longer i.e...some of the mixing/mastering and even recording may go into 2011.

here's the interview although the thing about the producer may not have been there now looking that over.

So, this album (Fables) is bad-ass.  Absolutely one of my favorite recent discoveries.  The only thing that bothers me about it is that I'm pretty sure every single song has the exact same structure.

I know nothing about music, so normally shit like this doesn't bug me, but for some reason I can't help but notice it.  Still though, incredible album.  Can't believe these guys aren't more popular.

Granny Niblo and Abigail are also cool parts from ifs that were not re-recorded/re-arranged for Fables, along with Orphan Anthem'86, although at least 2 of those 3 were included on the Drawn and Quartered EP.

Yeah those are both great mellow tracks, although I'm not sure where I'd put them on Fables.  There are a couple of songs that I'm not too crazy about but overall it's really consistent and I don't think I'd cut anything.

^Yeah, I agree.  And now that I think about it, the album is fairly short.  I'm sure somebody with a feel for album flow could find a place to effectively add those songs.

Personally, I don't think so. The production on the previous discs is pretty mediocre and it really harmed my enjoyment of them.

Fables is indeed a great album though, very excited to see what they do next.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: j on November 01, 2010, 02:37:56 PM
Fables is considered their first "real" album, from what I gather.  Maybe just because it's on a major label and had quality production, I don't know.

The only other release of theirs I've heard is inter.funda.stifle.  It has some good songs that didn't make it onto Fables, and some different versions of Fables songs.  In general, I prefer the versions on Fables because, like ariich said, the production is better among other things.  Worth listening to for the couple of standout tracks though, I'd say.

I like the production on inter.funda.stifle much better.  Fables sounds too "slick" and has too much high frequency.

Song wise, I'd probably chose Fables though.

So I'm loving Fables, is their back catalogue as good?

That really depends on your taste. inter.funda.stifle is sort of the building blocks of Fables, it shares mainly the same tracks with some new ones. Personally I end up listening to IFS more than Fables. Then there is the The Drawn And Quartered EP which has a couple of live songs and a couple of demos so you can pass on this until the end.

Finally there is The Carbon Copy Silver Lining It was released in 2001 and it's their first album although it's an independent release. It's pretty different, a lot more rough and is a little hit or miss (not to me personally, but I know a few fans who don't like it). There are some gems on there as well.

My favorite non-fable songs are (in no particular order):
Gaining One (The Carbon Copy Silver Lining)
Informative Timeline (Carbon Copy; This song is in my top 3 favorite FTM songs, just epic, Darroh's voice is haunting in this song)
An Occurance During the Restoration Process (Carbon Copy)
My Mentor (Carbon Copy)
With This Easel (Carbon Copy)
Granny Niblo (IFS)
Timbuktu (IFS)
Quince (IFS)

One more thing, there are some demo's floating around that were recorded during the Fables session. You can see them on youtube. If you like any of them shoot me a pm and I'll send you the 320 mp3 rips (took forever to find)

The track list for that is:
Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools
Loophole In Limbo
Musical Chairs (Another top three for me, just an incredible song, very radio friendly as well)
Rikki Tikki Tavi (Awesome vocal performance, lots of ROROROROROR)

you ask the band and most of the fans before they signed with Serjical Strike and they'll disagree. The band themself are very mixed about The Carbon Copy Silver Lining (their singer Darroh can't stand it anyway), but as far as inter.funda.stifle that is pretty well thought-of among their long time fans.

I mean do people think of "Images and Words" as Dream Theater's 1st album? no. It was the album that got them more exposure certainly.

^Fair enough, I should have said it's their first album to sell significant numbers, etc.  I really don't know anything about the band or its history, so I have no place commenting at all. :lol

And dtismajesty, Fables does sound a little "processed" or something I guess.  Personally, I prefer its production to IFS's, although the latter doesn't bother me or anything.

FAIR TO MIDLAND SIGN WORLD WIDE DEAL WITH EONE MUSIC (New York, NY) - Texas natives FAIR TO MIDLAND have signed a worldwide deal with eOne Music. A new album is schedule for the spring of 2011 along with a tour to support it. The band has enlisted producer Joe Barresi (TOOL, QUEENS OF THE STONEAGE, COHEED AND CAMBRIA) to man the board for this next offering. "I've been looking forward to working with these guys for quite sometime. They're a great band whose music is intricate and yet very melodic," says Barresi. The new album will be the band's follow-up to "Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True" which included the popular singles Dance of the Manatee and Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes. "We're all huge fans of what Barresi did with Queens of the Stone Age. We wanted a stellar rock producer and were lucky enough to find one who has managed to find the happy medium between polish and performance,âs says front man Darroh Sudderth. Founded in 1998 in the quiet farm town of Sulphur Springs, Texas, Fair To Midland quickly became one of the Lone Star State's fastest-rising bands, earning critical acclaim for their first two independent releases, 2001's The Carbon Copy Silver Lining and the 2004 inter.funda.stifle. Since the release of Fables From a Mayfly, they have shared the stage with bands such as the Smashing Pumpkins, Flyleaf, Chevelle, Dir en Grey, Alice In Chains, and Serj Tankian throughout the U.S. & Europe. The band has made appearances at festivals such as Coachella, Bamboozle, Download Festival, Rock AM Ring and Rock IM Park. Fair Midland is Darroh Sudderth (vocals), Cliff Campbell (guitar), Brett Stowers (drums), Matt Langley (keyboards) and Jon Dicken (Bass).

Yeah it's track 3. The chorus is what makes it, especially the line "Where do you get your evidence?".

But The Wife is just all kinds of epic.

I think the album gets a bit shakey after Walls of Jericho though, Tall Tales is great, but I don't like upgrade^brigade (my least favourite, probably the only song I dont like) which usually just makes me restart the album even though i'm listening to Say When now and it's actually great, especailly dat solo.

(Sorry for the , overload, i'm tired/it's late and i'm using all my sentence energy on the novel i'm writing).

Checked these guys out a few days ago (Mayfly album) to see if they were worth seeing with Periphery and Cynic.  The short answer is yes.  I was afraid it was going to be some overly pretentious, artsy-for-the-sake-of-artsiness music based solely on the album title, album art, and track names.  Holy God was I not expecting what I heard.  Really awesome, fresh stuff.

FOR THE AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Alternative metal band Fair to Midland is finally ready to announce that its soon-to-be released album is to be called “Arrows and Anchors,” and will be out by mid-summer on their newly-signed label, E1 Music.

The band began working on the project shortly after its major label debut album,“Fables from a Mayfly: What I Tell You Three Times Is True,” was released.

So why is “Arrows and Anchors” an appropriate title?

“We wanted something simple because all of our other titles have been so long — winded,” Sudderth said. “We also just wanted to keep it simple because after all, you know, it’s a rock album.”

It’s also meant to rock harder, be darker and more truthful than “Fables,” he said. “Arrows and Anchors” hits the mark with its raw imperfections. It’s not as polished as the band’s debut album and that’s the way they wanted it, simple as that.

“I think with this album we really tried to capture our performance and really tried to make it raw and leave in the imperfections. Honestly, I think we chose to keep it more human and real.”

To help them get the vibe they wanted, the band called in Joe Barresi for some direction. The producer is best known for his work with the metal band Tool.

“I know for me personally, it’s been really freakin’ hard on me,” he said. “It has taken so long, you know, because we’ve changed labels, we’ve changed booking, everything...we’ve been killing ourselves making this album.

“Not only that, but I guess technically it’s our second full-length album with a major label,” he added. “You know, the whole sophomore curse thing has definitely been running through our heads. You’ve got like a decade to write your first record and then a lot less for your second. You know, I’m really kind of high strung so, yeah, that’s on my mind every day.”

When asked why he was learning the banjo and mandolin, Sudderth said he wanted to mesh his love of bluegrass and rhythm and blues with the band’s hot metal sound. The new flavor of music he’s attempting to invent bleeds through on the album’s track “Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow.”

“I’m not trying to be the best in the world at it or anything,” he said. “But damn, man, the banjo is like crazy hard.”

Sudderth said that he may one day shed the rock and metal scene and pursue his own brand of country, R&B and bluegrass. But, he added, it probably won’t be any time soon. While he loves traditional country music, he can’t stomach the current country scene. Sudderth said he just doesn’t get it.

“Yeah, I guess I could definitely see myself playing traditional country, but not the contemporary stuff. You know what I don’t get? I don’t understand contemporary Christian or contemporary country. Man, I just don’t get it, but I would love to try something like that, you know, the old country stuff. To be honest, though, as long as I’m playing music, man, I could care less.”

I've been listening to Fables a lot recently and I've really found myself liking it a good bit. I particularly like The Wife, the Kids, and the White Picket Fence, Walls of Jericho, A Wolf Descends on the Spanish Sahara, and Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes a lot, so I'm excited to hear about a new album!

go stream "Musical Chairs"
https://www.artistdirect.com/nad/window/media/page/listen/0,,8771792,00.html

like the new guitar solo. Cymbals clipping in spots? no so much (I hope it's just the stream)

Yeah the quality of the stream isn't great.

The song sounds amazing though. Huge chorus, nice solo part, some interesting new ideas and I love the brief bits of harsh vocals in the style of Dance of the Manatee.

Just got back from tonight's show.  Ended early cause Darroh gashed the back of his head open.  Although, to his credit, he did try to power through and sang a few more songs with blood pouring out of the back of his head (even did a few stage dives).  It got the better of him though and they had to cut the show short.  Hope it's not too serious...

he did, without injury as far as I recall, scale upside the wire near the ceiling at Station 4 in St.Paul. He's sang from high up, upside down, probably at 6 or 7 of the 9 shows I've seen in the last 4 years. I have often wondered if it might catch up with him at some point. Hopefully not any more severely than tonight.

I love Fables, but the production kinda ruins it for me. I really hope that the new one sounds better. I like the comments about making it more human and real. Also it can't hurt to have Joe Barresi as producer. So it sounds promising in that regard. The new song does sound great. Wish we'd get a better quality stream for that.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: ZeppelinDT on April 07, 2011, 08:05:49 AM
Yeah, he didn't do any climbing this time, but I think that was only because there wasn't really anything to climb.  He did quite a few stage dives into a relatively thin crowd though, and was spinning all around the stage.  I'm not even sure how he cut his head... I think it might've been when he spun right into Cliff's guitar.  The next song up was Dance of the Manatee, and they brought out Periphery's singer to do it, then Darroh took over again and sang a few more, but he was obviously in pain.  He kept saying "my head hurts" and sounded really dazed - even moreso than usual.  He wiped the back of his head with a paper towel and it was very visibly covered in blood.  After which he tossed the bloody paper towel into the crowd.  Eventually he just kinda left to the surprise of the rest of the band.  They were actually in the middle of tuning up for the next song and Cliff looked over and was like "Uhh... sorry.  I guess that was our last song".

That sounds like a really bizarre gig. He really should be more careful than that.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: ZeppelinDT on April 07, 2011, 10:11:34 AM
It was.

This was one of Darroh's stage-dives AFTER he had split his head.  Video quality isn't great, but you get the idea.  He takes off at about 0:50 into the clip.  (I didn't take this video, but you can kinda see the top of my head towards the end).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yp1Y9ePnsvk

We also sang Happy Birthday to Cliff.  The show ended right after this.  Everybody sung, they all picked up their instruments to get ready for the next song, then they realized Darroh wasn't coming back and just stopped the show.  Notice at about 10 seconds in you can see Darroh on the left side trying to figure out if his head is still bleeding.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkLmX1fOxlw

He also had a pretty wicked gash on his left elbow.  I noticed it earlier in the night and it looked like a partially-healed would, but by half-way through the show it had re-opened and he had blood running all up his arm.  Dude is crazy.

Get Fables.

If you like that album then you can work backwords and get IFS which contains a lot of early Fables songs then get Carbon Copy.

Giving the song a second spin right now and it's pretty epic. I'm not sure I like the solo (I also don't like the added solo in Musical Chairs) but it's a solid song.

It's almost better, at least imo. They're both really awesome, and I'm still not sure which is better as a whole, but I'm leaning towards A&A. I feel like some of the songs are more "growers," but most of Fables was for me at first, too.

Wow, the greener grass on second listen is so much better.

First listen was with speakers, second with headphones, the quality isn't great but this album sure is great - I almost want to rank it above Fables because I overplayed Fables, and there are a few songs on it I think are a bit eh, whilst all of this is superb.

edit: Definitely prefer the mix on this album, its more raw and awesome.

Yeah the mix is more raw, which I really like. Fables is awesome all the way through, and so is this, but this one is just so more diverse and I'm loving every song more and more with each listen. There's still the catchiness that was present in Fables, because after about 5 listens I'm already singing the choruses, haha.

Listen to Fables From a Mayfly Ravenheart.  I've listened to it three times in the past day and its still fantastic.

In other news, my local record store didn't get their shipment of FtM from Koch so I have to wait till tomorrow to get it. :(

I'm seeing Dredg on July 29th, and they're listed as one of the bands to play with them. So I guess I'll be seeing them shortly.
I fucking hate you so much, they're not opening for dredg at the show I'm going to on the 2nd.
The irony is that I'm not even a fan of Fair to Midland :lol

They're so heavy they crushed the Wife, the kids, and the white picket fence while they were playing musical chairs telling tall tales that taste of sour grapes.

Check out their previous album.  Garroh shows off more of his "OMGHIGH" range on it and the music is, as a whole, less heavy.  I think I actually find it catchier than A&A.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: ariich on July 13, 2011, 04:55:12 PM
Me too. After two listens I don't think A&A matches up to the mastery of Fables, but then Fables is one of my all-time favourites, so I never expected it to match up.

It's still a brilliant album though!

I prefer the variety of A&A, there's just so much diversity on the record. It and Fables are neck and neck for me.

Okay, I saw a commercial for this band's new album and I thought it sounded like generic buttrock.

But I just looked them up on wikipedia and one of the genres listed for them is progressive metal.

Could somebody please accurately describe this band?

I like most of the music that is lauded on this forum, so maybe my judgement was too hasty.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: Heretic on July 15, 2011, 12:06:43 AM
Hahaha, Fair to Midland is nothing close to generic or buttrock. It's a really odd type of music, actually, somewhere between progressive and alternative rock, with some metal elements thrown in a good bit. They write some crazy stuff with fantastic melodies and really odd yet poetic lyrics, and they're definitely one of the more innovative bands of their "genre," I guess.

Listen to some of their songs, I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

The word to describe this band is FUCKING AWESOME.

Its like mixing contemporary metal with art rock and the kind of piano acrobatics you'd expect from progressive metal.  The singer is insane.  He can hit notes in the stratosphere like JLB one second and growl the next.  He's incredibly diverse.  They're nothing like what I assume you're describing as Theory of a Nickelcreether.

Here are two of their singles.  Notice how much they kick ass.

The only song I've heard by these guys is Musical Chairs. Is it generally representative of their sound? I ask because, while I really like the song, I was surprised at how not-heavy it is. For some reason I always thought they were a crazy mathcore band or something.
Title: Re: Fair to Midland
Post by: Heretic on July 22, 2011, 09:22:59 PM
Musical Chairs is a pretty good representation of their sound, but there's much better than that song. Check out:

-The Wife, the Kids, and the White Picket Fence (this is a must, I haven't met a person who dislikes this song)
-Dance of the Manatee
-Walls of Jericho
-Say When
-Short-Haired Tornado
-Golden Parachutes
-The Greener Grass

All songs that are fairly representative of the FtM sound. However, there's many a song by the guys that is experimental and crazy, and it just makes the music that more fun.

But yeah I'm not even sure I'd classify them as "metal", personally.

I got to talk with their lead singer before the show. I told them that all my friends were raving about the new album. He seemed kinda nervous, but he ended up being a real wild child onstage.

Okay let's do something entertaining:

Speaking strictly about the non-instrumental interludes on A&A, the tracklisting is the same as Fables. Which songs would you choose over the other?

Dance of the Manatee                                         Whiskey and Ritalin
Kyla Cries Cologne                                               Musical Chairs

A Seafarer's Knot                                                Short-Haired Tornado
A Wolf Descends Upon the Spanish Sahara               Rikki Tikki Tavi
Walls of Jericho                                                   Golden Parachutes
Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes                           Bright Bulbs & Sharp Tools

Walls of Jericho                                                   Golden Parachutes
Tall Tales Taste Like Sour Grapes                               Bright Bulbs & Sharp Tools

I'm not sure about some of those, a lot of 'em were really hard to choose.

My top 3 from A&A:

The Greener Grass
Short-Haired Tornado
Rikki Tikki Tavi / Golden Parachutes (this is way too hard to decide)

I like Musical Chairs a lot, but I still find the A&A version harder to enjoy over the demo. I still often times end up playing the demo over A&A

Love this band. I actually met the lead singer after a Serj Tankian concert, and he seemed sort of... out of his mind if you know what I mean. He signed my FtM CD in a pretty strange way too, used the D at the end of Midland and wrote "arroh" under it, vertically. Glad to see they finally have a new album out too.

Coppertank Island
Musical Chairs
Golden Parachutes

Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow

Uh-Oh
Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools

But really none of the songs are bad.

:D I'll just list them all in order of preference I suppose.

The Greener Grass
Short Haired Tornado
Rikki Tikki Tavi
Golden Parachutes
Musical Chairs
Amarillo Sleeps on My Pillow
Coppertank Island
A Loophole in Limbo
Whiskey and Ritalin
Bright Bulbs and Sharp Tools
Uh-Oh

This is pointless though because they're all such good songs.

I guess.  Honestly Short-Haired Tornado is the only song I don't really, really like.  And it's really just because of one annoying part in the chorus, not that it's not a good song most of the way through.

So in the Greener Grass, like seven minutes in, Darroh sings three lines that are kind of jibberish, but I'm hearing

"And sail backwards
Wearing their stripes
all the while"

It's right before the "get out of this town, hatchet men yelling timber will get us chopped down" part. Any guesses?

After 7 amazing years of playing with Fair To Midland, our bassist Jon Dicken has decided it was time for him to move on. We appreciate his hard work and dedication to the band, we love him, and wish him the best in all his future endeavors. Moving forward, we are excited to continue touring and making music.

Unfortunately, however, this has resulted in the cancellation of our European/UK dates in November. We want to send our sincerest apologies to our European friends and fans from across the pond. We will be regrouping in the following weeks and in the meantime we thank you all for your patience and understanding.

WOW!

I COMPLETELY understand why some musicians leave successful bands. Trust me, each individual must do what is best for themselves and their family. It is just becoming very common place lately :(. I wish Jon the best of luck in his future endeavors.

As for the DVD, everything is still according to plan. I actually got a lot of great footage from you guys, and some similar shows that will make for good angles. I like this band a lot but it's such a turn off to discover they're one of these douche bands that take pride in the fact that nobody knows the exact lyrics to the song and they don't include them in the booklet. Their fans are so annoying in this regards as they see it as a sign of genius.

I never got a douche vibe from them, and I've never met any FtM fans so I can't really say but there are lots of bands that never release their lyrics.

Are they douchey just because they don't have the lyrics in the booklets, or is there something else that have given you the idea? Just curious because I mean there are several bands that don't have lyrics in the booklets, so was just curious if there was something more. :P

Not including the lyrics in the booklet is a letdown for the CD buyer but it's not douchey.  What I find douchey is to somehow be proud of the fact that your fans are not sure exactly what you're saying and have some weird pride in a poetic accomplishment that leaves people wondering what you mean.. No! people are not wondering what you meant on FTM forums! they're wondering what you're saying and they have different interpretations, the interpretation from the official website which the fans unanimously agree is not accurate and the interpretation from the fans. This all would be good and well if we knew the lyrics but didn't know what they meant like PT's Deadwing for example, but to admire lyrics as an enigmatic creative effort cause I don't fully hear what it says, is pretty douchey.

Where do you get the idea that FTM is like that?

From fans who seem as dedicated to FTM as most of us here with DT, especially on their facebook page. I could be wrong but booklets that says nothing always gets on my nerves, booklets are honestly the last thing that makes buying CDs appealing and lyrics are a part of it.
Personally whether they do it on purpose or not I think if I was a professional musician I would have cared about not leaving my fans guessing what I said in the song. I guess I'm comparing to JP and JR's behavior towards fans.
Still I like the music and seeing them on this tour, this really doesn't fuck with the great music on Arrows and Anchors.

aaaaaaaaaand Fair to Midland were awesome. I met all of them and got a free poster signed; they're all really down-to-earth guys and they're a blast. We had to leave earlier than expected unfortunately, but they were still fantastic. Whiskey & Ritalin is so heavy live.

All their songs were really heavy live. My only slight complaint was that the keys weren't high enough in the mix.

Saw the NYC show last night.  Ho.  Lee.  Shit.  The tone was set early when Darroh launched into the audience on the downbeat of Whiskey & Ritalin.  I don't think I've ever seen a performance quite like that.

Yeah... of the three times I've seen FtM, last night's NYC show was the best.  I think the highlight for me was Amarillo Sleeps On My Pillow.  Rikki Tikki Tavi was pretty wild too.

This makes no sense to me.  To the contrary, I think pretty much every fan in the crowd knew every word to every song.  Half the time the crowd was as loud as Darroh.

I can't really comment on that, I've never heard any of the stuff prior to Fables.  From what I understand they're mainly independent releases and eps or something, with Fables being their first "official" release.  I also think that some of the tracks on the earlier stuff were re-recorded for Fables.  I'm not positive about any of this though, so I will shut up........................now.

Yeah a lot of the tracks on inter.fundia.stifle were rerecorded for Fables.  The only song from that one that gets live play is Orphan Anthem '86, which is pretty good.  Haven't heard the first two though.

Well The Carbon Copy Silver Lining is still as heavy but it's way more. . . . don't really know how to put this  . . . abstract, especially with the vocals. Lots of layering, lots of megaphone type effect, not as polished.

Definitely worth checking out IMO but you may not like it:

Here are few songs representing the cd IMO:

"Gaining One" - https://grooveshark.com/s/Gaining+One/2hbNXp?src=5

"Informative Timeline" - https://grooveshark.com/s/Informative+Timeline/2hbN3h?src=5 (my favorite from Carbon Copy)

---------------

inter.funda.stifle is cool to listen to if you liked Fables, early Fables stuff on there, "Quince", and "Timbuktu" are both great songs.

I love Whiskey & Ritalin, I'd take it over DotM for now.
So do we know why the bassist and the drummer left? The bass lines are a major part of the appeal in their songs and also distinguished overall sound. The drummer did a kick ass job on A&A.

I get the impression that:

-The bassist went into rehab, or had to leave for other personal reasons
-The drummer just plain quit; I think he had some serious philsophical objections to how they went about the DVD, and thought it was half-assed.

- The drummer just plain quit; I think he had some serious philsophical objections to how they went about the DVD, and thought it was half-assed.

I saw his statements and I don't understand what he found to be half assed, apparently neither did the old fans who've been with the bands from before Fables, here's the drummer's statement and their comment. (https://fairtomidlandfans.com/?p=206)
It's still too bad cause he was a great drummer and also Jon Dicken was a very creative bassist writing wise, judging only from A&A  and Fables.
But as I swam across youtube watching most of their related videos and all the interviews; my pessimism about the change of sound or loss of touch decreased cause I found it clear that the singer has most of the creative control over the musical direction, not just vocals. That mofo is pretty sick btw heh

I came in to say that Dance Of The Manatee on IFS is stellar, I was listening to it all day yesterday.

You know I managed to squeeze in a couple of spins for Fable in my A&A streak that's been going on for the last week and boy were you guys right about this album (Fables) as well, I cannot say I like it as much as A&A but it's clearly a grower. Caught my immediate applause were DotM, which is indeed an epic and Vice/Verse which is a fuckin emotional tornado. Maybe they stand out more cause the most attention paid during listening goes involuntarily to the first few tracks of any new album, I'll update as I listen more.
Early judgement says A&A is superior, I can't get enough of this damn album and I'm going to probably over play it but I can't help it heh, it's so good to have new music I'm excited about listening to and that happens like twice or thrice a year maximum.

A couple of observations, I've already mentioned my disappointment about the lack of lyrics in the booklet, especially when it sounds like the lyrics are worth reading, but the disappointment with the CD release doesn't end there as the CD is pressed the old style where you car CD player or stereo only shows you the track numbers, no song names unlike the newer CDs since around 09 which gives you artists, album and track titles. Of course it's not a problem on the computer as you're connected to the internet or use mp3s, which I do, but I do most of my joyful music listening while driving and it doesn't help that the song list on the back of the CD cover itself is not numbered so it's a bitch trying to figure out what track is playing if it's beyond the first 3 or 4 tracks while driving.
And obviously the song titles really doesn't help figuring out what song is playing since they're almost never in the lyrics or even hinting of the song content :lol Which is weird in a funny and cool way nonetheless.
With time you start making memorizing which is which though.
These tiny negatives don't bring down my rating of A&A, unless there's a 9.95/10 rating  ;D

website and fans forum down.

State of the band from ex-drummer Brett Stowers.

From Brett's Facebook Page

"Lately, a lot of people have been asking me if I know anything about the current situation with Fair To Midland. I'm by no means an official source of info, but i'll tell you what I know because I feel like the fans deserve to know what's up.

First off, even before I was no longer in the band, FTM was in quite a bit of debt. This, I'm certain, only got worse as time went on. Second, as far as I know, FTM currently have no label or official management. Third, without getting too much into anyone's personal life, I can say at least a couple members have expressed to me their frustration about lack of communication by certain other members of the band. Finally, the current members of FTM are spread out all over the country at this point. I would imagine that would make getting together for rehearsals/writing prohibitively expensive. (Plane rides, gas, accommodations, etc... you get the picture. Hell, it was hard enough when we were all in the relatively small area of Dallas/Commerce/Sulphur Springs.)

Read into the fact that nobody bothered to renew the band's domain name what you will. (which actually kind of upsets me. there was a lot of FTM history on those forums)

With all that said, like most of you, I sincerely hope that the guys are able to turn things around. Even though I was a member for 10+ years, I was a fan first. I'll be cheering alongside you if a new tour/album/whatever is announced, but i'm not holding my breath."

Honestly, I was expecting something like this. Glad I saw them live before the end. And I really think that this is the end. There doesn't seem to be a way that they can get out of debt, especially since I doubt they sell many records.

I don't think anyone knows. Not even some of the former members that keep in touch with the "current members" They didn't renew the domain so their official site is gone.

Their bass player played a show last year in Michigan and he had RIP FTM written on his bass. Their former drummer posted this on his Facebook awhile back:https://www.facebook.com/brettstowers/posts/10151620391329834 (https://www.facebook.com/brettstowers/posts/10151620391329834)

"There might be a new album soon if you don't know."

but as far as the band themselves, they are in limbo at best. I'm sure when something official happens, they'll announce it, but for now, as a fan, I am just assuming they are are on an indefinite hiatus.

I'll just treat them like Tool and assume they are putting something out but it's impossible to know when.

I don't know why, but I've never felt the urge to go beyond Fables from a Mayfly. That album holds a special place in my heart since I was listening to it at a time where I was having a great time. For me, whenever I hear the album, I'm brought back to those days.

For me, Fair to Midland is just Tables from a Mayfly. I will eventually check out Arrows and Anchors, but it's not on my immediate buy list.

I would suggest inter.funda.stifle as well.

But Arrows the production/mixing issues to some, like myself, is more or less a deal breaker.

Can anybody recommend a band that sounds like FtM or is similar in style/formation and song structure?

I've been looking for something similar for a while but nothing seems to scratch the itch the way FtM does.

Thanks for posting that. I probably wouldn't have come across it. It just makes me wish they'd get their stuff back together though. I feel like they were really just scraping the surface of their potential musically when they fell apart. Miss their detailed melodies/harmonies vocally and with the keys/piano.  :sadpanda:

I'd love to hear the rest of the demos. They had so much potential, I was thinking there would be a lot more material from them.

Darroh got married and has a kid and does vocal lessons now I think and everyone pretty much is spread throughout the US and yeah, looks like they are done. Which is sad, because they were awesome.

My heart jumped when I saw this thread get bumped. I'll have to check those two bands out.

What a shame that FtM didn't stay around longer. I still listen to them regularly, they're easily one of my all time favorite bands.

Fables is still my like, third or fourth favorite album of all time, so yeah, I'm right there with you. Miss them immensely.

Hopefully these two projects emerge into something.
